Abstract
The preassociation of reactants in a photoinitiated redox reaction through the use of noncovalent interactions can have a significant impact on excited state reactivity. As these noncovalent interactions render some stabilization to the associated species, they impact the kinetics and thermodynamics of photoinitiated electron transfer. Reported herein is a novel iridium(III) photocatalyst, equipped with an anion-sensitive, amide-substituted bipyridine ligand, and its reactivity with the halides (X = I-, Br-, Cl-) in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. A noteworthy periodic trend was observed, where the size and electron affinity dramatically altered the observed photoredox behavior. The binding affinity for the halides increased with decreasing ionic radius (Keq ∼103 to >106) in a polar medium but association was stoichiometric for each halide in a nonpolar medium. Evidence for the static quenching of iodide and bromide is presented while dynamic quenching was observed with all halides. These results highlight how the photophysics of halide adducts and the thermodynamics of intra-ionic photo-oxidation are impacted as a consequence of preassociation of a quencher through hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
In this paper we demonstrate that Pt(ii) complexes can function as efficient transmembrane chloride transporters. A series of Pt(ii) metal complexes with urea-appended isoquinoline ligands were synthesised and operate via classical hydrogen bonding interactions rather than ligand exchange. A number of the complexes exhibited potent transmembrane chloride activity in vesicle studies, while also showing strong antiproliferative activity in cisplatin-resistant cell lines via induction of apoptosis and inhibition of intracellular ROS.

Abstract
Switchable molecular tweezers are a unique class of molecular switches that, like their macroscopic analogs, exhibit mechanical motion between an open and closed conformation in response to stimuli. Such systems constitute an essential component of artificial molecular machines. This review will present selected examples of switchable molecular tweezers and their potential applications. The first part will be devoted to chemically responsive tweezers, including stimuli such as pH, metal coordination, and anion binding. Then, redox-active and photochemical tweezers will be presented.

Abstract
Bearing in mind the interest in the development and application of amino acids/peptides as bioinspired systems for sensing, a series of new phenylalanine derivatives bearing thiosemicarbazone and hydrazone units at the side chain were synthesised and evaluated as fluorimetric chemosensors for ions. Thiosemicarbazone and hydrazone moieties were chosen because they are considered both proton-donor and proton-acceptor, which is an interesting feature in the design of chemosensors. The obtained compounds were tested for the recognition of organic and inorganic anions (such as AcO-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO4-, CN-, NO3-, BzO-, OH-, H2PO4- and HSO4-) and of alkaline, alkaline-earth, and transition metal cations, (such as Na+, K+, Cs+, Ag+, Cu+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Pb2+, Pd2+, Ni2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cr3+) in acetonitrile and its aqueous mixtures in varying ratios via spectrofluorimetric titrations. The results indicate that there is a strong interaction via the donor N, O and S atoms at the side chain of the various phenylalanines, with higher sensitivity for Cu2+, Fe3+ and F- in a 1:2 ligand-ion stoichiometry. The photophysical and metal ion-sensing properties of these phenylalanines suggest that they might be suitable for incorporation into peptide chemosensory frameworks.

Abstract
Anionic species are omnipresent and involved in many important biological processes. A large number of artificial anion receptors has therefore been developed. Some of these are capable of mediating transmembrane transport. However, where transport proteins can respond to stimuli in their surroundings, creation of synthetic receptors with stimuli-responsive functions poses a major challenge. Herein, we give a full overview of the stimulus-controlled anion receptors that have been developed thus far, including their application in membrane transport. In addition to their potential operation as membrane carriers, the use of anion recognition motifs in forming responsive membrane-spanning channels is discussed. With this review article, we intend to increase interest in transmembrane transport among scientists working on host-guest complexes and dynamic functional systems in order to stimulate further developments.

Abstract
Three ferrocenyl-functionalized tripodal hexaurea anion receptors with ortho- (L(2)), meta- (L(3)), and para-phenylene (L(4)) bridges, which showed strong binding affinities toward sulfate ions, have been designed and synthesized. In particular, meta-phenylene-bridged ligand L(3), owing to its trigonal bipyramidal structure, can encapsulate two SO4(2-) ions in its "inner" and "outer" tripodal clefts, respectively, as supported by their clearly distinct NMR resonances and by molecular modeling. The sulfate complex of ortho-ligand L(2), (TBA)2[SO4⊂L(2)]·2H2O (1), displays a caged tetrahedral structure with an encapsulated sulfate ion that is hydrogen bonded by the six urea groups of ligand L(2). CV studies showed two types of electrochemical response of the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple upon anion binding, that is, a shift of the wave and the appearance of a new peak. Quantitative binding data were obtained from the NMR and CV titrations.

Abstract
This critical review is dedicated to the anion complexation chemistry of amide- and urea-functionalized (benzo)pyrroles, such as pyrroles, indoles, carbazoles, isoindoles, naphthalenodipyrroles and benzodipyrroles. It provides a comprehensive overview of these simple and neutral anion sensors from the first examples up to very recent studies. There is a discussion of a gradual progress made over time, often based on careful analysis of the properties of former generations that have subsequently led to obtaining excellent effectivities and selectivities. The influence of these species on other fields of chemistry and their applications there are also discussed (57 references).

Abstract
This critical review covers advances in anion complexation in the year 2008 and 2009. The review discusses anion receptors that employ hydrogen bond donors (both NH and CH), electrostatic interactions, Lewis acidic centres and combinations of these three types of binding interaction to complex anions. Additionally nanotechnological approaches to anion sensing in aqueous solution, lipid bilayer transporters and recent work on the use of anions to drive conformational change are highlighted (130 references).

Abstract
A family of heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone dyes (1-9) linked to different furan, thiazole, (bi)thiophene, and arylthiophene pi-conjugated bridges were synthesized in good yields, and their response toward anions was studied. Acetonitrile solutions of 1-9 show bands in the 326-407 region that are modulated by the electron-donor or -acceptor strength of the heterocyclic systems appended to the phenylthiosemicarbazone moiety. Anions of different shape such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, dihydrogen phosphate, hydrogen sulfate, nitrate, acetate, cyanide, and thiocyanate were employed for the recognition studies. From these anions, only fluoride, cyanide, acetate, and dihydrogen phosphate displayed sensing features. Two different effects were observed, (i) a low bathochromic shift of the absorption band due to coordination of the anions with the thiourea protons and (ii) the growth of a new red-shifted band with a concomitant change of the solution from yellow or pale yellow to orange-red due to deprotonation. The extent of each process is a balance between the acidity tendency of the thioureido-NH donors modulated by the donor or acceptor groups in the structure of the receptors and the basicity of the anions. Fluorescence studies were also in agreement with the different effects observed on the UV/vis titrations. Stability constants for the two processes (complex formation + deprotonation) for selected receptors and the anions fluoride and acetate were determined spectrophotometrically using the program HYPERQUAD. Semiempirical calculations to evaluate the hydrogen-donating ability of the dyes and (1)H NMR titrations experiments with fluoride were carried out. A prospective electrochemical characterization of compound 3 in the presence of anions was also performed.
