The simplest alkynyl thiocyanate HCCSCN and its isomers

The simplest alkynyl thiocyanate HCCSCN has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. HCCSCN is surprisingly stable at room temperature but undergoes photoisomerization in an Ar-matrix (10 K) to yield the novel sulfenyl isocyanide HCCSNC and thioketene NCC(H)CS. The isomeric isothiocyanate HCCNCS, missing in the photochemistry of HCCSCN, can be generated through the photodecarbonylation of propiolyl isothiocyanate.

Acryloylnitrenes: Spectroscopic Characterization, Spin Multiplicities, and Rearrangement to Vinyl Isocyanates

The simplest acryloylnitrene, CH₂═CHC(O)N (1b), and two halogenated derivatives, CH₂═CFC(O)N (2b) and CH₂═CBrC(O)N (3b), were generated through the 266 nm laser photolysis of the corresponding azide precursors in solid N₂-matrices at 15 K. The IR spectroscopic characterization of these new acylnitrenes is supported by ¹⁵N-labeling and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. For the three nitrenes 1b, 2b, and 3b, two conformers exhibiting syn and anti configurations between the C═C and C═O bonds with respect to the C-C bonds have been identified. Consistent with the CBS-QB3 calculated singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔE_ST < 0 kcal mol^-1), the IR spectral analysis suggests that all these acryloylnitrenes adopt oxazirine-like structures with closed-shell singlet spin multiplicity. Upon subsequent green light (532 nm) irradiation, these acryloylnitrenes rearrange to form vinyl isocyanates CH₂═CXNCO (X = H, F, Br), for which the IR spectra have also been obtained. According to the calculations on the α,β-fluorinated acryloylnitrenes at the CBS-QB3 level, their spin multiplicities can be switched from singlet CH₂═CFC(O)N (ΔE_ST = -0.86 kcal mol^-1) to triplet CF₂═CFC(O)N (ΔE_ST = +0.61 kcal mol^-1), whereas CFH═CFC(O)N is magnetically bistable due to a rather small ΔE_ST (+0.09 kcal mol^-1).

A Singlet Thiophosphoryl Nitrene and Its Interconversion with Thiazyl and Thionitroso Isomers

Thiophosphoryl nitrenes, R2P(S)N, are thiazirine-like intermediates that have been chemically inferred from trapping products in early solution studies. In this work, photolysis of the simplest thiophosphoryl azide, F2P(S)N3, in solid noble-gas matrices enabled a first-time spectroscopic (IR and UV-vis) identification of the thiophosphoryl nitrene F2P(S)N in its singlet ground state. Upon visible-light irradiation (≥495 nm), it converts into the thionitroso isomer F2P-N═S, which can also be produced in the gas phase from flash vacuum pyrolysis of F2P(S)N3. Further irradiation of F2P-NS with 365 nm UV light leads to the reformation of F2P(S)N and isomerization to the thiazyl species F2P-S≡N.

Structure, Stability, and Generation of CH3CNS

The unstable acetonitrile N-sulfide molecule CH3CNS has been photolytically generated in inert solid argon matrix from 3,4-dimethyl-1,2,5-thiadiazole by 254-nm UV irradiation, and studied by ultraviolet spectroscopy and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The molecule is stable in the matrix to 254-nm UV irradiation, but decomposes to CH3CN and a sulfur atom when broad-band UV irradiation is used. Chemiluminescence due to S2 formation from triplet sulfur atoms was detected on warming the matrix to ∼20–25 K. The ground-state structure and potential uni- and bimolecular reactions of CH3CNS are investigated using B3LYP, CCSD(T), and MR-AQCC quantum-chemical methods. CH3CNS is demonstrated to be stable under isolated conditions at room temperature, i.e. in the dilute gas phase or in an inert solid matrix, but unstable owing to bimolecular reactions, i.e. in the condensed phase.
