Photo-Induced Geometry and Polarity Gradients in Covalent Organic Frameworks Enabling Fast and Durable Molecular Separations

Azobenzene, which activates its geometric and chemical structure under light stimulation enables noninvasive control of mass transport in many processes including membrane separations. However, producing azobenzene-decorated channels that have precise size tunability and favorable pore wall chemistry allowing fast and durable permeation to solvent molecules, remains a great challenge. Herein, an advanced membrane that comprises geometry and polarity gradients within covalent organic framework (COF) nanochannels utilizing photoisomerization of azobenzene groups is reported. Such functional variations afford reduced interfacial transfer resistance and enhanced solvent-philic pore channels, thus creating a fast solvent transport pathway without compromising selectivity. Moreover, the membrane sets up a densely covered defense layer to prevent foulant adhesion and the accumulation of cake layer, contributing to enhanced antifouling resistance to organic foulants, and a high recovery rate of solvent permeance. More importantly, the solvent permeance displays a negligible decline throughout the long-term filtration for over 40 days. This work reports the geometry and polarity gradients in COF channels induced by the conformation change of branched azobenzene groups and demonstrates the strong capability of this conformation change in realizing fast and durable molecular separations.

Light-induced Photoswitching of 4-(Phenylazo)benzoic Acid on Au(111)

Photochromic molecules can undergo a reversible conversion between two isomeric forms upon exposure to external stimuli such as electromagnetic radiation. A significant physical transformation accompanying the photoisomerization process defines them as photoswitches, with potential applications in various molecular electronic devices. As such, a detailed understanding of the photoisomerization process on surfaces and the influence of the local chemical environment on switching efficiency is essential. Herein, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to observe the photoisomerization of 4-(phenylazo)benzoic acid (PABA) assembled on Au(111) in kinetically constrained metastable states guided by pulse deposition. Photoswitching is observed at low molecular density and is absent in tight-packed islands. Furthermore, switching events were noted in PABA molecules coadsorbed in a host octanethiol monolayer, suggesting an influence of the surrounding chemical environment on photoswitching efficiency.

Role of Sterically Bulky Azobenzenes in the Molecular Assembly of Pyrene Derivatives: Rectangular Sheet-like Structures and Their Emission Characteristics

The development of pyrene-based fluorescent assembled systems with desirable emission characteristics by reducing conventional concentration quenching and/or aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) is highly desirable. In this investigation, we designed a new azobenzene-functionalized pyrene derivative (AzPy) in which sterically bulky azobenzene is linked to pyrene. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic results before and after molecular assembly indicate that even in a dilute N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (~10 μM), AzPy molecules experienced significant concentration quenching, whereas the emission intensities of AzPy DMF-H₂O turbid suspensions containing self-assembled aggregates were slightly enhanced and showed similar values regardless of the concentration. The shape and size of sheet-like structures, from incomplete flakes less than one micrometer in size to well-completed rectangular microstructures, could be adjusted by changing the concentration. Importantly, such sheet-like structures exhibit concentration dependence of their emission wavelength from blue to yellow-orange. Comparison with the precursor (PyOH) demonstrates that the introduction of a sterically twisted azobenzene moiety plays an important role in converting the spatial molecular arrangements from H- to J-type aggregation mode. Thus, AzPy chromophores grow into anisotropic microstructures through inclined J-type aggregation and high crystallinity, which are responsible for their unexpected emission characteristics. Our findings provide useful insight into the rational design of fluorescent assembled systems.

Light-Responsive Hexagonal Assemblies of Triangular Azo Dyes

The rational design of small building block molecules and understanding their molecular assemblies are of fundamental importance in creating new stimuli-responsive organic architectures with desired shapes and functions. Based on the experimental results of light-induced conformational changes of four types of triangular azo dyes with different terminal functional groups, as well as absorption and fluorescence characteristics associated with their molecular assemblies, we report that aggregation-active emission enhancement (AIEE)-active compound (1) substituted with sterically crowded tert-butyl (t-Bu) groups showed approximately 35% light-induced molecular switching and had a strong tendency to assemble into highly stable hexagonal structures with AIEE characteristics. Their sizes were regulated from nanometer-scale hexagonal rods to micrometer-scale sticks depending on the concentration. This is in contrast to other triangular compounds with bromo (Br) and triphenylamine (TPA) substituents, which exhibited no photoisomerization and tended to form flexible fibrous structures. Moreover, non-contact exposure of the fluorescent hexagonal nanorods to ultraviolet (UV) light led to a dramatic hexagonal-to-amorphous structure transition. The resulting remarkable variations, such as in the contrast of microscopic images and fluorescence characteristics, were confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements.

Direct Color Observation of Light-Driven Molecular Conformation-Induced Stress

Although usually complex to handle, nanomechanical sensors are exceptional, label-free tools for monitoring molecular conformational changes, which makes them of paramount importance in understanding biomolecular interactions. Herein, a simple and inexpensive mechanical imaging approach based on low-stiffness cantilevers with structural coloration (mechanochromic cantilevers (MMC)) is demonstrated, able to monitor and quantify molecular conformational changes with similar sensitivity to the classical optical beam detection method of cantilever-based sensors (≈4.6 × 10^-3  N m^-1 ). This high sensitivity is achieved by using a white light and an RGB camera working in the reflection configuration. The sensor performance is demonstrated by monitoring the UV-light induced reversible conformational changes of azobenzene molecules coating. The trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene molecules induces a deflection of the cantilevers modifying their diffracted color, which returns to the initial state by cis-trans relaxation. Interestingly, the mechanical imaging enables a simultaneous 2D mapping of the response thus enhancing the spatial resolution of the measurements. A tight correlation is found between the color output and the cantilever's deflection and curvature angle (sensitivities of 5 × 10^-3  Hue µm^-1 and 1.5 × 10^-1  Hue (°)^-1 ). These findings highlight the suitability of low-stiffness MMC as an enabling technology for monitoring molecular changes with unprecedented simplicity, high-throughput capability, and functionalities.

Unraveling the surface properties of PMMA/azobenzene blends as coating films with photoreversible surface polarity

Various reports demonstrated that azobenzene derivatives are the chromophore of choice in photoresponsive surfaces showing reversible surface polarity. Hitherto the surface study of coating films based on polymer/azobenzene blends using contact angle measurements remained unexplored. To provide insight into the surface polarity of polymer/dye blend films, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends containing photoresponsive 4-hydroxy-4′-methylazobenzene (AZO1) and 4,4′-dimethylazobenzene (AZO2) as coating films on clear glass substrates are investigated in this work. Contact angle measurements were carried out to unravel the role of substituents in the surface polarity and the orientation of chromophores in the coating matrices before and after UV light (λ_max = 365 nm) irradiation. Changes in water contact angles measured on the PMMA/azobenzene coating films indicated that the surface polarity is reversible as the chromophores underwent reversible trans–cis isomerisation. It has been revealed that the repeated trans–cis isomerisation led to the random reorientation and arrangement of chromophores in PMMA/AZO1 coating films. Then, to indicate the possibility of the disruption of interfacial interactions due to the repeated trans–cis isomerisation processes, as a proof of concept experiment, it is shown that the commercial acrylic-based pressure-sensitive sticker which adhered strongly to the PMMA/AZO1(13) coating film is peeled off from the coating surface after being subjected to a cycle of UV light irradiation for 12 hours, followed by dark conditions for another 12 hours within 14 days. The proof of concept study will lead to more development of smart photoresponsive coating films using simple polymer/dye blends.

Molecular Photoswitching in Confined Spaces

In nature, light is harvested by photoactive proteins to drive a range of biological processes, including photosynthesis, phototaxis, vision, and ultimately life. Bacteriorhodopsin, for example, is a protein embedded within archaeal cell membranes that binds the chromophore retinal within its hydrophobic pocket. Exposure to light triggers regioselective photoisomerization of the confined retinal, which in turn initiates a cascade of conformational changes within the protein, triggering proton flux against the concentration gradient, providing the microorganisms with the energy to live. We are inspired by these functions in nature to harness light energy using synthetic photoswitches under confinement. Like retinal, synthetic photoswitches require some degree of conformational flexibility to isomerize. In nature, the conformational change associated with retinal isomerization is accommodated by the structural flexibility of the opsin host, yet it results in steric communication between the chromophore and the protein. Similarly, we strive to design systems wherein isomerization of confined photoswitches results in steric communication between a photoswitch and its confining environment. To achieve this aim, a balance must be struck between molecular crowding and conformational freedom under confinement: too much crowding prevents switching, whereas too much freedom resembles switching of isolated molecules in solution, preventing communication.

In this Account, we discuss five classes of synthetic light-switchable compounds—diarylethenes, anthracenes, azobenzenes, spiropyrans, and donor–acceptor Stenhouse adducts—comparing their behaviors under confinement and in solution. The environments employed to confine these photoswitches are diverse, ranging from planar surfaces to nanosized cavities within coordination cages, nanoporous frameworks, and nanoparticle aggregates. The trends that emerge are primarily dependent on the nature of the photoswitch and not on the material used for confinement. In general, we find that photoswitches requiring less conformational freedom for switching are, as expected, more straightforward to isomerize reversibly under confinement. Because these compounds undergo only small structural changes upon isomerization, however, switching does not propagate into communication with their environment. Conversely, photoswitches that require more conformational freedom are more challenging to switch under confinement but also can influence system-wide behavior.

Although we are primarily interested in the effects of geometric constraints on photoswitching under confinement, additional effects inevitably emerge when a compound is removed from solution and placed within a new, more crowded environment. For instance, we have found that compounds that convert to zwitterionic isomers upon light irradiation often experience stabilization of these forms under confinement. This effect results from the mutual stabilization of zwitterions that are brought into close proximity on surfaces or within cavities. Furthermore, photoswitches can experience preorganization under confinement, influencing the selectivity and efficiency of their photoreactions. Because intermolecular interactions arising from confinement cannot be considered independently from the effects of geometric constraints, we describe all confinement effects concurrently throughout this Account.

Vibrational sum-frequency generation study of molecular structure, sterical constraints and nonlinear optical switching contrast of mixed alkyl-azobenzene self-assembled monolayers

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of azobenzene (AB) functionalized alkyl thiols on gold diluted with simple alkyl thiols provide a straightforward way to photochromic surfaces with high and tunable photoswitching efficiency. Trans-cis isomerization of the AB molecule changes the physical properties of the surface, including the nonlinear optical (NLO) response. Vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy as a nonlinear type of laser spectroscopy offers surface- and orientation-sensitive insight into the molecular structure of mixed SAMs. In this study, VSFG as well as ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the morphology, molecular structure, and NLO response of mixed SAMs with systematically varied surface composition. Methylazobenzene (MeAB) has been used as the molecular switch with the methyl substituent serving as orientational VSFG marker. Both short-chain and long-chain alkyl thiol co-ligands have been used to gain insight into the interplay between SAM structure and sterical constraints that are known to limit the free switching volume. Underlining the dominating role of sterical effects for controlling photochromic properties, a strong inhibition of the photoswitching efficiency and NLO response has been observed for the SAMs with an alkyl thiol co-ligand long enough to spatially extend into the layer of the MeAB chromophore. Overall, with <12% signal change, the relative NLO switching contrasts remained low in all cases. VSFG spectral trends clearly revealed that the presumably higher photoswitching efficiency upon dilution with the co-ligand is counteracted by a loss of structural order of the chromophore.

Polysilsesquioxane Nanowire Networks as an "Artificial Solvent" for Reversible Operation of Photochromic Molecules

Efficient isomerization of photochromic molecules often requires conformational freedom and is typically not available under solvent-free conditions. Here, we report a general methodology allowing for reversible switching of such molecules on the surfaces of solid materials. Our method is based on dispersing photochromic compounds within polysilsesquioxane nanowire networks (PNNs), which can be fabricated as transparent, highly porous, micrometer-thick layers on various substrates. We found that azobenzene switching within the PNNs proceeded unusually fast compared with the same molecules in liquid solvents. Efficient isomerization of another photochromic system, spiropyran, from a colorless to a colored form was used to create reversible images in PNN-coated glass. The coloration reaction could be induced with sunlight and is of interest for developing "smart" windows.

Mechanically Induced Switching of Molecular Layers

Within the field of switchable surfaces, azobenzenes are an extensively studied group of molecules, known for reversibly changing conformation upon illumination with light of different wavelengths. Relying on the ability of the molecules to change properties and structure as a response to external stimuli, they have been incorporated in various devices, such as molecular switches and motors. In contrast to the well-documented switching by light irradiation, we report the discovery of mechanically triggered switching of self-assembled azobenzene monolayers, resulting in changes of surface wettability, adhesion, and friction. This mechanically induced cis-trans isomerization is triggered either locally and selectively by AFM or macroscopically by particle impact. The process is optically reversible, enabling consecutive switching cycles. Collective switching behavior was also observed, propagating from the original point of impact in a domino-like manner. Finally, local force application facilitated nondestructive and erasable nanopatterning, the cis-trans nanolithography.

Repeated photoswitching performance of azobenzenes adsorbed on gold surfaces: a balance between space, intermolecular interactions, and phase separation

Arylazopyrazoles as Light-Responsive Molecular Switches in Cyclodextrin-Based Supramolecular Systems

A simple and high yield synthesis of water-soluble arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) featuring superior photophysical properties is reported. The introduction of a carboxylic acid allows the diverse functionalization of AAPs. Based on structural modifications of the switching unit the photophysical properties of the AAPs could be tuned to obtain molecular switches with favorable photostationary states. Furthermore, AAPs form stable and light-responsive host-guest complexes with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Our most efficient AAP shows binding affinities comparable to azobenzenes, but more effective switching and higher thermal stability of the Z-isomer. As a proof-of-principle, we investigated two CD-based supramolecular systems, containing either cyclodextrin vesicles (CDVs) or cyclodextrin-functionalized gold nanoparticles (CDAuNPs), which revealed excellent reversible, light-responsive aggregation and dispersion behavior. To conclude, AAPs have great potential to be incorporated as molecular switches in highly demanding and multivalent photoresponsive systems.

UV/Vis Spectroscopy Studies of the Photoisomerization Kinetics in Self-Assembled Azobenzene-Containing Adlayers

Direct comparative studies of the photoisomerization of azobenzene derivatives in self-assembled adlayers on Au and as free molecules in dichloromethane solution were performed using UV/vis spectroscopy. For all studied systems a highly reversible trans-cis isomerization in the adlayer is observed. Quantitative studies of the absorbance changes and photoisomerization kinetics reveal that in azobenzenes mounted as freestanding vertical groups on the surface via triazatriangulene-based molecular platforms photoswitching is nearly uninhibited by the local environment in the adlayer. The blue-shift of the π-π* transition in adlayers of these molecules is in good agreement with theoretical studies of the effect of excitonic coupling between the molecules. In contrast, in azobenzene-containing thiol self-assembled monolayers the fraction of photoswitching molecules and the photoisomerization kinetics are significantly reduced compared to free molecules in solution.

Switching at the nanoscale: light- and STM-tip-induced switch of a thiolated diarylethene self-assembly on Au(111)

The light-induced and STM-tip-induced switching of photochromic thiol functionalized terphenylthiazole-based diarylethene self-assembly on Au(111) has been investigated in ambient conditions. For such a purpose, we took advantage of the formation of highly ordered domains of opened-ring (1o) or closed-ring (1c) diarylethene isomers. We evidenced a STM-tip-induced switching for the 1o isomer characterized by a tip bias threshold of 1000 mV above which switching of all molecules of the ordered 1o domains occurs into the 1c isomer. In contrast, switching from 1c form into 1o form is not observed at the same tunnelling conditions within a domain formed by ordered 1c molecules. We compared tip-induced switching of ordered 1o domains and switching of single 1o isomers embedded in 1c domains. This led to the demonstration that the process of switching of the 1o isomer is determined by geometry of the molecules but also that the stability of the switched 1c isomer depends on the nature of the surrounding isomers. We also compare tip-induced switching and switching under the action of external UV light irradiation of ordered 1o domains. In contrast with STM tip-induced switching, the UV light induces switching of 1o domains into their stable 1c form, in agreement with a collective switching under irradiation, which cannot occur under the action of STM tip.

TiO2-assisted photoisomerization of azo dyes using self-assembled monolayers: case study on para-methyl red towards solar-cell applications

The optical and electronic properties of a TiO2 nanoparticle-assisted photo-isomerizable surface, prepared by an azo dye/TiO2 nanocomposite film, are examined experimentally and computationally. The azo dye, para-methyl red, undergoes photoisomerization at room temperature, catalyzed by the TiO2 nanoparticle supports, while it exhibits negligible photoisomerization in solvents under otherwise identical conditions. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory are employed to explain the origin of this photoisomerization in these dye···TiO2 nanoparticle self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The device performance of these SAMs when embedded into dye-sensitized solar cells is used to further elucidate the nature of this azo dye photoisomerization and relate it to the ensuing optoelectronic properties.

Ultrasensitive photoreversible molecular sensors of azobenzene-functionalized plasmonic nanoantennas

This Letter describes an unprecedentedly large and photoreversible localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength shift caused by photoisomerization of azobenzenes attached to gold nanoprisms that act as nanoantennas. The blue light-induced cis to trans azobenzene conformational change occurs in the solid state and controls the optical properties of the nanoprisms shifting their LSPR peak up to 21 nm toward longer wavelengths. This shift is consistent with the increase in thickness of the local dielectric environment (0.6 nm) surrounding the nanoprism and perhaps a contribution from plasmonic energy transfer between the nanoprism and azobenzenes. The effects of the azobenzene conformational change and its photoreversibility were also probed through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) showing that the electronic interaction between the nanoprisms and bound azobenzenes in their cis conformation significantly enhances the intensity of the Raman bands of the azobenzenes. The SERS data suggests that the isomerization is controlled by first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 1.0 × 10(-4) s(-1). Our demonstration of light-induced photoreversibility of this type of molecular machine is the first-step toward removing present limitations on detection of molecular motion in solid-state devices using LSPR spectroscopy with nanoprisms. Modulating the LSPR peak position and controlling energy transfer across the nanostructure-organic molecule interface are very important for the fabrication of plasmonic-based nanoscale devices.

Different formation kinetics and photoisomerization behavior of self-assembled monolayers of thiols and dithiolanes bearing azobenzene moieties

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing azobenzene moieties are very attractive for a wide range of applications, including molecular electronics and photonics, bio-interface engineering and sensoring. However, very little is known about the aggregation and photoswitching behavior that azobenzene units undergo during the SAM formation process. Here, we demonstrate that the formation of thiol-based SAMs containing azobenzenes (denoted as AzoSH) on gold surfaces is characterised by a two-step adsorption kinetics, while a three-step assembly process has been identified for dithiolane-based SAMs containing azobenzenes (denoted AzoSS). The H-aggregation on the AzoSS SAMs was found to be remarkably dependent on the time of self-assembly, with less aggregation as a function of time. While photoisomerization of the AzoSH was suppressed for all different assembly times, the reversible trans-cis photoisomerization of AzoSS SAMs formed over 24 hours was clearly observed upon alternating UV and Vis light irradiation. We contend that detailed information on formation kinetics and related optical properties is of crucial importance for elucidating the photoswitching capabilities of azobenzene-based SAMs.

Effect of the steric molecular structure of azobenzene on the formation of self-assembled monolayers with a photoswitchable surface morphology

The growth processes of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two azobenzene disulfides formed on flat gold surfaces were studied to confirm the effect of the intermolecular interactions between azobenzene molecules on the light-triggered surface morphologies of the SAMs. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy were employed to study the SAMs and their growth processes. The SAMs studied were of bulky-substituted azobenzene disulfide (Et-2S), and nonsubstituted azobenzene disulfide (Me-2S), formed on a gold-covered substrate, and had a twisted and a planar structure, respectively. STM-based imaging of the initial stage of the self-assembly of the Et-2S molecules revealed that cleavage of the disulfide bond occurred on the gold surface, and phase-separated domains composed of azobenzenethiolate and dodecanethiolate were formed. Time-dependent AFM-based imaging illustrated the mechanism through which the Et-2S SAM grew-it was through the formation of dendritic aggregates and islands-eventually resulting in phase-separated domains with a wormlike structure. This wormlike structure showed noticeable changes in its surface morphology upon irradiation with UV and visible light. On the other hand, while the growth process for the Me-2S SAM was similar to that of the Et-2S SAM, the final Me-2S SAM had smooth domains whose morphology did not exhibit photoswitchability. The TD and XP spectra of the SAMs showed that the number of adsorbed Et-2S molecules reached a point of saturation after a 24 h long immersion while the number of Me-2S molecules increased even after a 336 h long immersion. Furthermore, the area occupied by the azobenzene moiety in the Et-2S SAM was constant regardless of the immersion time, whereas that in the Me-2S SAM decreased with the immersion time. These results indicated that the strength of the interactions between the azobenzene molecules significantly influenced the aggregate-forming ability in SAMs.

Manipulation of liquid filaments on photoresponsive microwrinkles

Microwrinkle grooves serve as open microchannel capillaries, where the capillary action depends on the wettability of a liquid on the groove surface. Here, we report the photoinduced capillary action of a liquid in such microwrinkle grooves. The wettability is changed through the irradiation of a photoresponsive microwrinkle surface. By utilizing micropattern light-projection apparatus, we prepare liquid filaments that fill only the microgrooves prescribed by the patterned light, with micrometer-scale spatial resolution. This new technology enables the precise spatial control of liquids on a solid surface, and thus, is applicable in the fields of micropatterning and open-channel microfluidics.

Light responsive polymer membranes: a review

In recent years, stimuli responsive materials have gained significant attention in membrane separation processes due to their ability to change specific properties in response to small external stimuli, such as light, pH, temperature, ionic strength, pressure, magnetic field, antigen, chemical composition, and so on. In this review, we briefly report recent progresses in light-driven materials and membranes. Photo-switching mechanisms, valved-membrane fabrication and light-driven properties are examined. Advances and perspectives of light responsive polymer membranes in biotechnology, chemistry and biology areas are discussed.

Azobenzene photoswitches for biomolecules

The photoisomerization of azobenzene has been known for almost 75 years but only recently has this process been widely applied to biological systems. The central challenge of how to productively couple the isomerization process to a large functional change in a biomolecule has been met in a number of instances and it appears that effective photocontrol of a large variety of biomolecules may be possible. This critical review summarizes key properties of azobenzene that enable its use as a photoswitch in biological systems and describes strategies for using azobenzene photoswitches to drive functional changes in peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates (192 references).
