Insights into the origins of inverted circular dichroism in thin films of a chiral side chain polyfluorene

We synthesized a fluorene-bithiophene co-polymer with chiral side chains (cPFT2) and investigated its chiroptical properties via synchotronradiation circular dichroism. We observed that thin films of the polymer display an intense circular dichroism (CD) upon annealing, which is of opposite handedness to the CD reported for similar polyfluorenes bearing the same enantiomeric chiral side chain. We then contrast the properties of this polymer with chiral side chain fluorene homopolymer (cPF) and observe large differences in their thin film morphology. Using photoluminescence spectroscopy, we uncover evidence of polymer chain bending in cPFT2, which is further supported by theoretical calculations, and propose an explanation for the observed inverted optical activity.

Enhanced Circular Dichroism and Polarized Emission in an Achiral, Low Band Gap Bismuth Iodide Perovskite Derivative

Lead halide perovskites and related main-group halogenido metalates offer unique semiconductor properties and diverse applications in photovoltaics, solid-state lighting, and photocatalysis. Recent advances in incorporating chiral organic cations have led to the emergence of chiral metal-halide semiconductors with intriguing properties, such as chiroptical activity and chirality-induced spin selectivity, enabling the generation and detection of circularly polarized light and spin-polarized electrons for applications in spintronics and quantum information. However, understanding the structural origin of chiroptical activity remains challenging due to macroscopic factors and experimental limitations. In this work, we present an achiral perovskite derivative [Cu2(pyz)3(MeCN)2][Bi3I11] (CuBiI; pyz = pyrazine; MeCN = acetonitrile), which exhibits remarkable circular dichroism (CD) attributed to the material's noncentrosymmetric nature. CuBiI features a unique structure as a poly-threaded iodido bismuthate, with [Bi3I11]2- chains threaded through a cationic two-dimensional coordination polymer. The material possesses a low, direct optical band gap of 1.70 eV. Notably, single crystals display both linear and circular optical activity with a large anisotropy factor of up to 0.16. Surprisingly, despite the absence of chiral building blocks, CuBiI exhibits a significant degree of circularly polarized photoluminescence, reaching 4.9%. This value is comparable to the results achieved by incorporating chiral organic molecules into perovskites, typically ranging from 3-10% at zero magnetic field. Our findings provide insights into the macroscopic origin of CD and offer design guidelines for the development of materials with high chiroptical activity.

Metal-Enhanced Helical Chirality of Coil Macromolecules: Bioinspired by Metal Coordination-Induced Protein Folding

Although the supramolecular helical structures of biomacromolecules have been studied, the examples of supramolecular systems that are assembled using coils to form helical polymer chains are still limited. Inspired by enhanced helical chirality at the supramolecular level in metal coordination-induced protein folding, a series of alanine-based coil copolymers (poly-(l-co-d)-ala-NH₂) carrying (l)- and (d)-alanine pendants were synthesized as a fresh research model to study the cooperative processes between homochirality property and metal coordination. The complexes of poly-(l-co-d)-ala-NH₂ and metal ions underwent a coil-to-helix transition and exhibited remarkable nonlinear effects based on the enantiomeric excess of the monomer unit in the copolymers, affording enhanced helical chirality compared to poly-(l-co-d)-ala-NH₂. More importantly, the synergistic effect of amplification of asymmetry and metal coordination triggered the formation of a helical molecular orbital on the polymer backbone via the coordination with the d orbital of copper ions. Thus, the helical chirality enhancement degree of poly-(l-co-d)-ala-NH₂/Cu²⁺ complexes (31.4) is approximately 3 times higher than that of poly-(l-co-d)-ala-NH₂/Ag⁺ complexes (9.8). This study not only provides important mechanistic insights into the enhancement of helical chirality for self-assembly but also establishes a new strategy for studying the homochiral amplification of asymmetry in biological supramolecular systems.

Circularly Polarized Photoluminescence of Chiral 2D Halide Perovskites at Room Temperature

Chiral halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention because of their chiroptical, second-harmonic generation, and ferroelectricity properties and their potential application in chiroptoelectronics and chiral spintronics. However, the fundamental research of these properties is insufficient. In this work, chiral perovskites were synthesized using precursor solutions with various stoichiometric ratios ⟨n⟩. The chiral perovskite film prepared from the solution with ⟨n⟩ = 1 is composed of (R-/S-/rac-MBA)₂PbBr₄, whereas the films prepared from the solutions with ⟨n⟩ larger than 1 are a mixture of (R-/S-/rac-MBA)₂(CsMA)_n-1Pb_nBr_3n+1 with n = 1 and large n values. A photoluminescence quantum yield of approximately 90 was obtained. Symmetric circular dichroism (CD) spectra were observed without an external magnetic field. Under various magnetic fields, magnetic field-induced CD features are superimposed with the intrinsic chirality-induced CD features. For the ⟨n⟩ = 1 chiral perovskite film, the energy level splitting induced by chiral molecules are a few 10 μeV, whereas the energy level splitting induced by magnetic fields are at the range of ∼-250 to ∼250 μeV. Circularly polarized photoluminescence spectra were observed at room temperature and associated with the spin-preserved energy funneling from highly energetic phases to the lower energetic phases.

Protected amino acids as a nonbonding source of chirality in induction of single-handed screw-sense to helical macromolecular catalysts

Chiral nonbonding interaction with N-protected amino acid methyl esters used as chiral additives in achiral solvents allows dynamic induction of single-handed helical conformation in poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s (PQX) bearing only achiral substituents. Ac-l-Pro-OMe, for instance, allows induction of energy preference of 0.16 kJ mol-1 per monomer unit for the M-helical structure over the P-helix in t-butyl methyl ether (MTBE). With this new mode of screw-sense induction, homochiral screw-sense has been induced in virtually achiral poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s 1000-mer containing phosphine pendants (PQXphos). Use of PQXphos as a helically dynamic ligand along with Ac-Pro-OMe (l or d) as a chiral additive in MTBE allowed a highly enantioselective Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction with up to 95% enantiomeric excess.

Chirality in polythiophenes: A review

Chiroptical polythiophene (PTh), as one of the most important chiral conductive polymers, is an emerging and hot topic in chiral materials, which shows great application potentials in fields as diverse as chiral sensing and separation, asymmetry catalysis, chiroptoelectronics, and even chiro-spintronics. This review summarizes progress in chiral polythiophenes (PThs) in the past 10 years, including the synthesis, properties and applications. Main focus is placed on the manner in which chirality is implemented and the optical activity of the chiral PThs. We showcase examples in which the chirality of PThs is induced by side chain substituents with point, planar, and axial chirality or arises from external chiral media. Application of chiral PThs is also included. Finally, perspectives for further development are offered.

Chiral Metal Nanoparticle Superlattices Enabled by Porphyrin-Based Supramolecular Structures

Herein, we show that chiral metal nanoparticle superlattices can be produced through coassembly of achiral metal nanoparticles and porphyrin-based organic molecules. This chirality transfer from molecules to nanoparticle superstructures across three orders of magnitude in length scale is enabled by the hetero chain-chain van der Waals interactions. As far as we know, these are the first chiral nanoparticle assemblies based on chirality transfer through weak van der Waals forces. The dimensionality of the nanoparticle superlattices (1D chiral chains, 2D chiral sheets (cones), and 3D chiral particles) can be controlled based on a same synthetic chiral porphyrin molecule. Metalation of these porphyrin molecules with zinc cations results in the switching of molecular packing from J-type to H-type, which thereby produces 1D chiral nanoparticle chains. Functionalization of these zinc porphyrins with oleylamine can induce the assembly of nanoparticles into 2D chiral nanoparticle sheets.

Spin Filtering in Supramolecular Polymers Assembled from Achiral Monomers Mediated by Chiral Solvents

In past studies, spin selective transport was observed in polymers and supramolecular structures that are based on homochiral building blocks possessing stereocenters. Here we address the question to what extent chiral building blocks are required for observing the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. We demonstrate the CISS effect in supramolecular polymers exclusively containing achiral monomers, where the supramolecular chirality was induced by chiral solvents that were removed from the fibers before measuring. Spin-selective transport was observed for electrons transmitted perpendicular to the fibers’ long axis. The spin polarization correlates with the intensity of the CD spectra of the polymers, indicating that the effect is nonlocal. It is found that the spin polarization increases with the samples’ thickness and the thickness dependence is the result of at least two mechanisms: the first is the CISS effect, and the second reduces the spin polarization due to scattering. Temperature dependence studies provide the first support for theoretical work that suggested that phonons may contribute to the spin polarization.

Competition between chiral solvents and chiral monomers in the helical bias of supramolecular polymers

Solute-solvent interactions are key for the assembly and proper functioning of biomacromolecules and play important roles in many fields of organic and polymer chemistry. Despite numerous reports describing the effects of (chiral) solvents on helical conformations of (supramolecular) polymers, the combination of chiral solvents and chiral monomers is unexplored. Here we report diastereomeric differences in the supramolecular polymerization of enantiomers of chiral triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxamides in chiral chlorinated solvents. Competition between the preferences induced by the stereocentres of the assembled monomers and those present in the solvent molecules results in unforeseen temperature-dependent solvation effects. By combining experiments and mathematical modelling, we show that the observed differences between enantiomers originate from the combined additive entropic effects of stereocentres present in the monomer and in the solvent. Remarkably, copolymerizations show that the chiral solvent can bias the copolymer helicity and thereby overrule the helical preference of the monomers. Our results highlight the importance of cumulative solvation effects in supramolecular polymerizations.

Resonance in Chirogenesis and Photochirogenesis: Colloidal Polymers Meet Chiral Optofluidics

Metastable colloids made of crystalline and/or non-crystalline matters render abilities of photonic resonators susceptible to chiral chemical and circularly polarized light sources. By assuming that μm-size colloids and co-colloids consisting of π- and/or σ-conjugated polymers dispersed into an optofluidic medium are artificial models of open-flow, non-equilibrium coacervates, we showcase experimentally resonance effects in chirogenesis and photochirogenesis, revealed by gigantic boosted chiroptical signals as circular dichroism (CD), optical rotation dispersion, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and CPL excitation (CPLE) spectral datasets. The resonance in chirogenesis occurs at very specific refractive indices (RIs) of the surrounding medium. The chirogenesis is susceptible to the nature of the optically active optofluidic medium. Moreover, upon an excitation-wavelength-dependent circularly polarized (CP) light source, a fully controlled absolute photochirogenesis, which includes all chiroptical generation, inversion, erase, switching, and short-/long-lived memories, is possible when the colloidal non-photochromic and photochromic polymers are dispersed in an achiral optofluidic medium with a tuned RI. The hand of the CP light source is not a determining factor for the product chirality. These results are associated with my experience concerning amphiphilic polymerizable colloids, in which, four decades ago, allowed proposing a perspective that colloids are connectable to light, polymers, helix, coacervates, and panspermia hypotheses, nuclear physics, biology, radioisotopes, homochirality question, first life, and cosmology.

Natural optical activity as the origin of the large chiroptical properties in π-conjugated polymer thin films

Polymer thin films that emit and absorb circularly polarised light have been demonstrated with the promise of achieving important technological advances; from efficient, high-performance displays, to 3D imaging and all-organic spintronic devices. However, the origin of the large chiroptical effects in such films has, until now, remained elusive. We investigate the emergence of such phenomena in achiral polymers blended with a chiral small-molecule additive (1-aza[6]helicene) and intrinsically chiral-sidechain polymers using a combination of spectroscopic methods and structural probes. We show that – under conditions relevant for device fabrication – the large chiroptical effects are caused by magneto-electric coupling (natural optical activity), not structural chirality as previously assumed, and may occur because of local order in a cylinder blue phase-type organisation. This disruptive mechanistic insight into chiral polymer thin films will offer new approaches towards chiroptical materials development after almost three decades of research in this area.

Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Chirogenesis and Pfeiffer Effect in Optically Inactive EuIII and TbIII Tris(β-diketonate) Upon Intermolecular Chirality Transfer From Poly- and Monosaccharide Alkyl Esters and α-Pinene: Emerging Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) and Circular Dichroism (CD)

We report emerging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) at 4f-4f transitions when lanthanide (Eu^III and Tb^III) tris(β-diketonate) embedded to cellulose triacetate (CTA), cellulose acetate butyrate (CABu), D-/L-glucose pentamethyl esters (D-/L-Glu), and D-/L-arabinose tetramethyl esters (D-/L-Ara) are in film states. Herein, 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate (fod) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (dpm) were chosen as the β-diketonates. The g_lum value of Eu(fod)₃ in CABu are +0.0671 at 593 nm (⁵D0→7F₁) and −0.0059 at 613 nm (⁵D0→7F₂), respectively, while those in CTA are +0.0463 and −0.0040 at these transitions, respectively. The g_lum value of Tb(fod)₃ in CABu are −0.0029 at 490 nm (⁵D4→7F₆), +0.0078 at 540 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), and −0.0018 at 552 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), respectively, while those in CTA are −0.0053, +0.0037, and −0.0059 at these transitions, respectively. D-/L-Glu and D-/L-Ara induced weaker g_lum values at 4f-4f transitions of Eu(fod)₃, Tb(fod)₃, and Tb(dpm)₃. For comparison, Tb(dpm)₃ in α-pinene showed clear CPL characteristics, though Eu(dpm)₃ did not. A surplus charge neutralization hypothesis was applied to the origin of attractive intermolecular interactions between the ligands and saccharides. This idea was supported from the concomitant opposite tendency in upfield ¹⁹F-NMR and downfield ¹H-NMR chemical shifts of Eu(fod)₃ and the opposite Mulliken charges between F-C bonds (fod) and H-C bonds (CTA and D-/L-Glu). An analysis of CPL excitation (CPLE) and CPL spectra suggests that (+)- and (–)-sign CPL signals of Eu^III and Tb^III at different 4f-4f transitions in the visible region are the same with the (+)-and (–)-sign exhibited by CPLE bands at high energy levels of Eu^III and Tb^III in the near-UV region.

Asymmetric Catalysis in Chiral Solvents: Chirality Transfer with Amplification of Homochirality through a Helical Macromolecular Scaffold

Use of chiral solvents in asymmetric synthesis as a sole source of enantioselection remains largely unexplored in organic synthesis. We found that the use of a helical macromolecular catalyst of which helical chirality is dynamically formed in chiral solvents allowed several mechanistically different reactions to proceed with high enantioselectivity. In this system, the chirality of the solvent, such as limonene, induces a configurational imbalance to the helical macromolecular scaffold of the catalyst, and in turn to the reaction products through palladium-catalyzed asymmetric reactions including Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (up to 98% ee), styrene hydrosilylation (up to 95% ee), and silaboration (up to 89% ee). Not only enantiomerically pure limonene but also limonene with low enantiomeric excesses induce single-handed helical structures with majority-rule-based amplification of homochirality. The helical conformation of the macromolecular catalyst was retained even in the absence of limonene in the solid state, enabling asymmetric cross-coupling in achiral solvent with high enantioselectivity.

Organic Chiral Charge Transfer Magnets

In this work, through designing organic helix donor-acceptor complexes, one type of room-temperature chiral magnet was reported. Within these chiral charge transfer magnets, circularly polarized light could induce a larger saturation magnetization compared to linearly polarized light illumination with identical intensity. Moreover, the transmission light polarization from chiral magnets could be tuned via applying the magnetic field. Overall, room-temperature organic chiral magnets with optomagnetic effects will enhance the function of organic magnetochiral materials.

Aggregation-induced chiroptical generation and photoinduced switching of achiral azobenzene-alt-fluorene copolymer endowed with left- and right-handed helical polysilanes

The left and right helicities of azobenzene (Azo)-containing main-chain polymer (PF8Azo) were successfully controlled with an enantiomeric pair of rigid rod-like helical polysilanes carrying (S)- and (R)-2-methylbutyl groups (PSi-S and PSi-R, respectively) as their hetero-aggregates in a mixture of chloroform and methanol solvents and in the solid state. Optimizing the good and poor cosolvents and their volume fractions showed that the molar ratio of PF8Azo to PSi-S/-R and the molecular weight of PF8Azo were crucial to boost the CD amplitudes of PF8Azo/PSi-S and PF8Azo/PSi-R hetero-aggregates. The photoresponsive trans–cis transformation caused noticeable changes in the sign and magnitude of the chiroptical behavior due to the hetero-aggregates. Moreover, the optically active PF8Azo homo-aggregates were produced by complete photoscissoring reactions at 313 nm, which could be assigned to the Siσ–Siσ* transitions of PSi-S and PSi-R.

The helicity of PF8Azo was successfully induced by UV-decomposable chiral polysilanes, and PF8Azo/PSi-S and PF8Azo/PSi-R hetero-aggregates were subjected to trans–cis photoisomerization.

Different phase-dominated chiral assembly of polyfluorenes induced by chiral solvation: axial and supramolecular chirality

The introduction of chirality in an achiral system will not only help avoid the tedious and expensive synthesis of chiral substances or catalysts but also greatly expand the ranges of chiral compounds. Herein, the induction of chirality in achiral polyfluorene (PF2/6 and PF8) with different alkyl chains at the C9 position of fluorene was achieved using a binary solvent system, in which ethanol was used as a poor solvent and chiral limonene was employed simultaneously as a good solvent and chiral solvent. The circular dichroism (CD), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra demonstrated that the structures of PFs with linear/branched alkyl side chains and the volume fractions of the cosolvents had an obvious effect on the generation of chirality driven by chiral solvation. During the chiral assembly processes of PFs, PF8 with a linear alkyl side chain demonstrated the obvious chiral β phase, while PF2/6 with a branched alkyl side chain only showed the chiral α phase. WAXD data also confirmed the existence of quite different phases of PF8 and PF2/6. The first induced chirality of PF with a branched alkyl side chain (PF2/6) will help the further understanding of the chiral assembly mechanism of PFs driven by chiral solvation. The induced chirality of PF2/6 was axial chirality of the PF chain but the chirality of PF8 was from the supramolecular chiral assembly of the PF chains. The linear dependence of the maximum CD and g_CD values on the enantiomeric purity of chiral limonene demonstrated that the achiral PFs have a potential application as chiral sensors to detect the ee value of limonene.

The chiral solvation induced chirality in achiral polyfluorenes showed the axial chirality for PF2/6 with branched side alkyl chain, but supramolecular chirality for PF8 with linear side alkyl chain.

Chirality Construction from Preferred π-π Stacks of Achiral Azobenzene Units in Polymer: Chiral Induction, Transfer and Memory

The induction of supramolecular chirality from achiral polymers has been widely investigated in composite systems consisting of a chiral guest, achiral host, and solvents. To further study and understand the process of chirality transfer from a chiral solvent or chiral molecules to an achiral polymer backbone or side-chain units, an alternative is to reduce the components in the supramolecular assembled systems. Herein, achiral side-chain azobenzene (Azo)-containing polymers, poly(6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate) (PAzoMA), with different M_ns, were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Preferred chirality from supramolecular assembled trans-Azo units of PAzoMAs is successfully induced solely by the neat limonene. These aggregates of the polymers in limonene solution were characterized by circular dichroism (CD), UV-vis spectra, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) under different temperatures. The temperature plays an important role in the course of chiral induction. Meanwhile, supramolecular chirality can be constructed in the solid films of the achiral side-chain Azo-containing polymers that were triggered by limonene vapors. Also, it can be erased after heated above the glass transition temperature (T_g) of the polymer, and recovered after cooling down in the limonene vapors. A chiroptical switch can be built by alternately changing the temperature. The solid films show good chiral memory behaviors. The current results will facilitate studying the mechanism of chirality transfer induced by chiral solvent and improve potential application possibilities in chiral film materials.

Direct Detection of Hardly Detectable Hidden Chirality of Hydrocarbons and Deuterated Isotopomers by a Helical Polyacetylene through Chiral Amplification and Memory

We report the first direct chirality sensing of a series of chiral hydrocarbons and isotopically chiral compounds (deuterated isotopomers), which are almost impossible to detect by conventional optical spectroscopic methods, by a stereoregular polyacetylene bearing 2,2'-biphenol-derived pendants. The polyacetylene showed a circular dichroism due to a preferred-handed helix formation in response to the hardly detectable hidden chirality of saturated tertiary or chiroptical quaternary hydrocarbons, and deuterated isotopomers. In sharp contrast to the previously reported sensory systems, the chirality detection by the polyacetylene relies on an excess one-handed helix formation induced by the chiral hydrocarbons and deuterated isotopomers via significant amplification of the chirality followed by its static memory, through which chiral information on the minute and hidden chirality can be stored as an excess of a single-handed helix memory for a long time.

Pitch and Handedness of the Cholesteric Order in Films of a Chiral Alternating Fluorene Copolymer

The molecular organization in thermally annealed films of poly(9,9-bis((S)-3,7-dimethyloctyl)-2,7-fluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) is investigated using polarized light. Measurement of linear polarization in transmission and reflection as a function of layer thickness and orientation directly show a left handed cholesteric organization with a pitch length of 600 nm. Results are corroborated by measurements of circularly polarized reflection and generalized ellipsometry and are compared to calculations of the optical properties based on the Maugin–Oseen–DeVries model. For wavelengths near the lowest allowed optical transition, light with the same handedness as the cholesteric arrangement (left) is found to be reflected and transmitted with a probability higher than right circularly polarized light. Supramolecular Helical Systems: Helical Assemblies of Small Molecules, Foldamers, and Polymers with Chiral Amplification and Their Functions

In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Aggregation-induced scaffolding: photoscissable helical polysilane generates circularly polarized luminescent polyfluorene

An enantiopair of rigid rod-like helical polysilanes as a photoscissible scaffold allowed the production of CPL- and CD-active dioctylpolyfluorene aggregates associated with complete removal by a polysilane-selective photoscissoring reaction at 313 nm.
