Ratiometric fluorescent sensing of pyrophosphate with sp³-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes

Inorganic pyrophosphate is a key molecule in many biological processes from DNA synthesis to cell metabolism. Here we introduce sp3-functionalized (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with red-shifted defect emission as near-infrared luminescent probes for the optical detection and quantification of inorganic pyrophosphate. The sensing scheme is based on the immobilization of Cu2+ ions on the SWNT surface promoted by coordination to covalently attached aryl alkyne groups and a triazole complex. The presence of Cu2+ ions on the SWNT surface causes fluorescence quenching via photoinduced electron transfer, which is reversed by copper-complexing analytes such as pyrophosphate. The differences in the fluorescence response of sp3-defect to pristine nanotube emission enables reproducible ratiometric measurements in a wide concentration window. Biocompatible, phospholipid-polyethylene glycol-coated SWNTs with such sp3 defects are employed for the detection of pyrophosphate in cell lysate and for monitoring the progress of DNA synthesis in a polymerase chain reaction. This robust ratiometric and near-infrared luminescent probe for pyrophosphate may serve as a starting point for the rational design of nanotube-based biosensors.

Syntheses of water-soluble acyclic naphthalene oligomers and their applications in water

Water-soluble -CH2- bridged acyclic naphthalene oligomers (WN2 and WN3) were designed and prepared successfully. Interestingly, WN3 can be used in reversible dispersion of carbon nanotubes in water by changing the pH efficiently.

Spectroscopic studies of porphyrin functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes and their interaction with TiO₂ nanoparticles surface

UV-vis and fluorescence investigations about the non-covalent interaction, in ethanolic solutions, of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with Coproporphyrin-I, and its Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes (MCPIs) have been reported. Evidence of binding between MWCNTs and porphyrins was discovered from spectral adsorption decrease with respect to free porphyrins and by the exhibition of photoluminescence quenching with respect to free porphyrins demonstrating that MWCNT@MCPIs are potential donor-acceptor complexes. Equilibrium and kinetic aspects in the interactions with monolayer transparent TiO2 thin films with the obtained MWCNT@MCPIs are clarified showing their effective adsorption by porphyrin links on the TiO2 monolayer support, with respect to not only MWCNTs, according to the Langmuir model and with pseudo-first-order kinetics. Morphological description of the adsorption of MWCNT@MCPIs on TiO2 with scanning electron microscopy has been reported. The obtained experimental evidences describe therefore MWCNT@MCPIs as potential sensitizers in the DSSC (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell) applications.

A novel SWCNT platform bearing DOTA and β-cyclodextrin units. "One shot" multidecoration under microwave irradiation

The functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) via microwave-assisted grafting reactions enables efficient multidecoration in a single step. A novel water-soluble SWCNT platform was prepared via the simple 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides under dielectric heating. Thanks to a single grafting reaction the CNT surface binds in a 1 : 1 ratio an amino acidic β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivative and the DOTAMA moiety (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N'',N'''-tetraacetic acid monoamide). This novel "one shot" synthesis, compared with multistep functionalizations, preserves the SWCNT's structural integrity (TEM images). Besides thermogravimetric analyses, the determination of the amount of β-CD and DOTA moieties grafting onto the SWCNT's surface was performed on the basis of phenolphthalein and gadolinium complexation, respectively.

Ultrasensitive QRS made by supramolecular assembly of functionalized cyclodextrins and graphene for the detection of lung cancer VOC biomarkers

A novel electronic nose system comprising functionalized β-cyclodextrin wrapped reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sensors with distinct ability of discrimination of a set of volatile organic compounds has been developed. Non-covalent modification of chemically functionalized cyclodextrin with RGO is carried out by using pyrene adamantane as a linker wherever necessary, in order to construct a supramolecular assembly. The chemical functionality on cyclodextrin is varied utilising the principle of selective chemical modification of cyclodextrin. In the present study, the combined benefits of the host-guest inclusion complex formation ability and tunable chemical functionality of cyclodextrin, as well as the high surface area and electrical conductivity of graphene, are utilized for the development of a set of highly selective quantum resistive chemical vapour sensors (QRS), which can be assembled in an electronic nose.
