Abstract
![]()
The coordination chemistry of corrole has witnessed a
great improvement
in the past few years and its Periodic Table has been widened to be
so large that it is compared with that of porphyrins. However, Ni
and Zn ions, commonly used with porphyrins for both synthetic and
theoretical purposes, are sparsely reported in the case of corroles.
Here, we report synthetic protocols for preparing Ni and Zn triarylcorrole
complexes. In the case of Zn, the preliminary oxidation of the free
base corrole in DMSO to the neutral corrole radical is a necessary
step to obtain the coordination of the metal ion, because the direct
reaction led to the formation of an open-chain tetrapyrrole. The Ni
complex could be directly obtained by heating the free base corrole
and Ni(II) salt to 100 °C in a DMSO solution containing FeCl3. The non-innocent nature of the corrole ligand for both complexes
has been elucidated by EPR, and in the case of the Zn derivative the
first spectroelectrochemical characterization is presented. The oxidation of triarylcorrole to the
corresponding neutral
radical species in DMSO is a key step to allow the preparation of
the corresponding Ni and Zn complexes. Without this step, the oxidative
ring opening of the macrocycle occurs, leading to the formation of
a linear tetrapyrrole. The spectroscopic characterization of these
species indicates their radical character. The stability of the Zn
complex can be improved by peripheral substitution.

Abstract
The diverse coordination modes and electronic features of actinide complexes of porphyrins and related oligopyrrolic systems (referred to as "porpyrinoids") have been the subject of interest since the 1960s. Given their stability and accessibility, most work with actinides has focused on thorium and uranium. This trend is also seen in the case of porphyrinoid-based complexation studies. Nevertheless, the diversity of ligand environments provided by porphyrinoids has led to the stabilization of a number of unique complexes with the early actinides that are often without structural parallel within the broader coordination chemical lexicon. This review summarizes key examples of prophyrinoid actinide complexes reported to date, including the limited number of porphyrinoid systems involving transuranic elements. The emphasis will be on synthesis and structure; however, the electronic features and reactivity pattern of representative systems will be detailed as well. Coverage is through December of 2021.

A three-component
reaction of antiaromatic meso-mesityl-3-nitronorcorrolatonickel(II) 1-NO2 with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate and PBu3 yields aromatic
zwitterionic corrole nickel(II) complexes 3-R with one
of the meso-substituents comprising a positively
charged tributyl phosphonium group and negatively charged coordination
core. Reaction of 1-NO2 with PBu3 alone resulted in a nonaromatic chiral adduct 5 of
a zwitterionic phlorine character with a −PBu3+ group at a pyrrole β-position.

Abstract
One-electron oxidation of a GaIII -corrole with N(4-BrC6 H4 )3 SbCl6 resulted in an air-stable non-innocent GaIII -corrole radical. The single-crystal X-ray crystallography of the 2,17-bis-formyl-5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrolato gallium(III)(chloride) radical ([3-Cl]. ) revealed delocalization of the unpaired electron, which was further confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and spin density distribution plot. In addition, the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), anisotropy-induced current density (AICD) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) supported a [17] π-electron-conjugated (or antiaromatic) radical.

Abstract
This review covers the functionalization reactions of meso-arylcorroles, both at the inner core, as well as the peripheral positions of the macrocycle. Experimental details for the synthesis of all known metallocorrole types and for the N-alkylation reactions are presented. Key peripheral functionalization reactions such as halogenation, formylation, carboxylation, nitration, sulfonation, and others are discussed in detail, particularly the nucleophilic aromatic substitution and the participation of corroles in cycloaddition reactions as 2π or 4π components (covering Diels-Alder and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions). Other functionalizations of corroles include a large diversity of reactions, namely Wittig reactions, reactions with methylene active compounds, formation of amines, amides, and imines, and metal catalyzed reactions. At the final section, the reactions involving oxidation and ring expansion of the corrole macrocycle are described comprehensively.

Abstract
Three copper triarylcorroles containing a [Formula: see text]-pyrrole nitro substituent were synthesized and characterized as to their spectral and electrochemical properties in nonaqueous media. The examined compounds are represented as [Formula: see text]-NO2(YPh)3CorCu, where Cor is the trianion of a triphenylcorrole and Y is a Cl, H or CH3 substituent at the para-position of the three meso-phenyl rings of the compound. The data from absorption spectra, electrochemistry and thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry are consistent with an initial assignment of Cu[Formula: see text]-Cor[Formula: see text] in CH2Cl2, DMF and pyridine and electrogeneration of a formal Cu(II) corrole with an unreduced macrocycle, represented as Cu[Formula: see text]-Cor[Formula: see text], after the first one-electron reduction in these solvents. The doubly reduced [Formula: see text]-nitrocorrole has a sharp Soret band at 439 nm and a well-defined Q-band at 611 nm in CH2Cl2. Similar absorption spectra are seen for the three examined doubly reduced nitrocorroles in DMF and pyridine, suggesting formation of a Cu(I) species with an unreduced macrocycle which is represented as Cu[Formula: see text]-Cor[Formula: see text]. Changes in redox potentials and absorption spectra of the nitrocorroles are examined as a function of solvent and substituents on the meso-phenyl rings of the compounds and comparisons are made between spectral and electrochemical data of the newly synthesized corroles and that of structurally related tetraarylcorroles lacking a [Formula: see text]-nitro group.

Abstract
The insertion of a -NO2 group onto the corrole framework represents a key step for subsequent synthetic manipulation of the macrocycle based on the chemical versatility of such a functionality. Here we report results of the investigation of a copper 3-NO2-triarylcorrolate in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions with "active" methylene carbanions, namely diethyl malonate and diethyl 2-chloromalonate. Although similar reactions on nitroporphyrins afford chlorin derivatives, nucleophilic attack on carbon-2 of corrole produces 2,3-difunctionalized Cu corrolates in acceptable yields (ca. 30%), evidencing once again the erratic chemistry of this contracted porphyrinoid.

Abstract
β-Nitrocorroles are potentially valuable platforms for the preparation of a wide range of more elaborated corrole derivatives possessing unique chemical functionalities and electronic properties. Here we report our results on the chemical manipulation of a copper 3-NO2-triarylcorrolate using different organic reactions, all involving the reduction of -NO2 to -NH2 at an early stage, followed by further transformations. By way of a β-acylated copper corrolate, a novel corrole derivative bearing an alkyl azide group on the peripheral positions was obtained and exploited in the Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition.

Abstract
The phenyl-iron complex of 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole was prepared by reaction of the starting chloro-iron complex with phenylmagnesium bromide in dichloromethane. The organometallic complex was fully characterized by a combination of spectroscopic methods, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All of these techniques support the description of the electronic structure of this phenyl-iron derivative as a low-spin iron(IV) coordinated to a closed-shell corrolate trianion and to a phenyl monoanion. Complete assignments of the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of the phenyl-iron derivative and the starting chloro-iron complex were performed on the basis of the NMR spectra of the regioselectively β-substituted bromo derivatives and the DFT calculations.

Abstract
The β-nitration reaction carried out on the corrole macrocycle has been shown to be extremely regioselective, although the reduced symmetry of the macrocycle could potentially lead to a huge number of possible regioisomers. We recently reported that the careful use of AgNO2/NaNO2 as a nitrating system enabled the achievement in good yields of mono- and dinitro-derivatives on both corrole free base and its copper complex, proving to be an efficient and cost-effective method. In this work, we present a detailed study of the scope of this method using TtBuCorrH3 as a model corrole. A further increase of the oxidant pushes the nitration up to the functionalization of three β-pyrrolic positions, although concomitant decomposition of the macrocycle is also observed. The application of the proven nitration method with a five-fold excess of both silver and sodium nitrites with respect to corrole, afforded the 2,3,17-(NO2)3-TtBuPCorrCu as the main product, in 25% yield, together with traces of another compound identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis as the 3,8,17-(NO2)3-TtBuPCorrCu isomer. In light of these recent results, we also reinvestigated the characterization of the nitration products obtained from bis-substitution reactions, allowing among others the identification of the copper 3,8-(NO2)2 corrolate.

Abstract
Functionalization of the β-pyrrolic positions of the corrole macrocycle with -NO(2) groups is limited at present to metallocorrolates due to the instability exhibited by corrole free bases under oxidizing conditions. A careful choice of the oxidant can limit the transformation of corroles into decomposition products or isocorrole species, preserving the corrole aromaticity, and thus allowing the insertion of nitro groups onto the corrole framework. Here we report results obtained by reacting 5,10,15-tritolylcorrole (TTCorrH(3)) with the AgNO(2)/NaNO(2) system, to give mono- and dinitrocorrole derivatives when stoichiometry is carefully controlled. Reactions were found to be regioselective, affording the 3-NO(2)TTCorrH(3) and 3,17-(NO(2))(2)TTCorrH(3) isomers as the main products in the case of mono- and disubstitution, in 53 and 20% yields, respectively. In both cases, traces of other mono- and disubstituted isomers were detected, which were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The influence of the β-nitro substituents on the corrole properties is studied in detail by UV-visible, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical characterization of these functionalized corroles. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations of the ground and excited state properties of these β-nitrocorrole derivatives also afforded significant information, closely matching the experimental observations. It is found that the β-NO(2) substituents conjugate with the π-aromatic system of the macrocycle, which initiates significant changes in both the spectroscopic and redox properties of the so functionalized corroles. This effect is more pronounced when the nitro group is introduced at the 2-position, because in this case the conjugation is, for steric reasons, more efficient than in the 3-nitro isomer.

Abstract
Corroles are unusual macrocycles that often exhibit chemical reactivity that is distinct from their closely related porphyrin cousins. Standard organic transformations with corroles often result in the formation of unexpected products. A survey of synthetic methods for the preparation of both meso-substituted and β-substituted corroles will give an overview of the different synthetic strategies. This review provides a comprehensive description of the chemical reactivity and functionalization of corroles, focusing especially on reactions at the periphery of the macrocycle. Formylation, nitration, bromination and chlorosulfonation reactions will be explored in detail. In addition, demetalation processes, reactivity of the N-pyrrolic nitrogens and the lability of the macrocycle ring toward expansion and ring-opening reactions will be discussed. Finally, the synthesis of super-structured (picket-fence, capped, and strapped) corroles and isocorroles will be surveyed.

Abstract
The nitration reaction of 2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene has been studied. The use of AgNO3 and a mixture of acetic acid and 1,2-dichloroethane as a mild nitrating system provides an optimized preparation of 9-nitro-2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene and a regioselective synthesis of 9,20-dinitro-2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene. While 25 min of reaction are needed to obtain the mononitrated compound, 4 h are necessary to yield a mixture of 9,20-dinitro and 9,19-dinitro 2,7,12,17- tetraphenylporphycene in a proportion of 3 to 1. From this mixture, the geometric isomers can be isolated by fractional crystallization. 9-Nitro-2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene can be reduced to the corresponding amino derivative, which is the starting material to obtain 9-(glutaric methylesteramide)- 2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene, a versatile derivative useful for conjugation.

Abstract
The modification of peripheral positions of corroles by introduction of nitro groups is an important functionalization of this macrocycle. The nitro substituent strongly influences the corrole behavior leading to the preparation of macrocycles with different properties, which can be of interest for their exploitation as catalysts, sensing layers in chemical sensors or in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In the last few years we have developed different routes for the β-nitration of the corrole ring, and we report here novel synthetic protocols which can allow the formation of tri- and tetranitro derivatives, as demonstrated by X-ray analysis. In all of the methodologies used, the presence of isocorrole species as reaction intermediates was established, which regenerated the corresponding corrole by metal insertion.

Abstract
Two different methods for the regioselective nitration of different meso-triarylcorroles leading to the corresponding β-substituted nitrocorrole iron complexes have been developed. A two-step procedure affords three Fe(III) nitrosyl products-the unsubstituted corrole, the 3-nitrocorrole, and the 3,17-dinitrocorrole. In contrast, a one-pot synthetic approach drives the reaction almost exclusively to formation of the iron nitrosyl 3,17-dinitrocorrole. Electron-releasing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of the triarylcorroles induce higher yields and longer reaction times than what is observed for the synthesis of similar triarylcorroles with electron-withdrawing functionalities, and these results can be confidently attributed to the facile formation and stabilization of an intermediate iron corrole π-cation radical. Electron-withdrawing substituents on the meso-aryl groups of triarylcorrole also seem to labilize the axial nitrosyl group which, in the case of the pentafluorophenylcorrole derivative, results in the direct formation of a disubstituted iron μ-oxo dimer complex. The influence of meso-aryl substituents on the progress and products of the nitration reaction was investigated. In addition, to elucidate the most important factors which influence the redox reactivity of these different iron nitrosyl complexes, selected compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible or FTIR spectroelectrochemistry in CH(2)Cl(2).

Abstract
Copper and germanium complexes of β-substituted nitrocorroles were reacted with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole to give the corresponding β-amino-β-nitro derivatives, in moderate to good yields. This is the first successful example of a vicarious nucleophilic substitution performed on corrole derivatives, because the same reaction carried out on silver complexes afforded the corresponding 6-azahemiporphycenes by way of corrole ring expansion. The first step of this work is related to the modification of a synthetic protocol for preparation of the β-substituted nitro corroles. The nitration reaction was carried out on a copper corrole using NaNO(2) as the primary source of NO(2)(-) coupled with AgNO(2) used as oxidant. By variation of the molar ratio of the reagents it was possible to direct the product distribution toward mono- and dinitro derivatives. The reaction between mono- and dinitro derivatives of (TtBuCorrCu) with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole gave good results, leading to the isolation of 2-(NH(2))-3-(NO(2))-TtBuCorrCu and 2,18-(NH(2))(2)-3,17-(NO(2))(2)-TtBuCorrCu in moderate yields. To elucidate factors that influence the reaction, and to highlight the different behavior observed for different metal complex substrates, the electrochemistry of three copper complexes, TtBuPCorrCu, (NO(2))TtBuPCorrCu, and (NO(2))(2)TtBuPCorrCu, was studied by cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry. The nitro groups on (NO(2))(x)TtBuPCorrCu are highly electron-withdrawing, which leads not only to a substantial positive shift of all redox potentials but also to a unique redox behavior and UV-vis spectrum of the singly reduced product as compared to the parent compound, TtBuPCorrCu. Finally, the amination reaction was carried out on a Ge(IV) nitrocorrolate, giving in good yield the 2-amino-3-nitroderivative, which was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography.
