Regioselective Substitution of BINOL

1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been extensively used as the chirality source in the fields of molecular recognition, asymmetric synthesis, and materials science. The direct electrophilic substitution at the aromatic rings of the optically active BINOL has been developed as one of the most convenient strategies to structurally modify BINOL for diverse applications. High regioselectivity has been achieved for the reaction of BINOL with electrophiles. Depending upon the reaction conditions and substitution patterns, various functional groups can be introduced to the specific positions, such as the 6-, 5-, 4-, and 3-positions, of BINOL. Ortho-lithiation at the 3-position directed by the functional groups at the 2-position of BINOL have been extensively used to prepare the 3- and 3,3'-substituted BINOLs. The use of transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has also been explored to functionalize BINOL at the 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-positions. These regioselective substitutions of BINOL have allowed the construction of tremendous amount of BINOL derivatives with fascinating structures and properties as reviewed in this article. Examples for the applications of the optically active BINOLs with varying substitutions in asymmetric catalysis, molecular recognition, chiral sensing and materials are also provided.

Binaphthyl-Based Chiral Macrocyclic Hosts for the Selective Recognition of Iodide Anions

In this study, we explorethe synthesis of binaphthyl-based chiral macrocyclic hosts for the first time. They exhibited the selective recognition abilities of iodide anions which can be favored over those of other anions (AcO^-, NO₃^-, ClO₄^-, HSO₄^-, Br^-, PF₆^-, H₂PO₄^-, BF₄^-, and CO₃F₃S^-), as confirmed by UV-vis, HRMS, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy experiments, as well as DFT calculations. Neutral aryl C-H···anion interactions play an important role in the formation complexes. The recognition process can be observed by the naked eye.

Non-enzymatic detection of serum glucose using a fluorescent nanopolymer probe

A fluorescent probe is described for the determination of serum glucose after hepatotoxin-induced liver injury. The probe is based on the use of a water-soluble polymer and has been prepared from a multi-functional azlactone polymer as the linker, amino boronic acid, and Alizarin Red as the signalling moiety. The excitation/emission peaks of the polymeric fluorescent probe are at 468/567 nm. Fluorescence is reduced on addition of glucose. Intensity drops linearly in the 0.1 mM to 14 mM glucose concentration range. The probe was applied to non-enzymatic detection of glucose in rat serum after CCl₄-induced liver damage. Graphical abstract A polymer based fluorescent probe has been constructed and applied for non-enzymatic monitoring of serum glucose following hepatotoxin induced liver injury.

A diboronic acid fluorescent sensor for selective recognition of d-ribose via fluorescence quenching

Herein we reported a novel boronic acid-based water-soluble sensor. It decreased the fluorescence by 50% when combined with 0.0146 M of d-ribose, while increased or not changed obviously after binding to other carbohydrates.

Fluorescent Probes for Sugar Detection

Herein, a new class of polymerizable boronic acid (BA) monomers are presented, which are used to generate soft hydrogels capable of accurate determination of saccharide concentration. By exploiting the interaction of these cationic BAs with an anionic fluorophore, 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (pyranine), a two-component sugar-sensing system was realized. In the presence of such cationic BAs ( o-BA, m-BA, and p-BA), the fluorescence of pyranine becomes quenched because of the formation of a nonfluorescent BA-fluorophore complex. Upon addition of saccharides, formation of a cyclic boronate ester results in dissociation of the nonfluorescent complex and recovery of the pyranine fluorescence. The response of this system was examined in solution with common monosaccharides, such as glucose, fructose, and galactose. Subsequent polymerization of the BA monomers yielded cross-linked hydrogels which showed similar reversible recovery of fluorescence in the presence of glucose.

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of a blue emitter with binaphthalene and carbazole units

A blue emitter, 3,3'-(2,2'-dimethoxy-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-6,6'-diyl)bis(9-benzyl-9H-carbazole), was synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction. The photophysical properties of the emitter in solution were firstly investigated by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission techniques. The results indicate that the emitter has excellent optical and electron transfer properties. The maximum absorption and emission peaks of the emitter are 302 nm and 406 nm with 67.4% fluorescence quantum yield in chloroform, respectively. Thermal stability study reveals that the emitter has a good thermal stability (Td > 330 °C, Tg > 160 °C). Electrochemical Redox properties of the emitters were measured by cyclic voltammetry, and the energy gaps of highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels are in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation. Furthermore, the multilayer electrochemcial device with the emitter was fabricated and its properties were explored. The wavelength of electroluminescence for the device with this emitter locates at 428 nm. These results indicate the emitter as a deep blue-emitting material has promising application in organic light-emitting diode devices.

Carbon Nanodots as Dual-Mode Nanosensors for Selective Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important product of oxidase-based enzymatic reactions, such as glucose/glucose oxidase (GOD) reaction. Therefore, the probing of generated H2O2 for achieving the detection of various carbohydrates and their oxidases is very significative. Herein, we report one kind of dual-emission carbon nanodots (CDs) that can serve as novel dual-mode nanosensors with both fluorometric and colorimetric output for the selective detection of H2O2. The dual-model nanosensors are established only by the undecorated dual-emission CDs, where significant fluorometric and colorimetric changes are observed with the addition of different concentrations of H2O2 in the CD solution, which benefit to the achievement of the naked-eye detection for H2O2. The mechanism of the nanosensors can be attributed to the fact that the external chemical stimuli like hydroxyl radicals from H2O2 bring about the change of surface properties and the aggregation of CDs, which dominate the emission and absorption of CDs. The constructed dual-mode nanosensors exhibit good biocompatibility and high selectivity toward H2O2 with a linear detection range spanning from 0.05 to 0.5 M and allow the detection of H2O2 as low as 14 mM.

A facile channel for D-glucose detection in aqueous solution

Three facile ensembles for sensing D-glucose are designed and constructed. The ensembles are comprised of fluorescent dye (NAHBDS) and boronic acid substituted viologens (BBVs) quenchers/receptors. The sensing processes of three ensembles (NAHBDS/o-BBV, NAHBDS/m-BBV and NAHBDS/p-BBV) to D-glucose were determined by fluorescence spectra at pH 7.4 buffer solution. The results show that NAHBDS/o-BBV and NAHBDS/m-BBV ensembles embody higher sensitivity for D-glucose with reversible "on-off" fluorescence response. More importantly, the recovery of relative intensity has good linear relation to low concentration of D-glucose. The action between the ensemble with D-glucose is dynamically reversible equilibrium process. The research results provide a new mode to design highly selective probe.

Three highly sensitive and selective switches for monosaccharides were composed by anionic polyelectrolyte PPPSO(3)Na and cationic viologen quencheres BBVs. The sensing processes of three ensembles (PPPSO(3)Na/o-BBV, PPPSO(3)Na/m-BBV and PPPSO(3)Na/p-BBV) to common seven monosaccharides have been determined by fluorescence spectra at pH 7.4 buffer solution. The results show that the three sensing ensembles all embody higher selectivity and sensitivity for d-fructose with reversible "on-off-on" fluorescence response. The research results can provide a new mode for developing highly selective probes.
