Abstract
Three hypothetical complexes were designed using diimides (PMDI, NTCDI, and PTCDI) as the acceptor unit and B(III)-submonoazaporphyrin (1) as the donor unit. These complexes have smaller HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (3.39-3.96 eV) than pristine 1 (6.61 eV). Further, the energy gap can be tuned by changing the number of benzene rings of these diimides. Remarkably, these proposed complexes possess considerable first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) (4865-6921 a.u.), and the regularity of the β0 values remained the same in the gas phase and toluene solvent conditions. There is an inverse relationship between the energy gap and the polarizability/first hyperpolarizability. In addition, absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals, and hole electron distributions were obtained using time-dependent density functional theory calculations to emphasize the relationship between structure and properties. Ultraviolet-Visible absorption spectra reveals that all complexes show satisfying IR working regions. Further analysis of the first hyperpolarizability density reveals the nature of the excellent NLO properties of the studied systems. This study can provide valuable insights for the development of potential high-performance NLO molecules.

Abstract
Photoinduced cascade of two 6π-electron six- and five-center electrocyclizations in aromatic azido imines is oxidatively controlled to yield complex fused benzimidazoles or indazoles. Formation of benzimidazoles occurs via an unprecedented carbon-to-nitrogen o-iminoaryl 1,2-shift.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method for the treatment of cancer, because of its advantages including a low toxicity, non-drug-resistant character, and targeting capability. From a photochemical aspect, a critical property of triplet photosensitizers (PSs) used for PDT reagents is the intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency. Conventional PDT reagents are limited to porphyrin compounds. However, these compounds are difficult to prepare, purify, and derivatize. Thus, new molecular structure paradigms are desired to develop novel, efficient, and versatile PDT reagents, especially those contain no heavy atoms, such as Pt or I, etc. Unfortunately, the ISC ability of heavy atom-free organic compounds is usually elusive, and it is difficult to predict the ISC capability of these compounds and design novel heavy atom-free PDT reagents. Herein, from a photophysical perspective, we summarize the recent developments of heavy atom-free triplet PSs, including methods based on radical-enhanced ISC (REISC, facilitated by electron spin-spin interaction), twisted π-conjugation system-induced ISC, the use of fullerene C60 as an electron spin converter in antenna-C60 dyads, energetically matched S1/Tn states-enhanced ISC, etc. The application of these compounds in PDT is also briefly introduced. Most of the presented examples are the works of our research group.

Abstract
π-conjugated aromatic diimides with chemical stability, heat resistance, and redox activity have attracted more attention due to their excellent fluorescence quantum yield in solution. The planar perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives generally have aggregation-induced emission quenching in the solid state, while the cyclic trimers based on pyromellitic diimides (PMDIs), naphthalene diimides (NDIs), and PDIs can increase the fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state and have large two-photon absorption cross section, which can be used as excellent nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Therefore, this paper will study the effects of multiple assembly modes of the three monomers on the NLO responses of materials. It was found that the assembly modes of 2PMDI-1NDI and 2NDI-1PDI exhibit larger third-order NLO response (γ) values, which was due to the larger conjugate surface of PDI effectively reducing the energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO. Compared with other assembly methods, 2PMDI-1NDI and 2NDI-1PDI were conducive to causing redshifts (150 nm) in the absorption spectrum. Therefore, the larger conjugate surface of PDI and the assembly mode of the isosceles triangle were more favorable for intramolecular charge transfer, thus improving its NLO properties.

Abstract
Heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers (PSs) are particularly of interest concerning both fundamental photochemistry study and practical applications. However, achieving efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) in planar heavy atom-free aromatic organic compounds is challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that two perylenebisimide (PBI) derivatives with anthryl and carbazole moieties fused at the bay position, showing twisted π-conjugation frameworks and red-shifted UV-vis absorption as compared to the native PBI chromophore (by 75-1610 cm-1), possess efficient ISC (singlet oxygen quantum yield: ΦΔ = 85%) and a long-lived triplet excited state (τT = 382 μs in fluid solution and τT = 4.28 ms in solid polymer film). Femtosecond transient absorption revealed ultrafast intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process in the twisted PBI derivatives (0.9 ps), and the ISC takes 3.7 ns. Pulsed laser excited time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra indicate that the triplet-state wave function of the twisted PBIs is mainly confined on the PBI core, demonstrated by the zero-field-splitting D parameter. Accordingly, the twisted derivatives have higher T1 energy (ET1 = 1.48-1.56 eV) as compared to the native PBI chromophore (1.20 eV), which is an advantage for the application of the derivatives as triplet PSs. Theoretical computation of the Franck-Condon density of states, based on excited-state dynamics methods, shows that the efficient ISC in the twisted PBI derivatives is due to the increased spin-orbit coupling matrix elements for the S1-T1 and S1-T2 states [spin-orbit coupling matrix element (SOCME): 0.11-0.44 cm-1. SOCME is zero for native PBI], as well as the Herzberg-Teller vibronic coupling. For the planar benzoPBI, the moderate ISC is due to S1 → T2 transition (SOCME: 0.03 cm-1. The two states share a similar energy, ca. 2.5 eV).

Abstract
Layer-by-layer (LBL) sequential solution processing of the active layer has been proven as an effective strategy to improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs), which could adjust vertical phase separation and improve device performance. Although perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives are typical acceptors with excellent photoelectric properties, there are few studies on PDI-based LBL OSCs. Herein, three PDI acceptors (TBDPDI-C5, TBDPDI-C11, and SdiPDI) were used to fabricate LBL and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OSCs, respectively. A series of studies including device optimization, photoluminescence (PL) quenching, dependence of light intensity, carrier mobility, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), and depth analysis X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (DXPS) were carried out to make clear the difference of the PDI-based LBL and BHJ OSCs. The results show that LBL OSCs possess better charge transport, higher and more balanced carrier mobility, less exciton recombination loss, more favorable film morphology, and proper vertical component distribution. Therefore, all the three PDI acceptor-based LBL OSCs exhibit higher performance than their BHJ counterparts. Among them, TBDPDI-C5 performs best with a power conversion efficiency of 6.11% for LBL OSCs, higher than its BHJ OSC (5.14%). It is the first time for PDI small molecular acceptors to fabricate high-efficiency OSCs by using an LBL solution-processed method.

Abstract
Symmetric ladder-type oligo(p-aniline)s and poly(p-aniline)s were successfully synthesized by an intramolecular ring closure in a highly efficient SNAr reaction from oligo(p-phenylene)s and poly(p-phenylene)s with fluorine (F) and secondary amine (NH) groups. Unlike Cadogan ring closure, the newly designed cyclization reaction will not produce a mixture of symmetric and nonsymmetric structures. Moreover, the introduction of the F atom does not hinder Suzuki polymerization. The result indicates that preparing regular oligomers and polymers with a nitrogen bridge is possible.

Abstract
We present a statistical analysis of femtosecond transient absorption microscopy applied to four different organic semiconductor thin films based on perylene-diimide (PDI). By achieving a temporal resolution of 12 fs with simultaneous sub-10 nm spatial precision, we directly probe the underlying exciton transport characteristics within 3 ps after photoexcitation free of model assumptions. Our study reveals sub-picosecond coherent exciton transport (12-45 cm2 s-1) followed by a diffusive phase of exciton transport (3-17 cm2 s-1). A comparison between the different films suggests that the exciton transport in the studied materials is intricately linked to their nanoscale morphology, with PDI films that form large crystalline domains exhibiting the largest diffusion coefficients and transport lengths. Our study demonstrates the advantages of directly studying ultrafast transport properties at the nanometer length scale and highlights the need to examine nanoscale morphology when investigating exciton transport in organic as well as inorganic semiconductors.

Abstract
A novel Se-annulated perylene diimide derivative tethered with polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles (POSS-2SePDI-POSS) was designed and prepared. The introduction of selenium atoms endows POSS-2SePDI-POSS with significant fluorescence quenching but enhanced excited-state absorption. As a result, POSS-2SePDI-POSS exhibits a distinct reverse saturable absorption characteristic, suggesting its potential application in optical limiting.

Abstract
Hetero-atom doped graphene is a two-dimensional material with a band gap, needed to build optoelectronic devices. However, research progress in this area has been sluggish due to synthetic challenges to build energy harvesting materials, especially donor-acceptor type hybrids. In the present study, using click chemistry, we have successfully synthesized a donor-acceptor hybrid comprised of N-doped graphene and perylenediimide (PDI), a well-known electron-accepting photosensitizer. The TGA and XPS results revealed the attachment of the PDI moiety in the hybrid. Ground and excited state interactions were monitored by a variety of spectral and electrochemical techniques. Finally, the ability of the present donor-acceptor hybrid to undergo photoinduced charge separation from singlet excited PDI was systematically probed using femtosecond transient spectral techniques. Evidence of charge separation was possible to achieve from comparison of transient and spectroelectrochemical results. These results suggest the potential use of covalently functionalized, substitutional N-doped graphene as a functional material for building optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
We have prepared a series of aniline-linked and fused perylene bisimides (PBIs) for making near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores. During this research, we found an unexpected rearrangement reaction on the PBI core for the first time. The aniline- and phenothiazine-fused PBIs exhibit excellent absorption ability and visible-to-NIR emission owing to their intramolecular charge transfer character.
