Electronic and Nonlinear Optical Properties of B(III)-Submonoazaporphyrin-π-Diimide Compounds: A Density Functional Theory Study

Three hypothetical complexes were designed using diimides (PMDI, NTCDI, and PTCDI) as the acceptor unit and B(III)-submonoazaporphyrin (1) as the donor unit. These complexes have smaller HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (3.39-3.96 eV) than pristine 1 (6.61 eV). Further, the energy gap can be tuned by changing the number of benzene rings of these diimides. Remarkably, these proposed complexes possess considerable first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) (4865-6921 a.u.), and the regularity of the β0 values remained the same in the gas phase and toluene solvent conditions. There is an inverse relationship between the energy gap and the polarizability/first hyperpolarizability. In addition, absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals, and hole electron distributions were obtained using time-dependent density functional theory calculations to emphasize the relationship between structure and properties. Ultraviolet-Visible absorption spectra reveals that all complexes show satisfying IR working regions. Further analysis of the first hyperpolarizability density reveals the nature of the excellent NLO properties of the studied systems. This study can provide valuable insights for the development of potential high-performance NLO molecules.

Axially Arylene-bridged "Dumbbell" BIII-Subporphyrin Dimers and A Tetrameric Subporphyrin Nanocage

Axially B-arylene-bridged "dumbbell" B III -subporphyrin (abbreviated as subporphyrin in this paper) dimers 3 , 4 , and 5 were prepared by reactions of B-methoxy subporphyrins with bromoaryl Grignard reagents and subsequent reductive coupling of the resulting B-bromoaryl subporphyrins with Ni(cod) 2 . This reductive coupling method was also used for synthesis of tetrameric subporphyrin nanocage 8 from meso-meso linked subporphyrin dimer 7 . Nanocage 8 displayed a red-shifted Q-like band and reduced fluorescence quantum yield as compared with 6 and 7 .

Periphery-Fused Chiral A2B-Type Subporphyrin

Despite significant interest, the chiroptical properties of subporphyrins have rarely been investigated because chiral subporphyrins are elusive. Here, inherently chiral subporphyrins are elaborated by forming a fused pyran ring at the periphery of an A₂B-type meso-aryl-substituted subporphyrin. Their circular dichroism (CD) properties are largely affected by the peripheral substituents and the dihedral angles between the meso-aryl substituents and the subporphyrin core: the β-perbromo subporphyrin with an orthogonal arrangement of the meso-phenyl substituents to the subporphyrin core exhibits weak CD signals corresponding to the Q bands, whereas the unsubstituted species with smaller dihedral angles shows relatively intense CD signals. A detailed structure–property relationship of these chiral subporphyrins was elucidated by time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations. This study reveals that the CD properties of chiral subporphyrins can be controlled by peripheral substitution and meso-aryl substituents.

Acetylene and trans-Ethylene Bridged BIII -Subporphyrin Dimers

Acetylene and trans-ethylene bridged B^III -subporphyrin dimers were synthesized by cross-coupling reactions of meso-bromo B^III subporphyrin. These dimers display perturbed and red-shifted absorption spectra reaching around 750 nm and fluorescence reaching at around 850 nm with high quantum yields of 0.39 and 0.47, respectively. DFT calculations have revealed that the HOMOs and the LUMOs of both dimers are spread over the two subporphyrin units as an indication of effective conjugation between the two subporphyrin units. The large Stokes shifts and characteristic pico-second time-resolved transient absorption spectra indicated that the S₁ -states of the dimers relax with structural changes, which are larger for the trans-ethylene bridged dimer.

Diarylamine-Fused Subporphyrins: Proof of Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer (TICT) Mechanism

Diarylamine-fused subporphyrins 1 a and 1 b were synthesized from β,β-diiodo-meso-chloro subporphyrin 2 through a one-pot procedure involving nucleophilic aromatic substitution and S_RN 1-type intramolecular fusion reaction as the first example of meso-nitrogen-embedded subporphyrin. While non-fused counterparts 3 b and 4 b display effective fluorescence quenching due to twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) in CH₂ Cl₂ at room temperature, 1 b emits fluorescence with Φ_F =0.18 under the same conditions, because conformational twisting is not allowed due to the fused structure. In addition, the oxidative titration with tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate gave cation radical 7 for 1 a and cation radical and dication for 1 b. Actually, cation radical 7 was isolated through separation over silica gel column but was found to slowly decompose in concentrated solutions.

Synthesis of Boron(III)-Coordinated Subchlorophins and Their Peripheral Modifications

A pyrrole-cleaving modification to transform boron(III) meso-triphenylsubporphyrin into boron(III) meso-triphenylsubchlorophin has been developed. Boron(III) subchlorophins thus synthesized show absorption and fluorescence spectra that are roughly similar to those of boron(III) subchlorins, but B-methoxy boron(III) subchlorophin showed considerably intensified fluorescence and a small Stokes shift. Peripheral modification reactions of B-phenyl boron(III) subchlorophin such as regioselective nitration with Cu(NO₃ )₂ ⋅3 H₂ O, ipso-substitution reactions of boron(III) α-nitrosubchlorophin with CsF and CsCl, and Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of boron(III) α-chlorosubchlorophin with arylacetylenes, have been also explored to tune the optical properties of subchlorophins.

meso-Nitro- and meso-Aminosubporphyrinatoboron(III)s and meso-to-meso Azosubporphyrinatoboron(III)s

meso-Nitrosubporphyrinatoboron(III) was synthesized by nitration of meso-free subporphyrin with AgNO₂ /I₂ . The subsequent reduction with a combination of NaBH₄ and Pd/C gave meso-aminosubporphyrinatoboron(III). meso-Nitro- and meso-amino-groups significantly influenced the electronic properties of subporphyrin, which has been confirmed by NMR and UV/Vis spectra, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations. Oxidation of meso-aminosubporphyrinatoboron(III)s with PbO₂ cleanly gave meso-to-meso azosubporphyrinatoboron(III)s that exhibited almost coplanar conformations and large electronic interaction through the azo-bridge.

Photophysical Properties and Adsorption Behaviors of Novel Tri-Cationic Boron(III) Subporphyrin on Anionic Clay Surface

Two types of +3-charged subporphyrin derivatives with m- and p-methylpyridinium as the meso-aryl substituents were designed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties with and without anionic saponite clay were investigated. These cationic subporphyrins were suitably designed for adsorption on the saponite nanosheet surface with their photoactivity. Absorption and emission spectra of these subporphyrin-saponite complexes exhibited strong bathochromic shifts due to the flattening of the molecules on the nanosheet. This behavior was observed as drastic visual changes in their luminescence colors. Additionally, aggregation behaviors were not observed in the saponite complexes even at high dye loading levels for both subporphyrins. Moreover, under such condition, their fluorescence properties on the saponite surface were not only maintained but also enhanced without unexpected deactivations despite the dye molecules are densely introduced on the solid surface. These findings are beneficial for applications of the dye-clay complexes to photofunctional materials such as strongly luminescent materials, highly sensitive clay sensors and artificial photosynthesis systems.

Probing the rotational dynamics of meso-(2-substituted)aryl substituents in A2B-type subporphyrins

A2 B-type B-methoxy subporphyrins 3 a-g and B-phenyl subporphyrins 7 a-c,e,g bearing meso-(2-substituted)aryl substituents are synthesized, and their rotational dynamics are examined through variable-temperature (VT) (1) H NMR spectroscopy. In these subporphyrins, the rotation of meso-aryl substituents is hindered by a rationally installed 2-substituent. The rotational barriers determined are considerably smaller than those reported previously for porphyrins. Comparison of the rotation activation parameters reveals a variable contribution of ΔH(≠) and ΔS(≠) in ΔG(≠). 2-Methyl and 2-ethyl groups of the meso-aryl substituents in subporphyrins 3 e, 3 f, and 7 e induce larger rotational barriers than 2-alkoxyl substituents. The rotational barriers of 3 g and 7 g are reduced by the presence of the 4-dibenzylamino group owing to its ability to stabilize the coplanar rotation transition state electronically. The smaller rotational barriers found for B-phenyl subporphyrins than for B-methoxy subporphyrins indicate a negligible contribution of SN 1-type heterolysis in the rotation of meso-aryl substituents.
