Synthesis, characterization, and DFT studies of thione and selone Cu(I) complexes with variable coordination geometries

Modular Synthesis of Azines Bearing a Guanidine Core from N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC)-Derived Selenoureas and Diazo Reagents

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-derived selenoureas comprise a fundamentally important class of NHC derivatives, with key applications in coordination chemistry and the determination of NHC electronic properties. Considering the broad reactivity of chalcogen-containing compounds, it is surprising to note that the use of NHC-derived selenoureas as organic synthons remains essentially unexplored. The present contribution introduces a novel, straightforward transformation leading to azines bearing a guanidine moiety, through the reaction of a wide range of NHC-derived selenoureas with commercially available diazo compounds, in the presence of triphenylphosphine. This transformation offers a new approach to such products, having biological, materials chemistry, and organic synthesis applications. The guanidine-bearing azines are obtained in excellent yields, with all manipulations taking place in air. A reaction mechanism is proposed, based on both experimental mechanistic findings and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A one-pot, multicomponent transesterification reaction between selenoureas, α-diazoesters, alcohols, and triphenylphosphine was also developed, providing highly functionalized azines.

Organo Chalcogenone-Triggered Luminescent Copper(I) Clusters for Light Emitting Applications

A novel organo sulfur and selenium-controlled emission behavior in discrete copper(I) clusters has been demonstrated for the first time. The pentanuclear [Cu5Br5(L1)2] (1), trinuclear [Cu3Br3(L2)2] (2), dinuclear [Cu2I2(L1)2] (3), and tetranuclear [Cu4I4(L2)2CH3CN] (4) copper(I) discrete clusters have been synthesized from the reaction between L1 [L1 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-thione] or L2 [L2 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-selone] chelating ligands and corresponding copper(I) halide salts. These new clusters have been characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, thermogravimetric analysis, and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 consists of abundant d10-d10 interactions. The structural and bonding features of clusters have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. Notably, the L2-ligated 2 and 4 are poorly emissive, while L1-ligated 1 and 3 showed strong emission in the orange and green regions, respectively. The time-dependent density functional theory natural transition orbital calculations of 1 and 3 reveal the nature of the transitions contributed by 3MLCT/3LLCT/3ILCT. Photoluminescence quantum yields of 1 and 3 are 19 and 11%, with average lifetimes of 21.55 and 6.57 μs, respectively. 1 and 3 were coated on prototype LED bulbs for light-emitting performance.

DNA recognition site of anticancer tinidazole copper(II) complexes

This paper describes the recognition process of tetrahedral [Cu^II(tnz)₂X₂] (X = Cl, Br) complexes by a DNA chain, analyzing the specific interaction between the DNA bases and backbone with the metal and the tinidazole (tnz) ligand. We identified the coordination of the copper metal center with one or two phosphates as the first recognition site for the tinidazole copper(II) complexes, while the ligands present partial intercalation into the minor groove. Also, we discuss a novel trigonal copper(I) tnz bromide complex, obtained by reducing the previously reported [Cu(tnz)₂Br₂]. This complex sheds light on the mechanism of action of tnz metal complexes as one of the most stable DNA-complex adducts depicts a trigonal geometry around the copper ion.

Highly bioactive novel aryl-, benzyl-, and piperazine-selenoureas: synthesis, structural characterization and in vitro biological evaluation

Selenoureas are widespread as useful elements for constructing important species and biologically active molecules. Finding an efficient and straightforward method to prepare this motif and biologically screen derivatives thereof is crucial. Herein, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using ethanol as a solvent in the preparation of various substituted aryl-, benzyl-, and piperazine-selenoureas from isoselenocyanates and amines. The synthetic method includes mild reaction conditions, large substrate scope, and good isolated yields. Biological evaluation of the prepared products on MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines revealed several remarkably active compounds (IC₅₀ < 10 μΜ) with the best one exhibiting IC₅₀ values of 1.8 μΜ and 1.2 μΜ observed against the challenging former triple-negative breast cancer cell line and the latter one, respectively. The chemical structures of all new compounds were fully characterized by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high accuracy mass measurements.

Antimony(III) Halide-Assisted Stereospecific Coordination of Thione

The antimony halide-aided stereospecific coordination of a cyclic thiourea-type of ligand is observed for the first time. The antimony(III) imidazole thione complexes syn-[(L¹ )SbCl₃ ] (syn-1) and anti-[(L¹ )SbBr₃ ] (anti-2) have been synthesized in very good yield by the reaction between the spatially defined steric impact ligand [(IPaul)S] (L¹ ) ([(IPaul)S]=1,3-bis(2,4-methyl-6-diphenyl phenyl)imidazole thione) and corresponding antimony halide. The stereoselective formation of complexes syn-1 and anti-2 has been confirmed by both NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Interestingly the stereospecific nature of syn-1 and anti-2 remains intact in solution. Furthermore, the thermal stability of antimony(III) imidazole thione complexes were examined by TGA analysis.

Rare antimony(III) imidazole selone complexes: steric controlled structural and bonding aspects

Novel antimony(iii) imidazole selone complexes in a super crowded environment are reported for the first time. The super bulky selone antimony complexes, [{IPr*Se}(SbCl3)2] (1) and [{IPr*Se}(SbBr3)2] (2), were isolated from the reactions between IPr*Se (IPr*Se = [1,3-bis(2,6-diphenylmethylphenyl)imidazole selone]) and suitable antimony(iii) halides. 1 and 2 are dinuclear complexes with a Sb : Se ratio of 1 : 0.5 with an unusual coordination mode of selone. The molecules 1 and 2 consist of both Menshutkin-type Sbπaryl interactions and a Sb-Se coordination bond. However, the reaction between antimony(iii) halides and [(IPaul)Se] ([(IPaul)Se] = [1,3-bis(2,4-methyl-6-diphenyl phenyl)imidazole selone]) with a spatially defined steric impact gave the dinuclear complex [{(IPaul)Se}(SbCl3)]2 (3) and the mononuclear complex [{(IPaul)Se}(SbBr3)] (4) without Menshutkin-type interactions. The Sb : Se ratio in 3 and 4 is 1 : 1. Interestingly, the Menshutkin-type interaction was absent in 3 and 4 due to the efficient coordinating ability of the ligand [(IPaul)Se] with the Sb(iii) center compared to that of the super bulky ligand IPr*Se. The thermal property of these antimony selone complexes was also investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on the model systems [L(SbCl3)2] (1A), [L(SbCl3)] (1B), [L'(SbCl3)2] (1C), and [L'(SbCl3)] (1D), where L = [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-4-methyl phenyl)imidazole selone] and L' = [1,3-bis(phenyl)imidazole selone], to understand the nature of orbitals and bonding situations. The computed metrical parameters of 1A are in good agreement with the experimental values. Natural population analysis of the model system reveals that the natural charge and total population of antimony(iii) are comparable. The unequal interaction between selenium and antimony obtained using Wiberg bond indices (WBIs) is fully consistent with the findings of the single-crystal X-ray studies.

Synthesis and dye adsorption studies of the {dibromo(1,1′-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(3-methyl-imidazole-2-thione)dicopper(i)}n polymer and its conversion to CuO nanospheres for photocatalytic and antibacterial applications

A new copper polymer was used as a dye adsorbent and CuO precursor. The CuO nanospheres showed good performances for photocatalytic and antibacterial applications.

Unexpected reactions of NHC*-CuI and -AgI bromides with potassium thio- or seleno-cyanate

The reactions of N-heterocyclic carbene CuI and AgI halides with potassium thio- or seleno-cyanate gave unexpected products. The attempted substitution reaction of bromido-(1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-di-phenyl-imidazol-2-yl-idene)silver (NHC*-Ag-Br) with KSCN yielded bis-[bis-(1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-di-phenyl-imidazol-2-yl-idene)silver(I)] tris-(thio-cyanato)-argentate(I) diethyl ether disolvate, [Ag(C29H24N2)2][Ag(NCS)3]·2C4H10O or [NHC*2Ag]2[Ag(SCN)3]·2Et2O, (1), while reaction with KSeCN led to bis-(μ-1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-diphenyl-2-seleno-imidazole-κ2 Se:Se)bis-[bromido-(1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-diphenyl-2-seleno-imid-azole-κSe)silver(I)] di-chloro-methane hexa-solvate, [Ag2Br2(C29H24N2Se)4]·6CH2Cl2 or (NHC*Se)4Ag2Br2·6CH2Cl2, (2), via oxidation of the NHC* fragment to 2-seleno-imidazole. This oxidation was observed again in the reaction of NHC*-Cu-Br with KSeCN, yielding catena-poly[[[(1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-diphenyl-2-seleno-imidazole-κSe)copper(I)]-μ-cyanido-κ2 C:N] aceto-nitrile monosolvate], {[Cu(CN)(C29H24N2Se)]·C2H3N} n or NHC*Se-CuCN·CH3CN, (3). Compound (1) represents an organic/inorganic salt with AgI in a linear coordination in each of the two cations and in a trigonal coordination in the anion, accompanied by diethyl ether solvent mol-ecules. The tri-blade boomerang-shaped complex anion [Ag(SCN)3]2- present in (1) is characterized by X-ray diffraction for the first time. Compound (2) comprises an isolated centrosymmetric mol-ecule with AgI in a distorted tetra-hedral BrSe3 coordination, together with di-chloro-methane solvent mol-ecules. Compound (3) exhibits a linear polymeric 1 ∞[Cu-C≡N-Cu-] chain structure with a seleno-imidazole moiety additionally coordinating to each CuI atom, and completed by aceto-nitrile solvent mol-ecules. Electron densities associated with an additional ether solvent mol-ecule in (1) and two additional di-chloro-methane solvent mol-ecules in (2) were removed with the SQUEEZE procedure [Spek (2015 ▸). Coordination of 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone to zinc and cadmium: Monotonic and non-monotonic bond length variations for [H(sebenzimMe)]2MCl2 complexes (M = Zn, Cd, Hg)

The reactions of 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone, H(sebenzimMe), towards the zinc and cadmium halides, MX2 (M = Zn, Cd; X = Cl, Br, I), afford the adducts, [H(sebenzimMe)]2MX2, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The halide ligands of each of these complexes participate in hydrogen bonding interactions with the imidazole N-H moieties, although the nature of the interactions depends on the halide. Specifically, the chloride and bromide derivatives, [H(sebenzimMe)]2ZnX2 and [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdX2 (X = Cl, Br), exhibit two intramolecular N-H•••X interactions, whereas the iodide derivatives, [H(sebenzimMe)]2ZnI2 and [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdI2, exhibit only one intramolecular N-H•••I interaction. Comparison of the M-Se and M-Cl bond lengths of the chloride series, [H(sebenzimMe)]2MCl2 (M = Zn, Cd, Hg), indicates that while the average M-Cl bond lengths progressively increase as the metal becomes heavier, the variation in M-Se bond length exhibits a non-monotonic trend, with the Cd-Se bond being the longest. These different trends provide an interesting subtlety concerned with use of covalent radii in predicting bond length differences. In addition to tetrahedral [H(sebenzimMe)]2CdCl2, [H(sebenzimMe)]3,CdCl2•[H(sebenzim)Me]4CdCl2, which features both five-coordinate and six-coordinate coordinate centers, has also been structurally characterized. Finally, the reaction between CdI2 and H(sebenzimMe) at elevated temperatures affords the 1-methylbenzimidazole complex, [H(sebenzimMe)]-[H(benzimMe)]CdI2, a transformation that is associated with cleavage of the C-Se bond.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

A Computational Investigation of the Binding of the Selenium Analogues of Ergothioneine and Ovothiol to Cu(I) and Cu(II) and the Effect of Binding on the Redox Potential of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) Redox Couple

The complexes formed from the binding of ovoselenol (OSeH) and ergoseloneine (ESeH) to Cu(II) and Cu(I) have been investigated with DFT methods. From the calculated thermodynamics, the binding of OSeH and ESeH to Cu(II) and Cu(I) ions increases the reduction potential for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The calculated reduction potentials for the Cu(II)(OSe)2/Cu(I)(OSeH)3+ and Cu(II)(ESe)2/Cu(I)(ESeH)3+ redox couples were found to be 1.15 V and 1.24 V in a dilute aqueous solution. By combining the half reactions for the oxidation of OSeH to the diselenide OSeSeO with the reduction of Cu(II)(OSe)2 to Cu(I)(OSeH)3+, the calculated EMF was 0.90 V. For the oxidation of ESeH to the diselenide ESeSeE with the concomitant reduction of Cu(II)(ESe)2 to Cu(I)(ESeH)3+, the calculated EMF was 0.67 V. Thus, for both systems, the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) with concomitant formation of either diselenide is thermodynamically favourable, and it is expected that both OSeH and ESeH are suitable for the protection against copper induced oxidative damage. As a result, the inhibition of the recycling of Cu(I) to Cu(II) is thermodynamically favourable in the presence of OSeH and ESeH.

Cytoprotective effects of imidazole-based [S1] and [S2]-donor ligands against mercury toxicity: a bioinorganic approach

Here we report the coordination behaviour of an imidazole-based [S1]-donor ligand, 1,3-dimethyl-imidazole-2(3H)-thione (L1), and [S2]-donor ligand, 3,3'-methylenebis(1-methyl-imidazole-2(3H)-thione) (L2) or 4,4'-(3,3'-methylenebis-(2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-imidazole-3,1-diyl))dibutanoic acid (L3), with HgX2 (X = Cl, Br or I) in solution and the solid state. NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray studies demonstrated that L1 or L2 coordinated rapidly and reversibly to the mercury center of HgX2 through the thione moiety. Treatment of L2 with HgCl2 or HgBr2 afforded 16-membered metallacycle k1-(L2)2Hg2Cl4 or k1-(L2)2Hg2Br4 where two Cl or Br atoms are located inside the ring. In contrast, treatment of L2 with HgI2 afforded a chain-like structure of k1-[L2Hgl2]n, possibly due to the large size of the iodine atom. Interestingly, [S1] and [S2]-donor ligands (L1, L2, and L3) showed an excellent efficacy to protect liver cells against HgCl2 induced toxicity and the strength of their efficacy is in the order of L3 > L2 > L1. 30% decrease of ROS production was observed when liver cells were co-treated with HgCl2 and L1 in comparison to those cells treated with HgCl2 only. In contrast, 45% and 60% decrease of ROS production was observed in the case of cells co-treated with HgCl2 and thiones L2 and L3, respectively, indicating that [S2]-donor ligands L2 and L3 have better cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress induced by HgCl2 than [S1]-donor ligand L1. Water-soluble ligand L3 with N-(CH2)3CO2H substituents showed a better cytoprotective effect against HgCl2 toxicity than L2 in liver cells.

Synthesis and coordination chemistry of cyclic seleno- and telluroureas

Chalcogenated derivatives of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have received increasing attention due to their diverse chemical reactivity and potential applications in fields such as medicine and materials chemistry. This chapter summarizes the synthetic methods for the preparation of cyclic heavy chalcogenoureas featuring heterocyclic cores and explores their diverse coordination chemistry with p- and d-block metals.

Role of C, S, Se and P donor ligands in copper(i) mediated C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions

The first comparative study of C, S, Se and P donor ligands-supported copper(i) complexes for C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions are described. The syntheses and characterization of eight mononuclear copper(i) chalcogenone complexes, two polynuclear copper(i) chalcogenone complexes and one tetranuclear copper(i) phosphine complex are reported. All these new complexes were characterized by CHN analysis, FT-IR, UV-vis, multinuclear NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The single crystal X-ray structures of these complexes depict the existence of a wide range of coordination environments for the copper(i) center. This is the first comparative study of metal–phosphine, metal–NHC and metal–imidazolin-2-chalcogenones in C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions. Among all the catalysts, mononuclear copper(i) thione, mononuclear copper(i) N-heterocyclic carbene and tetranuclear copper(i) phosphine are exceedingly active towards the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles as well as for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling of alkynes with silanes. The cross-dehydrogenative coupling of terminal alkynes with silanes represents the first report of a catalytic process mediated by metal–imidazolin-2-chalcogenones.

Chalcogen Bonding Macrocycles and [2]Rotaxanes for Anion Recognition

Electron-deficient heavy chalcogen atoms contain Lewis acidic σ-holes which are able to form attractive supramolecular interactions, known as chalcogen bonding (ChB), with Lewis bases. However, their potential in solution-phase anion binding applications is only just beginning to be realized in simple acyclic systems. Herein, we explore the 5-(methylchalcogeno)-1,2,3-triazole (chalcogen = Se, Te) motif as a novel ChB donor for anion binding. Other than being chemically robust enough to be incorporated into macrocyclic structures, thereby significantly expanding the scope and complexity of ChB host systems, we also demonstrate, by ¹H NMR and DFT calculations, that the chalcogen atoms oriented within the macrocycle cavity are able to chelate copper(I) endotopically. Exploiting this property, the first examples of mechanically interlocked [2]rotaxanes containing ChB-donor groups are prepared via an active metal template strategy. Solution-phase ¹H NMR and molecular modeling studies provide compelling evidence for the dominant influence of ChB in anion binding by these interlocked host systems. In addition, unprecedented charge-assisted ChB-mediated anion binding was also studied in aqueous solvent mixtures, which revealed considerable differences in anion recognition behavior in comparison with chalcogen-free host analogues. Moreover, DFT calculations and molecular dynamics simulations in aqueous solvent mixtures indicate that the selectivity is determined by the different hydrophilic characters of the anions allied to the hydration of the binding units in the presence of the anions. Exploiting the NMR-active nuclei of the ChB-donor chalcogen atoms, heteronuclear ⁷⁷Se and ¹²⁵Te NMR were used to directly study how anion recognition influences the local electronic environment of the chalcogen atoms in the mechanically bonded rotaxane binding sites in organic and aqueous solvent mixtures.

Protolytic cleavage of Hg-C bonds induced by 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone: synthesis and structural characterization of mercury complexes

Multinuclear ((1)H, (77)Se, and (199)Hg) NMR spectroscopy demonstrates that 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazole-2-selone, H(sebenzim(Me)), a structural analogue of the selenoamino acid, selenoneine, binds rapidly and reversibly to the mercury centers of HgX2 (X = Cl, Br, I), while X-ray diffraction studies provide evidence for the existence of adducts of composition [H(sebenzim(Me))]xHgX2 (X = Cl, x = 2, 3, 4; X = I, x = 2) in the solid state. H(sebenzim(Me)) also reacts with methylmercury halides, but the reaction is accompanied by elimination of methane resulting from protolytic cleavage of the Hg-C bond, an observation that is of relevance to the report that selenoneine demethylates CysHgMe, thereby providing a mechanism for mercury detoxification. Interestingly, the structures of [H(sebenzim(Me))]xHgX2 exhibit a variety of different hydrogen bonding patterns resulting from the ability of the N-H groups to form hydrogen bonds with chlorine, iodine, and selenium.

Sulfur and selenium antioxidants: challenging radical scavenging mechanisms and developing structure-activity relationships based on metal binding

Because sulfur and selenium antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage, numerous animal and clinical trials have investigated the ability of these compounds to prevent the oxidative stress that is an underlying cause of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer, among others. One of the most common sources of oxidative damage is metal-generated hydroxyl radical; however, very little research has focused on determining the metal-binding abilities and structural attributes that affect oxidative damage prevention by sulfur and selenium compounds. In this review, we describe our ongoing investigations into sulfur and selenium antioxidant prevention of iron- and copper-mediated oxidative DNA damage. We determined that many sulfur and selenium compounds inhibit Cu(I)-mediated DNA damage and that DNA damage prevention varies dramatically when Fe(II) is used in place of Cu(I) to generate hydroxyl radical. Oxidation potentials of the sulfur or selenium compounds do not correlate with their ability to prevent DNA damage, highlighting the importance of metal coordination rather than reactive oxygen species scavenging as an antioxidant mechanism. Additional gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and UV-visible studies confirmed sulfur and selenium antioxidant binding to Cu(I) and Fe(II). Ultimately, our studies established that both the hydroxyl-radical-generating metal ion and the chemical environment of the sulfur or selenium significantly affect DNA damage prevention and that metal coordination is an essential mechanism for these antioxidants.

Crystal structure of bis-[1,3,4,5-tetra-methyl-1H-imidazole-2(3H)-thione-κS]chlorido-copper(I)

The mol­ecular structure of the title compound, [CuCl(C₇H₁₂N₂S)₂], shows a slightly distorted trigonal–planar coordination geometry of the Cu atom. The Cu—Cl bond measures 2.2287 (9) Å, and the two Cu—S bonds are significantly different from each other, with values of 2.2270 (10) and 2.2662 (10) Å. Also, the S—Cu—Cl angles differ, with values of 113.80 (4) and 124.42 (4)°, while the S—Cu—S angle is 121.51 (4)°. The two imidazole rings are almost parallel, making a dihedral angle of 2.1 (2)°. In the crystal, the shortest C—H⋯Cl interactions stabilize a three-dimensional network with molecules linked into centrosymmetric dimers that are stacked along the b-axis direction.

Interactions of Cu(I) with selenium-containing amino acids determined by NMR, XAS, and DFT studies

Cu(I) coordination by organoselenium compounds was recently reported as a mechanism for their prevention of copper-mediated DNA damage. To establish whether direct Se-Cu coordination may be involved in selenium antioxidant activity, Cu(I) coordination of the selenoamino acids methyl-Se-cysteine (MeSeCys) and selenomethionine (SeMet) was investigated. NMR results in D(2)O indicate that Cu(I) binds to the Se atom of both MeSeCys and SeMet as well as the carboxylic acid oxygen atom(s) or amine nitrogen atoms. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) results confirm Se-Cu coordination, with the identification of a 2.4 Å Se-Cu vector in both the Se- and Cu-EXAFS data. XAS studies also show Cu(I) in an unusual three-coordinate environment with the additional two ligands arising from O/N (2.0 Å). DFT models of 1:1 Cu-selenoamino acid complexes suggest that both selenoamino acids coordinate Cu(I) through the selenium and amino groups, with the third ligand assumed to be water. These compounds represent the first structurally characterized copper(I) complexes with sulfur- or selenium-containing amino acids.
