Non-Substituted Imidazolium-Based Electrolytes as Potential Alternatives to the Conventional Acidic Electrolytes of Polyaniline-Based Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Although disubstituted imidazolium cation is sterically crowded, hundreds of ionic liquids based on this cation have been reported as electrolytes for energy storage devices. In contrast to disubstituted imidazolium, non-substituted imidazolium is uncrowded sterically and has not yet been investigated as an electrolyte, to the best of our knowledge. Hence, imidazolium hydrogen sulfate [Imi][HSO4], in mixture with water, was studied as an electrolyte for PANI-based electrode materials. For comparison, pyrrolidinium with hydrogen sulfate or p-toluene sulfonate ([Pyrr][HSO4] or [Pyrr][PTS]), in mixture with water, were also investigated as alternatives to the conventional electrolyte (i.e., aqueous H2SO4) for PANI electrodes. Walden plots of binary mixture ionic liquid-water weight ratios with the optimal ionic conductivity (i.e., [Imi][HSO4]/water 48/52 wt% (195.1 mS/cm), [Pyrr][HSO4]/water 41/59 wt% (186.6 mS/cm), and [Pyrr][PTS]/water 48/52 wt% (43.4 mS/cm) along with the electrochemical performances of PANI in these binary mixtures showed that [Pyrr][HSO4]aq or [Imi][HSO4]aq are convenient electrolytes for PANI/PIL, as opposed to [Pyrr][PTS]aq. Furthermore, replacing the conventional aqueous electrolyte H2SO4 with [Imi][HSO4] aq increased the specific capacitance of PANI/PIL from 249.8 to 268.5 F/g at 15 mV/s. Moreover, PANI/PIL electrodes displayed a quasi-ideal capacitive behavior in [Imi][HSO4]aq (the correction factor of CPE4 was 0.99). This primary study has shown that non-substituted imidazolium as an electrolyte could enhance the electrochemical performances of PANI electrodes and could be a good alternative to the conventional electrolyte.

Influence of Metal Salts Addition on Physical and Electrochemical Properties of Ethyl and Propylammonium Nitrate

In this work, we deepen in the characterization of two protic ionic liquids (PILs), ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and propylammonium nitrate (PAN). With this aim, we determined the influence of inorganic nitrate salts addition on their physical properties and their electrochemical potential window (EPW). Thus, experimental measurements of electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, refractive index and surface tension of mixtures of {EAN or PAN + LiNO₃, Ca(NO₃)₂, Mg(NO₃)₂ or Al(NO₃)₃} at a temperature range between 5 and 95 °C are presented first, except for the last two properties which were measured at 25 °C. In the second part, the corresponding EPWs were determined at 25 °C by linear sweep voltammetry using three different electrochemical cells. Effect of the salt addition was associated mainly with the metal cation characteristics, so, generally, LiNO₃ showed the lower influence, followed by Ca(NO₃)₂, Mg(NO₃)₂ or Al(NO₃)₃. The results obtained for the EAN + LiNO₃ mixtures, along with those from a previous work, allowed us to develop novel predictive equations for most of the presented physical properties as functions of the lithium salt concentration, the temperature and the water content. Electrochemical results showed that a general order of EPW can be established for both PILs, although exceptions related to measurement conditions and the properties of the mixtures were found.

Electropolymerization of EDOT in an anionic surfactant-stabilized hydrophobic ionic liquid-based microemulsion

Here, an anionic surfactant [AOT]^- (bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate)-stabilized H₂O/[Omim][PF₆] (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) microemulsion has been tested for the first time as a medium for the electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT). To formulate AOT-stabilized [Omim][PF₆]-based microemulsions of different water contents, the phase triangle was determined at 35 °C. Measurements of the conductivities of the microemulsions, their solubilization capacities toward EDOT and their catalytic effects on EDOT electrooxidation show that the present [AOT]^--stabilized ionic liquid microemulsion is a good medium for EDOT electropolymerization. Studies on the process of the electropolymerization of EDOT in this [Omim][PF₆]-based microemulsion indicate that the water content (i.e., microstructure) of the microemulsion medium is an important factor affecting the onset potential and the deposition rate of the PEDOT. The morphology and the doping level of the as-prepared PEDOT are also found to be correlated with the water content of the ionic liquid microemulsion. The microemulsion with higher water content results in a PEDOT with better electroactivity and higher doping levels. FTIR spectra and XPS analysis show that the PEDOT electrosynthesized in the microemulsion is co-doped by both [AOT]^- and [PF₆]^-. Compared with the neat [Omim][PF₆], the use of the ionic liquid microemulsions can reduce not only the consumption of the expensive ionic liquid, but also the onset potential for the electrooxidation of EDOT. Moreover, by tuning the water content of the medium, the electropolymerization of PEDOT and its electrochemical properties could be regulated accordingly. Under the identical deposited charge, the PEDOT originated from the high water content microemulsion (50% H₂O μE) has a higher specific capacitance (124 F g^-1) than that from neat [Omim][PF₆] (117 F g^-1). It follows that the present ionic liquid microemulsion is a good medium for EDOT electropolymerization. The present study opens up a new route for the green and low-cost electrochemical preparation of high-performance PEDOT.

Highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction on carbonized porous conducting polymers

A rational design of an efficient and inexpensive electrocatalyst for water splitting still remains a challenge. Porous conducting polymers are attractive materials which not only provide a high surface area for electrocatalysis but also absorb light which can be harnessed in photoelectrocatalysis. Here, a novel and inexpensive electrochemical approach is developed to obtain nanoporous conducting copolymers with tunable light absorbance and porosity. By fine-tuning the copolymer composition and upon heat treatment, an excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was achieved in alkaline solution with an overpotential of just 77 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Such an overpotential is remarkably low compared with other reported values for polymers in an alkaline medium. The nanoporous copolymer developed here shows a great promise of using metal-free electrocatalysts and brings about new avenues for exploitation of these porous conducting polymers.

Electropolymerisation of N-Ethylanilinium Trifluoroacetate Ionic Liquid into Poly(N-Ethylaniline) and Control of its Morphology

In this paper, the electropolymerisation of pre-synthesised N-ethylanilinium trifluoroacetate, a protic ionic liquid (PIL), was carried out. The PIL served as the monomer precursor, solvent, and supporting electrolyte for the polymerisation process, and no additional acid was required due to the protic nature of the PIL. Two different morphologies of the poly(N-ethylaniline) were achieved by using different electropolymerisation approaches and the resultant films were soluble in the PIL precursor as well as a wide range of organic solvents. The use of anilinium based PILs, as polymerisation precursors, promises a greener approach for the production of polyanilines, as well as highly processable polymers.

Electrochemical Tailoring of Fibrous Polyaniline and Electroless Decoration with Gold and Platinum Nanoparticles

Presented in this work is a facile and quick electrochemical method for controlling the morphology of thick polyaniline (PANi) films, without the use of templates. By stepping the polymerization potential from high voltages to a lower (or series of lower) voltage(s), we successfully controlled the morphology of the polymer, and fibrous structures, unique to each potential step, were achieved. In addition, the resultant film was tested electrochemically for its viability as an electrode material for flexible batteries and supercapacitors. Furthermore, the PANi film was decorated with gold and platinum nanoparticles via an electroless deposition process for possible electrocatalytic applications, whereby the oxidation of hydrazine at the composite was investigated.

Electrodeposition in Ionic Liquids

Due to their attractive physico-chemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) are increasingly used as deposition electrolytes. This review summarizes recent advances in electrodeposition in ILs and focuses on its similarities and differences with that in aqueous solutions. The electrodeposition in ILs is divided into direct and template-assisted deposition. We detail the direct deposition of metals, alloys and semiconductors in five types of ILs, including halometallate ILs, air- and water-stable ILs, deep eutectic solvents (DESs), ILs with metal-containing cations, and protic ILs. Template-assisted deposition of nanostructures and macroporous structures in ILs is also presented. The effects of modulating factors such as deposition conditions (current density, current density mode, deposition time, temperature) and electrolyte components (cation, anion, metal salts, additives, water content) on the morphology, compositions, microstructures and properties of the prepared materials are highlighted.

High-throughput approach for the identification of anilinium-based ionic liquids that are suitable for electropolymerisation

We report the synthesis of new protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on aniline derivatives and the use of high-throughput (HT) techniques to screen possible candidates. In this work, a simple HT method was applied to rapidly screen different aniline derivatives against different acids in order to identify possible combinations that produce PILs. This was followed by repeating the HT process with a Chemspeed robotic synthesis platform for more accurate results. One of the successful combinations were then chosen to be synthesised on a larger scale for further analysis. The new PILs are of interest to the fields of ionic liquids, energy storage and especially, conducting polymers as they serve as solvents, electrolytes and monomers at the same time for possible electropolymerisation (i.e. a self-contained polymer precursor).

Role of H+ in Polypyrrole and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Formation Using FeCl3·6H2O in the Room Temperature Ionic Liquid, C4mpyrTFSI

The polymerisation reaction of pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene using the chemical oxidant FeCl3·6H2O in the room temperature ionic liquid butyl-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (C4mpyrTFSI) has been investigated using cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis and IR spectroscopy. The voltammetric data for the Fe2+/3+ reaction is complicated by the presence of H+ introduced upon dissolution of the iron salt by deprotonation of the coordinated waters. The voltammetric and chemical reaction studies show that H+ itself, introduced to solution as trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HTFSI), can act as the chemical oxidant for the polymerisation reaction. Voltammetric data also implies that in this system the Fe2+/3+ redox couple may not actually be involved in the polymerisation reaction and that the H+ introduced upon dissolution of the FeCl3·6H2O may be the sole cause of the oxidation reaction.
