Abstract
Herein we report an efficient stereoselective umpolung 1,2-addition of Et2Zn onto α-diketones followed by intramolecular cascade Michael cyclization. This strategy effectively delivers a broad range of substituted 1-indanones in excellent yields in a chemo- and regioselective fashion. Additionally, we performed a variety of synthetic transformations on the 1-indanone products. Furthermore, a hitherto-unexplored asymmetric variant of this methodology that provides up to 94:6 er using an easily accessible cinchona alkaloid ligand has been addressed.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed tandem Stetter-aldol reaction of phthalaldehyde and α,β-unsaturated ketimines has been developed to afford functionalized naphthalen-1(2H)-one derivatives as the formal [4+2] annulation product. Interestingly, the reaction of aldimines led to the formation of isoquinoline derivatives instead of the expected indanone derivatives as a [4+1] annulation product.

Abstract
The synthetic potential of imines as electrophiles or as a source of nucleophilic coupling partner in N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis for the synthesis of various nitrogen heterocycles and functionalized amines is highlighted in this Feature Article. Electrophilic imines are suitable candidates for intercepting the NHC-derived acyl anions, homoenolate equivalents, and (di)enolates for the synthesis of α-amino ketones and a variety of lactam derivatives. Moreover, enamines generated from imines bearing α-hydrogen could be trapped with α,β-unsaturated acylazoliums for the synthesis of functionalized dihydropyridinones. NHCs are also useful for the umpolung of imines for the generation of aza-Breslow intermediates thus leading to the synthesis of indoles, quinolines, dihydroquinoxalines etc. A concise account of the diverse reactivity of imines in NHC catalysis has been presented.

Abstract
An In(OTf)3-catalyzed domino reaction involving sequential oxidative ring opening of aziridines by using the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide and intramolecular Michael addition has been developed for the modular synthesis of 2-aminoindanone compounds by the formation of one new C═O bond and one new C-C bond. The notable feature of this strategy includes broad substrate scope, excellent trans-diastereoselectivities, highly functionalized products, and mild conditions. The catalyst In(OTf)3 plays an important role in the formation of the indanone ring.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a powerful class of organocatalysts that mediate a variety of organic transformations. The Benzoin reaction constitutes one of the earliest known carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions catalysed by NHCs. The rapid growth of NHC catalysis in general has resulted in the development of a variety of benzoin and benzoin-type reactions. An overview of such NHC-catalysed benzoin reactions is presented.

Abstract
The NHC-catalyzed reactions of ortho electron-deficient vinyl substituted arylaldehydes with nitrosoarenes were studied. The reactions produced multifunctional 2,3-benzoxazin-4-ones in good to excellent yields via a cascade aza-benzoin reaction between aldehyde and nitroso groups followed by an intramolecular oxo-Michael addition. The resulting 1-acetate substituted 2,3-benzoxazinones were transformed into a new type of β-hydroxycarboxylate derivatives or 3-oxo-1-isobenzofuranacetates, respectively, under different reductive conditions. This work not only provides a simple and efficient method for the construction of multifunctional 2,3-benzoxazin-4-ones of potential pharmacological interest, but also expands the application of NHC-catalyzed cascade reactions in the formation of carbon-heteroatom and heteroatom-heteroatom bonds.
