Abstract
This paper reports synthesis and characterization of three new coumarin-fused NIR BODIPY dyes 16-18, as well as the detailed study of their optical response to exposure with X-rays (up to 1000 Gy) in solvents of various nature. A strong reaction to irradiation (both in terms of absorption and fluorescence changing) is found in chlorinated solvents (CCl4 and CHCl3) and acetonitrile, while no significant respond of the dyes is observed in toluene and propanol-1. Herewith, their responses turned out to be very versatile: a complex change in fluorescence (quenching of the main band accompanied by the flare-up in a new spectral region) is observed together with colorimetric reaction (e.g., the color of 17 changes from green to blue at 50-80 Gy, and then becomes pink closer to ≈350 Gy). In general, the dyes show good linearity in their response to irradiation up to ≈70-100 Gy and are quite sensitive. For example, the limit of detection (LOD) values for 18 are from 0.29 to 6.73. At the same time, the ratiometric fluorescent response of the compound 16 turns out to be linear over the entire range up to 1000 Gy (to date, this is the first BODIPY-based X-ray probe with optical response over such a wide dose range). Thus, the synthesized dyes seem to be promising for dosimetric support of radiation processing/sterilization procedures.

Abstract
The photophysical behavior of a β-blocker drug propranolol (PPL) in micellar environments, formed by alkyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants viz.; Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), has been investigated through fluorescence and UV-visible spectroscopic techniques at pH levels of 3.5, 7.4, and 10.4. The impact of pH on the critical micelle concentration (cmc) and micropolarity of micelles were assessed using pyrene as a photophysical probe. The cmc values were found to be lower at pH 10.4 compared to pH 7.4 and pH 3.5. Fluorescence emission intensities of PPL at 323 nm, 338 nm, and 352 nm were significantly influenced by pH, hydrophobic alkyl chain length of surfactants, and their concentrations. Quenching experiments with Cetylpyridinium chloride (CpCl) indicated the localization of charged and uncharged forms of PPL within micelles, with quenching constant (Ksv) values dependent on alkyl chain length and pH. At pH < pKa, PPL is positioned near the Stern layer, whereas at pH 10.4, its naphthalene moiety resides near the hydrophobic micellar core. UV spectroscopy showed that the charged form of PPL interacted with micelles only above cmc, while the neutral form interacted even below the cmc. Density Functional Theory (DFT) reveals the HOMO of the surfactants to be localized on the hydrocarbon chains, and the LUMO localized around the quaternary ammonium unit. Upon complexation with PPL, both HOMO and LUMO shifted to the drug, thereby decreasing energy levels. The findings are explained based on weak noncovalent interactions, further supported and analyzed through Reduced Density Gradient (RDG) and Noncovalent Interaction (NCI) methods, confirming synergistic non-covalent interactions in surfactant-PPL complexes.

Abstract
This research work is devoted to collecting a high-quality dataset of BODIPYs in a series of 10-30 solvents. In total, 115 individual compounds in 71 solvents are represented by 1698 arrays of the spectral and photophysical properties of the fluorophore. Each dye for a series of solvents is characterized by a calculated value of solvatochromic sensitivity according to a semiempirical approach applied to a series of solvents. The whole dataset is classified into 6 and 24 clusters of solvatochromic sensitivity, from high negative to high positive solvatochromism. The results of the analysis are visualized by the polarity mapping plots depicting, in terms of wavenumbers, the absorption versus emission, stokes shift versus - (absorption maxima + emission maxima), and quantum yield versus stokes shift. An analysis of the clusters combining several dyes in an individual series of solvents shows that dyes of a high solvatochromic sensitivity demonstrate regular behaviour of the corresponding plots suitable for polarity and viscosity mapping. The fluorophores collected in this study represent a high quality dataset of pattern dyes for analytical and bioanalytical applications. The developed tools could be applied for the analysis of the applicability domain of the fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
The lifetimes of electronic excited states have a strong influence on the efficiency of organic solar cells. However, in some molecular systems a given excited state lifetime is reduced due to the non-radiative decay through conical intersections. Several strategies may be used to suppress this decay channel. The use of the strong light-matter coupling provided in optical nano-cavities is the focus of this paper. Here, we consider the meso-tert-butyl-4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene molecule (meso-tert-butyl-BODIPY) as a showcase of how strong and ultrastrong coupling might help in the development of organic solar cells. The meso-tert-butyl-BODIPY is known for its low fluorescence yield caused by the non-radiative decay through a conical intersection. However, we show here that, by considering this system within a cavity, the strong coupling can lead to significant changes in the multidimensional landscape of the potential energy surfaces of meso-tert-butyl-BODIPY, suppressing almost completely the decay of the excited state wave packet back to the ground state. By means of multi configuration electronic structure calculations and nuclear wave packet dynamics, the coupling with the cavity is analyzed in-depth to provide further insight of the interaction. By fine-tuning the cavity field strength and resonance frequency, we show that one can change the nuclear dynamics in the excited state, and control the non-radiative decay. This may lead to a faster and more efficient population transfer or the suppression of it.

Abstract
In this work, we depict the synthesis and characterization of a series of meso-substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) compounds. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. All these compounds exhibited intense absorption bands in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible regions, which arise from the π-π* transitions based on their BODIPY core segments. By comparing electron-withdrawing substituents and electron-donating substituents, we found that these compounds exhibited some similar photophysical properties but exhibited different fluorescence in the solid state. All compounds were highly emissive in dichloromethane at room temperature (λem = 512-523 nm, ΦPL > 0.9). When these compounds were applied in blue-driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light-emitting materials, the devices showed luminescence efficiency ranging from 1.09 to 34.13 lm/W. Their luminescence and electrochemical properties could be used for understanding the structure-property relationship of BODIPY compounds and developing functional fluorescent materials.

Abstract
The first enantioselective addition of alkyl BODIPYs to Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates is reported. This is the first reported enantioselective methodology using the methylene position of BODIPYs as a nucleophile. The reaction is efficiently catalyzed by cinchona alkaloids, achieving high enantioselectivities and total diastereoselectivity. The use of cinchona alkaloid pseudo enantiomers (chinine/cinchonine) allows us to obtain both pairs of enantiomers in similar yields and enantioselectivities, a common issue in this type of reaction. The photophysical study of these dyes (absorption and fluorescence) has been performed in order to determine their parameters and explore future possible application in bioimaging. In addition, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) studies supported by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were also performed.

Abstract
Several pyrene-boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and pyrene-BODIPY-ferrocene derivatives with a fully conjugated pyrene fragment appended to the α-position(s) of the BODIPY core have been prepared by Knoevenagel condensation reaction and characterized by one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry as well as X-ray crystallography. The redox properties of new donor-acceptor BODIPY dyads and triads were studied by electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV)) and spectroelectrochemical approaches. Formation of weakly bonded noncovalent complexes between the new pyrene-BODIPYs and nanocarbon materials (C60, C70, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), and graphene) was studied by UV-vis, steady-state fluorescent, and time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. UV-vis and fluorescent spectroscopy are indicative of the much stronger and selective interaction between new dyes and (6,5)-SWCNT as well as graphene compared to that of C60 and C70 fullerenes. In agreement with these data, transient absorption spectroscopy provided no evidence for any significant change in excited-state lifetime or photoinduced charge transfer between pyrene-BODIPYs and C60 or C70 fullerenes when the pyrene-BODIPY chromophores were excited into the lowest-energy singlet excited state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations suggest that the pyrene fragments are fully conjugated into the π-system of BODIPY core, which correlates well with the experimental data.

Abstract
A new series of dendronized bodipys containing pyrene units was synthesized and characterized. Their optical and photophysical properties were determined by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This series includes three different compounds. The first one has an anisole group linked to the bodipy unit, which was used as the reference compound. In the second, the bodipy core is linked to a zero generation dendron with one pyrene unit. The third compound contains a first generation Fréchet-type dendron bearing two pyrene units. In this work, the combination pyrene-bodipy was selected as the donor-acceptor pair for this fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) study. Doubtless, these two chromophores exhibit high quantum yields, high extinction coefficients, and both their excitation and emission wavelengths are located in the visible region. This report presents a FRET study of a novel series of pyrene-bodipy dendritic molecules bearing flexible spacers. We demonstrated via spectroscopic studies that FRET phenomena occur in these dyads.

Abstract
Boron complexes of calix[4]phyrins (1.1.1.1) were prepared by reacting the free-base ligands with BF3·Et2O. The reaction conditions can be efficiently tailored to produce mono- or di-boron calixphyrins. Mono-BF2 calixphyrins with boron coordinating to either the dipyrrin, BF2[H(Calix)], or dipyrromethane, BF2[H(Calix)] and BF2[H2(Calix)]+, bonding sites were isolated. The dipyrromethane isomer, BF2[H(Calix)], isomerises into BF2[H(Calix)] which kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate is an intramolecular process. Two isomers of B2OF2(Calix) were isolated, one isomer bonding via the dipyrrin sites with the FBOBF moiety in cisoid geometry, and the second isomer bonding via the dipyrromethane sites with the FBOBF moiety in transoid geometry. Although the cisoid/dipyrrin isomer was calculated to be most energetically favourable for B2OF2(Calix), the isolation of the transoid/dipyrromethane isomer is postulated to occur via the presumed intermediate (BF2)2(Calix), for which DFT indicated a preference for transoid/dipyrromethane geometry.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of two pyrene-bodipy molecular dyads, composed of a phenyl-pyrene (Py-Ph) linked to the meso position of a bodipy (BD) molecule with either H-atoms (BD1) or ethyl groups (BD2) at the 2,6 positions, are investigated by stationary, nanosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy. The properties of these dyads (Py-Ph-BD1 and Py-Ph-BD2) are compared to those of their constituent chromophores in two solvents namely 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) and acetonitrile (ACN). Stationary spectroscopy reveals a weak coupling among the subunits in both dyads. Excitation of the pyrene (Py) subunit leads to emission that is totally governed by the BD subunits in both dyads pointing to excitation energy transfer (EET) from the Py to BD chromophore. Femtosecond fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that EET takes place within 0.3-0.5 ps and is mostly independent of the solvent and the type of the BD subunit. The EET lifetime is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by Förster theory. After EET has taken place, Py-Ph-BD1 in DCE and Py-Ph-BD2 in both solvents decay mainly radiatively to the ground state with 3.5-5.0 ns lifetimes which are similar to those of the individual BD chromophores. However, the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is quenched having a lifetime of 1 ns. This points to the opening of an additional non-radiative channel of the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in this solvent, most probably charge separation (CS). Target analysis of the TA spectra has shown that the CS follows inverted kinetics and is substantially slower than the recombination of the charge-separated state. Occurrence of CS with Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is also supported by energetic considerations. The above results indicate that only a small change in the structure of the BD units incorporated in the dyads significantly affects the excited state dynamics leading either to a dyad with long lifetime and high fluorescence quantum yield or to a dyad with ability to undergo CS.

Abstract
BODIPY laser dyes constitute a fascinating topic of research in modern photochemistry due to the large variety of options its chromophore offers, which is ready available for a multitude of synthetic routes. Indeed, in the literature one can find a huge battery of compounds based on the indacene core. The possibility of modulating the spectroscopic properties or inducing new photophysical processes by the substitution pattern of the BODIPY dyes has boosted the number of scientific and technological applications for these fluorophores. Along the following lines, I will overview the main results achieved in our laboratory with BODIPYs oriented to optoelectronic as well to biophotonic applications, stressing the more relevant photophysical issues to be considered in the design of a tailor-made BODIPY for a certain application and pointing out some of the remaining challenges.

Abstract
Fluorescent [2]rotaxane BC12P5 is successfully constructed with 1,4-diethoxypillar[5]arene as wheel over a long alkyl axle with Bodipy chromophore as one stopper for the first time. NMR spectra clearly reveal its molecular shuttle nature triggered by multiple external stimuli including solvent polarity and temperature. In particular, the fluorescence nature introduced into [2]rotaxane BC12P5 renders it a good sensor for the external stimuli. Nevertheless, the supramolecular gel successfully fabricated from this novel rotaxane system via self-assembly in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) also shows reversible gel-sol phase transition upon multiple external stimuli such as heating/cooling, shaking/resting, or the addition of different anions. Interestingly, exposure of the supramolecular gel film to HCl or ammonia vapor induces the change in the film fluorescence intensity, endowing this system with a potential application in gas detecting.

Abstract
A series of meso-substituted boron-bipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are synthesized and their laser and photophysical properties systematically studied. Laser emission covering a wide visible spectral region (from blue to orange) is obtained by just changing the electron donor character of the heteroatom at position 8. The additional presence of methyl groups at positions 3 and 5 results in dyes with a photostability similar to that of the unsubstituted dye but with much improved efficiency. Correlation of the lasing properties of the different dyes to their photophysical properties provides inklings to define synthetic strategies of new BODIPY dyes with enhanced efficiency and modulated wavelength emission over the visible spectral region.

Abstract
Two new 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) derivatives containing ancillary BODIPY chromophores attached at the 5- and 5'-positions (BB3) or 6- and 6'-positions (BB4) were prepared and characterized. In this work, the basic photophysics, electrochemistry, and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of BB3 and BB4 are compared with those previously reported for a related bpy-BODIPY derivative (BB2) (J. Phys. Chem. C 2011, 115, 17993-18001). Cyclic voltammetry revealed that BB3 and BB4 display reversible 2e(-) oxidation and reduction waves, which consist of two closely spaced (50-70 mV) 1e(-) events. This redox behavior is consistent with the frontier molecular orbitals calculated for BB3 and BB4 and indicates that the 2,2'-bipyridine spacer of each bpy-BODIPY homologue does not facilitate efficient electronic communication between the tethered indacene units. In the presence of a coreactant such as tri-n-propylamine (TPA) or benzoyl peroxide (BPO), BB3 and BB4 exhibit strong ECL and produce spectra that are very similar to their corresponding photoluminescence profiles. The ECL signal obtained under annihilation conditions, however, is significantly different and is characterized by two distinct bands. One of these bands is centered at ∼570 nm and is attributed to emission via an S- or T-route. The second band occurs at longer wavelengths and is centered around ∼740 nm. The shape and concentration dependence of this long-wavelength ECL signal is not indicative of emission from an excimer or aggregate, but rather it suggests that a new emissive species is formed from the bpy-BODIPY luminophores during the annihilation process.

Abstract
We report a refined and expanded synthetic study of 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-(aryl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene under treatment with POCl3/DMSO. The 2-chloro-6-methylsulfide derivative (Kim TI, Park S, Choi Y and Kim Y. Chem. Asian J. 2011; 6: 1358-61.) was one of five co-eluants, including 2,6-disulfido and -dichloro species, and mono-substituted counterparts. The 8-meso tail group modifies product distribution. The different sulfur-containing products undergo different "off-on" responses with NaOCl (10 equiv.). Compounds 4b and 2b exhibit low toxicity and were found to enter juxtanuclear regions in neuroblastoma.
