Abstract
In this paper, Au@Ag nanopencil is designed as a multimodality plasmonic nanoprobe based on asymmetric etching for the detection of SCN- and ClO- . Au@Ag nanopencil with Au tip and Au@Ag rod is prepared by asymmetric tailoring of uniformly grown silver-covered gold nanopyramids under the combined effect of partial galvanic replacement and redox reaction. By asymmetric etching in different systems, Au@Ag nanopencil exhibits diversified changes in the plasmonic absorption band: O2 •- facilitated by SCN- etches Au@Ag rod from the end to the tip, causing a blue shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak as the aspect ratio decreases; while the ClO- can retain Au@Ag shell and etch Ag within rod from the tip to the end, causing a redshift of the LSPR peak as the coupling resonance weakens. Based on peak shifts in different directions, a multimodality detection of SCN- and ClO- has been established. The results demonstrate the detection limits of SCN- and ClO- are 160 and 6.7 nm, and the linear ranges are 1-600 µm and 0.05-13 µm, respectively. The finely designed Au@Ag nanopencil not only broadens the horizon of designing heterogeneous structures, but also enriches the strategy of constructing multimodality sensing platform.

Abstract
Thiocyanate (SCN-) concentration monitoring in food is important to ensure the health and safety of the consumers.A colorimetric detection of thiocyanate (SCN-) based on the nanozymatic activity of gold nanoparticle-graphene quantum dots (GQDs-Au NPs) hybrids in the presence of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2O2 has been proposed. Here, a new synthesis method of GQDs directly from graphite was introduced. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the size of the GQDs was 3-5 nm, and the emission peak appeared at 450 nm. As-synthesized GQDs was utilized to produce GQDs-Au NPs hybrids without additional chemicals. However, the presence of SCN- inhibits the growth of Au NPs, the resulting Au NPs are smaller in size. Moreover, SCN- group is well-known for hydroxyl radical (OH) scavenging activity that could oxidize TMB. Both effects boosted the nanozymatic activity of GQDs-Au NPs to detect SCN- under optimized conditions with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3 nM. Present study also validates the methodology to detect SCN- in raw milk.

Abstract
The concentration of thiocyanate (SCN−) in bodily fluids is a good indicator of potential and severe health issues such as nasal bleeding, goiters, vertigo, unconsciousness, several inflammatory diseases, and cystic fibrosis. Herein, a visual SCN− sensing method has been developed using the enzyme-like nature of positively charged gold quantum dots (Au QDs) mixed with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This research also reports a new method of synthesizing positively charged Au QDs directly from gold nanoparticles through a hydrothermal process. Microscopic imaging has showed that the Au QDs were 3–5 nm in size, and the emission wavelength was at 438 nm. Au QDs did not display any enzyme-like nature while mixed up with TMB and H2O2. However, the nanozymatic activity of Au QDs appeared when SCN− was included, leading to a very low detection limit (LOD) of 8 nM and 99–105% recovery in complex media. The steady-state kinetic reaction of Au QDs showed that Au QDs had a lower Michaelis–Menten constant (Km) toward H2O2 and TMB, which indicates that the Au QDs had a higher affinity for H2O2 and TMB than horseradish peroxidase (HRP). A mechanism study has revealed that the scavenging ability of hydroxyl (•OH) radicals by the SCN− group plays an important role in enhancing the sensitivity in this study. The proposed nanozymatic “Off–On” SCN− sensor was also successfully validated in commercial milk samples.

Abstract
Simple colorimetric biosensor was designed for the quantification SCN- ions based on the principle of colorimetric reactions between Co2+ and SCN- ions reaction using synthesized chromophore (2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-5-yl)(phenyl) methanone (HBPM)/Co2+ ions conjugate which was synthesized via greener ultrawave sonication method. The structural characterization of the HBPM chromophore was confirmed by using NMR, ESI-MASS spectral techniques and the photophysical properties, sensor studies were done by using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. Our designed HBPM/Co2+ ions conjugates have selectively detected SCN- ions qualitatively and quantitatively in the presence of other human salivary interferents. As per clinical point of view, three different ranges of SCN- ions from 0.1 to 2 mM for normal, 3 to 10 mM for disease, and 100-600 µM for below normal ranges were tested successfully by our developed sensor and the LoD was calculated as 5.43 nM. The real potent application of the developed biosensor was tested in human salivary samples of both smokers and non-smokers under different ages and obtained results shown good agreement with existing clinical methods.

Abstract
Thiocyanate could effectively inhibit bacteria in milk and extend the shelf life of milk. However, excessive addition will lead to health risks. Therefore, the determination of thiocyanate in raw milk has received a lot of attention, but the determination could be interfered with by other components in raw milk and the pre-treatment of raw milk is complex. In this study, a new pretreatment method combined with ion chromatography (IC) for rapid and sensitive determination of thiocyanate is proposed. An acetonitrile/(NH4)2SO4 aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) was developed for the separation and enrichment of thiocyanate in raw milk. Response surface methodology was performed to optimize the extraction conditions and an efficient pretreatment were obtained using ATPS composed of 42% acetonitrile (w/w) and 16% (NH4)2SO4 (w/w), with the pH 4.7, and the recovery of thiocyanate reached 107.24 ± 0.5%, and the enrichment ratio was 10.74 ± 0.03. IC was used to establish a thiocyanate enrichment method. The linear range was from 0.05 to 15 mg/L and R2 = 0.998, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.2 μg/L, the limit of quantification (LQD) was 0.6 μg/L. Hence, it is feasible to combine ATPS with IC for the enrichment and determination of thiocyanate in raw milk.

Abstract
There is an increasing demand for monitoring environmental pollutants and the control requires new sensing materials with better sensitivity, selectivity and reliability. In this study, a series of Co7 clusters incorporating various flexible polyhydroxyamine ligands are explored, with the first report of thiocyanate recognition triggered by crystal formation using a Co7 crystal (1). For this, we have fortunately synthesized three new mixed metal Co7 clusters with fascinating structural features. The clusters were characterized by spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods and later by DFT calculations. Due to its better emission spectrum, 1 was further utilized for evaluating its sensing ability towards various anions in water. Surprisingly, 1 shows better quenching ability towards the recognition of SCN− with a better binding constant. The luminescence quenching towards SCN− detection was further verified by the single crystal method, HSAB principle (symbiosis) and theoretical calculations such as DFT studies. The SCXRD data clearly suggest that the Co7 (1) can be converted into Co14 (1a) by direct reaction with NaSCN under ambient conditions. Besides the soft/hard acid–base concept (symbiosis), the energies of formation, and Co–NCS and Co–OH2 bond energies (as unravelled by DFT) are responsible for this transformation. Therefore, 1 can be used as a selective and sensitive sensor for the detection of thiocyanate anions based on the fluorescence amplification and quenching method. Further, the designed cluster has also been utilized to detect anions in human blood samples to differentiate a smoker and a non-smoker. It has been concluded that the samples of smokers have a high degree of thiocyanate (∼12 or 9.5 mg L−1) in comparison to those of non-smokers (2–3 mg L−1). Thus, this kind of cluster material has high potentiality in the field of bio-medical science in future endeavours for identification of the extent of thiocyanate content in smokers. A new Co based sensor for thiocyanate recognition by formation of the dimeric crystals is designed to distinguish a smoker from a non-smoker.![]()

Abstract
In this work, a novel convenient colorimetric method for sensitive detection of thiocyanate (SCN-) has been developed based on its suppression of the oxidase-like activity of palladium square nanoplates on reduced graphene oxide (Pd SP@rGO). SCN- can be adsorbed onto the surface of Pd SP@rGO via binding with Pd atoms and blocks the active sites that mimic oxidase, thus inhibiting the corresponding chromogenic reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, which has been comprehensively revealed by the UV-vis spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The color fading exhibits SCN- concentration-dependent behavior and can be easily recorded by either UV-vis spectroscopy or naked-eye observation. Therefore, both quantitative detection via measurement of the decrease in absorbance and visual detection of SCN- can be achieved. Owing to the intrinsic amplification of signals by the oxidase-like activity of Pd SP@rGO without resorting to unstable and destructive H2O2, this assay is straightforward, robust and sensitive enough for the detection of SCN- in real samples. Furthermore, an "INH" logic gate is rationally constructed based on the proposed colorimetric SCN- sensor.

Abstract
For the first time, we present an original sensing strategy with an ultra-wide detection window from 17 nM to 20 mM to detect SCN- ions. Initially, we investigated the clustering and optical properties of noble metal sol nanoparticles (NPs) due to the competitive interaction of thiocyanate ions (SCN-) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under weak acidic conditions, and found that different dimensions and scales of nanoclusters containing the alkyne-embedded Au@Ag NPs and relatively small Ag NPs could be achieved by the mediation of CTAB through electrostatic forces and hydrophobic interaction, in which SCN- could be covalently bonded with the silver surface of NPs to form a compact molecular layer (-Ag-S-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N), and CTAB could only occupy remaining sites. In this process, we found that SCN- always runs counter to CTAB and tends to dissolve nanoclusters, so that they occupy the exposed surface of NPs in nanoclusters rather than the binding sites of one another. Remarkably, when the concentration of SCN- initially increased, two highly recognizable SERS emissions, which were assigned to alkyne reporter molecules (2208 cm-1) and C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N of SCN- (2110 cm-1), respectively, were rapidly detected, and their ratios (I2110/I2208) increased linearly proportional to the concentration of SCN- over a range of 17 nM to 172 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 nM. With the further increase of SCN-, small Ag NPs started to desorb from the surface of individual Au@Ag NPs and dissociated in the solution but did not contribute to SERS signals. Instead, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of pure silver NPs at 385 nm increased gradually in the range from 0.5 to 20 mM with an LOD of 0.2 mM. Of particular significance, this simple sensor in conjunction with surface-enhanced Raman-extinction spectroscopy can be used for the rapid detection of extensive samples with an ultra-wide detection window, such as body fluids (saliva, urine, and serum) and food (milk powder and brassica vegetables), which is far superior to that of ion chromatography (IC).

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of selenium nanoparticle (an immune booster) and naloxone (an opioid receptor antagonist) as a new adjuvant in increasing immune responses against killed whole-cell Vibrio cholerae in a mouse cholera model. The Se NPs were synthesized and characterized by UV-visible, DLS, and zeta potential analysis. The SEM image confirmed the uniformity of spherical morphology of nanoparticle shape with 34 nm in size. The concentration of the Se NPs was calculated as 0.654 μg/ml in the ICP method. The cytotoxic activity of Se NPs on Caco-2 cells was assessed by the MTT assay and revealed 82.05% viability of cells after 24 h exposure with 100 μg/ml of Se NPs. Female BALB/C mice were orally immunized three times on days 0, 14, and 28, and challenge experiments were performed on immunized neonates with toxigenic V. cholerae. Administration of Se NP diet led to significant increase in V. cholerae-specific IgG and IgA responses in serum and saliva and caused protective immunity and 83.3% survival in challenge experiment against 1 LD50 V. cholerae in a group receiving diet of Se NPs compared with other groups including Dukoral vaccine. The IL-4 and IL-5 were significantly increased in response to WC+daily diet of Se NPs with or without naloxone. Naloxone proved no effect on IL-4 and IL-5 increase and is proposed as null in the cytokine and antibody production process. These results reveal that daily diet of Se NPs could efficiently induce immune cell effectors in both humoral and mucosal levels.

Abstract
In this work, 1.8 nm graphene quantum dots (GQDs), exhibiting bright blue fluorescence, were prepared using a bottom-up synthesis from citric acid. The fluorescence of the GQDs could be almost completely quenched (about 96%) by adding Hg2+. Quenching was far less efficient with other similar heavy metals, Tl+, Pb2+ and Bi3+. Fluorescence could be near quantitatively restored through the introduction of thiocyanate. This "turn-on" fluorescence can thus be used to detect both or either environmental and physiological contaminants mercury and thiocyanate and could prove useful for the development of simple point-of-care diagnostics in the future. Abstract
Based on the anti-aggregation mechanism of citrate stabilized gold nanoparticle (AuNPs), a new specific and sensitive colorimetric sensor for thiocyanate (SCN-) was developed. In this scheme, the AuNPs were aggregated in the presence of the aggregating agent 2-aminopyridine (2-AP) due to electrostatic attraction. The solution color changed from red to blue. When SCN- was present, SCN- formed a sulfur-gold bond with the AuNPs to protect the AuNPs from aggregation. Thiocyanate can be detected by the color change of the solution from blue to red. The results showed that the absorbance ratio A675/A520 was linear with the concentration of SCN- in the range of 0.4 - 1.2 μmol L-1 by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The limit of detection (LOD) of this assay was 0.37 μmol L-1. The system also had excellent selectivity and anti-interference ability. In addition, this method was successfully used for the detection of SCN- in actual water samples and achieved good results.

Abstract
In this study, core-shell Au@Pt nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with peroxidase catalytic activity were synthesized by the seed-mediated method, and were used to catalyze the reaction of luminol-H2O2 to enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) intensity. It was found that thiocyanate (SCN-) can effectively inhibit the catalytic activity of Au@Pt NPs. Based on this phenomenon, a method to detect SCN- by using the Au@Pt NPs-catalytic luminol-H2O2 CL system was established, which has an ultra-low detection limit and an ultra-wide linear range, as well as the advantages of being simple and having low-cost and convenient operation. The research mechanism indicated that SCN- could be adsorbed on the surface of Au@Pt NPs and occupies the active sites of Pt nanostructures, which led to a decrease in the amount of Pt0 and a loss of the excellent catalytic activity of Au@Pt NPs. After optimizing the experimental conditions, this assay for detecting SCN- exhibited a good linear range from 5 to 180 nM, and the low detection limit was 2.9 nM. In addition, this approach has been successfully applied to the detection of SCN- in tap-water samples, which has practical application value and embodies good development prospects.

Abstract
SCN- is one of the most important anions in metabolic processes. However, the investigation of SCN- in living systems is restricted by the lack of stable functional molecular tools. Herein, the first fluorene-based polymer fluorescent probe V1 was synthesized through rational design. Compared with small molecule fluorescent probes, V1 exhibited excellent fluorescence stability in bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. Furthermore, the V1-based paper sensor was highly selective toward SCN- in aqueous solution. Significantly, these merits of the probe V1 enable the detection of SCN- in different living cell lines and zebrafish.

Abstract
Tumor eradication has many challenges due to the difficulty of selectively delivering anticancer drugs to malignant cells avoiding contact with healthy tissues/organs. The improvement of antitumor efficacy and the reduction of systemic side effects can be achieved using drug loaded nanoparticles. In this study, poly (ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles (PECA-NPs) were prepared using an emulsion polymerization method and their potential for cancer treatment was investigated. The size, polydispersity index and zeta potential of prepared nanoparticles are about 80 nm, 0.08 and -39.7 mV, respectively. The stability test shows that the formulation is stable for 15 days, while an increase in particle size occurs after 30 days. TEM reveals the spherical morphology of nanoparticles; furthermore, FTIR and 1H NMR analyses confirm the structure of PECA-NPs and the complete polymerization. The nanoparticles demonstrate an in vitro concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines (Caco-2), as assessed by MTT assay. The anticancer activity of PECA-NPs was studied on 3D tumor spheroids models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and kidney adenocarcinoma cells (A498) to better understand how the nanoparticles could interact with a complex structure such as a tumor. The results confirm the antitumor activity of PECA-NPs. Therefore, these systems can be considered good candidates in tumor treatment.

Abstract
Allylamine-functionalized silicon quantum dots (ASQDs) of high photostability are synthesized by a robust inverse micelle method to use the material as a fluorescent probe for selective recognition of thiocyanate (a biomarker of a smoker and a nonsmoker). The synthesized ASQDs were characterized by absorption, emission, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Surface morphology is studied by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The synthesized material exhibits desirable fluorescence behavior with a high quantum yield. A selective and accurate (up to 10-10 M) method of sensing of thiocyanate anion is developed based on fluorescence amplification and quenching of ASQDs. The sensing mechanism is investigated and interpreted with a crystal clear mechanistic approach through the modified Stern-Volmer plot. The developed material and the method is applied to recognize the anion in the human blood sample for identification of the degree of smoking. The material deserves high potentiality in the field of bio-medical science.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a type of mycotoxin generated from the metabolism of Aspergillus and Penicillium, and is extremely toxic to humans, livestock, and poultry. However, traditional assays for the detection of OTA are expensive and complicated. Other than OTA aptamer, OTA itself at high concentration can also adsorb on the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and further inhibit AuNPs salt aggregation. We herein report a new OTA assay by applying the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of AuNPs and their aggregates. The result obtained from only one single linear calibration curve is not reliable, and so we developed a “double calibration curve” method to address this issue and widen the OTA detection range. A number of other analytes were also examined, and the structural properties of analytes that bind with the AuNPs were further discussed. We found that various considerations must be taken into account in the detection of these analytes when applying AuNP aggregation-based methods due to their different binding strengths.

Abstract
Inorganic bromide (Br−) is an important contaminant ion as it can originate from the overuse of illegal methyl bromide as a fumigant in stored rice samples. Herein, we developed a simple and highly sensitive colorimetric sensor for bromide ion detection in rice samples. The sensor is based on the anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by Br− in the presence of Cr3+, which made the method more selective than other typical aggregations of nanoparticles. The AuNPs underwent an aggregation process as a result of the coordination of Cr3+ and the carboxylate group of a citrate ion stabilized the AuNPs, resulting in a red-to-blue color change. When Br− was pre-mixed with the AuNPs and Cr3+ was added, the solution color changed from blue to red with an increase in the Br− concentration. The anti-aggregation process can be detected with the naked eye and monitored using UV-vis spectrophotometry. The linear calibration curve ranged between 0.31 and 3.75 μM Br− with a low LOD and LOQ of 0.04 and 0.13 μM. The recovery was excellent, ranging from 79.9–92.2% with an RSD of less than 4.0%. The good inter-day and intra-day precisions were 2.9–6.4% and 3.1–7.1%, respectively. The developed sensor has proved to provide a robust method for Br− detection in rice samples. In this work, we developed a AuNP colorimetric sensor for the facile, sensitive and selective detection of bromide ions in rice samples.![]()

Abstract
Sensor technology for the rapid detection of the analytes with high sensitivity and selectivity has several challenges. Despite the challenges, colorimetric sensors have been widely accepted for its high sensitive and selective response towards various analytes. In this review, colorimetric sensors for the detection of biomolecules like protein, DNA, pathogen and chemical compounds like heavy metal ions, toxic gases and organic compounds have been elaborately discussed. The visible sensing mechanism based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) using metal nanoparticles like Au, Ag, thin film interference using SiO2 and colorimetric array-based technique have been highlighted. The optical property of metal nanoparticles enables a visual color change during its interaction with the analytes owing to the dispersion and aggregation of nanoparticles. Recently, colorimetric changes using silica substrate for detection of protein and small molecules by thin film interference as a visible sensing mechanism has been developed without the usage of fluorescent or radioisotopes labels. Multilayer of biomaterials were used as a platform where reflection and interference of scattering light occur due to which color change happens leading to rapid sensing. Colorimetric array-based technique for the detection of organic compounds using chemoresponsive dyes has also been focused wherein the interaction of the analytes with the substrate coated with chemoresponsive dyes gives colorimetric change.

Abstract
This work describes a fast and simple assay for in situ detection of thiocyanate, i.e., a biomarker of tobacco smoke exposure, in human saliva. The assay is based on the formation of an iron(III)-thiocyanate colored complex in a paper-based sensing platform and subsequent image analysis using a scanner as detection device. Experimental parameters influencing the color intensity of the complex were fully evaluated, including the selection of detection conditions, type of paper substrate, test zone dimensions and composition as well as the stability of the paper-based device. Under optimal conditions, the detection limit was 0.06mM of thiocyanate, and the repeatability, expressed as relative standard deviation, was 3%. The proposed method, characterized by its simplicity, portability and low sample consumption, was applied to the detection of thiocyanate in a series of human saliva samples. Average thiocyanate levels in the ranges 0.28-0.87mM and 0.78-4.28mM were found for non-smokers and smokers, respectively. Recovery studies were carried out at two concentration levels, showing recovery values in the range of 96.1-103.6%.

Abstract
Fluorescent chemosensors for detecting single anions have been largely synthesized. However, the simultaneous detection and degradation of multiple anions remain a major challenge. Herein we report the synthesis of a white emission nanoprobe on the basis of a Coumarin-Rhodamine CR1-Eu complex coordinated to dipicolinic acid (dpa)-PEG-Fe3O4 nanoparticles for the selective detection of ClO(-) and SCN(-) ions on controlling by a logic gate. The obtained nanoprobe exhibits three individual primary colors (blue, green, and red) as well as white emission at different excitation energies. Interestingly, this nanoprobe shows a marked rose red to violet emission color change in response to ClO(-), a reversible violet to rose red emission color change in response to SCN(-), and high ClO(-) and SCN(-) selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.037 and 0.250 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the SCN(-) and ClO(-) can degrade simultaneously through the redox reaction between ClO(-) and SCN(-).

Abstract
Lipase is a neglected enzyme in the field of gold nanoparticle-based enzyme assays. This paper reports a novel colorimetric probe to rapidly visualize lipase activities by using Tween 20 functioned GNPs (Tween 20-GNPs) as a reporter. The present strategy hence could overcome the limitations caused by the heterogeneous interface in lipase assay. Catalytic hydrolytic cleavage of the ester bond in Tween 20-GNPs by lipase will trigger the rapid aggregation of GNPs at a high salt solution. The color change from red to purple could be used to sense the activity of lipase. The detection limit (3σ) is as low as 2.8 × 10-2 mg/mL. A preliminary enzyme activity screening was carried out for seven commercially purchased lipase samples. It also has been successfully applied to detecting lipase in fermentation broth of Bacillus subtilis without any pretreatment.

Abstract
Thiocyanate (SCN(-)) is a small anion byproduct of cyanide metabolism. Several methods have been reported to measure SCN(-) above the micromolar level. However, SCN(-) is derived from many sources such as cigarettes, waste water, food and even car exhaust and its effect is cumulative, which makes it necessary to develop methods for the detection of trace SCN(-). In this paper, a simple and ultrasensitive turn-on fluorescence assay of trace SCN(-) is established based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and fluorescein. The detection limit is 0.09 nM, to the best of our knowledge, which has been the lowest detection LOD ever without the aid of costly instrumentation. The fluorescence of fluorescein is significantly quenched when it is attached to the surface of AuNPs. Upon the addition of SCN(-), the fluorescence is turned on due to the competition action between SCN(-) and fluorescein towards the surface of AuNPs. Under an optimum pH, AuNPs size and concentration, incubation time, the fluorescence enhancement efficiency [(IF-I0)/I0] displays a linear relationship with the concentration of SCN(-) in the range of 1.0 nM to 40.0 nM. The fluorescein-AuNP sensor shows absolutely high selectivity toward SCN(-) than other 16 anions. The common metal ions, amino acids and sugars have no obvious interference effects. The accuracy and precision were evaluated based on the recovery experiments. The cost effective sensing system is successfully applied for the determination of SCN(-) in milk products and saliva samples.

Abstract
We have described a simple and low-cost visual method for on-site detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in air based on the antiaggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The bubbling of H2S into a weak alkaline buffer solution leads to the formation of HS-, which can stabilize the AuNPs and ensure the AuNPs maintain their red color even in a Tris buffer solution containing 80 mM NaCl with the presence of Tween 80. The stabilization of the AuNPs is attributed to the adsorption of negatively charged S2- on the AuNPs surface. In contrast, without the bubbling of H2S, AuNPs aggregate and change color from red to blue. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method exhibits excellent visual sensitivity with a naked-eye detectable limit of 0.5 ppm (v/v), making the on-site detection of H2S possible. This method also possesses good selectivity toward H2S over other gases by using a simple SO2 removal device. The successful determination of the concentrations of H2S in local air indicates the potential application of this cost-effective method.

Abstract
Based on the catalytic etching of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), a label-free colorimetric probe was developed for the detection of Cu(2+) in aqueous solutions. AuNPs were first stabilized by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide in NH3-NH4Cl (0.6M/0.1M) solutions. Then thiosulfate (S2O3(2-)) ions were introduced and AuNPs were gradually dissolved by dissolved oxygen. With the further addition of Cu(2+), Cu(NH3)4(2+) oxidized AuNPs to produce Au(S2O3)2(3-) and Cu(S2O3)3(5-), while the later was oxid-ized to Cu(NH3)4(2+) again by dissolved oxygen. The dissolving rate of AuNPs was thereby remarkably promoted and Cu(2+) acted as the catalyst. The process went on due to the sufficient supply of dissolved oxygen and AuNPs were rapidly etched. Meanwhile, a visible color change from red to colorless was observed. Subsequent tests confirmed such a non-aggregation-based method as a sensitive (LOD=5.0 nM or 0.32 ppb) and selective (at least 100-fold over other metal ions except for Pb(2+) and Mn(2+)) way for the detection of Cu(2+) (linear range, 10-80 nM). Moreover, our results show that the color change induced by 40 nM Cu(2+) can be easily observed by naked eyes, which is particularly applicable to fast on-site investigations.
