Abstract
We report a templated Scholl oxidation strategy for the preparation of the first β-diketiminate (BDI) ligands embedded within a 24-electron π-system backbone. The resulting benzo[f,g]tetracene BDI ligand was coordinated to a zinc centre and electrochemical studies showed the redox active nature of the ligand.

Abstract
Norcorrole Ni(II) complexes have recently received considerable attention because they are readily accessible antiaromatic molecules. Their high stability under ambient conditions and ease of synthesis have enabled the exploration of the intrinsic properties of antiaromatic molecules. Here, we report the synthesis and properties of meso-meso singly linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrids and a triply linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrid. The singly linked and triply linked porphyrin-norcorrole hybrids were fully characterized, including an X-ray structural analysis. Due to their orthogonal conformation, the singly linked hybrids maintain the individual electronic properties of their porphyrin and norcorrole subunits, while the triply linked hybrid shows a significantly smaller electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap (0.45 eV) than that of Ni(II) dimesitylnorcorrole (1.08 eV). Furthermore, the triply linked hybrid exhibits singlet diradical characteristics, as confirmed by VT NMR, ESR, and SQUID experiments.

Abstract
Four new β-functionalized π-extended cobalt corroles with one and two dicyanovinyl (DCV) or dicyanobutadienyl (DCBD) moieties at the 3- and 3,17-positions have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Interestingly, the synthesized DCV- and DCBD-appended cobalt corroles displayed panchromatic and near-infrared absorption in the range 300-1100 nm in CH2Cl2 and pyridine solvents. (MN)2-(Cor)Co and A2MN2-(Cor)Co exhibited 8-9 times enhancement in the molar absorptivity of the Q band compared to the parent corrole ((Cor)Co). The unique absorption spectral features of these β-functionalized cobalt corroles are splitting, broadening, and red-shifting in the Soret and Q bands. One DCV unit brings a 30-46 nm red shift, whereas one DCBD unit brings a 40-75 nm red shift in the Q band compared to the corresponding precursors. This is rare that the intensity of the longest Q band is greater than or equal to the Soret-like bands. These corrole derivatives exhibit UV-vis spectral features similar to those of chlorophyll a. A 220 mV positive shift per DCV group and 160 mV positive shift per DCBD group were observed in the first oxidation potentials compared to (Cor)Co in the desired direction for the utility of these cobalt complexes in electrocatalysis. DFT studies revealed that HOMO and LUMO were stabilized after appending DCV and DCBD groups on the corrole macrocycle and exhibited a "push-pull" behavior leading to promising material applications in nonlinear optics (NLO) and catalysis.

Abstract
Porphyrins are attracting increasing attention in materials science and photochemistry owing to their unique properties and diverse applications. This study focuses on modifying and tuning the absorption properties of porphyrins, specifically those of quinoidal porphyrins, to extend their spectral range into the near-infrared (NIR) region. We report the synthesis and structural and physical properties of quinone compounds derived from doubly and triply linked diporphyrins and their metal complexes. Doubly linked diporphyrinquinone exhibits broad panchromatic absorption properties in solution owing to its low symmetry. Metal complexation markedly extends its absorption range into the near-infrared region. In contrast, the metal complexes of the triply linked diporphyrinquinones exhibit sharp and strong absorption bands in the visible to near-infrared region owing to their higher symmetry. The longest absorption wavelength of the triply linked diporphyrinquinones was approximately 1500 nm, which was significantly more red-shifted than that of the doubly linked ones.

Abstract
The synthesis of several new compounds containing a chromophore and a helicenic moiety is reported. The preparation, characterisation and some physico-chemical studies are detailed. In particular, the two enantiomers of several chiral molecules of this type were separated by chiral HPLC (both analytically and in a preparative way) and their racemisation rates were determined for short-lived species. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circular polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements were performed for the compounds with a very long racemisation half-life. Chiral porphyrins and Bodipys both gave ECD and CPL responses over a large area of the visible spectrum.

Abstract
The fusion of tetrapyrroles with aromatic heterocycles constitutes a useful tool for manipulating their opto-electronic properties. In this work, the synthesis of naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins was achieved through a Heck reaction-based cascade of steps followed by the Scholl reaction. The naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins display a unique set of optical and electronic properties. Fusion of the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F2VTP) leads to a ~20% increase in the fluorescence lifetime, which is accompanied, unexpectedly, by a more than two-fold drop in the emission quantum yield (ϕ=0.018). In contrast, fusion of the isomeric naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F3VPT) results in a ~1.5-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield (ϕ=0.13) with a concomitant ~30 % increase in the fluorescence lifetime. This behavior suggests that fusion of the porphyrin with the naphthodithiopheno-system mainly affects the radiative rate constant in the Q-state deactivation pathway, where the effects of the isomeric naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene- versus naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene-fusion are essentially the opposite. Interestingly, nucleus-independent chemical shifts analysis revealed a considerable difference between the aromaticities of these two isomeric systems. Our results demonstrate that subtle structural differences in the fused components of the porphyrin can be reflected in rather significant differences between the photophysical properties of the resulting systems.

Abstract
Porphyrin dimers have been widely explored and studied owing to their importance in photosynthetic systems. A vast variety of dimers linked by different groups and at different angles have been synthesized and studied; however, the means by which to synthesize rigidly fused porphyrins with direct conjugation of the chromophores remains limited. Such a class of porphyrins may possess interesting properties that unconjugated or stacked dimers may not exhibit. In this study, bisbenzimidazole-fused porphyrin dimers and their mono- and bis-zinc derivatives are synthesized and characterized. As a consequence of excitonic coupling, these dimers exhibit a split Soret band irrespective of the metal ion in the porphyrin cavity. Steady-state fluorescence and excitation spectra followed by femtosecond transient absorption spectral studies of the heterometallated dimer, (free-base and zinc porphyrin) reveals the occurrence of efficient singlet-singlet energy transfer (>95 % efficiency and rate constant >1012 s-1 ) within the dyad. Further, donor-acceptor conjugates were formed by metal-ligand axial coordination of phenyl imidazole functionalized C60 and were characterized by a variety of physicochemical techniques. Excited state charge separation from both singlet and triplet excited states of ZnP in the conjugates has been established. The lifetime of the final charge-separated state was in the 30-40 μs range revealing charge stabilization. Interestingly, no charge separation in the conjugate derived from the heterometallated dimer was observed wherein excitation transfer dominated the process. The present study brings out the importance of the rigid π-spacer connecting porphyrin dimers in governing the energy and electron transfer events when coupled with an electron acceptor.

Abstract
Intramolecular fusion reactions of a p-terphenylene-bridged NiII porphyrin dimer gave different products, depending upon reaction conditions. Oxidation with Fe(OTf)3 provided syn- and anti-doubly heptagon-fused NiII porphyrin dimers showing enlarged π-electronic networks, probably via a radical mechanism, while treatment with methanesulfonic acid provided a spiro-pentagon-bridged NiII chlorin dimer via acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts type cyclization. Further, a doubly octagon-fused NiII porphyrin dimer was synthesized via a sequence of double meso-formylation, reduction to corresponding diol, and BF3 -catalyzed cyclization.

Abstract
Ditelluraporphodimethene, a nonaromatic porphyrinoid containing two tellurophene rings, reacted with palladium(II), platinum(II), and rhodium(I) following two different paths. Palladium(II) formed bonds to two tellurium donors of the macrocycle, yielding a side-on coordination compound, with a square planar (Te2Cl2) metal ion environment. An alternative reaction path has been observed for ditelluraporphodimethene with platinum(II) or rhodium(I) in high boiling solvents. These conditions led to the profound transformation, that is, one tellurium atom to a metal atom exchange, resulting in the formation of organometallic species containing metallacyclopentadiene rings, that is, 21-platina-23-telluraporphodimethene and 21-rhoda-23-telluraporphodimethene. The substitution reaction proceeded selectively at the tellurophene ring within the conjugated part of the molecule, that is, the tellurophene ring bound to two sp2 meso-carbon atoms. In the case of platinum, the exchange was accompanied by one meso-aryl ring fusion with the formed platinacyclopentadiene ring, and the platinum(II) macrocycle underwent reversible oxidation with chlorine. The products are stable and represent first nonaromatic examples of metalloporphyrinoids, with a metallacyclopentadiene ring incorporated into a porphodimethene skeleton.

Abstract
A tetra-functionalized pyrene precursor 4b is prepared using the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of 1,3,6,8-tetrabromopyrene with N-Boc-2-pyrroleboronic acid. 4b displayed a blue emission with a high quantum yield (ϕF = 0.89). 4b is subjected to [3 + 2] Lewis acid-catalyzed condensation with 2,2'-bithiophene-dialcohol 5, affording a planar bis-N2S2 internally linked with pyrene. The single-crystal X-ray structure of bis-N2S2 revealed a planar conformation with all of the pyrrolic nitrogens and thiophenic sulfurs pointing toward the macrocyclic core. Further, the reduction of bis-N2S2 was attempted in the presence of Zn/NH4Cl at room temperature in CHCl3. A sharp color change from pink to brown was observed presumably due to the formation of its reduced congener bis-N2S2-2H. However, the reduced species was found to revert back to its oxidized form over a period of 25 min in CHCl3. Density functional theory (DFT) studies reveal that the two monocyclic halves of bis-N2S2-2H exhibit differences in aromaticity depending on amino and imino pyrroles present inside each individual core. Such a conversion was also monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectral studies, and the exact composition of bis-N2S2-2H was confirmed by High-resolution/mass spectrometry (HR/MS) analysis. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal a weak aromatic character of bis-N2S2 due to the absence of global conjugation.

Abstract
We have developed an efficient protocol for the synthesis of meso,β-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrin systems 7-9 by PIFA-promoted intramolecular oxidative cyclization of easily accessible meso-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-appended porphyrins 6a-j. The absorption spectra of meso,β-pyrrolo- and indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrins 7-9 displayed bathochromic shifted (100-150 nm) and broadened Soret bands and Q bands in addition to intense band near IR region. The indolo[1,2-a]quinoxalino-fused porphyrin 9bZn with lower fluorescence quantum yield (0.003) and reduced energy gap (∼1.3 eV) was found to sensitize singlet oxygen effectively.

Abstract
A new synthetic method to fuse benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoindole to the porphyrin periphery at the β,β-positions has been developed, and its impact on the aromaticity and electronic structures is investigated. Reactivity investigation of the fused benzoimidazo-isoindole component reveals fluorescence quenching of a zinc porphyrin (AMIm-2) upon treatment with a Brønsted acid. The reaction of the zinc porphyrin (AMIm-2) with methyl iodide initiated a new organic transformation, resulting in the ring-opening of isoindole with the formation of an aldehyde and dimethylation of the benzoimidazo component. The fused benzoimidazo-isoindole component acted as a good ligand to bind platinum(ii), forming novel homobimetallic and heterobimetallic porphyrin complexes. The fusion of benzoimidazo-isoindole on the porphyrin ring resulted in bathochromically shifted absorptions and emissions, reflecting the extended conjugation of the porphyrin π-system. Time-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopy revealed stable excited state species of the benzoimidazo-isoindole fused porphyrins. Zinc porphyrin AMIm-2 promoted excited state electron transfer upon coordinating with an electron acceptor, C60, generating a long-lived charge-separated state, in the order of 37.4 μs. The formation of the exceptionally long-lived charge-separated state is attributed to the involvement of both singlet and triplet excited states of AMIm-2, which is rarely reported in porphyrins.

Abstract
Unsymmetric pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins were designed and synthesized. The cross-conjugated (AM 1 -AM 3 ) and linear-conjugated (AM 5 -AM 7 ) porphyrins displayed strikingly different sets of optical and electronic properties, both of which are unusual and nontypical of porphyrins. MCD, DFT, and TDDFT calculations suggest that multiple charge transfer states exist in both π-conjugated systems, which contributes to the complex absorption and MCD spectra of these molecular systems. The general Gouterman's four-orbital model used to explain porphyrin spectroscopy led to contradicting theoretical and experimental data, and is thus not applicable for these molecular systems. The "2 + 4" and "3 + 3" active spaces have been deduced and have proven effective to interpret the absorption and MCD spectra of the pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins, respectively. Spectroelectrochemistry of AM 5 -AM 7 revealed broad and intense IR absorptions in the range of 1500-2500 nm, illustrating the exceptional ability of these pentacene-fused systems to accommodate positive charges. A pronounced metal effect was observed for pentacene-fused porphyrins. While pentacene-fused Ni(II) porphyrin (AM6 ) demonstrated an abnormal ability to stabilize pentacene with a half-life of >28.3 days, the half-life of the free base and Zn(II) counterparts were normal, similar to those of pentacene analogues. This work provides important and useful information on guiding new material designs.

Abstract
Magnetism is typically associated with d- or f-block elements, but can also appear in organic molecules with unpaired π-electrons. This has considerably boosted the interest in such organic materials with large potential for spintronics and quantum applications. While several materials showing either d/f or π-electron magnetism have been synthesized, the combination of both features within the same structure has only scarcely been reported. Open-shell porphyrins (Pors) incorporating d-block transition metal ions represent an ideal platform for the realization of such architectures. Herein, the preparation of a series of open-shell, π-extended Pors that contain magnetically active metal ions (i.e., CuII , CoII , and FeII ) through a combination of in-solution and on-surface synthesis is reported. A detailed study of the magnetic interplay between π- and d-electrons in these metalloPors has been performed by scanning probe methods and density functional theory calculations. For the Cu and FePors, ferromagnetically coupled π-electrons are determined to be delocalized over the Por edges. For the CoPor, the authors find a Kondo resonance resulting from the singly occupied CoII dz 2 orbital to dominate the magnetic fingerprint. The Fe derivative exhibits the highest magnetization of 3.67 μB (S≈2) and an exchange coupling of 16 meV between the π-electrons and the Fe d-states.

Abstract
The preparation of several covalently linked [6]-helicene-porphyrins is reported. A fused [6]-helicene-porphyrin π-extended aromatic system was isolated, the enantiomers separated and the chiroptical properties determined. The oxidative cyclodehydrogenation proved to be very effective for six-membered fused helical systems, but not suited for the formation of five-membered fused systems.

Abstract
Metal complexes of multi-porphyrins and multi-corroles are unique systems that display a host of extremely interesting properties. Availability of free meso and β positions allow formation of different types of directly linked bis-porphyrins giving rise to intriguing optical and electronic properties. While the fields of metalloporphyrin and corroles monomer have seen exponential growth in the last decades, the chemistry of metal complexes of bis-porphyrins and bis-corroles remain rather underexplored. Therefore, the impact of covalent linkages on the optical, electronic, (spectro)electrochemical, magnetic and electrocatalytic activities of metal complexes of bis-porphyrins and -corroles has been summarized in this review article. This article shows that despite the (still) somewhat difficult synthetic access to these molecules, their extremely exciting properties do make a strong case for pursuing research on these classes of compounds.

Abstract
3,7,23,27-Tetrabromo[36]octaphyrin 2 was synthesized as a novel octaphyrin bearing two meso-free positions. Surprisingly, its ZnII and NiII complexation reactions produced a directly fused porphyrin(2.1.1.1) dimer 6, and a meso-α fused N-confused porphyrin (NCP) dimer 7, as the first example of NCP tape, respectively, via transannular C-C bond formation. While 6 exhibits a diatropic ring-current effect owing to the global 36π Möbius aromaticity, 7 shows a paratropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 36π antiaromaticity. In addition, the oxidation of 7 with PbO2 allowed for formation of its two-electron oxidized species 9 that exhibited a diatropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 34π aromaticity. This work has demonstrated that meso-free large expanded porphyrins can be a promising platform to produce novel fused porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Porphyrin nanotapes (Por NTs) are promising structures for their use as molecular wires thanks to a high degree of π‐conjugation, low HOMO—LUMO gaps, and exceptional conductance. Such structures have been prepared in solution, but their on‐surface synthesis remains unreported. Here, meso–meso triply fused Por NTs have been prepared through a two‐step synthesis on Au(111). The diradical character of the on‐surface formed building block PorA2, a phenalenyl π‐extended ZnIIPor, facilitates intermolecular homocoupling and allows for the formation of laterally π‐extended tapes. The structural and electronic properties of individual Por NTs are addressed, both on Au(111) and on a thin insulating NaCl layer, by high‐resolution scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy complemented by DFT calculations. These Por NTs carry one unpaired electron at each end, which leads to magnetic end states. Our study provides a versatile route towards Por NTs and the atomic‐scale characterization of such tapes.

Abstract
Aromatically π-extended porphyrins possess exceptionally intense one-photon (1P) and sometimes two-photon (2P) absorption bands, presenting interest for construction of optical imaging probes and photodynamic agents. Here we investigated how breaking the molecular symmetry affects linear and 2PA properties of π-extended porphyrins. First, we developed the synthesis of porphyrins fused with two phthalimide fragments, termed syn-diarylphthalimidoporphyrins (DAPIP). Second, the photophysical properties of H2, Zn, Pd, and Pt DAPIP were measured and compared to those of fully symmetric tetraarylphthalimidoporphyrins (TAPIP). The data were interpreted using DFT/TDDFT calculations and sum-over-states (SOS) formalism. Overall, the picture of 2PA in DAPIP was found to resemble that in centrosymmetric porphyrins, indicating that symmetry breaking, even as significant as by syn-phthalimido-fusion, induces a relatively small perturbation to the porphyrin electronic structure. Collectively, the compact size, versatile synthesis, high 1PA and 2PA cross sections, and bright luminescence make DAPIP valuable chromophores for construction of imaging probes and other bioapplications.

Abstract
A new family of boron(III) chelates is introduced whereby molecular chirality, confirmed by circular dichroism, is imported during synthesis such that isolation of the diastereoisomers does not require separation procedures. The photophysical properties of two members of the family have been examined: the N,O,O-salicylaldehyde-based derivative shows pronounced intramolecular charge-transfer character in fluid solution and is weakly fluorescent, with a large Stokes shift. The corresponding 2-methylamino-benzaldehyde-derived N,N,O-chelate absorbs and fluoresces in the visible region with a much smaller Stokes shift. Orange fluorescence is also observed for this compound as a cast film. Temperature-dependence studies show that decay of the fluorescent state is weakly activated but emission is less than quantitative at 77 K. Quite rare for boron(III)-based chelates, this derivative undergoes intersystem crossing to form a meta-stable triplet-excited state. X-ray crystal structures are reported for both compounds, along with simulated ECD spectra.

Abstract
3,5-Ethenoporphyrin is a π-extended porphyrin containing a fused ethene unit between the meso- and β-positions, exhibiting unique contribution of macrocyclic antiaromaticity. We have recently reported that its analogue, etheno-fused diporphyrin, underwent thermal [2 + 2] cycloaddition to furnish X-shaped cyclobutane-linked tetraporphyrins. Here we demonstrate that the cyclobutane-ring formation is dynamically redox-active. Namely, the tetraporphyrin underwent two-step four-electron oxidation to afford two etheno-fused diporphyrin dications. The reduction of the resulting dication regenerated the cyclobutane-linked tetraporphyrin. The dication was sufficiently stable to allow its isolation under ambient conditions. The structure of the dication has been confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Importantly, the simultaneous double C-C bond cleavage in the cyclopropane ring in the tetraporphyrin is exceptional among dynamic redox (dyrex) systems to achieve large structural changes, thus offering new insights for the design of novel redox-active functional organic materials for electrochromic dyes, organic batteries, and organic memories.

Abstract
Novel liquid crystalline (LC) molecules were prepared from a dimeric porphyrin tape. A series of metal complexes (1Zn, 1Pd, 1Cu, and 1Ni) and the free-base form (12H) of the porphyrin tape formed a columnar LC phase. Although only the central metal ions were different among these compounds, 1Ni, 12H, and 1Cu aligned homeotropically in a sandwiched glass cell, while 1Zn and 1Pd exhibited a random orientation at a macroscopic scale. The strength of the π-π interactions, tunable by the distortion of the porphyrin cores through metallation, is a key factor for the observed macroscopic orientation difference.

Abstract
Two closely related electrosynthetic approaches are applied for the preparation of novel π-extended tetraphenylporphyrins from malononitrile-appended meso-β di-fused porphyrins, represented as MTPP(MN)2, where TPP = the dianion of tetraphenylporphyrin and MN = malononitrile. The first method involves application of a controlled reducing potential at a platinum electrode in CH2Cl2, while the second proceeds via cyanide anion induced electron transfer. Both methods produced the same decyanated, π-extended di-fused porphyrins represented as MTPP(VCN)2 where VCN = vinyl cyanide and M = H2, NiII, CuII, or ZnII in almost quantitative yields. The final isolated and purified porphyrin products are characterized by a split Soret band ranging from 411-497 nm and two broad intense Q bands. The new π-extended porphyrins are easier to reduce than the parent MTPP or MTPP(MN)2 compounds by 760-800 mV and 180-190 mV, respectively, and possess an electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap ranging from 1.48 to 1.66 V. They are also characterized by two reversible one-electron ring-centered reductions in CH2Cl2 and three reversible one-electron ring-centered reductions in THF. A fourth irreversible reduction is seen in THF at more negative potentials and is assigned to one or two of the fused cyanobenzene rings of the macrocycle.

Abstract
Two-photon excited fluorescent (TPEF) materials are highly desirable for bioimaging applications owing to their unique characteristics of deep-tissue penetration and high spatiotemporal resolution. Herein, by connecting one, two, or three electron-deficient zinc porphyrin units to an electron-rich triazatruxene core via ethynyl π-bridges, conjugated multipolar molecules TAT-(ZnP)n (n=1-3) were developed as TPEF materials for cell imaging. The three new dyes present high fluorescence quantum yields (0.40-0.47) and rationally improved two-photon absorption (TPA) properties. In particular, the peak TPA cross section of TAT-ZnP (436 GM) is significantly larger than that of the ZnP reference (59 GM). The δTPA values of TAT-(ZnP)2 and TAT-(ZnP)3 further increase to 1031 and up to 1496 GM, respectively, indicating the effect of incorporated ZnP units on the TPA properties. The substantial improvement of the TPEF properties is attributed to the formation of π-conjugated quadrapole/octupole molecules and the extension of D-π-A-D systems, which has been rationalized by density function theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, all of the three new dyes display good biocompatibility and preferential targeting ability toward cytomembrane, thus can be superior candidates for TPEF imaging of living cells. Overall, this work demonstrated a promising strategy for the development of porphyrin-based TPEF materials by the construction and extension of D-π-A-D multipolar array.

Abstract
Geodesic nitrogen-containing graphene fragments are interesting candidates for various material applications, but the available synthetic protocols, which need to overcome intrinsic strain energy during the formation of the bowl-shaped skeletons, are often incompatible with heteroatom-embedded structures. Through this mass spectrometry-based gas-phase study, we show by means of collision-induced dissociation experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations, the first evidence for the formation of a porphyrin-embedded conical nanocarbon. The influences of metalation and functionalization of the used tetrabenzoporphyrins have been investigated, which revealed different cyclization efficiencies, different ionization possibilities, and a variation of the dissociation pathway. Our results suggest a stepwise process for HF elimination from the fjord region, which supports a selective pathway towards bent nitrogen-containing graphene fragments.

Abstract
Porphyrins with a fused five-membered ring, such as 7,8-dehydropurpurins, have appeared as an emerging class of unique porphyrinoids. Their altered absorption spectra, relatively short lifetimes of excited states, and small HOMO-LUMO gaps arise from the harmony of the antiaromatic 20π-circuit and the aromatic 18π-circuit. In this regard, the electronic properties of 7,8-dehydropurpurins are expected to be controlled by modulating the contribution of the antiaromatic π-circuit to the whole aromaticity. Here the comparison of pyrrole- and phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins is reported in terms of their aromaticity and physicochemical properties. The spectroscopic investigation revealed the larger contribution of the antiaromatic 24π-circuit in pyrrole-fused 7,8-dehyrdopurpurins than in phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins. The DFT calculations also supported the feasibility of tuning the aromaticity of 7,8-dehydropurpurins by heterole-fused structures. Thus, the introduction of heterole-fused structures into porphyrinoids is a universal strategy to get new insight into aromaticity and their intrinsic properties in cyclic π-conjugated molecules.

Abstract
A concise synthetic method has been developed to access functionalized naphtho[2,3]porphyrins through combining two sequence reactions involving a Heck-electrocyclization-aromatization sequence and a Wittig-Knovenegal sequence. Using this method, mononaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-1), opp-dinaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-2), and push-pull naphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-3) have been prepared. These naphtho[2,3]porphyrins displayed interesting optical and electrochemical properties. Excellent efficiencies of singlet oxygen generation were obtained for these naphtho[2,3]porphyrins.

Abstract
A series of largely π-extended multichromophoric molecules including cross-conjugated, half cross-conjugated, conjugation-interrupted and linearly conjugated systems were synthesized and characterized. These multichromophoric molecular systems revealed interesting structural-property relationships. Bisporphyrin-fused pentacenes Pen-1 b and Pen-2 a showed rich redox chemistry with 7 and 8 observable redox states, respectively. The linearly-conjugated bisporphyrin-fused pentacenes (Pen-1 b and Pen-2 a) possess much narrower HOMO-LUMO gaps (1.65 and 1.42 eV redox, respectively) and higher HOMO energy levels than those of their pentacene analogues (2.23 and 2.01 eV redox, respectively), similar to those of much less stable hexacenes and heptacenes. An estimated half-life of >945 h was obtained for bisporphyrin-fused pentacene Pen-2 a, which is much longer than that of its pentacene analogue (BPE-P, half-life, 33 h).

Abstract
Triple helicene-like semi-fused trimeric NiII porphyrins were constructed by alkyne trimerization of an ethynyl-substituted porphyrin and subsequent three-fold Grignard addition to the formyl groups and acid-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization. The presence of stereogenic sp3 carbons in the central bridge leads to small inter-porphyrin conjugative interactions as was revealed by electrochemical and optical properties. Two diastereomers with stable chiral conformations were optically resolved, and the separated enantiomers displayed considerably intense circular dichroism. Importantly, the chiroptical response of C3 -symmetric helical isomer (|Δϵ|=830 m-1 cm-1 ) is 1.8 times amplified from that of C1 -symmetric one (|Δϵ|=470 m-1 cm-1 ). The observed amplification has been interpreted in terms of different spatial arrangements of the three porphyrins.

Abstract
The oxidation of NiII-porphyrin dimer 10 with PbO2 or MnO2 resulted in the simultaneous implementation of an N-heterocycle-fused bridge and a modified pyrrole to give three unprecedented porphyrin dimers 11, 12, and 13. The reduction of 12 smoothly afforded 14. The structures of these dimers were all unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These dimers show significantly red-shifted absorption bands and perturbed electrochemical properties with a decreasing HOMO-LUMO gap in the order of 14 > 13 > 11 > 12.

Abstract
An intramolecular oxidative aromatic coupling of meso-substituted porphyrins bearing electron-rich aromatics was the focus of investigation. The formation of C–C bond at [Formula: see text]-position for macrocycles bearing dimethoxynaphthalene moiety was achieved. It was established that Fe(ClO[Formula: see text]O induced only single cyclodehydrogenation whereas Fe(OTf)[Formula: see text] had the ability to remove four hydrogens and four electrons forming doubly-fused porphyrin. Both Fe(ClO[Formula: see text]O and Fe(OTf)[Formula: see text] were confirmed superior to FeCl[Formula: see text] as they ensured efficient oxidation process without concomitant chlorination of the products. We have proven that the trans-A[Formula: see text]B[Formula: see text]-porphyrin with two indole moieties do not form any stable products under such reaction conditions. The single fusion with dimethoxynaphthalene moiety has a comparable effect on absorption spectra [Formula: see text]. the Q-band of Ni-complexes is shifted to 650 nm. The Ni-porphyrin fused with two naphthalene units had bathochromically shifted Q-bands to 733 nm.

Abstract
Oxidative aromatic coupling occupies a fundamental place in the modern chemistry of aromatic compounds. It is a method of choice for the assembly of large and bewildering architectures. Considerable effort was also devoted to applications of the Scholl reaction for the synthesis of chiral biphenols and natural products. The ability to form biaryl linkages without any prefunctionalization provides an efficient pathway to many complex structures. Although the chemistry of this process is only now becoming fully understood, this reaction continues to both fascinate and challenge researchers. This is especially true for heterocoupling, that is, oxidative aromatic coupling with the chemoselective formation of a C-C bond between two different arenes. Analysis of the progress achieved in this field since 2013 reveals that many groups have contributed by pushing the boundary of structural possibilities, expanding into surface-assisted (cyclo)dehydrogenation, and developing new reagents.
