Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed enantioselective cross-coupling for the synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphinamides has been developed. The asymmetric alkenylation and arylation of racemic H-phosphinamides using alkenyl and aryl bromides resulted in the formation of P-stereogenic N-phosphinyl compounds with good yields and high enantioselectivities. This method tolerates a variety of functional groups, and its applications are explored through scale-up reactions and product transformations.

Abstract
The increasing importance of azaheterocyclic phosphonates in the agrochemical, synthetic, and medicinal field has provoked an intense search in the development of synthetic routes for obtaining novel members of this family of compounds. This updated review covers methodologies established since 2004, focusing on the synthesis of azaheterocyclic phosphonates, of which the phosphonate moiety is directly substituted onto to the azaheterocyclic structure. Emphasizing recent advances, this review classifies newly developed synthetic approaches according to the ring size and providing information on biological activities whenever available. Furthermore, this review summarizes information on various methods for the formation of C-P bonds, examining sustainable approaches such as the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction, the Michaelis-Becker reaction, the Pudovik reaction, the Hirao coupling, and the Kabachnik-Fields reaction. After analyzing the biological activities and applications of azaheterocyclic phosphonates investigated in recent years, a predominant focus on the evaluation of these compounds as anticancer agents is evident. Furthermore, emerging applications underline the versatility and potential of these compounds, highlighting the need for continued research on synthetic methods to expand this interesting family.

Abstract
Biorefining of lignocellulosic biomass via a lignin first approach delivers a range of products with high oxygen content. Besides pulp, a lignin oil rich in guaiacols and syringols is obtained bearing multiple C(aryl)-OH and C(aryl)-OMe groups, typically named phenolics. Similarly, technical lignin can be used but is generally more difficult to process providing lower yields of monomers. Removal of the hydroxy and methoxy groups in these oxygenated arenes is challenging due to the inherently strong C-O bonds, in addition to the steric and electronic deactivation by adjacent -OH or -OMe groups. Moreover, chemoselective removal of a specific group in the presence of other similar functionalities is non-trivial. Other side-reactions such as ring saturation and transalkylation further complicate the desired reduction process. In this overview, three different selective reduction reactions are considered. Complete hydrodeoxygenation removes both hydroxy and methoxy groups resulting in benzene and alkylated derivatives (BTX type products) which is often complicated by overreduction of the arene ring. Hydrodemethoxylation selectively removes methoxy groups in the presence of hydroxy groups leading to phenol products, while hydrodehydroxylation only removes hydroxy groups without cleavage of methoxy groups giving anisole products. Instead of defunctionalization via reduction transformation of C(aryl)-OH, albeit via an initial derivatization into C(aryl)-OX, into other functionalities is possible and also discussed. In addition to methods applying guaiacols and syringols present in lignin oil as model substrates, special attention is given to methods using mixtures of these compounds obtained from wood/technical lignin. Finally, other important aspects of C-O bond activation with respect to green chemistry are discussed.

Abstract
A water-soluble nickel complex based on amino-β-CD was developed using a facile method and exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the Suzuki reaction in water. This synthesized complex has been characterized using UV-Vis, AAS, TGA, and FT-IR techniques. The easily synthesized novel supramolecular catalysts have been applied as a green and eco-friendly catalyst in the Suzuki coupling for preparing diverse biaryls. This result indicates that using 2.5 mol% of nickel, K2CO3 as the best base, and water as the green solvent are the best reaction conditions. This new catalyst features easy handling, low-cost, mild, and simple protocol. The use of low-cost and accessibility of the reagents, modest conditions, and good yields of products are notable characteristics of this method. Using aqueous media with this catalyst as a proper catalyst makes the presented process a fascinating method compared to most reports. Under mild reaction conditions, this green Ni(II)-β-CD catalyst displayed recyclable behavior seven times with minor loss in its catalytic activity.

Abstract
An efficient method for the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-2,5-dihydrophosphole 1-oxides, a type of five-membered P-containing heterocyclic compound, is presented. The reaction was carried out through a [4C+1P] cyclization of 1,3-dienes with a combination of PBr3 and P(OMe)3 as the P(III) source. To compare with the reported methods, the protocol reported herein not only is much milder and more rapid but also displays a broad substrate scope and affords the products in high yields (50-94%). In addition, the reaction could be reliably scaled up at the gram-scale level and was demonstrated to be a versatile platform for flexible derivatization. Consequently, this method provides a general and reliable way for the synthesis of five-membered phosphole derivatives.

Abstract
Abstract
In Earth matter evolution, the deoxygenation process plays a central role as plant and animal remains, which are composed by highly oxygenated molecules, were gradually deoxygenated into hydrocarbons to give fossil fuels deep in the Earth crust. The understanding of this process is becoming crucial to the entire world and to the sustainable development of mankind. This review provides a brief summary of the extensive deoxygenation research under mild, potentially sustainable conditions. We also summarize some challenges and opportunities for potential deoxygenation reactions in the future.

Abstract
We herein described a visible light induced nickel(II)-catalyzed cross-coupling of secondary phosphine oxides with aryl halides. The Ni(I) species and chlorine atom radical Cl˙ were generated via the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) process of the NiCl2(PPh3)2, which allows nickel(IV)-phosphorus species in situ formation, giving various tertiary phosphine oxides under photocatalyst-free conditions.

Abstract
α-Alkylation of methyldiarylphosphine oxides with (hetero)arylmethyl alcohols was performed under nickel catalysis. Various arylmethyl and heteroarylmethyl alcohols can be used in this transformation. A series of methyldiarylphosphine oxides were alkylated with 30-90% yields. Functional groups on the aromatic rings of methyldiarylphosphine oxides or arylmethyl alcohols including OMe, NMe2, SMe, CF3, Cl, and F groups can be tolerated. The conditions are also suitable for the α-alkylation reaction of dialkyl methylphosphonates.

Abstract
Diverse C-P cross-couplings of arylthianthrenium salts with diarylphosphines producing various triarylphosphines via highly selective C-S bond cleavage are reported. In the absence of catalyst, the reaction of arylthianthrenium salts with diarylphosphines undergoes phosphinative ring opening exclusively via the cleavage of an endocyclic C-S bond of a thianthrene skeleton. The use of a palladacycle catalyst under otherwise the same conditions enables the phosphination via the cleavage of an exocyclic C-S bond with significantly higher speed.

Abstract
The Hirao reaction involving the phosphinoylation or phosphonation of aryl halides by >P(O)H reagents is a P–C bond forming transformation belonging to the recently very hot topic of cross-couplings. The Pd- or Ni-catalyzed variations take place via the usual cycle including oxidative addition, ligand exchange, and reductive elimination. However, according to the literature, the nature of the transition metal catalysts is not unambiguous. In this feature article, the catalysts described for the Pd(OAc)2-promoted cases are summarized, and it is concluded that the “(HOY2P)2Pd(0)” species (Y = aryl, alkoxy) is the real catalyst. In our model, the excess of the >P(O)H reagent served as the P-ligand. During the less studied Ni(II)-catalyzed instances the “(HOY2P)(−OY2P)Ni(II)Cl−” form was found to enter the catalytic cycle. The newest conclusions involving the exact structure of the catalysts, and the mechanism for their formation explored by us were supported by our earlier experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
![]()
It was found by us that the P–C
coupling reaction of >P(O)H
reagents with PhX (X = I and Br) in the presence of NiCl2/Zn as the precursors for the assumed Ni(0) complexant together with
2,2′-bipyridine as the ligand took place only with PhI at 50/70
°C. M06-2X/6-31G(d,p)//PCM(MeCN) calculations
for the reaction of Ph2P(O)H and PhX revealed a favorable
energetics only for the loss of iodide following the oxidative addition
of PhI on the Ni(0) atom. However, the assumed transition states with
Ni(II) formed after P-ligand uptake and deprotonation could not undergo
reductive elimination meaning a “dead-end route”. Hence,
it was assumed that the initial complexation of the remaining Ni2+ ions with 2,2′-bipyridine may move the P–C
coupling forward via a Ni(II) → Ni(IV) transition. This route
was also confirmed by calculations, and this mechanism was justified
by preparative experiments carried out using NiCl2/bipyridine
in the absence of Zn. Hence, the generally accepted Ni(0) →
Ni(II) route was refuted by us, confirming the generality of the Ni(II)
→ N(IV) protocol, either in the presence of bipyridine, or
using the excess of the >P(O)H reagent as the P-ligand.
The results of the calculations on the complex forming ability of
Ni(0) and Ni(II) with 2,2′-bipyridine or the P-reagents were in accord with our mechanistic proposition.

Abstract
Abstract
The Hirao reaction, i.e. the P–C coupling between a bromoarene and a >P(O)H reagent performed in most cases in the presence of a Pd(0) complex incorporating a P-ligand may also be carried out applying a Ni(II) catalyst precursor with or without Zn or Mg as the reducing agent. The Ni catalysts may include P- or N-ligands. B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)//PCM(MeCN) quantum chemical calculations suggested that the mechanism of the NiX2 catalyzed (X=Cl or Br) P–C couplings performed in the absence of a reducing agent, and in the excess of the >P(O)H reagent serving as the P-ligand (via its tautomeric >POH form) is completely different from that of the Pd(OAc)2 promoted version, as no reduction of the Ni(II) occurs. In the two variations mentioned, the active catalyst is the dehydrobrominated species derived from primary complex [(HO)Y2P]2Ni(II)Br2, and the [(HO)Y2P]2Pd(0) complex itself, respectively. Both species undergo temporary oxidation (to “Ni(IV)” and “Pd(II)”, respectively) in the catalytic cycle. During the catalysis with “P2Ni(II)X2”, one of the P-ligands serves the >P(O)H function of the ArP(O)H < product. The consequence of this difference is that in the Ni(II)-catalyzed case, somewhat less >P(O)H-species is needed than in the Pd(0)-promoted instance. Applying 10 % of the Pd(OAc)2 or NiX2 precursor, the optimum quantity of the P-reagent is 1.3 equivalent and, in the first approach, 1.1 equivalent, respectively. Preparative experiments justified the new mechanism explored. The ligation of Ni(II) was also investigated by theoretical calculations. It was proved that the bis-complexation is the most favorable energetically as compared to the mono-, tri- and tetra-ligation.

Abstract
Bromopyridines, bromotiophenes and 3-bromofuran were reacted with diphenylphosphine oxide or diethyl phosphite under microwave irradiation using Pd(OAc)2 as the catalyst precursor together with some excess of the >P(O)H reagent. Hence, there was no need for the usual mono- and bidentate P-ligands. The >P(O)-functionalized heterocycles were obtained in variable (55-95%) yields. The results of our “green” protocol were in most cases better than those of the literature methods.

Abstract
A t-BuONa-mediated C-OH/P(O)-H cross dehydration coupling to produce alkylphosphine oxides is developed. This reaction employed readily available alcohols and P(O)-H compounds as the starting materials, providing an efficient alternative method for constructing sp3 C-P bonds. A reasonable reaction path involving dehydration and subsequent regio-selective hydrophosphorylation of the resulting alkenes was proposed.

Abstract
A radical cation salt-initiated phosphorylation of N-benzylanilines was realized through an aerobic oxidation of the sp3 C-H bond, providing a series of α-aminophosphonates in high yields. An investigation of the reaction scope revealed that this mild catalyst system is superior in good functional group tolerance and high reaction efficiency. The mechanistic study implied that the cleavage of the sp3 C-H bond was involved in the rate-determining step.

Abstract
An efficient Ni(COD)2/dppf catalyzed olefination of Ar-O-TCT as synthetic equivalents of aryl halides is described. Activation of C-O bonds in phenols as readily available compounds was achieved with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT). This method provides practical access to 1,2-disubstituted olefins in high yields and high functional group compatibility.

Abstract
An effective photoredox-mediated tandem phosphorylation/cyclization reaction of diphenylphosphine oxide with three types of radical acceptors leads to P(O)Ph2-containing phenanthridines, isoquinolines, and indolin-2-ones by formation of both C-P and C-C bonds. [Ir(ppy)2(dtbpy)]PF6 (1 mol %) was used as the catalyst, CsF or Cs2CO3 as the base, and K2S2O8 as the oxidant. A series of functional groups can be tolerated at room temperature. Moderate to good yields were generated.
