Abstract
A series of 3,3''- and 4,4''-dimethoxy terphenyls with different second substituents on their ortho-positions have been synthesized and investigated upon the possibility to be oxidatively cyclodehydrogenated to the corresponding triphenylenes under Scholl-type conditions. The experimentally obtained selectivities were supported and explained by quantum chemical calculations and conclusions on the involved mechanisms (acid catalyzed arenium-ion mechanism (AIM) vs radical cation mechanism) were drawn.

Abstract
This article reports quantitative absorption spectra for MoCl5, MoOCl4, and MoO2Cl2 in the vapor phase from 45,500 to 15,500 cm-1 (645 to 220 nm). Spectra are obtained in an ultrahigh purity stainless steel vacuum system by rapidly sampling a range of analyte partial pressures. The short measurement times and the differential absorbance method employed here minimize effects from uncontrolled transients such as window deposits. A detailed analysis of replicate measurements and time-resolved spectra shows generally reproducible spectral response from MoCl5 vapors at 120 °C. The presence of HCl and MoOCl4 impurities in the MoCl5 vapor samples is determined to be unlikely based on the analysis of absorbance-pressure curves and spectral peak fitting. Comparison with MoOCl4 and MoO2Cl2 spectra shows a unique spectral fingerprint for MoCl5 at 28,500 cm-1 providing a convenient means of discriminating between MoCl5 and its oxychlorides in the visible wavelengths. Adsorption behavior of MoCl5 on surfaces is also discussed with particular emphasis on the use of MoCl5 as a reactant in vapor phase thin film deposition processes.

Abstract
By merging electricity with sulfate, the Ritter-type amination of C(sp3)-H bonds is developed in an undivided cell under room temperature. This method features broad substrate generality (71 examples, up to 93% yields), high functional-group compatibility, facile scalability, excellent site-selectivity and mild conditions. Common alkanes and electron-deficient alkylbenzenes are viable substrates. It also provides a straightforward protocol for incorporating C-deuterated acetylamino group into C(sp3)-H sites. Application in the synthesis or modification of pharmaceuticals or their derivatives and gram-scale synthesis demonstrate the practicability of this method. Mechanistic experiments show that sulfate radical anion, formed by electrolysis of sulfate, served as hydrogen atom transfer agent to provide alkyl radical intermediate. This method paves a convenient and flexible pathway for realizing various synthetically useful transformations of C(sp3)-H bonds mediated by sulfate radical anion generated via electrochemistry. The amination of C(sp3)–H bonds is an appealing and challenging task in organic synthesis. Here, by using an electrogenerated sulfate radical an HAT agent, the authors report a practical Ritter-type amination of C(sp3)–H bonds.

Abstract
The naturally occurring colchicine and allocolchicines in the meadow saffron are potentially active ingredients for cancer therapy. A concise protocol for the sustainable synthesis of allocolchicines using up to two electro-organic key transformations is demonstrated. This straightforward synthesis of N-acetylcolchinol methyl ether in a five-step protocol was adopted using protecting groups to enable access to N-acetylcolchinol and the phosphate derivative ZD6126.

Abstract
Rearrangements in Scholl reaction are mostly serendipitous. The design of molecular precursors is what seems to guide the course of rearrangement. This review consolidates different classes of precursors used in Scholl reaction and their accompanying rearrangements that include aryl migration, migration followed by cyclization and skeletal rearrangements involving ring expansion, ring contraction and both, under the reaction conditions. The attempt in collating heretofore-reported examples in this review is to guide designing appropriate precursors to predictably achieve complex molecular structures or nanographenes or defect-nanographenes via rearrangement.

Abstract
Molecular nanocarbons containing heptagonal rings have attracted increasing interest due to their dynamic behavior, electronic properties, aromaticity, and solid-state packing. Heptagon incorporation can not only induce negative curvature within nanocarbon scaffolds, but also confer significantly altered properties through interaction with adjacent non-hexagonal rings. Despite the disclosure of several beautiful examples in recent years, synthetic strategies toward heptagon-embedded molecular nanocarbons remain relatively limited due to the intrinsic challenges of heptagon formation and incorporation into polyarene frameworks. In this Review, recent advances in solution-mediated and surface-assisted synthesis of heptagon-containing molecular nanocarbons, as well as the intriguing properties of these frameworks, will be discussed.

Abstract
A concise synthesis of the alkaloid lythranidine is reported. The strategy exploits the target's local C2 symmetry by adopting a two directional synthetic approach, first in an acyclic environment, then in a cyclic system and finally in a bridged macrocyclic domain. The latter phase of the synthesis, which installs all four stereocenters, involves a thermodynamically controlled, twofold intermolecular/transannular aza-Michael addition and a twofold hydride reduction. The synthesis is one third of the length of the most step-economic previous approach, providing access to gram quantities of the natural product. The broad-spectrum nature of the synthesis is demonstrated through the preparation of three diastereomeric analogues of the natural product.

Abstract
Treatment of [MoCl4(THF)2] with MOtBu (M = Na, Li) does not result in simple metathetic ligand exchange but entails disproportionation with formation of the well-known dinuclear complex [(tBuO)3Mo≡Mo(OtBu)3] and a new paramagnetic compound, [Mo(OtBu)5]. This particular five-coordinate species is the first monomeric, homoleptic, all-oxygen-ligated but non-oxo 4d1 Mo(V) complex known to date; as such, it proves that the dominance of the Mo═O group over (high-valent) molybdenum chemistry can be challenged. [Mo(OtBu)5] was characterized in detail by a combined experimental/computational approach using X-ray diffraction; UV/vis, MCD, IR, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy; and quantum chemistry. The recorded data confirm a Jahn-Teller distortion of the structure, as befitting a d1 species, and show that the complex undergoes Berry pseudorotation. The alkoxide ligands render the disproportionation reaction, leading the formation of [Mo(OtBu)5] to be particularly facile, even though the parent complex [MoCl4(THF)2] itself was also found to be intrinsically unstable; remarkably, this substrate converts into a crystalline material, in which the newly formed Mo(III) and Mo(V) products cohabitate the same unit cell.

Abstract
Oxidative aromatic coupling occupies a fundamental place in the modern chemistry of aromatic compounds. It is a method of choice for the assembly of large and bewildering architectures. Considerable effort was also devoted to applications of the Scholl reaction for the synthesis of chiral biphenols and natural products. The ability to form biaryl linkages without any prefunctionalization provides an efficient pathway to many complex structures. Although the chemistry of this process is only now becoming fully understood, this reaction continues to both fascinate and challenge researchers. This is especially true for heterocoupling, that is, oxidative aromatic coupling with the chemoselective formation of a C-C bond between two different arenes. Analysis of the progress achieved in this field since 2013 reveals that many groups have contributed by pushing the boundary of structural possibilities, expanding into surface-assisted (cyclo)dehydrogenation, and developing new reagents.

Abstract
Arylated products are found in various fields of chemistry and represent essential entities for many applications. Therefore, the formation of this structural feature represents a central issue of contemporary organic synthesis. By the action of electricity the necessity of leaving groups, metal catalysts, stoichiometric oxidizers, or reducing agents can be omitted in part or even completely. The replacement of conventional reagents by sustainable electricity not only will be environmentally benign but also allows significant short cuts in electrochemical synthesis. In addition, this methodology can be considered as inherently safe. The current survey is organized in cathodic and anodic conversions as well as by the number of leaving groups being involved. In some electroconversions the reagents used are regenerated at the electrode, whereas in other electrotransformations free radical sequences are exploited to afford a highly sustainable process. The electrochemical formation of the aryl-substrate bond is discussed for aromatic substrates, heterocycles, other multiple bond systems, and even at saturated carbon substrates. This survey covers most of the seminal work and the advances of the past two decades in this area.

Abstract
A glucose optode measuring the internal oxygen gradient is presented. The multilayer biosensor is composed of (i) analyte-impermeable transparent support, (ii) first oxygen-sensing layer combined with an enzymatic layer, (iii) diffusion barrier, and (iv) second oxygen-sensing layer. To make this design suitable for measurement in subcutaneous tissue, a pair of NIR phosphorescent indicators with very different spectral properties is chosen. Combination of a conventional Pt(II) tetrabenzoporphyrin dye (absorption and emission maxima at 617 and 772 nm, respectively) used in the first layer and a new intramolecularly bridged Pt(II) complex (absorption and emission maxima at 673 and 872 nm, respectively) in the second layer enables efficient separation of both emission signals. This specially designed dye class is accessible via Scholl-reaction from tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin complexes. For the first time, the new optode allows simultaneous glucose and oxygen measurement in a single spot and therefore accurate compensation of oxygen heterogeneities resulting from fluctuations in the tissue. The presented material covers the dynamic ranges from 0 to 150 hPa O2 and from 0 to 360 mg/dL (20 mM) glucose (at 37 °C).

Abstract
The full potential of a high valent metal chloride as both a chlorinating and an oxidative agent was explored by allowing WCl6 to react with N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) α-diimines, in CH2Cl2 at room temperature. These α-diimines underwent unprecedented conversion to quinoxalinium cations via intramolecular C-N coupling.

Abstract
A laterally π-extended dithia[6]helicene 1, representing an interesting saddle-helix hybrid molecule containing an unusual heptagon, has been synthesized by MoCl5-mediated oxidative stitching of tetrakis(thienylphenyl)naphthalene precursor 2 involving reactive-site capping by chlorination and subsequent Pd-mediated dechlorination of tetrachlorinated intermediate 1-Cl4. Highly distorted, wide helical structures of dithia[6]helicenes (1 and 1-Cl4) were clarified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses where heterochiral slipped π-π stacking was displayed in a one-dimensional fashion. Notably, theoretical studies on the thermodynamic behavior of 1 predicted an extraordinarily high isomerization barrier of 49.7 kcal·mol-1, which enabled optical resolution and chiroptical measurements. Electronic structures of these huge helicenes were also examined by photophysical and electrochemical measurements.

Abstract
Transition metal-mediated C-H bond activation and functionalization represent one of the most straightforward and powerful tools in modern organic synthetic chemistry. Bi(hetero)aryls are privileged π-conjugated structural cores in biologically active molecules, organic functional materials, ligands, and organic synthetic intermediates. The oxidative C-H/C-H coupling reactions between two (hetero)arenes through 2-fold C-H activation offer a valuable opportunity for rapid assembly of diverse bi(hetero)aryls and further exploitation of their applications in pharmaceutical and material sciences. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals and applications of transition metal-mediated/catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H coupling reactions between two (hetero)arenes. The substrate scope, limitation, reaction mechanism, regioselectivity, and chemoselectivity, as well as related control strategies of these reactions are discussed. Additionally, the applications of these established methods in the synthesis of natural products and exploitation of new organic functional materials are exemplified. In the last section, a short introduction on oxidant- or Lewis acid-mediated oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions is presented, considering that it is a very powerful method for the construction of biaryl units and polycylic arenes.

Abstract
Interaction of common imines with WCl6 in organic solvents revealed very unusual features in the context of imine chemistry. Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]NH was converted in one pot into the 2-aza-allenium species [Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2]+via N2 release, with [Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]NH2]+ being a co-product. PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]NtBu underwent C-H bond activation resulting in the formation of [C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N] containing derivatives, together with [PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]NHtBu]+.

Abstract
Oxidative C-H coupling reactions were conducted using graphene oxide (GO) as an oxidant. GO showed high selectivity compared with commonly used oxidants such as (diacetoxyiodo) benzene and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone. A mechanistic study revealed that radical species contributed to the reaction. After the oxidative coupling reaction, GO was reduced to form a material that shows electron conductivity and high specific capacitance. Therefore, this system could concurrently achieve two important reactions: C-C bond formation via C-H transformation and production of functionalized graphene.

Abstract
Molybdenum pentachloride is an unusually powerful reagent for the dehydrogenative coupling of arenes. Owing to the high reaction rate using MoCl5, several labile moieties are tolerated in this transformation. The mechanistic course of the reaction was controversially discussed although indications for a single electron transfer as the initial step were found recently. Herein, based on a combined study including synthetic investigations, electrochemical measurements, EPR spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and mass spectrometry, we deduct a highly consistent mechanistic scenario: MoCl5 acts as a one-electron oxidant in the absence of TiCl4 and as two-electron oxidant in the presence of TiCl4, but leads to an over-oxidized intermediate in both cases, which protects it from side reactions. In the course of aqueous work-up the reagent waste (Mo(III/IV) species) acts as reducing agent generating the desired organic C-C coupling product.
