Abstract
The crystal structures of two single-enanti-omer compounds, i.e. diphenyl [(R)-(+)-α-ethyl-benzyl-amido]-phosphate, C21H22NO3P or (C6H5O)2P(O)[NH-(R)-(+)CH(C2H5)(C6H5)] (I), and N-[(R)-(+)-α-ethyl-benz-yl]-P,P-di-phenyl-phosphinic amide, C21H22NOP or (C6H5)2P(O)[NH-R-(+)CH(C2H5)(C6H5)] (II), were studied. The different environments at the phospho-rus atoms, (O)2P(O)(N) and (C)2P(O)(N), allow the P=O/P-N bond strengths to be compared, as well as the N-H⋯O=P hydrogen-bond strengths, and P=O/N-H vibrations. The following characteristics related to diastereotopic C6H5O/C6H5 groups in I/II were considered: geometry parameters, contributions to the crystal packing, solution 13C/1H NMR chemical shifts, conformations, and NMR coupling constants. The phospho-rus-carbon coupling constants nJ PC (n = 2 and 3) in I and mJ PC (m = 1, 2, 3 and 4) in II were evaluated. For a comparative study, chiral analogous structures were retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and their geometries and conformations are discussed.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a synergistic, experimental, and computational study of the self-assembly of N,N'-disubstituted polysulfamides driven by hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between the H-bonding donor and acceptor groups present in repeating sulfamides as a function of the structural design of the polysulfamide backbone. We developed a coarse-grained (CG) polysulfamide model that captures the directionality of H-bonds between the sulfamide groups and used this model in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the self-assembly of these polymers in implicit solvent. The CGMD approach was validated by reproducing experimentally observed trends in the extent of crystallinity for three polysulfamides synthesized with aliphatic and/or aromatic repeating units. After validation of our CGMD approach, we computationally predicted the effect of repeat unit bulkiness, length, and uniformity of segment lengths in the polymers on the extent of orientational and positional order among the self-assembled polysulfamide chains, providing key design principles for tuning the extent of crystallinity in polysulfamides in experiments. Those computational predictions were then experimentally tested through the synthesis and characterization of polysulfamide architectures.

Abstract
G-, V-, and A-series nerve agents are extremely toxic organophosphorus chemical warfare agents (CWAs) that incorporate P═O functional groups. Their colorless, tasteless, and odorless nature makes rapid and efficient detection challenging. Here, we report an unprecedented N-triflyl phosphoric triamide (N-TPT) receptor, which is a new class of triple hydrogen bonding donor molecular sensors for CWA recognition via noncovalent host-guest-type interactions. The highly robust trifurcate structures were designed based on density functional theory (DFT) computations and synthesized from N-triflyl phosphorimidoyl trichloride by simple stepwise processes. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) analysis allowed robust detection of typical CWA simulants, such as dimethyl methylphosphonate. The concentration-dependent QCM profiles were fitted with the Sips isotherm model, revealing that the thermodynamic parameters of the binding behaviors are roughly correlated with the calculated results. Developed N-TPT receptors show higher binding abilities than previously reported receptors and reasonable selectivity over other volatile compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis of high-molecular-weight poly(vinyl ethers) under mild conditions is a significant challenge, since cationic polymerization reactions are highly sensitive to chain-transfer and termination events. We identified a novel and highly effective hydrogen bond donor (HBD)-organic acid pair that can facilitate controlled cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers under ambient conditions with excellent monomer compatibility. Poly(vinyl ethers) of molar masses exceeding 50 kg mol-1 can be produced within 1 h without elaborate reagent purification. Modification of the HBD structure allowed tuning of the polymerization rate, while DFT calculations helped elucidate crucial intermolecular interactions between the HBD, organic acid, and polymer chain end.

Abstract
We have synthesized a completely new family of acyclic trimeric cyclodiphosphazane compounds comprising NH, Ni Pr, Nt Bu and NPh bridging groups. In addition, the first NH-bridged acyclic dimeric cyclophosphazane has been produced. The trimeric species display highly tuneable characteristics so that the distance between the terminal N(H)R moieties can be readily modulated by the steric bulk present in the bridging groups (ranging from ≈6 to ≈10 Å). Moreover, these species exhibit pronounced topological changes when a weak non-bonding NH⋅⋅⋅π aryl interaction is introduced. Finally, the NH-bridged chloride binding affinities have been calculated and benchmarked along with the existing experimental data available for monomeric cyclodiphosphazanes. Our results underscore these species as promising hydrogen bond donors for supramolecular host-guest applications.

Abstract
As hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors, N,N'-disubstituted sulfamides have been used in a range of applications from medicinal chemistry to anion-binding catalysis. However, compared to ureas or thioureas, the utilization of this unique moiety remains marginal, in part because of a lack of general synthetic methods to access unsymmetrical sulfamides. Specifically, polysulfamides are a virtually unknown type of polymer despite their potential utility in non-covalent dynamic networks, an intense area of research in materials science. We report herein a practical and efficient process to prepare unsymmetrical sulfamides via Sulfur(vi)-Fluoride Exchange (SuFEx) click chemistry. This process was then applied to synthesize polysulfamides. Thermal analysis showed that this family of polymers possess high thermal stability and tunable glass transition temperatures. Finally, hydrolysis studies indicated that aromatic polysulfamides could be recycled back to their constituting monomers at the end of their life cycle.

Abstract
Anion binding by receptor molecules is a central field of modern chemistry which impacts areas of catalysis as well as biological and materials chemistry. As binding often requires high chemical stability under aerobic and aqueous conditions for practical applications, carbon-based anion receptors have dominated this field, with main group element analogues receiving far less attention. The recent observation that the air- and moisture-stable amino-cyclophosph(V)azanes of the type [RN(E)P(μ-NR)]2 (E = O, S, Se) can exhibit halide binding that is competitive with topologically related organic receptors (such as squaramides and thioureas) has motivated us here to explore how the binding properties of phosphazane receptors can be enhanced further. Coordination of transition metals by the two P,N metal coordination sites of the phosph(III)azane dimer [(2-py)NHP(μ-NtBu)]2 not only activates the receptor for anion binding (by fixing the optimum exo-exo conformation and polarizing the endocyclic N-H substituents) but also stabilizes the P2N2 ring to hydrolysis and oxidation. We show how the binding properties of these receptors can be modulated by the coordinated metal fragments and that they can bind chloride 1 to 2 orders of magnitude stronger than the related squaramides and thioureas. These features can be utilized in anion transport through phospholipid bilayers under aqueous conditions for which transport can be improved by 1 order of magnitude compared to the previous best phosphazane and thiourea transporters. This study demonstrates how careful design of inorganic systems can result in potent supramolecular functionality, beyond that observed for organic counterparts.

Abstract
Over the past decade, there has been a renewed interest in the use of transition metal polypyridyl complexes as photoredox catalysts for a variety of innovative synthetic applications. Many derivatives of these complexes are known, and the effect of ligand modifications on their efficacy as photoredox catalysts has been the subject of extensive, systematic investigation. However, the influence of the photocatalyst counteranion has received little attention, despite the fact that these complexes are generally cationic in nature. Herein, we demonstrate that counteranion effects exert a surprising, dramatic impact on the rate of a representative photocatalytic radical cation Diels-Alder reaction. A detailed analysis reveals that counteranion identity impacts multiple aspects of the reaction mechanism. Most notably, photocatalysts with more noncoordinating counteranions yield a more powerful triplet excited state oxidant and longer radical cation chain length. It is proposed that this counteranion effect arises from Coulombic ion-pairing interactions between the counteranion and both the cationic photoredox catalyst and the radical cation intermediate, respectively. The comparatively slower rate of reaction with coordinating counteranions can be rescued by using hydrogen-bonding anion binders that attenuate deleterious ion-pairing interactions. These results demonstrate the importance of counteranion identity as a variable in the design and optimization of photoredox transformations and suggest a novel strategy for the optimization of organic reactions using this class of transition metal photocatalysts.

Abstract
In the structure of 2-(4-chloroanilino)-1,3,2λ4-diazaphosphol-2-one, C12H11ClN3OP, each molecule is connected with four neighbouring molecules through (N-H)2...O hydrogen bonds. These hydrogen bonds form a tubular arrangement along the [001] direction built from R33(12) and R43(14) hydrogen-bond ring motifs, combined with a C(4) chain motif. The hole constructed in the tubular architecture includes a 12-atom arrangement (three P, three N, three O and three H atoms) belonging to three adjacent molecules hydrogen bonded to each other. One of the N-H groups of the diazaphosphole ring, not co-operating in classical hydrogen bonding, takes part in an N-H...π interaction. This interaction occurs within the tubular array and does not change the dimension of the hydrogen-bond pattern. The energies of the N-H...O and N-H...π hydrogen bonds were studied by NBO (natural bond orbital) analysis, using the experimental hydrogen-bonded cluster of molecules as the input file for the chemical calculations. In the 1H NMR experiment, the nitrogen-bound proton of the diazaphosphole ring has a high value of 17.2 Hz for the 2JH-P coupling constant.

Abstract
![]()
A spectrophotometric sensor is described
that provides a useful
assessment of the LUMO-lowering provided by catalysts in Diels–Alder
and Friedel–Crafts reactions. A broad range of 33 hydrogen-bonding
catalysts was assessed with the sensor, and the relative rates in
the above reactions spanned 5 orders of magnitude as determined via 1H- and 2H NMR spectroscopic measurements, respectively.
The differences between the maximum wavelength shift of the sensor
with and without catalyst (Δλmax–1) were found to correlate linearly with ln(krel) values for both reactions, even though the substrate feature
that interacts with the catalyst differs significantly (ketone vs
nitro). The sensor provides an assessment of both the inherent
reactivity of a catalyst architecture as well as the sensitivity of the reaction to changes within an architecture.
In contrast, catalyst pKa values are a
poor measure of reactivity, although correlations have been identified
within catalyst classes.

Abstract
We describe the molecular parameters governing the transmembrane activity of imidazolium-functionalized anion transporters and present a detailed mechanistic study. These ionophores adopt a mobile-carrier mechanism for short methyl and butyl chains, a combined mobile-carrier/transmembrane-pore mechanism for octyl and dodecyl chains, and form transmembrane aggregates for hexadecyl chains.

Abstract
Allylic alcohols undergo transposition reactions in the presence of Re2 O7 whereby the equilibrium can be dictated by trapping one isomer with a pendent electrophile. Additional ionization can occur when the trapping group is an aldehyde or ketone, thus leading to cyclic oxocarbenium ion formation. Terminating the process through bimolecular nucleophilic addition into the intermediate provides a versatile method for the synthesis of diverse oxygen-containing heterocycles. Understanding the relative rates of the steps in the sequence leads to the design of reactions which create multiple stereocenters with good to excellent levels of control.

Abstract
Ten novel hydrogen-bonding catalysts based on open-chain PV-amides of BINOL and chinchona alkaloids as well as three catalysts based on rigid cis-PV-cyclodiphosphazane amides of N1,N1-dimethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine have been developed. Employed in the asymmetric Michael addition of 2-hydroxynaphthoquinone to β-nitrostyrene, the open-chain 9-epi-aminochinchona-based phosphorus amides show a high catalytic activity with almost quantitative yields of up to 98% and enantiomeric excesses of up to 51%. The cyclodiphosphazane catalysts show the same high activity and give improved enantiomeric excesses of up to 75%, thus representing the first successful application of a cyclodiphosphazane in enantioselective organocatalysis. DFT computations reveal high hydrogen-bonding strengths of cyclodiphosphazane PV-amides compared to urea-based catalysts. Experimental results and computations on the enantiodetermining step with cis-cyclodiphosphazane 14a suggest a strong bidentate H-bond activation of the nitrostyrene substrate by the catalyst.
