Abstract
Materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on transition metal complexes are currently gathering significant attention due to their technological potential. Their application extends beyond optoelectronics, in particular organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and include also photocatalysis, sensing, and X-ray scintillators. From the perspective of sustainability, earth-abundant metal centers are preferred to rarer second- and third-transition series elements, thus determining a reduction in costs and toxicity but without compromising the overall performances. This review offers an overview of earth-abundant transition metal complexes exhibiting TADF and their application as photoconversion materials. Particular attention is devoted to the types of ligands employed, helping in the design of novel systems with enhanced TADF properties.

Abstract
We have utilised the 4,6-di-tert-butyl resorcinol bis(diphenylphosphinite) (POCOP) ligand for exploring its coordination ability towards group 11 metal centres. The treatment of the bidentate ligand 1 with various coinage metal precursors afforded a wide range of structurally diverse complexes 2-12, depending upon the metal precursors used. This furnishes several multinuclear Cu(I) complexes with dimeric (2) and tetrameric cores (3, 4, and 5). The tetrameric stairstep complex 4 shows thermochromic behaviour, whereas the dimeric complex 2 and tetrameric complex 3 show luminescence properties at cryogenic temperatures. Interestingly, the halide substitution reaction of the dimeric complex 2 with KPPh2 produces a unique mixed phosphine-based tetrameric Cu(I) complex, 5. Treatment of the POCOP ligand with [CuBF4(CH3CN)4] in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine afforded heteroleptic complex 6, consisting of tri- and tetra-coordinated cationic Cu(I) centres. Furthermore, we could also isolate cubane (8) and stairstep (9) complexes of Ag(I). The cationic Au(I) complex (12) was obtained from the dinuclear Au(I) complex of POCOP, 11. Complex 12 revealed the presence of a strong intramolecular aurophilic interaction with an Au⋯Au bond distance of 3.1143(9) Å. Subsequently, the photophysical properties of these complexes have been studied. All the complexes were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, routine NMR techniques, and mass spectroscopy.

Abstract
A series of four novel heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes, bearing bis(1H-indazol-1-yl)methane analogues as N,N ligands and DPEPhos as the P,P ligand, were synthesised in high yields under mild conditions and characterised by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. In addition, the position of the carboxymethyl substituent in the complexes and its effect on the electrochemical and photophysical behaviour was evaluated. As expected, the homoleptic copper (I) complexes with the N,N ligands showed air instability. In contrast, the obtained heteroleptic complexes were air- and water-stable in solid and solution. All complexes displayed green-yellow luminescence in CH2Cl2 at room temperature due to ligand-centred (LC) phosphorescence in the case of the Cu(I) complex with an unsubstituted N,N ligand and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) phosphorescence for the carboxymethyl-substituted complexes. Interestingly, proper substitution of the bis(1H-indazol-1-yl)methane ligand enabled the achievement of a remarkable luminescent yield (2.5%) in solution, showcasing the great potential of this novel class of copper(I) complexes for potential applications in luminescent devices and/or photocatalysis.

Abstract
The reaction of a triazole ligand, 2-(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (L1), with 2-bromopyridine afforded three new ligands, 2,2'-(1H-1,2,3-triazole-1,4-diyl)dipyridine (L2), 2,2'-(2H-1,2,3-triazole-2,4-diyl)dipyridine (L3) and 2,2'-(1H-1,2,3-triazole-1,5-diyl)dipyridine (L4). A series of luminescent mononuclear copper(I) complexes of these ligands [Cu(Ln)(P^P)](ClO4) [n = 1, P^P = (PPh3)2 (1); n = 1, P^P = POP (2); n = 2, P^P = (PPh3)2 (3); n = 2, P^P = POP (4); n = 3, P^P = (PPh3)2 (5); n = 3, P^P = POP (6); n = 4, P^P = (PPh3)2 (9); n = 4, P^P = POP (10)] have been obtained from the reaction of Ln with [Cu(MeCN)4]ClO4 in the presence of PPh3 and POP. L3 was also found to form dinuclear compounds [Cu2(L3)(PPh3)4](ClO4)2 (7) and [Cu2(L3)(POP)2](ClO4)2 (8). All of the Cu(I) compounds have been characterized by IR, UV/vis, CV, 1H NMR, and 31P{1H} NMR. The molecular structures of 1-3, 5, and 7 have been further determined by X-ray crystallography. In CH2Cl2 solutions, these Cu(I) complexes exhibit tunable green to orange emissions (563-621 nm) upon excitation at λex = 380 nm. In the solid state, these complexes show intense emissions and it is interesting to note that 1 and 3 are blue-light emitters. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the lowest energy electronic transition associated with these complexes predominantly originates from metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions (MLCT).

Abstract
Photocatalyzed and photosensitized chemical processes have seen growing interest recently and have become among the most active areas of chemical research, notably due to their applications in fields such as medicine, chemical synthesis, material science or environmental chemistry. Among all homogeneous catalytic systems reported to date, photoactive copper(I) complexes have been shown to be especially attractive, not only as alternative to noble metal complexes, and have been extensively studied and utilized recently. They are at the core of this review article which is divided into two main sections. The first one focuses on an exhaustive and comprehensive overview of the structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties of mononuclear copper(I) complexes, typical examples highlighting the most critical structural parameters and their impact on the properties being presented to enlighten future design of photoactive copper(I) complexes. The second section is devoted to their main areas of application (photoredox catalysis of organic reactions and polymerization, hydrogen production, photoreduction of carbon dioxide and dye-sensitized solar cells), illustrating their progression from early systems to the current state-of-the-art and showcasing how some limitations of photoactive copper(I) complexes can be overcome with their high versatility.

Abstract
Cu(I) complexes have received widespread attention as a promising alternative to traditional noble-metal complexes. Herein, we systematically study the properties of Cu(I) complexes from homo- to hetero-ligands, and found the following: (1) hetero-ligands are beneficial to regulate phosphorescent efficiency; (2) when the hetero-ligands in a tetracoordinated Cu(I) complex are 1:1, the ligands coordinate along the dx2-y2 direction of Cu(I) ion, which can observably suppress structural deformation; (3) unlike the P^P ligand, the N^N ligand can enhance the participation of Cu(I) during the transition process; (4) the addition of an appropriate amount of P^P ligand can effectively raise the energy level of HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital), enhance the proportion of LLCT (ligand-ligand charge transfer), and thereby increase the available singlet emission transition moments which can be borrowed, thus promoting the radiative decay process. As a result, this work provides a detailed understanding of the effects of different ligands in Cu(I) complexes, and provides a valuable reference and theoretical basis for regulating and designing the phosphorescent properties of Cu(I) complexes in the future.

Abstract
A series of neutral luminescent bis(phosphine) Cu(i) complexes of pyridyl-tetrazolate ligands (L1-L3) with the general formula [CuI(L n )(P^P)] (1-6) were synthesized, which have been well characterized by IR, UV/vis, CV, 1H NMR and 31P NMR. For comparison, an Ag(i) complex [AgI(L2)(PPh3)2] (7) was also synthesized. The crystal structures of 2 and 7 have been further determined by X-ray crystallography. All these Cu(i) compounds show bright luminescence in the solid state with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) in the range of 25.8% to 85.0%. More interestingly, the Cu(i) complexes bearing an additional dangling aromatic ring on the diimine ligands exhibit enhanced luminescent performance in various solutions and their PLQYs are significantly higher than those of related Cu(i) complexes without steric protection. Compared with 1, the Cu(i) complexes with an additional dangling tetrazole moiety show a significant solvatochromic effect, which is uncommon for luminescent Cu(i) complexes. Moreover, [CuI(L2)(PPh3)2] (2) was further designed as an OLED material, which showed a high external quantum efficiency of 7.7%.

Abstract
An in-depth study on a stimuli-responsive tetranuclear cuprous luminescent complex is reported and gives new insights into the origin and possible use of the observed stimuli-responsive luminescence. Its crystalline polymorphs with two different shapes are obtained by using different crystallization solvents and show distinct emissions, with one being blue emissive and the other being yellow emissive. Upon grinding, only the blue-emitting polymorph has a marked change in the emission color from blue to yellow, and its ground sample exhibits a yellow emission similar to that of the yellow-emitting polymorph. Interestingly, the yellow-emitting polymorph after exposure to acetone vapor can emit a blue emission and display luminescence mechanochromism similar to that of the blue-emitting polymorph. Single-crystal structural analyses of the two different polymorphs reveal the relationship between the mechanochromic luminescence and the geometrical configuration of the {Cu(μ-dppm)2Cu} unit and intramolecular "pyridyl/phenyl" π···π interactions, supported as well by their PXRD, FT-IR, TGA, and PL studies in various states and by TD-DFT analyses. The results demonstrate the different roles of switchable intramolecular π···π interactions and the geometrical configuration of the {Cu(μ-dppm)2Cu} unit in this stimuli-responsive luminescence and potential applications of such stimuli-responsive luminescence in optical sensing and anticounterfeiting encryption technologies and deepen the understanding of such stimuli-responsive luminescence originating from switchable intramolecular π···π interactions. In addition, it is clearly suggested that the rational utilization of switchable intramolecular π···π interactions is a feasible route for developing stimuli-responsive intelligent luminescent materials and devices.

Abstract
A new family of eighteen Cu(i) complexes of the general formula [Cu(PP)(LL)][BF4], where PP is a phosphane ligand and LL represents an N,O-heteroaromatic bidentate ligand, has been synthesized and fully characterized by classical analytical and spectroscopic methods. Five complexes of this series were also characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was evaluated in breast (MCF7) and prostate (LNCap) human cancer cells and in a normal prostate cell line (RWPE). In general, all compounds showed higher cytotoxicity for the prostate cancer cells than for the breast cells, with IC50 values in the range 0.2-2 μM after 24 h of treatment. The most cytotoxic compound, [Cu(dppe)(2-ap)][BF4] (16), where dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphano) ethane and 2-ap = 2-acetylpyridine, showed a high level of cellular internalization, generation of intracellular ROS and activation of the cell death mechanism via apoptosis/necrosis. Owing to its high cytotoxic activity for LNCap cells, being 70-fold higher than that for normal prostate cells (RWPE), complex (16) was found to be the most promising for further research in prostate cancer models.

Abstract
A new series of luminescent mononuclear CuI complexes with functionalized 6-cyano-2,2′-bipyridine chelating ligands, [Cu(xantphos)(cbpy)]ClO4 (1), [Cu(xantphos)(4,4’-Me2cbpy)]ClO4·CH2Cl2·H2O (2), and [Cu(POP)(cbpy)]ClO4·CH2Cl2 (3) (xantphos=4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene; POP=bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether; 4,4’-Me2cbpy=4,4’-dimethyl-6-cyano-2,2′-bipyridine; cbpy=6-cyano-2,2′-bipyridine) have been successfully prepared, and their structures and photophysical properties are investigated. Single crystal structures of the three complexes reveal a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry around the CuI centres with the P atoms of diphosphane ligands and N donors of 2,2′-bipyridine ring. Luminescence measurements indicate that these CuI complexes display good emission properties both in the solution and solid states at room temperature, which can be well modulated through modifying the structure of 6-cyano-2,2′-bipyridine. It is shown that the introduction of two electron-donating methyl groups at the 4,4’-positions of the 6-cyano-2,2′-bipyridine is favourable to enhance the luminescence properties of the CuI complexes.

Abstract
Heteroleptic [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] complexes, where N^N is a halo-substituted 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and P^P is either bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether (POP) or 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (xantphos) have been synthesized and investigated. To stabilize the tetrahedral geometry of the copper(i) complexes, the steric demands of the bpy ligands have been increased by introducing 6- or 6,6'-halo-substituents in 6,6'-dichloro-2,2'-bipyridine (6,6'-Cl2bpy), 6-bromo-2,2'-bipyridine (6-Brbpy) and 6,6'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine (6,6'-Br2bpy). The solid-state structures of [Cu(POP)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6]·CH2Cl2, [Cu(POP)(6-Brbpy)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(6-Brbpy)][PF6]·0.7Et2O obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction are described including the pressure dependence of the structure of [Cu(POP)(6-Brbpy)][PF6]. The copper(i) complexes with either POP or xantphos and 6,6'-Cl2bpy, 6-Brbpy and 6,6'-Br2bpy are orange-to-red emitters in solution and yellow-to-orange emitters in the solid state, and their electrochemical and photophysical properties have been evaluated with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The emission properties are strongly influenced by the substitution pattern that largely affects the geometry of the emitting triplet state. [Cu(POP)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6] show photoluminescence quantum yields of 15 and 17%, respectively, in the solid state, and these compounds were tested as luminophores in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The devices exhibit orange electroluminescence and very short turn-on times (<5 to 12 s). Maximum luminance values of 121 and 259 cd m-2 for [Cu(POP)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(6,6'-Cl2bpy)][PF6], respectively, were achieved at an average current density of 100 A m-2. External quantum efficiencies of 1.2% were recorded for both complexes.

Abstract
The three-fold bridged dinuclear Cu(I) complex Cu2(μ-I)2(1 N- n-butyl-5-diphenyl-phosphino-1,2,4-triazole)3, Cu2I2(P^N)3, shows bright thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) as well as phosphorescence at ambient temperature with a total quantum yield of 85% at an emission decay time of 7 μs. The singlet (S1)-triplet (T1) energy gap is as small as only 430 cm-1 (53 meV). Spin-orbit coupling induces a short-lived phosphorescence with a decay time of 52 μs ( T = 77 K) and a distinct zero-field splitting (ZFS) of T1 into substates by ∼2.5 cm-1 (0.3 meV). Below T ≈ 10 K, effects of spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) are observed and agree with the size of ZFS. According to the combined phosphorescence and TADF, the overall emission decay time is reduced by ∼13% as compared to the TADF-only process. The compound may potentially be applied in solution-processed OLEDs, exploiting both the singlet and triplet harvesting mechanisms.

Stabilisation effects of phosphane ligands in the homogeneous approach of sunlight induced hydrogen production. Faraday Discuss 2017; 198:211-233. Abstract
Most of the systems for photochemical hydrogen production are not stable and suffer from decomposition. With bis(bidentate) tetraphosphane ligands the stability increases enormously, up to more than 1000 h. This stability was achieved with a system containing osmium(ii) as a light harvesting antenna and palladium(ii) as a water reduction catalyst connected with a bis(bidentate) phosphane ligand in one molecule with the chemical formula [Os(bpy)2(dppcb)Pd(dppm)](PF6)4. With the help of electrochemical measurements as well as photophysical data and its single crystal X-ray structure, the electron transfer between the two active metal centres (light harvesting antenna, water reduction catalyst) was analysed. The distance between the two active metal centres was determined to be 7.396(1) Å. In a noble metal free combination of a copper based photosensitiser and a cobalt diimine-dioxime complex as water reduction catalyst a further stabilisation effect by the phosphane ligands is observed. With the help of triethylamine as a sacrificial donor in the presence of different monophosphane ligands it was possible to produce hydrogen with a turnover number of 1176. This completely novel combination is also able to produce hydrogen in a wide pH-range from pH = 7.0 to 12.5 with the maximum production at pH = 11.0. The influence of monophosphane ligands with different Tolman cone angles was investigated. Monophosphane ligands with a large Tolman cone angle (>160°) could not stabilise the intermediate of the cobalt based water reduction catalyst and so the turnover number is lower than for systems with an addition of monophosphane ligands with a Tolman cone angle smaller than 160°. The role of the monophosphane ligand during sunlight-induced hydrogen production was analysed and these results were confirmed with DFT calculations. Furthermore the crystal structures of two important Co(i) intermediates, which are the catalytic active species during the catalytic pathway, were obtained. The exchange of PPh3 with other tertiary phosphane ligands can have a major impact on the activity, depending on the coordination properties. By an exchange of monophosphane ligands with functionalised phosphane ligands (hybrid ligands) the hydrogen production was raised 2.17 times.

Abstract
Luminescent CuI complexes have emerged as promising substitutes for phosphorescent emitters based on Ir, Pt and Os due to their abundance and low cost. The title heteroleptic cuprous complex, [9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-9H-xanthene-κ2P,P](2-methylquinolin-8-ol-κ2N,O)copper(I) hexafluorophosphate, [Cu(C10H9NO)(C39H32OP2)]PF6, conventionally abbreviated as [Cu(Xantphos)(8-HOXQ)]PF6, where Xantphos is the chelating diphosphine ligand 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-9H-xanthene and 8-HOXQ is the N,O-chelating ligand 2-methylquinolin-8-ol that remains protonated at the hydroxy O atom, is described. In this complex, the asymmetric unit consists of a hexafluorophosphate anion and a whole mononuclear cation, where the CuI atom is coordinated by two P atoms from the Xantphos ligand and by the N and O atoms from the 8-HOXQ ligand, giving rise to a tetrahedral CuP2NO coordination geometry. The electronic absorption and photoluminescence properties of this complex have been studied on as-synthesized samples, whose purity had been determined by powder X-ray diffraction. In the detailed TD-DFT (time-dependent density functional theory) studies, the yellow emission appears to be derived from the inter-ligand charge transfer and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (M+L')→LCT excited state (LCT is ligand charge transfer).

Abstract
The possibility of using less expensive and nontoxic metals, such as copper, as substitutes for more expensive heavy metals in the synthesis of new transition-metal complexes to be used as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has stimulated research in this field. The novel photoluminescent copper(I) complex bis(triphenylphosphane-κP)[trans-(±)-2,4,5-tris(pyridin-2-yl)-2-imidazoline-κ2

The complex showed interesting photophysical properties, which were studied experimentally in solution and in the solid state by UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with dichloromethane as solvent reproduced reasonably well the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the title compound.

Abstract
Neutral green-emitting four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes with general formula POPCu(NN), where POP = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether and NN = substituted 2-pyridine-1,2,4-triazole ligands, were synthesized. The crystal structures of (POPCuMeCN)(+)(PF6)(-) (1), POPCuPhPtp (2a, PhPtp = 2-(5-phenyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine), and POPCu(3,5-2FPhPtp) (2d, 3,5-2FPhPtp = 2-(5-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-2H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridine) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The electronic and photophysical properties of the complexes were examined by UV-vis, steady-state, and time-resolved spectroscopy. At room temperature, weak emission was observed in solution, while in the solid state, all complexes exhibit intense green emission with quantum yield up to 0.54. The electronic and photophysical properties were further supported by calculation performed at the (time-dependent) density functional theory level. One of the complexes was also tested as dopant in electroluminescent devices.

Abstract
Molecules that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) represent a very promising emitter class for application in electroluminescent devices since all electrically generated excitons can be transferred into light according to the singlet harvesting mechanism. Cu(I) compounds are an important class of TADF emitters. In this contribution, we want to give a deeper insight into the photophysical properties of this material class and demonstrate how the emission properties depend on molecular and host rigidity. Moreover, we show that with molecular optimization a significant improvement of selected emission properties can be achieved. From the discussed materials, we select one specific dinuclear complex, for which the two Cu(I) centers are four-fold bridged to fabricate an organic light emitting diode (OLED). This device shows the highest efficiency (of 23 % external quantum efficiency) reported so far for OLEDs based on Cu(I) emitters.
