Viscosity & SO2-sensitive dual colorimetric effect fluorescent sensor enabled imaging detection within plant onion and biological system

The biological microenvironment includes important parameters such as viscosity, polarity, temperature, oxygen content and pH. In particular, abnormal cell viscosity is associated with the development of major diseases. Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) serves not only as an essential atmospheric pollutant but also an influential signalling molecule in biological cells, predisposing individuals to increased respiratory disease. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe CouCN-V&S with dual response to micro environmental viscosity and SO₂. The probe monitored viscosity and SO₂ separately through dual emission channels with a difference of 135 nm. The probe responded sensitively to SO₂ (<1s) and exhibited satisfactory immunity to interference and pH stability. The probe was successfully applied to imaging cellular, intra-zebrafish viscosity and SO₂ changes. Interestingly, we took onion epidermal cells as model and explored the capability of probe CouCN-V&S to image SO₂ in plant cells for the first time.

Rare earth upconversion luminescent composite based on energy transfer for specific and sensitive detection of cysteine

Abnormal levels of thiols in cysteine (Cys) have been shown to be associated with growth retardation, skin lesions, and neurotoxicity in humans. Herein, we designed and synthesized a rare earth upconversion luminescent (UCL) nanocomposite probe UCNP-PEG-NOF1 for the UCL detection of Cys using NOF1 developed by our group as a Cys probe. The core structure of rare earth nanoparticles can absorb light at 980 nm and convert it into visible light. The detection principle of Cys was based on the change in absorption peak before and after the reaction between NOF1 and Cys, as well as the change in UCL intensity. The rare earth nanocomposite in the probe could be excited by near-infrared light and had low background fluorescence and strong penetration ability; thus, the probe was successfully employed to specifically and sensitively detect Cys with a low background signal. Overall, the developed UCNP-PEG-NOF1 probe had good selectivity and high sensitivity for Cys; its detection limit was as low as 83 nM.

White-Light-Emitting Supramolecular Polymer Gel Based on β-CD and NDI Host-Guest Inclusion Complex

Supramolecular polymer formed by non-covalent interactions between complementary building blocks entraps solvents and develops supramolecular polymer gel. A supramolecular polymer gel was prepared by the heating-cooling cycle of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and naphthalenedimide (NDI) solution in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The host-guest inclusion complex of β-CD and NDI 1 containing dodecyl amine forms the supramolecular polymer and gel in DMF. However, β-CD and NDI 2, having glutamic acid, fail to form the supramolecular polymer and gel under the same condition. X-ray crystallography shows that the alkyl chains of NDI 1 are complementary to the hydrophobic cavity of the two β-CD units. From rheology, the storage modulus was approximately 1.5 orders of magnitude larger than the loss modulus, which indicates the physical crosslink and elastic nature of the thermo-responsive gel. FE-SEM images of the supramolecular polymer gel exhibit flake-like morphology and a dense flake network. The flakes developed from the assembly of smaller rods. Photophysical studies show that the host-guest complex formation and gelation have significantly enhanced emission intensity with a new hump at 550 nm. Upon excitation by a 366 nm UV-light, NDI 1 and β-CD gel in DMF shows white light emission. The gel has the potential for the fabrication of organic electronic devices.

Delayed Fluorescence, Room Temperature Phosphorescence, and Mechanofluorochromic Naphthalimides: Differential Imaging of Normoxia and Hypoxia Live Cancer Cells

We study the effect of molecular conformation on the electronic coupling between the donor amines and acceptor 1,8-naphthalimide (NPI) in a series of D-A systems 1-4 (A = NPI; D = phenothiazine, phenoxazine, carbazole, diphenylamine, respectively, for 1, 2, 3, and 4). Weakly coupled systems show dual emission in the solution state, while strongly coupled systems show single emission bands. The energy of transitions and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield are sensitive to the molecular conformation and donor strength. These compounds show delayed emission in the solutions and aggregated state and phosphorescence in the solid state. Compounds 3 and 4 with weak donors exhibit intermolecular slipped π···π interactions in the solid state and consequently exhibit dual (intra- and inter-) phosphorescence at low temperature. Steady state and time-resolved PL studies at variable temperature together with computational and crystal structure analysis were used to rationalize the optical properties of these compounds. The delayed emission of these compounds is sensitive to molecular oxygen; accordingly, these molecules are utilized for differential imaging of normoxia and hypoxia cancer cells.

Supramolecular Assembly-Driven Color-Tuning and White-Light Emission Based on Crown-Ether-Functionalized Dihydrophenazine

The development of color-tunable white-light-emitting systems is significant for artificial smart materials. Recently, a set of conformational dependent fluorophores N,N'-diaryl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines (DPACs) have been developed with unique photoluminescence mechanism vibration-induced emission (VIE). DPACs can emit intrinsical blue emission at a bent excited state and abnormal orange-red emission at a planar excited state, which are due to the varied π-conjugation via excited-state configuration transformation along the N-N' axis from bent to planar form. Herein, a novel VIE-active compound DPAC-[B15C5]₂ is designed and synthesized with two wings of benzo-15-crown-5. The excited-state vibration of the DPAC moiety can be modulated by tuning the supramolecular assembly and disassembly via chelation competition of K⁺ between 15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6, and hence, a wide-color-tuning emission is achieved from blue to orange-red including white. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments were conducted to exhibit the supramolecular assembling process. Additionally, the moisture detection in organic solvents is realized since the water could dissociate the supramolecular assembly.

Terpyridine-functionalized chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel for white emission and multistimuli-responsive behaviour

Rotaxane-Based Mechanophores Enable Polymers with Mechanically Switchable White Photoluminescence

Three mechanoresponsive polyurethane elastomers whose blue, green, and orange photoluminescence can be reversibly turned on by mechanical force were prepared and combined to create a blend that exhibits deformation-induced white photoluminescence. The three polyurethanes contain rotaxane-based supramolecular mechanoluminophores based on π-extended pyrene, anthracene, or 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) luminophores, respectively, and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide as an electronically matched quencher. Each polymer shows instantly reversible, strain-dependent switching of its photoluminescence intensity when stretched and relaxed, as deformation leads to a spatial separation of the luminophore and quencher. The present study shows that the photoluminescence color can easily be tailored by variation of the luminophore and also by combining several mechanophores in one material and demonstrates that adaptability is a key advantage of supramolecular approaches to create mechanoresponsive polymers.

Synergistic Tricolor Emission-Based White Light from Supramolecular Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Gel

The development of engineered hybrid systems by encapsulating nanoparticles in gel scaffolds and their synergistic effects are highly crucial for the fabrication of advanced functional materials. Herein, a series of dipeptides containing an aromatic amino acid at the N-terminal and an aliphatic amino acid at the C-terminal were synthesized and studied. Among them, only the dipeptide l-Phe-l-Val can form both hydro- and organogelator, depending on the N- and C-terminal protecting groups. The organogel shows bright blue emission under 366 nm UV irradiation; however, the hydrogel does not show such blue emission. Such kind of emission may be due to the self-assembly and high degree of aggregation in the gel state of the phenyl ring. The blue-emitting organogel efficiently encapsulates green emission source CdSe quantum dots and red emission source LD 700 perchlorate dye. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid gel exhibits white light emission due to the synergistic effect under 366 nm UV irradiation.

Metallogels: Availability, Applicability, and Advanceability

Introducing metal components into gel matrices provides an effective strategy to develop soft materials with advantageous properties such as: optical activity, conductivity, magnetic response activity, self-healing activity, catalytic activity, etc. In this context, a thorough overview of application-oriented metallogels is provided. Considering that many well-established metallogels start from serendipitous discoveries, insights into the structure-gelation relationship will offer a profound impact on the development of metallogels. Initially, design strategies for discovering new metallogels are discussed, then the advanced applications of metallogels are summarized. Finally, perspectives regarding the design of metallogels, the potential applications of metallogels and their derivative materials are briefly proposed.

Single Chromophore-Based White-Light-Emitting Hydrogel with Tunable Fluorescence and Patternability

Bioluminescence is widespread in nature such as the jellyfish, which inspires scientists to design polymer hydrogels with tunable fluorescence. However, it remains a big challenge to develop white-light-emitting hydrogels with local tunability of the fluorescent behavior. Herein, we report a white fluorescent hydrogel prepared by one-pot micellar copolymerization of hydrophilic acrylamide and hydrophobic single donor-acceptor chromophore monomer, in which the unimer and the dimer of the chromophore coexist and generate high- and low-energy emission, respectively, under excitation. The fluorescent behavior of the hydrogel can be well tuned by phototreatment or heat treatment that induces unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophore and thus variation of the fluorescent color from blue to white and then to yellow. The fluorescence can also be reversibly switched off by forming terpyridine-Cu²⁺ chelate complexes and recovered by using chelating agent to extract the Cu²⁺ ions out of the gel matrix. These properties afford patterning the fluorescent hydrogel, which is transparent under daylight yet shows the pattern under ultraviolet light. These patterned fluorescent hydrogels should find applications in protected message display for improved information security.

Construction of a novel near-infrared fluorescent probe with multiple fluorescence emission and its application for SO2 derivative detection in cells and living zebrafish

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) in biological systems is an important gaseous signal molecule and plays important roles in physiological activities. It can be endogenously produced by enzymes in mitochondria during oxidation of sulphur-containing molecules. Thus, the development of probes for sulfur dioxide detection in biological environment is necessary. Here, a new near-infrared fluorescent probe (Rh-TPA) with multiple fluorescence emission was constructed and applied for SO₂ derivative detection. Rh-TPA was constructed via conjugation of a rhodamine analogue with a triphenylamine group. Rh-TPA exhibited a major emission peak at 740 nm and a shoulder peak at 810 nm. After interacting with SO₂ derivatives, the conjugated system dissociated into two smaller chromophores with two emission peaks (520 nm and 570 nm) in the visible region. The probe showed negligible cytotoxicity, as demonstrated by the MTT results. Biological imaging application experiments indicated that the probe can be used to image SO₂ derivatives in HeLa cells and living zebrafish.

Cd(ii)-nucleobase supramolecular metallo-hydrogels for in situ growth of color tunable CdS quantum dots

The integration of nanoscale materials into unconventional environments such as gels is a magnificent strategy towards development of engineered hybrid functional systems. Herein, the in situ formation of CdS quantum dots integrated into a metallogel formed through the coordination of Cd2+ with two pyrimidine nucleobases is reported. Thymine and uracil formed spontaneous hydrogels with nanofibrous morphology through coordinative interaction with Cd2+ ions at alkaline pH. Introduction of Na2S resulted in generation of CdS quantum dots within the hydrogels with tunable emission properties from blue to white to yellow. The quenching of emission of white light system was exploited for the sensing of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions. Such a color tunable quantum dot incorporated metallogel system will find applications in energy harvesting and sensing.

Syntheses, crystal structures and phosphorescence properties of cyclometalated iridium(III) bis(pyridylbenzaldehyde) complexes with dithiolate ligands

The synthesis of three neutral bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes [Ir(pba)2(S^S)] (pbaH=4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde; S^S=Et2NCS2 − (1), iPrOCS2 − (2), (nPrO)2PS2 − (3)) from [{Ir(μ-Cl)(pba)2}2] and the corresponding sodium or potassium dithiolates in methanol-dichloromethane is described. The composition of complexes 1–3 is discussed on the basis of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopy, and the crystal structures of 1 and 3 were determined by X-ray crystallography. The absorption and emission spectra show that the [Ir(pba)2(S^S)] complexes may be effective candidates as green-emitting phosphorescent materials. The stability of the three cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes towards different transition metal ions was also investigated in acetonitrile-water solvent.

Printable Fluorescent Hydrogels Based on Self-Assembling Peptides

Fluorescent hydrogels (FH) have a variety of potential applications in the field of soft electronics. However, fabrication of mechanically stable and printable fluorescent hydrogels remains challenging. Here, we report a kind of fluorescent hydrogel based on the co-assembly of peptide motif and transition metal ions. The metal ions are captured in the hydrogel network at specific positions through covalently linked ligands on the peptide hydrogelators. This efficiently prevents the aggregation and self-quenching of organometallic chromophores. In addition, the formation of metal-ligand complexes introduces additional interactions to stabilize the hydrogel network, making the FH even more stable after the incorporation of metal ions. The FH is optically transparent but highly fluorescent. By using three different metal ions, the white light fluorescent supramolecular hydrogel has been achieved. As a proof-of-principle, we demonstrate the printability of the hydrogels to various patterns. We anticipate that with the improved fluorescent performance and stability, this kind of FH can find broad applications in extrusion-based 3D printing for the construction of soft electronics.

A dual response organogel system based on an iridium complex and a Eu(iii) hybrid for volatile acid and organic amine vapors

A thiophene-based hybrid organogel system consisting of complex iridium (Ir) and EuCl₃·6H₂O was designed and synthesized to realize dual responses to volatile acids and organic amine vapors. The photophysical properties and self-assembly of compound 1 and the hybrid organogel were also studied. Compound 1 could gelate some organic solvents and self-assemble into 3D nanofibers in the gels. The stable hybrid organogel 1-Ir-Eu could be obtained after addition of complex Ir and EuCl₃·6H₂O. FTIR spectral results showed that the hydrogen bond still remained even upon addition of complex Ir, EuCl₃·6H₂O, NaOH and CF₃COOH to organogel 1. Interestingly, the emission properties of the hybrid organogel 1-Ir-Eu could undergo interconversion between cyan light and red light via addition of NaOH and CF₃COOH. The emission properties of xerogel film 1-Ir-Eu obtained in the presence of NaOH could also undergo fast and reversible transition in response to volatile acids such as CF₃COOH, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid and organic amine vapors such as ammonium hydroxide, Et₃N, tripropylamine, and ethylenediamine. The emission spectral change of Ir-Eu in the organogel or xerogel in the presence of base and acid demonstrated the formation of a new complex between complex Ir and EuCl₃·6H₂O. This dual-response process could be repeated many times. Contact angle experiment results further showed the morphology and internal components of the xerogel film surface in the process of response to gaseous CF₃COOH and Et₃N. This work provides a method for producing multifunctional supramolecular materials for sensing volatile acids and organic amine vapors.

An Ir(III) complex chemosensor for the detection of thiols

In this study, we report the use of a cyclometalated luminescent iridium(III) complex for the visualization of thiols. The detection of glutathione (GSH) by complex 1 is achieved through the reduction of its phendione N^N donor, which influences the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) of the complex. Complex 1 produced a maximum threefold luminescence enhancement at 587 nm in response to GSH. The linear detection range of 1 for GSH is between 0.2 and 2 M equivalents of GSH, with a detection limit of 1.67 μM. Complex 1 also displays good selectivity for thiols over other amino acids.

Large red-shifted fluorescent emission via intermolecular π-π stacking in 4-ethynyl-1,8-naphthalimide-based supramolecular assemblies

Two low molecular weight gelators containing 4-ethynyl-1,8-naphthalimide groups with large conjugated structure via different length of alkyl chains were synthesized and fully characterized. The gelation properties, structural character, and fluorescence of the gels were investigated via methods of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and spectral studies. The gelators have high fluorescence quantum yields in both solution and solid state. Interestingly, the wavelength of the fluorescent emission in the reversible sol-gel transition process of the gels has a large red-shift of 80 nm in DMF, which is extremely sparse for 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives in the literature. The intermolecular π-π stacking between naphthalimide is suggested to be the main driving force for the gel formation and fluorescent variation by means of temperature-dependent (1)H NMR study and theoretical calculation.

(-)-Menthol based thixotropic hydrogel and its application as a universal antibacterial carrier

A kind of novel hydrogelator based on (-)-menthol, a traditional cooling compound, tailed by an amino acid derivate through an alkyl chain, has been designed and synthesized. The hydrogelator containing an l-lysine can form a stable hydrogel with thixotropic character in a large pH range. An interesting feature is that the viscoelastic character of the hydrogel can be enhanced by mechanical force. The mechanism of the self-assembly process was investigated by means of IR, SEM, AFM and X-ray diffraction. The formation of three dimensional multiporous networks through acid base interactions and strong double hydrogen bonding between amino acids is proposed to be the driving force for the construction of the stable hydrogel. As a result, the hydrogelator can further gelate aqueous solutions of some confirmed antibacterial agents such as Zn(2+) and a series of water soluble organic antibiotic medicines like lincomycin, amoxicillin, etc., in such a unique way that the concentration of the antibacterial agents loaded into the hydrogel can be tuned to a large extent. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the hydrogels loaded with Zn(2+) or lincomycin is much more effective than that of the corresponding aqueous solution tested by the Oxford cup method. Furthermore, the hydrogelator is completely innoxious to living cells by measurement of MTT assay. Thus, the hydrogel can be developed as a universal carrier for antibacterial agents and may also be widely used in the fields of cell culture, tissue engineering, or drug delivery systems.

Co-assembled white-light-emitting hydrogel of melamine

A coassembled light-harvesting hydrogel of melamine (M), 6,7-dimethoxy-2,4[1H, 3H]-quinazolinedione (Q) with riboflavin (R), is used to produce a white-light-emitting hydrogel (W-gel) by mixing with the dye rhodamine B (RhB) in a requisite proportion. Addition of R to the Q solution causes both static and dynamic quenching to the emission of Q as evident from the Stern-Volmer plot and the emission of R shows a gradual increase in intensity. On addition of RhB to an aqueous solution of R, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurs, showing an emission peak at 581 nm. In a solution of constant molar ratio of Q and R, addition of RhB causes a quenching of emission of R with no effect on the emission of Q, indicating that the energy transfer takes place only between R and RhB. In the MQR coassembled hydrogel containing RhB, the gel melting temperature is lower than those of MQ and MQR gel, but the storage modulus remains almost unaffected. The oscillatory stress experiment indicates a gradual decrease of critical stress values for breaking of MQ, MQR, and W-gels attributed to the coassembly. In contrast to the solution of Q and R, energy transfer occurs on addition of RhB to the MQ gel. By varying the RhB and R concentration in the 1:1 MQ gel white light emission is observed for the W-gel composition having molar ratio of M:Q:R:RhB = 100:100:0.5:0.02 with the Commission Internationale de L'eclairage (CIE) coordinates of 0.31 and 0.36 for the excitation at 360 nm. However, in the sol state, the CIE coordinates of the hybrid differ significantly from those of the white light.
