Nanoconjugates based on a novel organic-inorganic hybrid silsesquioxane and gold nanoparticles as hemocompatible nanomaterials for promising biosensing applications

A new hybrid organic-inorganic silsesquioxane material, 3-n-propyl(2-amino-4-methyl)pyridium chloride (SiAMPy⁺Cl^-), was synthesized and successfully applied for the synthesis of stable nanoconjugates with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-SiAMPy⁺). SiAMPy⁺Cl^- was obtained through a simple sol-gel procedure by using chloropropyltrimetoxysilane and tetraethylorthosilicate as precursors and 2-amino-4-methylpyridine as the functionalizing agent. The resulting material was characterized by employing FTIR, XRD, and ¹H-, ¹³C-, and ²⁹Si-NMR spectroscopy. The synthesis of AuNPs-SiAMPy⁺ nanoconjugates was optimized through a 2³ full factorial design. UV-VIS, FTIR, TEM, DLS, and ζ-potential measurements were used to characterize the nanoconjugates, which presented a spherical morphology with an average diameter of 5.8 nm. To investigate the existence of toxic effects of AuNPs-SiAMPy⁺ on blood cells, which is essential for their future biomedical applications, toxicity assays on human erythrocytes and leukocytes were performed. Interestingly, no cytotoxic effects were observed for both types of cells. The nanoconjugates were further applied in the construction of electrochemical immunosensing devices, aiming the detection of anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies in serum as biomarkers of Chagas disease. The AuNPs-SiAMPy⁺ significantly enhanced the sensitivity of the biodevice, which was able to discriminate between anti-T. cruzi positive and negative serum samples. Thus, the AuNPs-SiAMPy⁺-based biosensor showed great potential to be used as a new tool to perform fast and accurate diagnosis of Chagas disease. The promising findings described herein strongly confirm the remarkable potential of SiAMPy⁺Cl^- to obtain nanomaterials, which can present notable biomedical properties and applications.

Correlation between surface chemistry and magnetism in iron nanoparticles

To shed light on the factors governing the stability and surface properties of iron nanoparticles, a series of iron nanoparticles has been produced by hydrogenation of two different iron amido complexes: the bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)amido] Fe(ii), [Fe(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂]₂, and the bis(diphenylamido) Fe(ii), [Fe(NPh₂)₂]. Nanostructured materials of bcc structure, or nanoparticles displaying average sizes below 3 nm and a polytetrahedral structure, have been obtained. Depending on the synthesis conditions, the magnetization of the nanoparticles was either significantly lower than that of bulk iron, or much higher as for clusters elaborated under high vacuum conditions. Unexpectedly, hydrogenation of aromatic groups of the ligands of the [Fe(NPh₂)₂] precursor has been observed in some cases. Confrontation of the experimental results with DFT calculations made on polytetrahedral Fe₉₁ model clusters bearing hydrides, amido and/or amine ligands at their surface, has shown that amido ligands can play a key role in the stabilisation of the nanoparticles in solution while the hydride surface coverage governs their surface magnetic properties. This study indicates that magnetic measurements give valuable indicators of the surface properties of iron nanoparticles in this size range, and beyond, of their potential reactivity.

Size, shape, and compositional effects on the order-disorder phase transitions in Au-Cu and Pt-M (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) nanocluster alloys

Au-Cu and Pt-M (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) nanocluster alloys are currently being investigated world-wide by many researchers for their interesting catalytic and nanophase properties. The low temperature behavior of the phase diagrams is not well understood for alloys with nanometer sizes and shapes. We consider two models for low temperature ordering in the phase diagrams of Au-Cu and Pt-M nanocluster alloys. These models are valid for sizes ∼5 nm and approach bulk values for sizes ∼20 nm. We study the phase transitions in nanoclusters with cubic, octahedral, and cuboctahedral shapes, covering the compositions of interest. These models are based on studying the melting temperatures in nanoclusters using the regular solution, mixing model for alloys. From our data, experiments on nanocubes about 5 nm in size, of stoichiometric AuCu and PtM composition, could help differentiate between the models. Dispersion data shows that for the three shapes considered, octahedra have the highest percentage of surface atoms for the same relative diameter. We summarize the effects of structural ordering on the catalytic activity and suggest a method to avoid sintering during annealing of Pt-M alloys.

Mg2+-assisted low temperature reduction of alloyed AuPd/C: an efficient catalyst for hydrogen generation from formic acid at room temperature

An alloyed AuPd/C nanocatalyst was prepared via Mg²⁺-assisted low temperature reduction, and exhibited high activity in room temperature decomposition of formic acid.

CuS2-passivated Au-core, Au3Cu-shell nanoparticles analyzed by atomistic-resolution Cs-corrected STEM

Au-core, Au3Cu-alloyed shell nanoparticles passivated with CuS2 were fabricated by the polyol method, and characterized by Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The analysis of the high-resolution micrographs reveals that these nanoparticles have decahedral structure with shell periodicity, and that each of the particles is composed by Au core and Au3Cu alloyed shell surrounded by CuS2 surface layer. X-ray diffraction measurements and results from numerical simulations confirm these findings. From the atomic resolution micrographs, we identified edge dislocations at the twin boundaries of the particles, as well as evidence of the diffusion of Cu atoms into the Au region, and the reordering of the lattice on the surface, close to the vertices of the particle. These defects will impact the atomic and electronic structures, thereby changing the physical and chemical properties of the nanoparticles. On the other hand, we show for the first time the formation of an ordered superlattice of Au3Cu and a self-capping layer made using one of the alloy metals. This has significant consequences on the physical mechanism that form multicomponent nanoparticles.
