Abstract
The effects of water absorption on the electric resistivity and dielectric constant of polyimide (PI) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were investigated, and the mechanism of deterioration in electrical insulation properties was discussed. The polyimides are poly(oxydianiline pyromellitimide) (PMDA-ODA) and poly(para-phenylene diamine biphenyltetracarboxydiimide) (BPDA-PDA). These polymer films were immersed in pure water for various immersion times at room temperature, and the water absorption ratio was evaluated. The electric resistance for these films was measured at room temperature using a high-resistance meter, and the dielectric constant at room temperature was measured using an LCR meter in a frequency range of 200 kHz to 2 MHz. The absorption ratios at equilibrium absorption for PMDA-ODA, BPDA-PDA, and PET were 2.7, 2.5, and 0.5%, respectively. The critical volume fraction of the percolation threshold of electric conductivity due to water absorption was 0.034 for both PMDA-ODA and BPDA-PDA. On the other hand, PET did not show a significant decrease in the resistivity. For both PIs and PET, the dielectric constant observed could be explained by a series model of the respective capacitances of pure water and polymer. Actually, the resistivity of samples cut from the edges of the film after water absorption was almost the same value as that in the dry state. These results suggest that the absorbed water molecules are not uniformly dispersed in the film but are localized at the edges of the film even after the absorption equilibrium has been reached.

Abstract
Polyimide (PI) with ultra-high thermal resistance and stability is essential for application as a flexible substrate in electronic devices. Here, the Upilex-type polyimides, which contained flexibly "twisted" 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), have achieved various performance improvements via copolymerization with a diamine containing benzimidazole structure. With the rigid benzimidazole-based diamine bearing conjugated heterocyclic moieties and hydrogen bond donors fused into the PI backbone, the benzimidazole-containing PI showed outstanding thermal, mechanical, and dielectric performance. Specifically, the PI containing 50% bis-benzimidazole diamine achieved a 5% decomposition temperature at 554 °C, an excellent high glass transition temperature of 448 °C, and a coefficient of thermal expansion lowered to 16.1 ppm/K. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and modulus of the PI films containing 50% mono-benzimidazole diamine increased to 148.6 MPa and 4.1 GPa, respectively. Due to the synergistic effect of rigid benzimidazole and hinged, flexible ODA, all PI films exhibited an elongation at break above 4.3%. The electrical insulation of the PI films was also improved with a dielectric constant lowered to 1.29. In summary, with appropriate mixing of rigid and flexible moieties in the PI backbone, all the PI films showed superior thermal stability, excellent flexibility, and acceptable electrical insulation.

Abstract
In this study, based on the preparation of hexaazatriphenylene-ternary-anhydride (HAT-T), polyimide membranes were prepared by reaction of 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfide (SDA), 2,2′-bis (trifluoromethyl)diaminobiphenyl (TFDB) and 5-amino-2-(4-aminophenyl) benzimidazole (PABZ). Polyimide films with a hexazobenzo structure have good film-forming properties, high molecular weight (Mn = 0.79–11.79 × 106, Mw = 1.03–16.60 × 106) and narrow molecular weight distribution (polymer dispersity index = 1.17–1.54). With the introduction of rigid HAT-T, the tensile strength and elongation at break of polyimide films are 195.63–510.37 MPa and 4.00–9.70%, respectively, with excellent mechanical properties. The gas separation performance test shows that hexaazatriphenylene-containing polyimide films have good gas selectivity for CO2/CH4. In particular, the separation performance of PIc-t (6FDA/PABZ/HAT-T) surpasses the “2008 Robeson Upper Bound”. The selectivity of 188.43 for CO2/CH4 gas reveals its potential value in the separation and purification of methane gas.

Abstract
To obtain high thermostable materials for flexible display substrates, a series of copoly(benzimidazole imide)s was prepared using 5-amine-2-(4-aminobenzene)-1-phenyl-benzimidazole (N-PhPABZ) and 6(5)-amino-2-(4-aminobenzene)-benzimidazole (PABZ). Incorporating N-phenyl groups effectively healed the brittleness of the poly(benzimidazole imide)s (PBIIs) derived from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and the resultant homo- and copoly(benzimidazole imide)s displayed an outstandingly high glass transition temperature (Tg > 450 °C) and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE < 10 ppm K−1). Furthermore, the influence of removing intermolecular hydrogen bonds on the properties of these poly(benzimidazole imide)s was systematically analyzed. These data provide a feasible method to prepare superheat-resistant poly(benzimidazole imide)s without H-bonding. N-PhPABZ successfully cured the brittleness of PMDA-based poly(benzimidazole imide)s. N-PhPABZ-PMDA film illustrated an extremely high Tg of 486 °C and a low CTE of 9.7 ppm K−1.![]()

Abstract
To prepare soluble polyimides with high temperature resistance, two new diamine monomers, namely, 2,2′-(4,4′-oxybisphenylene)-bis(1-phenyl-5-aminobenzimidazole) (5a), and 2,2′-(4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidene)-bis(1-phenyl-5- aminobenzimidazole) (5b), were synthesized and exploited to prepare three series of poly(benzimidazole imides)s (PBIIs) by a conventional two-stage synthesis. The resulting PI films were flexible and tough, possessing high glass-transition temperatures (Tgs = 311°C–390°C), improved optical transparency, and excellent solubility. Moreover, the effect of different configuration on performance was revealed, and these data provided a feasible method to enhance both Tg and solubility of PIs by incorporating N-phenyl benzimidazole and corresponding functional moieties.

Abstract
A novel diamine named (2,2'-bibenzoxazole)-5,5'-diamine (DBOA) and derived polyimides (PIs) were successfully synthesized. The rigid, linear, symmetrical molecular structure and the strong charge transfer complex (CTC) were considered to be the reasons for the improved molecular packing and enhanced thermal properties of the polymers. These DBOA based PIs exhibited a higher glass transition temperature (T g) and lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than traditional benzoxazole (BOA) based PIs. Meanwhile, the PI derived from DBOA and BPDA (3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride) exhibited high T g (395 °C) and low CTE (8.9 ppm per °C), and is expected to be applied in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

Abstract
Polyimide diffractive membrane lens can be used in space optical telescope to reduce the size and mass of an imaging system. However, traditional commercial aromatic polyimide membrane is hard to meet the challenging requirements of dimensional stability and optical homogeneity for optical use. Based on molecular structure design and the optimization of fabrication process, the prepared copolyamide-imide membrane achieved the desired performance of membrane as an optical material. It showed a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), which is 0.95 ppm/°C over a temperature range of −150–100 °C and relatively low coefficient of moisture expansion (CME), which is only 13.30 ppm/% RH (0~90% RH). For the optical use, the prepared copolyamide-imide membrane (φ200 mm) achieved good thickness uniformity with wave-front error smaller than λ/30 (λ = 632 nm) in RMS (root mean square). Besides, it simultaneously meets the optical, thermal, and mechanical requirements for space telescope use. Copolyamide-imide membranes in this research with good comprehensive performance can be used as large aperture membrane optical system architectures.

Abstract
5-Amine-2-(4-amino-benzene)-1-phenyl-benzimidazole (N-PhPABZ) was successfully synthesized and polymerized with 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) to obtain a novel N-phenyl-poly(benzimidazole imide) (N-Ph-PBII). The successful incorporation of N-phenyl addressed the issue of high H2O-absorption of traditional PBIIs while retained the superheat resistance property. The resulting N-Ph-PBII possessed a high glass-transition temperature (Tg) up to 425 °C and a low affinity for water of 1.4%. Furthermore, the loose molecular packing and noncoplanar structures led to an increase in optical transparency for the modified PBII. A novel modified PBII was achieved. The incorporation of N-phenyl group not only improved the properties but also healed the problem of high H2O-absorption for traditional PBIIs.![]()

Abstract
Carbon molecular sieve (CMS)-based membrane separation is a promising solution for hydrogen separation due to its great advantages on perm-selectivity, thermal stability, and chemical stability. To prepare high-performance CMS membranes, the molecular structure of polymer precursors and their arrangements should be primarily considered. In this work, a benzimidazole-based 6FDA (2,2'-bis(3,4'-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride)-type polyimide (PABZ-6FDA-PI) is chosen as precursor to prepare the CMS membrane. Effects of chain flatness and contortion in the polyimide precursor on gas-separation performance of CMS membranes were studied in detail by gas adsorption and permeation experiment. The H2 permeability of CMS is up to 9500 Barrer and ideal selectivity of gas pairs of H2 /CH4 and H2 /CO2 is up to 3800 and 13, respectively. The comprehensive performance of hydrogen separation including H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 gas pairs is located well above previously reported upper bounds for polymers.

Abstract
The water sources contaminated by toxic dyes would pose a serious problem for public health. In view of this, the development of a simple yet effective method for removing dyes from industrial effluent has attracted interest from researchers. In the present work, flat sheet mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with different physiochemical properties were fabricated by blending P84 polyimide with different concentrations of cadmium-based metal organic frameworks (MOF-2(Cd)). The resultant membranes were then used for simultaneous removal of eosin y (EY), sunset yellow (SY) and methylene blue (MB) under various process conditions. The findings indicated that the membranes could achieve high water permeability (117.8-171.4 L/m2.h.bar) and promising rejection for simultaneous dyes removal, recording value of 99.9%, 81.2% and 68.4% for MB, EY and SY, respectively. When 0.2 wt% MOF-2(Cd) was incorporated into the membrane matrix, the membrane separation efficiency was improved by 110.2% and 213.3% for EY and SY removal, respectively when compared with the pristine membrane. In addition, the optimization and modeling of membrane permeate flux and dye rejection was explored using response surface methodology. The actual and model results are in good agreement with R2 of at least 0.9983 for dye rejection and permeate flux. The high flux of the developed MMMs coupled with effective separation of dyes suggests a promising prospect of using P84 polyimide MMMs incorporated with MOF-2(Cd) for water purification.

Abstract
In this work, 4,4′-isopropylidenedicyclohexanol (HBPA)-based dinitro isomers mixture (H″BPBN and H′BPBN) was synthesized and separated, and the structures of dinitro isomers were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. A series of copolyimides were prepared from diamino monomers with different percentages of novel diamine H″BPDA and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride via a conventional two-step procedure. All the copolyimides could afford flexible, tough, and transparent films with transmittance no less than 73% at 450 nm, which was attributed to the fact that nonplanar alicyclic diamine and the bulky and weakly polarizable trifluoromethyl hampered the formation of charge-transfer complex. Moreover, all the copolyimides were soluble not only in polar solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide but also in low-boiling-point solvents such as dichloromethane, which was related to the fact that the existence of alicyclic diamine and bulky trifluoromethyl decreased the intermolecular force. In addition, the conformation effects of H″BPDA and H′BPDA on the aspects of thermal, mechanical, optical, and soluble performance of copolyimides were investigated and their structure–property relationships were discussed in detail.

An unsymmetrical heterocyclic diamine monomer containing proton donor (–NH–), 2-(4-aminophenyl)-5-aminobenzimidazole (PABZ), which can form hydrogen bond interactions with carbonyl functional group, was copolymerized with 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-diaminobiphenyl (TFMB) through two-step synthetic methods to obtain a series of homo- and co-polyimide (PI). The corresponding homo- and co-PI both exhibited good solubility in aprotic polar solvents, such as N, N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N, N-dimethylformamide, pyridine, and dimethyl sulfoxide. In addition, the PI-containing PABZ units showed excellent tensile strength ranging from 83 to 164 MPa, 130–260% higher than 6FDA/TFMB homo-PIa films. These PIs, especially PABZ/6FDA, showed very high glass transition temperatures, 430°C.

Abstract
Protection of intrinsically brittle quartz chromatographic columns (CCs) from breakage or property deterioration in gas chromatography (GC) analysis has become an important research topic regarding high-temperature GC techniques. Polyimide (PI) has proved to be the most suitable protective coating for quartz CCs. In the current research, a series of novel high-temperature-resistant PI coatings for quartz CCs operated over 320 °C have been successfully prepared. For this purpose, the aromatic diamine with a rigid skeleton structure 2-(4-aminophenyl)-5-aminobenzimidazole (APBI) was copolymerized with two aromatic dianhydrides—3,3’,4,4’-benzophenotetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4’-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA)—and an aromatic diamine with flexible ether linkages—4,4’-oxydianiline (ODA)—by a two-step polymerization procedure via soluble poly(amic acid) (PAA) precursors, followed by thermal imidization at elevated temperatures. The developed PI coatings exhibited good comprehensive properties, including glass transition temperatures (Tg) as high as 346.9 °C, measured by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and coefficients of linear thermal expansion (CTEs) as low as 24.6 × 10−6/K in the range of 50–300 °C. In addition, the PI coatings exhibited good adhesion to the fused quartz capillary columns. No cracking, delamination, warpage, or other failures occurred during the 100-cycle thermal shock test in the range of 25–320 °C.
