Abstract
Ceria-based materials have been highly desired in photocatalytic reactions due to their redox properties and strong oxygen storage and transfer ability. Herein, we report the structures of one CeCe70 oxysulfate cluster and four MCe70 clusters (M = Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe) with the same Ce70 core. As noted, single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the structures of CeCe70 and the MCe70 series, while Raman spectroscopy indicated an increase in oxygen defects upon the introduction of Cu and Fe ions. The clusters catalyzed the oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol under ultraviolet light. CuCe70 and FeCe70 exhibited enhanced reactivity compared to CeCe70 and improved aldehyde selectivity compared to control experiments. In comparison with their homogeneous congeners, the CeCe70/MCe70 clusters altered the location of radical generation from the bulk solution to the clusters' surfaces. Mechanistic studies highlight the role of oxygen defects and specific transition metal introduction for efficient photocatalysis. The mechanistic pathway in this study provides insight into how to select or design a highly selective catalyst for photocatalysis.

Abstract
Molecular metal oxides are key materials in diverse fields like energy storage and conversion, molecular magnetism and as model systems for solid-state metal oxides. To improve their performance and increase the variety of accessible motifs, new synthetic approaches are necessary. Herein, we report a universal, new precursor to access different metal-functionalized polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters. The precursor is synthesized by a novel solid-state thermal treatment procedure. Solution-phase test reactions at room temperature and pressure show that reaction of the precursor with various metal nitrate salts gives access to a range of metal-functionalized POVs. The first nitrate-templated molecular calcium vanadate cluster is reported. We show that this precursor could open new access routes to POV components for molecular magnetism, energy technologies or catalysis.

Abstract
Heterometallic CeIV/M oxo clusters are underexplored yet and can benefit from synergistic properties from combining cerium and other metal cations to produce efficient redox catalysts. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of new Ce12V6 oxo clusters with different capping ligands: Ce12V6-SO4, Ce12V6-OTs (OTs: toluenesulfonic acid), and Ce12V6-NBSA (NBSA: nitrobenzenesulfonic acid). Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) for all three structures reveals a Ce12V6 cubane core formulated [Ce12(VO)6O24]18+ with cerium on the edges of the cube, vanadyl capping the faces, and sulfate on the corners. While infrared spectroscopy (IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) proved the successful coordination of the organic ligands to the Ce12V6 core, liquid phase 51V NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirmed the integrity of the clusters in the organic solutions. Furthermore, functionalization of the Ce12V6 core with organic ligands both provides increased solubility in term of homogeneous application and introduces porosity to the assemblies of Ce12V6-OTs and Ce12V6-NBSA in term of heterogeneous application, thus allowing more catalytic sites to be accessible and improving reactivity as compared to the nonporous and less soluble Ce12V6-SO4. Meanwhile, the coordinated ligands also influenced the electronic environment of the catalytic sites, in turn affecting the reactivity of the cluster, which we probed by the selective oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). This work provides a strategy to make full use of the catalytic sites within a class of inorganic sulfate capped clusters via organic ligand introduction.

Abstract
Molecular vanadium oxides, or polyoxovanadates (POVs), have recently emerged as a new class of molecular energy conversion/storage materials, which combine diverse, chemically tunable redox behavior and reversible multielectron storage capabilities. This Review explores current challenges, major breakthroughs, and future opportunities in the use of POVs for energy conversion and storage. The reactivity, advantages, and limitations of POVs are explored, with a focus on their use in lithium and post-lithium-ion batteries, redox-flow batteries, and light-driven energy conversion. Finally, emerging themes and new research directions are critically assessed to provide inspiration for how this promising materials class can advance research in sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract
Polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are an important subclass of polyoxometalates with a broad range of molecular compositions and physicochemical properties. One relatively underdeveloped application of these polynuclear assemblies involves their use as atomically precise, homogenous molecular models for bulk metal oxides. Given the structural and electronic similarities of POVs and extended vanadium oxide materials, as well as the relative ease of modifying the homogenous congeners, investigation of the chemical and physical properties of pristine and modified cluster complexes presents a method toward understanding the influence of structural modifications (e.g. crystal structure/phase, chemical makeup of surface ligands, elemental dopants) on the properties of extended solids. This review summarises recent advances in the use of POV clusters as atomically precise models for bulk metal oxides, with particular focus on the assembly of vanadium oxide clusters and the consequences of altering the molecular composition of the assembly via organofunctionalization and the incorporation of elemental "dopants".

Abstract
Endowing achiral polyoxometalates (POMs) with asymmetric catalytic properties is always an intriguing but challenging topic because of their high catalytic activities yet highly symmetrical molecular structures. In this work, a novel strategy was proposed to fabricate a series of two-dimensional chiral POM catalysts. Following the steps of exfoliation, covalent modification, and reassembly, the achiral POMs were orderly confined into the chiral interstitial domains of chiral ionic liquid (CIL)-modified layered double hydroxide materials with a decreased molecular symmetry. The chirality of POM molecules was induced by the l- or d-pyrrolidine-type CILs, and their asymmetric catalytic activity was enhanced by the confinement effect. Compared with the reported chiral POM-based catalysts [e.g., 8 turnover frequency (TOF) and 79% enantiomeric excess (ee) for chiral POM-based metal-organic frameworks], the constructed chiral POM catalysts showed a significantly higher TOF and enantioselectivity (up to 240 TOF and 93% ee) for the asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols. The facilitated mass transfer in the IL channels and the increased binding efficiency between the chiral catalytic sites and reactants render this strategy highly promising for constructing efficient chiral catalysts from the catalytically active while achiral building blocks.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) are molecular metal-oxide anions applied in energy conversion and storage, manipulation of biomolecules, catalysis, as well as materials design and assembly. Although often overlooked, the interplay of intrinsically anionic POMs with organic and inorganic cations is crucial to control POM self-assembly, stabilization, solubility, and function. Beyond simple alkali metals and ammonium, chemically diverse cations including dendrimers, polyvalent metals, metal complexes, amphiphiles, and alkaloids allow tailoring properties for known applications, and those yet to be discovered. This review provides an overview of fundamental POM-cation interactions in solution, the resulting solid-state compounds, and behavior and properties that emerge from these POM-cation interactions. We will explore how application-inspired research has exploited cation-controlled design to discover new POM materials, which in turn has led to the quest for fundamental understanding of POM-cation interactions.

Abstract
Photosynthetic water oxidation in plants occurs at an inorganic calcium manganese oxo cluster, which is known as the oxygen evolving complex (OEC), in photosystem II. Herein, we report a synthetic OEC model based on a molecular manganese vanadium oxide cluster, [Mn4 V4 O17 (OAc)3 ](3-) . The compound is based on a [Mn4 O4 ](6+) cubane core, which catalyzes the homogeneous, visible-light-driven oxidation of water to molecular oxygen and is stabilized by a tripodal [V4 O13 ](6-) polyoxovanadate and three acetate ligands. When combined with the photosensitizer [Ru(bpy)3 ](2+) and the oxidant persulfate, visible-light-driven water oxidation with turnover numbers of approximately 1150 and turnover frequencies of about 1.75 s(-1) is observed. Electrochemical, mass-spectrometric, and spectroscopic studies provide insight into the cluster stability and reactivity. This compound could serve as a model for the molecular structure and reactivity of the OEC and for heterogeneous metal oxide water-oxidation catalysts.

Abstract
The first systematic access to molecular cerium vanadium oxides is presented. A family of structurally related, di-cerium-functionalized vanadium oxide clusters and their use as visible-light-driven photooxidation catalysts is reported. Comparative analyses show that photocatalytic activity is controlled by the cluster architecture. Increased photoreactivity of the cerium vanadium oxides in the visible range compared with nonfunctionalized vanadates is observed. Based on the recent discovery of the first molecular cerium vanadate cluster, (nBu4 N)2 [(Ce(dmso)3 )2 V12 O33 Cl]⋅2 DMSO (1), two new di-cerium-containing vanadium oxide clusters [(Ce(dmso)4 )2 V11 O30 Cl]⋅DMSO (2) and [(Ce(nmp)4 )2 V12 O32 Cl]⋅NMP⋅Me2 CO (3; NMP=N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) were obtained by using a novel fragmentation and reassembly route. Pentagonal building units {(V)M5 } (M=V, Ce) reminiscent of "Müller-type" pentagons are observed in 2 and 3. Compounds 1-3 feature high visible-light photooxidative activity, and quantum efficiencies >10 % for indigo photooxidation are observed. Photocatalytic performance increases in the order 1<3<2. Mechanistic studies show that the irradiation wavelength and the presence of oxygen strongly affect photoreactivity. Initial findings suggest that the photooxidation mechanism proceeds by intermediate formation of hydroxyl radicals. The findings open new avenues for the bottom-up design of sunlight-driven photocatalysts.

Abstract
The visible light photooxidative performance of a new high-nuclearity molecular bismuth vanadium oxide cluster, H3[{Bi(dmso)3}4V13O40], is reported. Photocatalytic activity studies show faster reaction kinetics under anaerobic conditions, suggesting an oxygen-dependent quenching of the photoexcited cluster species. Further mechanistic analysis shows that the reaction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hydroxyl radicals which act as oxidant. Trapping experiments using ethanol as a hydroxyl radical scavenger show significantly decreased photocatalytic substrate oxidation in the presence of EtOH. Photocatalytic performance analyses using monochromatic visible light irradiation show that the quantum efficiency Φ for indigo photooxidation is strongly dependent on the irradiation wavelength, with higher quantum efficiencies being observed at shorter wavelengths (Φ395nm ca. 15%). Recycling tests show that the compound can be employed as homogeneous photooxidation catalyst multiple times without loss of catalytic activity. High turnover numbers (TON ca. 1200) and turnover frequencies up to TOF ca. 3.44 min(-1) are observed, illustrating the practical applicability of the cluster species.
