Recent Advances in Stimuli-Responsive Metallogels

Recently, stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels have received significant attention because their properties can be modulated through external stimuli such as heat, light, electricity, magnetic fields, mechanical stress, pH, ions, chemicals and enzymes. Among these gels, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels have shown promising applications in material science because of their fascinating redox, optical, electronic and magnetic properties. In this review, research progress on stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels in recent years is systematically summarized. According to external stimulus sources, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels, including chemical, physical and multiple stimuli-responsive metallogels, are discussed separately. Moreover, challenges, suggestions and opportunities regarding the development of novel stimuli-responsive metallogels are presented. We believe the knowledge and inspiration gained from this review will deepen the current understanding of stimuli-responsive smart metallogels and encourage more scientists to provide valuable contributions to this topic in the coming decades.

Electrocatalytic Production of Hydrogen Peroxide Enabled by Post-Synthetic Modification of a Self-Assembled Porphyrin Cube

Self-assembled metallacyles and cages formed via coordination chemistry have been used as catalysts to enforce 4H+/4e- reduction of oxygen to water with an emphasis on attenuating the formation of hydrogen peroxide. That said, the kinetically favored 2H+/2e- reduction to H2O2 is critically important to industry. In this work we report the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical benchmarking of a hexa-porphyrin cube which catalyses the electrochemical reduction of molecular oxgyen to hydrogen peroxide. An established sub-component self-assembly approach was used to synthesize the cubic free-base porphryin topologies from 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, tetra-4-aminophenylporphryin (TAPP), and Fe(OTf)2 (OTf- = trifluoromethansulfonate). Then, a tandem metalation/transmetallation was used to introduce Co(II) into the porphyrin faces of the cube, and exchange with the Fe(II) cations at the vertices, furnishing a tetrakaideca cobalt cage. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies on a Cu(II)/Fe(II) analogue probed radical interactions which inform on electronic structure. The efficacy and selectivity of the CoCo-cube as a catalyst for hydrogen peroxide generation was investigated using hydrodynamic voltammetry, revealing a higher selectivity than that of a mononuclear Co(II) porphyrin (83% versus ~50%) with orders of magnitude enhancement in standard rate constant (ks = 2.2 × 102 M-1s-1 versus ks = 3 × 100 M-1s-1). This work expands the use of coordination-driven self-assembly beyond ORR to water by exploiting post-synthetic modification and structural control that is associated with this synthetic method.

Adipic acid directed self-healable supramolecular metallogels of Co(II) and Ni(II): intriguing scaffolds for comparative optical-phenomenon in terms of third-order optical non-linearity

Two brilliant outcomes of supramolecular self-assembly directed, low molecular weight organic gelator based self-healable Co(II) and Ni(II) metallogels were achieved. Adipic acid as the low molecular weight organic gelator and dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent are employed for the metallogelation process. Rheological analyses of both gel-scaffolds reveal mechanical toughness as well as visco-elasticity. Thixotropic behaviours of both the gels were scrutinized. Morphological variations due to the presence of two different metal ions with diverse metal-ligand coordinating interactions were established. The mechanistic pathways for forming stable metallogels of Co(II)-adipic acid (Co-AA) and Ni(II)-adipic acid (Ni-AA) were judiciously developed through infrared absorption spectral analysis. The nonlinear optical properties, such as the third-order process, of these synthesized metallogels were scrutinized by means of the Z-scan method at a beam excitation wavelength of 750 nm by a femtosecond laser with different excitation intensities ranging from 64 to 140 GW cm^-2. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ⁽³⁾) of the order of 10^-14 esu was obtained from the measured Z-scan data. Both the metallogels exhibit positive nonlinear refraction and reverse saturable (RSA) absorption at high-intensity excitation. Co(II) and Ni(II) metallogels show nonlinear refractive indices (n₂^I) of (3.619 ± 0.146) × 10^-6 cm² GW^-1 and (3.472 ± 0.102) × 10^-6 cm² GW^-1, respectively, and two photon absorption coefficients (β) of (1.503 ± 0.045) × 10^-1 cm GW^-1 and (1.381 ± 0.029) × 10^-1 cm GW^-1 at an excitation intensity of 140 GW cm^-2. We also studied the optical limiting properties with a limiting threshold of 9.57 mJ cm^-2. Therefore, both metallogels can be considered promising materials for photonic devices: for instance, for optical switching and optical limiting.

Efficient artificial light-harvesting systems based on aggregation-induced emission in supramolecular gels

Based on a new designed acyl hydrazone gelator (G2), we developed a supramolecular organogel in glycol with two different hydrophobic fluorescent dyes, namely rhodamine B (RhB) and acridine red, as acceptors. Both the G2@gel-RhB and G2@gel-acridine red systems showed high levels of energy-transfer efficiency and high fluorescence quantum yields.

A multi-responsive supramolecular heparin-based biohybrid metallogel constructed by controlled self-assembly based on metal–ligand, host–guest and electrostatic interactions

A new family of supramolecular heparin-based biohybrid metallogels with multiple stimuli-responsive behaviours was constructed through the controlled self-assembly based on three orthogonal interactions within a single system.

Nanosheets and Hydrogels Formed by 2 nm Metal-Organic Cages with Electrostatic Interaction

We report the mechanism of hydrogel formation in dilute aqueous solutions (>15 mg/mL) by 2 nm metal-organic cages (MOCs). Experiments and all-atom simulations confirm that with the addition of small electrolytes, the MOCs self-assemble into 2D nanosheets via counterion-mediated attraction because of their unique molecular structure and charge distribution as well as σ-π interactions. The stiff nanosheets are difficult to bend into 3-D hollow, spherical blackberry type structures, as observed in many other macroion systems. Instead, they stay in solution and their very large excluded volumes lead to gelation at low (∼1.5 wt %) MOC concentrations, with additional help from hydrophobic and partial π-π interactions similar to the gelation of graphene oxides.

Metal-Free White Light-Emitting Fluorescent Material Based on Simple Pillar[5]arene-tripodal Amide System and Theoretical Insights on Its Assembly and Fluorescent Properties

The booming of host-guest assembly-based supramolecular chemistry provides abundant ways to construct functional systems and materials. Attracted by the important application prospect of white light emission and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials, herein, we report an efficient way for fabricating metal-free white light-emitting AIE materials through the supramolecular assembly of simple organic compounds: methoxyl pillar[5]arene (MP5) and tri-(pyridine-4-ylamido)benzene (TAP). By host-guest assembly, MP5 and TAP formed a supramolecular polymer (MP5-T); meanwhile, the MP5-T xerogel powder emitted white light at CIE coordinates (0.29 and 0.29). The supramolecular assembly and white light-emitting mechanisms were carefully investigated by experiments as well as quantum chemical calculations including density functional theory (DFT), reduced density gradient, electrostatic surface potential, independent gradient model, and frontier molecular orbital (highest-occupied molecular orbital-lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital) analyses. Interestingly, according to the experiments and calculations, the supramolecular assembly is critical in the white light-emitting phenomenon. Moreover, in this work, the quantum chemical calculations could not only support experimental phenomena but also provide deep understanding and visualized presentation of the assembly and emission mechanism. In addition, the obtained MP5-T solid powder could serve as a novel and easy means to make material for white light-emitting devices.

Sierpiński Pyramids by Molecular Entanglement

Planar, terpyridine-based metal complexes with the Sierpiński triangular motif and alkylated corners undergo a second self-assembly event to give megastructural Sierpiński pyramids; assembly is driven by the facile lipophilic-lipophilic association of the alkyl moieties and complementary perfect fit of the triangular building blocks. Confirmation of the 3D, pyramidal structures was verified and supported by a combination of TEM, AFM, and multiscale simulation techniques.

Soft Materials with Diverse Suprastructures via the Self-Assembly of Metal-Organic Complexes

Inspired by assemblies in the natural world, researchers have prepared diverse suprastructures with distinct spatial arrangements by artificial self-assembly, including micelles, vesicles, ribbons, films, fibers, and tubes. The field of assembly is undergoing a transition from single-component to multicomponent assembly and single-step to multistep processing. Control over the size, shape, and composition of these building blocks has enabled the formation of suprastructures with substantial structural diversity. More importantly, harnessing noncovalent interactions to create suprastructures in a controlled manner will lead to a better understanding of the formation of complex self-organized patterns. However, for the construction of multiscale self-assemblies with controllable shapes and functions, the selection of a suitable protocol remains challenging. Coordination-driven self-assembly provides a bottom-up approach to construct various metal-organic complexes (MOCs), which could be further used as building blocks with controllable shapes and sizes. Despite the tremendous progress made in the design of MOC-based supramolecular materials, most of these MOCs have dimensions of only several nanometers, and investigations of these structures rely on the characterization of their crystal structure. However, most of the functional suprastructures in living organisms have dimensions ranging from microns to centimeters and have the form of soft materials. Thus, obtaining MOC-based highly ordered materials of larger size remains a challenge. This Account focuses on our recent advances in the construction of soft suprastructure materials with MOCs. A series of functionalized MOCs was first constructed through coordination-driven self-assembly. Then, further self-assembly of the as-prepared MOCs gave rise to the formation of higher-order structures. By changing the functional groups in the acceptors and donors in the MOCs, different suprastructures, including nanospheres, nanodiamonds, nanorods, nanofibers, membranes, films, and gels, were prepared. These studies suggest that using MOCs as building blocks is a highly efficient strategy to achieve complex architectures and functional materials for the development of desired MOC-based soft materials with high precision and fidelity.

Porphyrin-functionalized coordination star polymers and their potential applications in photodynamic therapy

We present a new family of porphyrin-functionalized coordination star polymers prepared through combination of coordination-driven self-assembly and post-assembly polymerization. Their self-assembly behaviour in water and potential for photodynamic therapy were demonstrated.

Discrete and Polymeric Self-Assembled Palladium(II) Complexes as Supramolecular Gelators

Supramolecular gels prepared from low-molecular-weight gelators have been extensively explored. However, the exploitation of discrete or polymeric metal complexes as gelators is a relatively recent trend. The synthesis of self-assembled coordination complexes from palladium(II) and selected ligands is well established, but the potential of these complexes as gelators is a less explored treasure. Herein we focus on the gelation abilities of some self-assembled palladium(II) complexes and the resulting unique properties. First, discrete complexes with PdL, PdL₂ , Pd₂ L, Pd₂ L₂ , Pd₂ L₄ , and Pd₃ L₆ compositions are discussed. Second, gelation behavior promoted by coordination-polymer-like gelators formed in situ is explored. These gel samples have been employed in catalysis and the uptake of organic and dye molecules from the solution and gas phases. It is concluded that untapped unique properties can be realized by further exploration of designer palladium(II) complexes.

Construction of Stimuli-Responsive Functional Materials via Hierarchical Self-Assembly Involving Coordination Interactions

Supramolecular self-assembly, which creates the ordered structures as a result of spontaneous organization of building blocks driven by noncovalent interactions (NCIs), is ubiquitous in nature. Recently, it has become increasingly clear that nature often builds up complex structures by employing a hierarchical self-assembly (HSA) strategy, in which the components are brought together in a stepwise process via multiple NCIs. Inspired by the dedicated biological structures in nature, HSA has been widely explored to construct well-defined assemblies with increasing complexity. The employment of direct metal-ligand bonds to drive the formation of discrete metallosupramolecular architectures has proven to be a highly efficient strategy to prepare structurally diverse architectures like two-dimensional (2-D) polygons and three-dimensional (3-D) polyhedra with well-defined shapes, sizes, and geometries. Such well-defined organometallic assemblies provide an ideal platform for designing novel artificial supramolecular systems with the increasing complexity though HSA. The presence of a well-defined organometallic scaffold brings an additional dimension to the final nanoscale structures. Moreover, the multilevel dynamic nature of hierarchical self-assemblies brings more structural and functional possibilities of resultant supramolecular systems. This Account will focus on our recent advance on construction of stimuli-responsive functional materials through HSA involving coordination interactions. In our study, a series of functionalized metallacycles were first constructed through coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA). Then, the secondary noncovalent interaction sites were integrated within the functionalized metallacycle system via either preassembly or postassembly approach. Different segments, such as alkyl chains, dendrimers, cholesteryl moiety, covalent macrocycles, and even polymeric fragments, which could provide hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions, van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, CH-π and π-π interactions, and host-guest interactions, have been utilized to provide the secondary NCIs. Further self-assembly of functionalized metallacycles gives rise to the formation of complex higher-order structures driven by other NCIs by taking advantages of orthogonal property of coordination bonds with other NCIs. By changing the type of additional NCIs embodied in building blocks, different supramolecular architectures, such as the ordered nanostructures, supramolecular polymers and gels, fluorescent materials and sensors, have been successfully prepared with the tailored chemical and physical properties. In particular, the dynamic nature of coordination bonds as well as other NCIs endows final assemblies with stimuli-responsive functions. Collectively, our studies suggest that combining coordination and other NCIs in a well-defined and precise manner is a highly efficient strategy to achieve the complex architectures and functional materials. Therefore, it is very promising to develop the desired functional materials with high precision and fidelity by employing HSA involving coordination interactions.

Electrospinning of in situ crosslinked recombinant human collagen peptide/chitosan nanofibers for wound healing

Electrospun collagen nanofibers are effective for wound healing; however, many problems, such as the tedious preparation process, weak strength and poor structure integration, limit further applications. In this study, recombinant human collagen (RHC) peptides and a simple one-step crosslinking strategy were used to prepare RHC/chitosan nanofibers. With the nonpathogenic, water-soluble RHC and a mild electrospinning solvent, in situ crosslinked nanofibers (S-CN) not only simplified the preparation procedure but also maintained a more integrated morphology. Compared with the immersed crosslinked nanofibers (I-CN), S-CN showed better performance in moisture retention, degradation and mechanical strength tests. In vitro cell proliferation, morphology and RT-PCR studies confirmed that fibroblasts presented better activities on nanofibers crosslinked in situ. Importantly, after treating with the nanofibers, rapid epidermidalization and angiogenesis were observed in an SD rat scalding model. All these data suggest that electrospun RHC/chitosan nanofibers crosslinked in situ are an ideal candidate that can be used for wound healing applications.

Our Expedition in Linear Neutral Platinum-Acetylide Complexes: The Preparation of Micro/nanostructure Materials, Complicated Topologies, and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

During the past few decades, the construction of various kinds of platinum-acetylide complexes has attracted considerable attention, because of their wide applications in photovoltaic cells, non-linear optics, and bio-imaging materials. Among these platinum-acetylide complexes, the linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes, due to their attractive properties, such as well-defined linear geometry, synthetic accessibility, and intriguing photoproperties, have emerged as a rising star in this field. In this personal account, we will discuss how we entered the field of linear neutral platinum-acetylide chemistry and what we found in this field. The preparation of various types of linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes and their applications in the areas of micro/nanostructure materials, complicated topologies, and dye-sensitized solar cells will be summarized in this account.

Pyrazine-based donor tectons: synthesis, self-assembly and characterization

A Conductive Self-Healing Hybrid Gel Enabled by Metal-Ligand Supramolecule and Nanostructured Conductive Polymer

Self-healing materials emerge as a fascinating class of materials important for various technological applications. However, achieving the synergistic characteristics of high conductivity, room-temperature self-healing ability, and decent mechanical properties still remains a critical challenge. Here we develop for the first time a hybrid gel based on self-assembled supramolecular gel and nanostructured polypyrrole that synergizes the dynamic assembly/disassembly nature of metal-ligand supramolecule and the conductive nanostructure of polypyrrole hydrogel and exhibits features of high conductivity (12 S m(-1)), appealing mechanical and electrical self-healing property without any external stimuli, and enhanced mechanical strength and flexibility. The attractive characteristics of the hybrid gel are further demonstrated by a flexible yet self-healable electrical circuit. Our work shows the great potential of self-healing hybrid gel system in flexible electronics and provides a useful strategy to design multifunctional self-healing materials.

Recent advances in the construction of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages via coordination-driven self-assembly

During the last few years, the construction of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages has attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications in fluorescence detection of metal ions, anions, or small molecules, mimicking complicated natural photo-processes, and preparing photoelectric devices, etc. This perspective focuses on the recent advances in the construction of a variety of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages via coordination-driven self-assembly. In addition, the fluorescence properties and the applications of these organometallic architectures have also been discussed.

Nanoscale metallogel via self-assembly of self-assembled trinuclear coordination rings: multi-stimuli-responsive soft materials

A multi-stimuli-responsive metallogel is obtained by the self-assembly of an already self-assembled trinuclear palladium(ii) based coordination ring of the rare M₃L₆ composition.
