Abstract
A new group of BF3 complexing phosphate/phosphonate ionic liquids (ILs) [Emim][X(BF3)2] (X=dimethyl phosphate, diethyl phosphate, methyl phosphonate, and ethyl phosphonate) were synthesized and characterized. Key thermophysical properties of the new complex ionic liquids, including density, viscosity, conductivity, surface tension, solid-liquid phase transition, and thermal stability were determined and compared with those of [Emim][X]. Some other important thermophysical properties such as isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, molecular volume, standard molar entropy, and lattice potential energy were obtained from measured density data, and the free volume was estimated by a linear equation presented in this article, while critical temperature, normal boiling temperature, and enthalpy of vaporization were estimated from measured surface tension and density data. Furthermore, Fragility study shows that [Emim][X(BF3)2] should be considered as fragile liquids, while [Emim][X] could be considered as extremely fragile liquids. The ionicity of [Emim][X(BF3)2] was predicted by Walden rule, and the result shows that these ILs fit well with Walden law. The key features of these complex ILs are their extremely low glass transition (-95.33~-98.46 °C) without melting, considerably low viscosities (33.876~58.117 mPa ⋅ s), and high values of free volume fraction (comparable to [Omim][BF4], [Emim][NTf2], and [Emim][TCB]).

Abstract
We reported recently that two imidazolium room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) exhibit the direct piezoelectric effect (J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2023, 14, 2731-2735). We have subsequently investigated several other RTILs with pyrrolidinium and imidazolium cations and tetrafluoroborate and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anions in an effort to gain insight into the generality and mechanism of the effect. All the RTILs studied exhibit the direct piezoelectric effect, with a magnitude (d33) and threshold force that depend on the structures of both the cation and anion. The structure-dependence and existence of a threshold force for the piezoelectric effect are consistent with a pressure-induced liquid-to-crystalline solid phase transition in the RTILs, and this is consistent with experimental X-ray diffraction data.

Abstract
Due to the improved thermophysical characteristics of ionic liquids (ILs), such as their strong ionic conductivity, negligible vapor pressure, and thermal stability at high temperatures, they are being looked at viable contender for future heat transfer fluids. Additionally, the dispersing nanoparticles can further improve the thermophysical characteristics and thermal performance of ionic liquids, which is one of the emerging research interests to increase the heat transfer rates of the thermal devices. The latest investigations about the utilization of ionic liquid nanofluids as a heat transfer fluid is summarized in this work. These summaries are broken down into three types: (a) the thermophysical parameters including thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and specific heat of ionic liquids (base fluids), (b) the thermophysical properties like thermal conductivity, viscosity, density, and viscosity of ionic liquids based nanofluids (IL nanofluids), and (iii) utilization of IL nanofluids as a heat transfer fluid in the thermal devices. The techniques for measuring the thermophysical characteristics and the synthesis of IL nanofluids are also covered. The suggestions for potential future research directions for IL nanofluids are summarized.

Abstract
A set of mixed-substituted potassium alkylcyano- and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single-crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X-ray diffraction experiments. The 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+ -RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+ -RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+ -ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine-free borate anions, in general.

Abstract
Room temperature ionic liquids of cyclic sulfonimide anions ncPFSI (ring size: n = 4-6) with the cations [EMIm]+ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMIm]+ (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [BMPL]+ (BMPL = 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium) have been synthesized. Their solid-state structures have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their physicochemical properties (thermal behaviour and stability, dynamic viscosity and specific conductivity) have been assessed. In addition, the ion diffusion was studied by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. The decisive influence of the ring size of the cyclic sulfonimide anions on the physicochemical properties of the ILs has been revealed. All ILs show different properties compared to those of the non-cyclic TFSI anion. While these differences are especially distinct for ILs with the very rigid 6cPFSI anion, the 5-membered ring anion 5cPFSI was found to result in ILs with relatively similar properties. The difference between the properties of the TFSI anion and the cyclic sulfonimide anions has been rationalized by the rigidity (conformational lock) of the cyclic sulfonimide anions. The comparison of selected IL properties was augmented by MD simulations. These highlight the importance of π+-π+ interactions between pairs of [EMIm]+ cations in the liquid phase. The π+-π+ interactions are evident for the solid state from the molecular structures of the [EMIm]+-ILs with the three cyclic imide anions determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The synthesis and detailed characterization of low-viscosity room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and [BnPh3P]+ salts with the cyano(fluoro)borate anions [BF(CN)3]- (MFB), [BF2(CN)2]- (DFB), and [BF3(CN)]- as well as the new mixed-substituted anion [BFH(CN)2]- (FHB) is described. The RTILs with [EMIm]+ or [BMPL]+ as countercations were obtained in yields of up to 98% from readily available alkali metal salts and in high purities that allow application in electrochemical devices. Trends in thermal stability, melting and freezing behavior, density, electrochemical stability, dynamic viscosity, specific conductivity and ion diffusivity have been assessed and compared to those of the related tetracyanoborate- and cyano(hydrido)borate-RTILs. The crystal structure analysis of the [BnPh3P]+ salts of [BFn(CN)4-n]- (n = 0-4), [BHn(CN)4-n]- (n = 1-3) and [BFH(CN)2]- provided experimental access to anion volumina that together with ion molecular mass, electrostatic potential, shape and chemical stability have been correlated to physicochemical properties. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the [EMIm]+-ILs and potassium or sodium salts was studied.

Abstract
Rhamnolipids are biosurfactants that have obtained wide industrial and environmental interests with their biodegradability and great surface activity. Besides their important roles as surfactants, they are found to function as a new type of glycolipid-based protic ionic liquids (ILs)─glyonic liquids (GLs). GLs are reported to have impressive physicochemical properties, especially superionic conductivity, and it was reported in experiments that specific ion selections and the fraction of water content have a strong effect on the conductivity. Also, the shape of the conductivity curve as a function of water fraction in GLs is interesting with a sharp increase first and a long plateau. We related the conductivities to the three-dimensional (3D) networks composed of -OH inside the GLs utilizing classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The amount and size of these networks vary with both ion species and water fractions. Before reaching the first hydration layer, the -OH networks with higher projection/box length ratios indicate better conductivity; after reaching the first hydration layer and forming continuous structures, the conductivity retains with more water molecules participating in the continuous networks. Therefore, networks are found to be a qualitative predictor of actual conductivity. This is explained by the analysis of the atomic structures, including radial distribution function, fraction free volume, anion conformations, and hydrogen bond occupancies, of GLs and their water mixtures under different chemical conditions.

Abstract
A series of 1,2-dimethylimidazolium ionic liquids bearing a hexadecyl alkyl chain are thoroughly examined via X-ray crystallography. The crystal structures reveal several key variations in the non-covalent interactions in the lipid-like salts. Specifically, distinct cation-cation π interactions are observed when comparing the bromide and iodide structures. Changing the anion to bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (Tf2N-) changes these cation-cation π interactions with anion⋯π interactions. Additionally, several well-defined geometries of the cations are noted based on torsion and core-plane angles of the alkyl chains. Hirshfeld surface analysis is used to distinguish the interactions and geometries in the solid state, helping to reveal characteristic structural fingerprints for the compounds. The solid-state structures of the ionic liquids are correlated with the solution-state structures through UV-vis spectroscopic studies, further emphasizing the importance of the π interactions in the formation of aggregates. Finally, we investigated the thermal properties of the ionic liquids, revealing complex phase transitions for the iodide-containing species. These phase transitions are further rationalized via the analysis of the data gathered from the structures of the other crystallized salts.

Abstract
Understanding the factors that govern gas absorption in ionic liquids is critical to the development of high-capacity solvents for catalysis, electrochemistry, and gas separations. Here, we report experimental probes of liquid structure that provide insights into how free volume impacts the O2 absorption properties of ionic liquids. Specifically, we establish that isothermal compressibility─measured rapidly and accurately through small-angle X-ray scattering─reports on the size distribution of transient voids within a representative series of ionic liquids and is correlated with O2 absorption capacity. Additionally, O2 absorption capacities are correlated with thermal expansion coefficients, reflecting the beneficial effect of weak intermolecular interactions in ionic liquids on free volume and gas absorption capacity. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the void size distribution─in particular, the probability of forming larger voids within an ionic liquid─has a greater impact on O2 absorption than the total free volume. These results establish relationships between the ionic liquid structure and gas absorption properties that offer design strategies for ionic liquids with high gas solubilities.

Abstract
The thermal range of the stability of Ionic Liquid Crystal (ILC) phases of imidazolium ILCs, and the type of the mesophase itself are affected by several molecular structural features, the two prominent ones being the alkyl chain length and the counter-anion. Hydration is also very important: monohydrate samples of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium halides have a higher clearing point and a wider thermal range of the stability of the ionic smectic phase, compared with the analogous anhydrous sample. To understand the reasons, at a microscopic level, for such increased stability due to hydration, we run classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of a typical ionic liquid crystal, 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, and of its monohydrate form. We tested a full-charge non-polarizable force field and a scaled-charge version having the total charge of the ions scaled by a factor of 0.80. Comparison of the structural and dynamic properties with available experimental data reveals that the scaling of the charge by a factor of 0.80 results in a good agreement between simulated and experimental data and it sheds light on the microscopic mechanism responsible for the increased stability of the monohydrated phase. A hydrogen-bond network between water and the chloride anion is established in the ionic layer which increases the stability of the ionic layer; this in turn increases the nano-segregation between the ionic and hydrophobic layers which eventually produce an increased order of the alkylic layer as well.

Abstract
X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to investigate the rotational diffusion of a stable, positively charged nitroxide 4-trimethylammonium-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (Cat-1) in a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) having alkyl chain lengths from two to eight carbons. The rotation of Cat-1 is anisotropic with the preferential axis of rotation along the NO• moiety. The Stokes-Einstein-Debye law describes the mean rotational correlation time of Cat-1, assuming that the hydrodynamic radius is smaller than the van der Waals radius of the probe. This implies that the probe rotates freely, experiencing slip boundary condition, which is solvent-dependent. The rotational correlation time of Cat-1 in RTILs can very well be fitted to a power-law functionality with a singular temperature, which suggests that the apparent activation energy of rotation exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. Compared to the rotation of perdeuterated 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine-1-oxyl (pDTO), which is neutral, the rotation of Cat-1 is several times slower. The rotational anisotropy, the ratio of the rotational times of pDTO and Cat-1, and the apparent activation energy indicate the transition from a homogeneously globular structure to a spongelike structure when the alkyl chain has four carbons, which is also observed in molecular dynamics computational studies. For the first time, we have been able to show that the rotational correlation time of a solute molecule can be analyzed in terms of the Cohen-Turnbull free volume theory. The Cohen-Turnbull theory fully describes the rotation of Cat-1 in all ionic liquids in the measured temperature range.

Abstract
In the last few years, ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of extensive studies concerning the relationship between structure and properties and how this impacts their application. Despite a large number of studies, several topics remain controversial or not fully answered, such as: the existence of ion pairs, the concept of free volume and the effect of water and its implications in the modulation of ILs physicochemical properties. In this paper, we present a critical review of state-of-the-art literature regarding structure–property relationship of ILs, we re-examine analytical theories on the structure–property correlations and present new perspectives based on the existing data. The interrelation between transport properties (viscosity, diffusion, conductivity) of IL structure and free volume are analysed and discussed at a molecular level. In addition, we demonstrate how the analysis of microscopic features (particularly using NMR-derived data) can be used to explain and predict macroscopic properties, reaching new perspectives on the properties and application of ILs.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are known for their high ability to capture CO2. However, the mechanism of CO2 solubility into ILs during their initial interaction remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed the initial dissolution of CO2 into an IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C4min] [NTf2]) by measuring its solubility using a combination of a molecular beam and a flowing liquid jet sheet beam (FJSB) and the King and Wells method (KW method). The temperature dependence of the initial dissolution probability indicates that the solubility of CO2 in the IL [C4min] [NTf2] increases with increasing temperature. This result is not consistent with what has been reported in an equilibrium state. The initial dissolution probability was well-fitted by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equation, which describes the dynamical cage structure in IL systems. We also find that the initial dissolution probability was correlated to the cage lifetime and correlation length. The simple model of CO2 dissolution into an IL with the cage model was implemented to explain the experimental results in this study. Our results indicate that the initial dissolution of CO2 into the IL corresponds to a direct solution and not an uptake process.

Abstract
Ionic liquid (IL) mixtures enable the design of fluids with finely tuned structural and physicochemical properties for myriad applications. In order to rationally develop and design IL mixtures with the desired properties, a thorough understanding of the structural origins of their physicochemical properties and the thermodynamics of mixing needs to be developed. To elucidate the structural origins of the excess molar volume within IL mixtures containing ions with different alkyl chain lengths, 3 IL mixtures containing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ILs have been explored in a joint small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and 129Xe NMR study. The apolar domains of the IL mixtures were shown to possess similar dimensions to the largest alkyl chain of the mixture with the size evolution determined by whether the shorter alkyl chain was able to interact with the apolar domain. 129Xe NMR results illustrated that the origin of excess molar volume in these mixtures was due to fluctuations within these apolar domains arising from alkyl chain mismatch, with the formation of a greater number of smaller voids within the IL structure. These results indicate that free volume effects for these types of mixtures can be predicted from simple considerations of IL structure and that the structural basis for the formation of excess molar volume in these mixtures is substantially different to IL mixtures formed of different types of ions.

Abstract
The formation of ionic liquid (IL) mixtures has been proposed as an approach to rationally fine-tune the physicochemical properties of ILs for a variety of applications. However, the effects of forming such mixtures on the resultant properties of the liquids are only beginning to be understood. Towards a more complete understanding of both the thermodynamics of mixing ILs and the effect of mixing these liquids on their structures and physicochemical properties, the spatial arrangement and free volume of IL mixtures containing the common [C4C1im]+ cation and different anions have been systematically explored using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and 129Xe NMR techniques. Anion size has the greatest effect on the spatial arrangement of the ILs and their mixtures in terms of the size of the non-polar domains and inter-ion distances. It was found that differences in coulombic attraction between oppositely charged ions arising from the distribution of charge density amongst the atoms of the anion also significantly influences these inter-ion distances. PALS and 129Xe NMR results pertaining to the free volume of these mixtures were found to strongly correlate with each other despite the vastly different timescales of these techniques. Furthermore, the excess free volumes calculated from each of these measurements were in excellent agreement with the excess volumes of mixing measured for the IL mixtures investigated. The correspondence of these techniques indicates that the static and dynamic free volume of these liquid mixtures are strongly linked. Consequently, fluxional processes such as hydrogen bonding do not significantly contribute to the free volumes of these liquids compared to the spatial arrangement of ions arising from their size, shape and coulombic attraction. Given the relationship between free volume and transport properties such as viscosity and conductivity, these results provide a link between the structures of IL mixtures, the thermodynamics of mixing and their physicochemical properties.

Abstract
The solubility of n-butane and 2-methylpropane (isobutane) in three ionic liquids - 1-(2-methylpropyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [(2mC3)C1im][Ntf2], 1-(3-methylbutyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [(3mC4)C1im][Ntf2] and 1-methyl-3-pentylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C5C1im][Ntf2] - has been measured at atmospheric pressure from 303 to 343 K. Isobutane is less soluble than n-butane in all the ionic liquids. Henry's constant values range from 13.8 × 10(5) Pa for n-butane in [C5C1im][Ntf2] at 303 K to 64.5 × 10(5) Pa for isobutane in [(2mC3)C1im][Ntf2] at 343 K. The difference in solubility between the two gases can be explained by a more negative enthalpy of solvation for n-butane. A structural analysis of the pure solvents and of the solutions of the gases, probed by molecular dynamics simulations, could explain the differences found in the systems: (i) the nonpolar domains of the ionic liquids accommodate better the long and more flexible n-butane solute; (ii) the small differences in solubility of each gas in the ionic liquids with the same number of carbon atoms in the alkyl side-chains are explained by the absence of large structural differences in the pure solvents. In all cases, the structural analysis of the four ionic liquids confirms that the studied gases can act as probes of the molecular structure of the ionic liquids, the simulations being always compatible with the experimental solubility data.

Abstract
Based on temperature (T) dependent crystal structure data of seven organic salts, a radii-based scheme for the calculation of the van der Waals volume (V(vdw)) is analyzed. The obtained volumes (V(vdw,r), r=radius-based) are nearly T independent. An ion volume partitioning scheme is proposed by fixing the anion volumes of [Cl](-), [Br](-), [I](-), [BF(4)](-), [PF(6)](-), [OTf](-) and [NTf(2)](-). The van der Waals volumes (V(vdw,r) (+/-)) of 48 ions are established, with low standard deviations (0.2-3.6 Å(3), 0.1-4.5 % of V(vdw,r) (+/-)). The ion volumes are independent of the counterion and one crystal structure already suffices for their derivation. Correlations of the viscosity with V(vdw,r) via a Litovitz ansatz and our recently derived Arrhenius-type approach prove that these volumes are suitable for the volume-based description and prediction of IL properties. The corresponding correlation coefficient for the latter is R(2)=0.86 for 40 ILs (354 data points) in the T range of 253-373 K.
