Synergistic enhancement mediated sensitive SERS-based immunoassay of PSA using versatile PDMS@AgNPs@ZIF-67 biomimetic substrates

Among various biomimetic polymer materials, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stands out as an ideal matrix for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to its unique intrinsic Raman signal and tenacity. In order to realize the precise detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), we proposed a sandwich-type SERS-active immunostructure composed of PDMS@silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)@ZIF-67 biomimetic film as the immunosubstrate and gold nanorods (Au NRs) as immunoprobes. Due to the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement facilitated by biomimetic surfaces and chemical enhancement achieved by ZIF-67, this structure enabled an ultrasensitive and selective detection of PSA across a broad range from 10-3 to 10-9 mg/mL. The achieved limit of detection was as low as 3.0 × 10-10 mg/mL. Particularly, the intrinsic Raman signal of PDMS matrix at 2905 cm-1 was employed as a potential internal standard (IS) in the detection, achieving a high coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.996. This multifunctional SERS substrate-mediated immunoassay holds vast potential for early diagnosis of prostate cancer, offering promising prospects for clinical applications.

Co2+-adsorbed chitosan-grafted-poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel as peroxymonosulfate activator for effective dye degradation

In this work, chitosan-grafted-poly(acrylic acid) (CS-g-PAA) was synthesized for use as a Co2+ adsorbent and circularly utilized as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye. CS-g-PAA demonstrated 3.7 times higher adsorption capacity toward Co2+ than pristine chitosan. The impact of the adsorption conditions was evaluated. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process. Under optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity of CS-g-PAA for Co2+ was 212 mg/g. The Co2+-adsorbed CS-g-PAA hydrogel was further utilized in the RhB degradation process. The effects of catalyst dosage, initial RhB concentration, pH, and the coexistence of anions on the degradation of RhB were studied. The hydrogel catalyst could remove 98 % of RhB within 5 min, at a degradation rate of 0.624 per min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and the radical scavenger experiment suggested that SO4•-, HO•, 1O2, and O2•- were involved in the degradation. Furthermore, when tested in various water systems, high degradation efficiencies of 98 % were attained after 20 min. The hydrogel catalyst performed excellent degradation over ten cycles without any chemical recovery processes. Moreover, high degradation efficiencies were observed between 95 % and 98 % when tested with other dyes.

Adsorptive stripping voltammetric sensor based on Cd zeolitic imidazole framework-67 for electrochemical detection of sarin simulant

A selective and reliable modified glassy carbon sensor, based on a 1.0% Cd zeolitic imidazole framework-67 modified glassy carbon sensor (GCS2), has been developed for ultrasensitive detection of dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) in human biological fluid. The synthesis of porous nanoparticles of Cd zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (Cd ZIF-67) was carried out via the hydrothermal method. The resulting Cd ZIF-67 powder emerges with good crystallinity, a rhombic dodecahedral morphology with particle size in the range 300 ~ 500 nm, and a specific surface area of 1780 m2·g-1. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor exhibited superior performance in the detection of DMMP with two linearity ranges of 0.02-2.0 nM and 2.0-9.0 nM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 pM. The fabricated sensor exhibited good reliability, long-term stability, and repeatability, which are favourable attributes for electroanalytical detection. In addition, the fabricated sensor displayed superior performance without significant interference during the assay of DMMP in a biological fluid (human serum sample) within two linearity ranges of 0.1-1.0 nM and 1.0-6.0 nM and a LOD of 0.03 nM.

Synthesis of core-heteroshell structure for ZIF-67/VTM and its efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate in treatment of levofloxacin from an aqueous solution

A core-heteroshell structural magnetic composite of ZIF-67/Vanadium-titanium magnetite (VTM) was successfully synthesized through a feasible solvothermal method and efficiently used in activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment of levofloxacin (LVF) in an aqueous solution. The catalytic activity of the ZIF-67/VTM composite in LVF degradation was thoroughly evaluated, demonstrating the LVF removal rate could reach up to 93.3% within 60 min at ZIF-67/VTM composite dosage of 100 mg/L, PMS concertation of 75 mg/L, and the natural pH of 6.4. It is quite interesting that the carbon organic skeleton (in the ZIF-67 shell) have accelerated the internal electron transformation rate of the ZIF-67/VTM composite, thus efficiently promoting the O-O band (in PMS) breakage and the redox cycle of cobalt, further favoring the free radicals generation. The quenching experiments and EPR analysis results demonstrated that ·SO₄^- would play a crucial role in the LVF degradation process. Surprisingly, we have found that the introduction of Cl^- (at some certain dosage) would not always decrease the LVF degradation ratio, for a new reactive oxygen species (singlet oxygen) was emerged in this system. What's more, the ZIF-67 (as the wrapping structure) could stabilize the VTM (the inner structure) in changing reaction conditions, prompting a good adaptability at a wider pH range (3-10) for inhibiting the leaching of various metal ions into the aqueous solution. This novel ZIF-67/VTM composite could provide new ideas and routes for the removal of emerging pollutants from an aqueous solution.

Boosted Li+ transference number enabled via interfacial engineering for dendrite-free lithium metal anodes

Adverse dendritic growth destabilizes Li metal anodes (LMAs), dramatically limiting the commercial applications of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, ZIF-67 with unsaturated coordinative metal sites is used to construct a protective coating to immobilize anions, which is capable of increasing the Li⁺ transference number (t_Li⁺) to mitigate the electrolyte concentration gradient in the vicinity of LMAs. In addition, the ZIF-67-based layer provides highly ordered ionic diffusion pathways, thus enabling dendrite-free Li deposition. With a considerable Li⁺ transference number of 0.57, ZIF-67-Cu@Li symmetric cells deliver a superior long-term performance (over 1000 h), and Li-O₂ full batteries with ZIF-67-Cu@Li electrodes display a high energy density of 1911.61 W h kg^-1.

Encapsulation of Ultrafine Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles within Multichamber Carbon Spheres by a Two-Step Double-Solvent Strategy for High-Performance Catalysts

Carbon-encapsulated metal-organic framework (MOF) composite is one kind of emerging new catalyst with high efficiency and has gained much attention. However, for this kind of composite catalyst, the key to improving its catalytic activity and durability is to realize the effective dispersion of MOF nanoparticles (NPs) and enhance the interaction between MOF NPs and the carbon matrix, which remain a significant challenge. Herein, ultrafine MOF NPs within multichamber carbon spheres (MOF@MCCS), for the first time, have been rationally synthesized by a two-step double-solvent strategy for high-performance catalysts. The precise loading of guest MOFs can be achieved by adjusting the multichamber structure and calcination extent of the multichamber polymer (MCP), and the particle size of MOFs can be as low as 13.2 nm. Due to the formation of abundant carbon defects in the pyrolysis process of MCPs, the special structure and synergistic effect make the material exhibit higher catalytic activity and durability. More importantly, this method is universal and can be extended to different MOF systems. The two-step double-solvent strategy not only prepares a unique structure of MOF@MCCS-type host-guest-encapsulated catalysts but also provides a new idea for the design of high-efficiency catalysts with better performance and higher durability.

Co-Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework@Cellulose Aerogels from Sugarcane Bagasse for Activating Peroxymonosulfate to Degrade P-Nitrophenol

An efficient, green and reusable catalyst for organic pollutant wastewater treatment has been a subject of intense research in recent decades due to the limitation of current technologies. Cellulose based aerogel composites are considered to be an especially promising candidate for next-generation catalytic material. This project was conducted in order to evaluate the behavior and ability of green and reusable sugarcane bagasse aerogels to remove P-Nitrophesnol from waste-water aqueous. Co-Zeolitic imidazolate framework@ sugarcane bagasse aerogels composite catalysts were successfully prepared via simple in situ synthesis. The structure of hybrid aerogels and their efficient catalyst in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was investigated. As a result, the hybrid aerogels/PMS system removed 98.5% of PNP (10 mg/L) within 60~70 min, while the traditional water treatment technology could not achieve this. In addition, through a free radical capture experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the degradation mechanism of PNP was investigated. Further research found that the hybrid aerogels can effectively activate PMS to produce sulfate (SO4• −) and hydroxyl (OH• ). Both of them contributed to the degradation of PNP, and SO4• − plays a crucial role in the degradative process. The most important feature of hybrid aerogels can be easily separated from the solution. The obtained results showed that the outer coating structure of cellulose can stabilize Co-ZIF and reduce the dissolution of cobalt ions under complex reaction conditions. Moreover, the prepared hybrid aerogels exhibit excellent reusability and are environmentally friendly with efficient catalytic efficiency. This work provides a new strategy for bagasse applications and material reusability.

Catalytic Activation of Cobalt Doping Sites in ZIF-71-Coated ZnO Nanorod Arrays for Enhancing Gas-Sensing Performance to Acetone

Developing acetone gas sensors with high sensitivity is crucially important for many applications including nonevasive diagnosis of diabetes. In the present work, cobalt doping is used to catalyze acetone gas-sensing reactions and hence to promote the sensitivity of acetone gas sensors. In order to achieve this, ZIF-71 metal-organic framework (MOF) is synthesized onto ZnO nanorod arrays with various concentrations of Co doping to form composite ZnO@ZIF-71(Co) sensors, which are then evaluated as sensing materials for acetone detection. Such sensors are shown to be sensitive to a trace amount of acetone (50 ppb) and have a massively enhanced response of about 100 times that for the undoped sensor at an optimal Co/Zn ratio and operating temperature. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption with density functional theory calculations are also made to assist in elucidating the catalytic gas-sensing mechanism for the Co-doped composite sensors ZnO@ZIF-71(Co). It demonstrated that the introduced Co site in ZIF-71(Co) can activate oxygen catalytically and increase active oxygen released to the ZnO surface. Meanwhile, the Co sites also promote the decomposition of acetone. These two steps together affect the catalytic oxidation of gases and finally enhance the sensitivity. This work introduces the catalytic effect of the MOF into the gas-sensing mechanism and provides an idea for broadening the application of MOF catalysis.

Encapsulating metal organic framework into hollow mesoporous carbon sphere as efficient oxygen bifunctional electrocatalyst

Applying metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in electrochemical systems is a currently emerging field owing to the rich metal nodes and highly specific surface area of MOFs. However, the problems for MOFs that need to be solved urgently are poor electrical conductivity and low ion transport. Here we present a facile in situ growth method for the rational synthesis of MOFs@hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCS) yolk–shell-structured hybrid material for the first time. The size of the encapsulated Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) is well controlled to 100 nm due to the spatial confinement effect of HMCS, and the electrical conductivity of ZIF-67 is also increased significantly. The ZIF@HMCS-25% hybrid material obtained exhibits a highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction activity with 0.823 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) half-wave potential and an even higher kinetic current density (J_K = 13.8 mA cm⁻²) than commercial Pt/C. ZIF@HMCS-25% also displays excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance and the overpotential of ZIF@HMCS-25% at 10 mA cm⁻² is 407 mV. In addition, ZIF@HMCS-25% is further employed as an air electrode for a rechargeable Zn–air battery, exhibiting a high power density (120.2 mW cm⁻² at 171.4 mA cm⁻²) and long-term charge/discharge stability (80 h at 5 mA cm⁻²). This MOFs@HMCS yolk–shell design provides a versatile method for the application of MOFs as electrocatalysts directly.

Broad Mid-Infrared Luminescence in a Metal-Organic Framework Glass

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses are a newly discovered family of melt-quenched glasses. Despite considerable progress in understanding the nature of MOF glasses, their photonic functionalities have not been found so far. Here, we report on the first breakthrough regarding the photonic functionalities of MOF glasses, that is, finding of the luminescence in melt-quenched MOF glasses. The finding was achieved on a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) series, that is, the ZIF-62 series: Zn_1-x Co _x (Im)_1.7(bIm)_0.3, x = 0, 0.1, and 0.5, where Co substitutes Zn in ZIF-62 forming single-phased solid solutions. Remarkably, we observed broadband mid-infrared (Mid-IR) luminescence (in the wavelength range of 1.5-4.8 μm) in both the crystalline and amorphous solid solutions. The intensity of the luminescence in ZIF glass is gradually enhanced by increasing the level of Co concentration. The observed Mid-IR emission originates from d-d transition of Co ions. The discovery of the luminescence in ZIF-62 glass may pave the way toward new photonic applications of bulk MOF glasses.

Novel catalytic micromotor of porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 for precise drug delivery

Micromotors hold promise as drug carriers for targeted drug delivery owing to the characteristics of self-propulsion and directional navigation. However, several defects still exist, including high cost, short movement life, low drug loading and slow release rate. Herein, a novel catalytic micromotor based on porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) synthesized by a greatly simplified wet chemical method assisted with ultrasonication is described as an efficient anticancer drug carrier. These porous micromotors display effective autonomous motion in hydrogen peroxide and long durable movement life of up to 90 min. Moreover, the multifunctional micromotor ZIF-67/Fe3O4/DOX exhibits excellent performance in precise drug delivery under external magnetic field with high drug loading capacity of fluorescent anticancer drug DOX up to 682 μg mg-1 owing to its porous nature, high surface area and rapid drug release based on dual stimulus of catalytic reaction and solvent effects. Therefore, these porous ZIF-67-based catalytic micromotors combine the domains of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and micomotors, thus developing potential resources for micromotors and holding great potential as label-free and precisely controlled high-quality candidates of drug delivery systems for biomedical applications.

In situ growth of ZIF-67 on a nickel foam as a three-dimensional heterogeneous catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation

ZIF-67 supported on marcoscale resin as an efficient and convenient heterogeneous catalyst for Oxone activation

While metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising catalysts for aqueous chemical oxidation, MOFs are typically prepared to be nanoscale and thus less practical for solution-based reactions. Although a few attempts have developed substrate-supported MOFs, many of them are still small and none of them are developed for sulfate-radical based chemical oxidation. However, there is still an urgent demand for developing substrate-supported MOFs which are catalytically effective, conveniently prepared, and simply recyclable. In this study, a macrosphere-supported MOF is successfully fabricated using ion exchange resins as readily available, stable and functionalized macrospheres. Via equilibrating resins with 2-MIM and cobalt ions sequentially, a cobalt-based MOF, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanocrystal, is grown on the resin surface via self-assembly. The resulting composite of ZIF "at" resin (abbreviated as ZIF@R) can preserve porous structures and metal coordination of ZIF-67, and also convenient features of resins, making it an advantageous heterogeneous catalyst for activating Oxone in water. As Rhodamine B (RhB) decolorization is employed as a model test for evaluating Oxone activation, ZIF@R is confirmed not only to activate Oxone for full decolorization of RhB but also to exhibit a much higher catalytic activity than Co₃O₄, the most typical catalyst for Oxone. ZIF@R could be also re-used to activate Oxone for RhB decolorization without activity loss. These results indicate that ZIF@R is a conveniently prepared and highly effective and stable macroscale catalyst for aqueous chemical oxidation reactions.

Extensive and selective adsorption of ZIF-67 towards organic dyes: Performance and mechanism

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) was prepared via electrochemical deposition, which was used to conduct adsorptive removal of various organic dyes. The results revealed that ZIF-67 displayed good adsorption performance towards some dyes due to its positive Zeta potential at wide pH range or some special functional groups like SO₃ of dyes. Also, ZIF-67 could separate some dyes from the matrix subjected to its preferential uptake towards certain dyes. The possible adsorption mechanism including electrostatic interactions, coordination interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions was proposed and tested.

MOF Thin Film-Coated Metal Oxide Nanowire Array: Significantly Improved Chemiresistor Sensor Performance

A strategy for combining metal oxides and metal-organic frameworks is proposed to design new materials for sensing volatile organic compounds, for the first time. The prepared ZnO@ZIF-CoZn core-sheath nanowire arrays show greatly enhanced performance not only on its selectivity but also on its response, recovery behavior, and working temperature.

Expanding applications of zeolite imidazolate frameworks in catalysis: synthesis of quinazolines using ZIF-67 as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst

A cobalt zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) was successfully synthesized and characterized, then used as an efficient catalyst in a reaction to form quinazoline products. ZIF-67 could be recovered and reused several times without significant degradation in its activity.
