Control of Photoisomerization Kinetics via Multistage Switching in Bimetallic Ru(II)-Terpyridine Complexes

In this study, we carried out detailed experimental and theoretical investigation on photophysical, electrochemical, and photoisomerization behaviors of a new array of luminescent binuclear Ru(II) complexes derived from a phenylene-vinylene-substituted terpyridyl ligand possessing RT lifetimes within 60.3-410.5 ns. The complexes experienced trans-to-cis isomerization in MeCN on irradiation with visible light, accompanied by significant changes in their absorption and emission spectral profiles. The reverse cis-to-trans process is also possible with the use of ultraviolet (UV) light. On conversion from trans to cis isomers, the emission intensity increases substantially, while for the reverse process, luminescence quenching occurs. Thus, "off-on" and "on-off" emission switching is facilitated upon treatment with visible and UV light alternatively. By the use of chemical oxidants (ceric ammonium nitrate and potassium permanganate) and reductants (metallic sodium) as well as light of appropriate wavelengths, multistate switching phenomena involving reversible oxidation-reduction and trans-cis isomerization have been achieved. Interestingly, the rate of this multistate photoswitching process becomes much faster compared to only two-state trans-cis isomerization of these complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT (TD-DFT) calculations are also performed to obtain a clear picture of the electronic environment of the complexes and also for the appropriate assignment of absorption and emission spectral bands.

Conformation of the hydrazo bond in new 2-methyl-3,5-dinitro-6-(2-phenylhydrazinyl)pyridine and its influence on the structural and optic properties - Quantum chemical DFT calculations

A new methyl-dinitro-phenylhydrazinyl-pyridine derivative [2-methyl-3,5-dinitro-6-(2-phenylhydrazinyl)pyridine] was synthesised and characterised by means of structural and spectroscopic measurements. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the compound crystallises in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/n, with two symmetry-independent molecules in the asymmetric unit with Z = 8. Hydrazo bridge C-NH-NH-C links two fragments composed of phenyl ring and pyridine unit substituted with methyl and nitro groups. Such a structure was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR studies as well as IR, Raman, UV-Vis, and emission spectra. The results were analysed using the quantum-chemical DFT calculations. The paper reports the vibrational characteristics and discusses dynamical properties of this moiety. The full set of the normal modes typical of the hydrazo bridge was identified and assigned to respective IR and Raman bands. The results of structural and spectroscopic studies were used to find the dependence between the conformation of the θ-NH-NH-ϕ system and its optic properties. The experimental UV-Vis and emission spectra were discussed in terms of the calculated singlet and triplet states that allowed assigning the unique spectral pattern originating from the electrons of the hydrazo-bridge system.

Mononuclear or Coordination Polymer Complexes? Both Are Possible for 3,6,9-Trioxaundecanedioic Acid

Investigating the driving forces leading to the formation of a specific supramolecular architecture among a wide spectrum of all the possibly obtainable structures is not an easy task. The contemporary literature provides several models for correctly predicting the thermodynamically accessible structures that can originate from a library of building blocks. Definitions are rigid by their very nature, so their application may sometimes require a shift in perspective. In the study presented herein, we describe the crystal structures of three metallo-supramolecular architectures assembled from deprotonated derivatives of 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid and Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). In the Mn(II) case, the complexation resulted in a complex of a discrete/heptacoordinated nature, whereas the other two structures appeared as helical polymers. To explain such an anomaly, in this work, we describe how the interplay between the flexibility of the ligand spacer and the number of coordinating atoms involved determines the divergent or convergent organisation of the final coordination architecture.

Structural dynamics of a thermally silent triiron(II) spin crossover defect grid complex

The structural evolution of spin crossover (SCO) complexes during their spin transition at equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium conditions needs to be understood to enable their successful utilisation in displays, actuators and memory components. In this study, diffraction techniques were employed to study the structural changes accompanying the temperature increase and the light irradiation of a defect [2 × 2] triiron(II) metallogrid of the form [FeII3LH2(HLH)2](BF4)4·4MeCN (FE3), LH = 3,5-bis{6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)}pyrazole. Although a multi-temperature crystallographic investigation on single crystals evidenced that the compound does not exhibit a thermal spin transition, the structural analysis of the defect grid suggests that the flexibility of the grid, provided by a metal-devoid vertex, leads to interesting characteristics that can be used for intermolecular cooperativity in related thermally responsive systems. Time-resolved photocrystallography results reveal that upon excitation with a ps laser pulse, the defect grid shows the first two steps of the out-of-equilibrium process, namely the photoinduced and elastic steps, occurring at the ps and ns time scales, respectively. Similar to a previously reported [2 × 2] tetrairon(II) metallogrid, FE3 exhibits a local distortion of the entire grid during the photoinduced step and a long-range distortion of the lattice during the elastic step. Although the lifetime of the pure photoinduced high spin (HS) state is longer in the tetranuclear grid than in the defect grid, suggesting that the global nuclearity plays a crucial role for the lifetime of the photoinduced species, the influence of the co-crystalising solvent on the lifetime of the photoinduced HS state remains unknown. This study sheds light on the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a thermally silent defect triiron SCO metallogrid.

Stability Constant and Potentiometric Sensitivity of Heavy Metal-Organic Fluorescent Compound Complexes: QSPR Models for Prediction and Design of Novel Coumarin-like Ligands

Industrial wastewater often consists of toxic chemicals and pollutants, which are extremely harmful to the environment. Heavy metals are toxic chemicals and considered one of the major hazards to the aquatic ecosystem. Analytical techniques, such as potentiometric methods, are some of the methods to detect heavy metals in wastewaters. In this work, the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) was applied using a range of machine learning techniques to predict the stability constant (logβ_ML) and potentiometric sensitivity (PS_ML) of 200 ligands in complexes with the heavy metal ions Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺. In result, the logβML models developed for four ions showed good performance with square correlation coefficients (R²) ranging from 0.80 to 1.00 for the training and 0.72 to 0.85 for the test sets. Likewise, the PSML displayed acceptable performance with an R² of 0.87 to 1.00 for the training and 0.73 to 0.95 for the test sets. By screening a virtual database of coumarin-like structures, several new ligands bearing the coumarin moiety were identified. Three of them, namely NEW02, NEW03, and NEW07, showed very good sensitivity and stability in the metal complexes. Subsequent quantum-chemical calculations, as well as physicochemical/toxicological profiling were performed to investigate their metal-binding ability and developability of the designed sensors. Finally, synthesis schemes are proposed to obtain these three ligands with major efficiency from simple resources. The three coumarins designed clearly demonstrated capability to be suitable as good florescent chemosensors towards heavy metals. Overall, the computational methods applied in this study showed a very good performance as useful tools for designing novel fluorescent probes and assessing their sensing abilities.

Bi-directional geometric constraints in the construction of giant dual-rim nanorings

In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, supramolecular macrocycles have attracted considerable attention due to their guest recognition and catalytic properties. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the construction of giant hollow macrocyclic structures using a bi-directional geometric constraint strategy. We investigated the structural design of two terpyridine-based tetratopic organic ligands, whose inner and outer rims have different angles. Compared to conventional strategies of self-assembly using single angular orientation building blocks that typically generate small macrocyclic objects or polymers, the mutual interaction between the different angles of the ligands could promote the formation of giant hollow macrocyclic supramolecular architectures. The self-assembly mechanism and hierarchical self-assembly of giant supramolecular macrocycles have been characterized by NMR, ESI-MS and TEM experiments. The strategy used in this study not only advances the design of giant 2D macrocycles with large inner diameters but also gives insights into the mechanism of formation of large structures.

Knotting matters: orderly molecular entanglements

Entangling strands in a well-ordered manner can produce useful effects, from shoelaces and fishing nets to brown paper packages tied up with strings. At the nanoscale, non-crystalline polymer chains of sufficient length and flexibility randomly form tangled mixtures containing open knots of different sizes, shapes and complexity. However, discrete molecular knots of precise topology can also be obtained by controlling the number, sequence and stereochemistry of strand crossings: orderly molecular entanglements. During the last decade, substantial progress in the nascent field of molecular nanotopology has been made, with general synthetic strategies and new knotting motifs introduced, along with insights into the properties and functions of ordered tangle sequences. Conformational restrictions imparted by knotting can induce allostery, strong and selective anion binding, catalytic activity, lead to effective chiral expression across length scales, binding modes in conformations efficacious for drug delivery, and facilitate mechanical function at the molecular level. As complex molecular topologies become increasingly synthetically accessible they have the potential to play a significant role in molecular and materials design strategies. We highlight particular examples of molecular knots to illustrate why these are a few of our favourite things.

Modulation of the structural information in shape-defined heterocyclic strands: the case of a (pyridine-hydrazone)2pyrazine ligand

Metal ions (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Eu³⁺, Sm³⁺) and protons can, through coordination and protonation, modulate in three specific ways the structural information contained in the pyrazine-based heterocyclic strand L (obtained from 2,5-bis(methylhydrazino)pyrazine and 2 equivalents of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde), thus generating two linear rod-like conformations and a bent one. This conformational diversity is associated with a structural one that consists of two diprotonated forms (H₂L(PF₆)₂ and H₂L(CF₃SO₃)₂), a polymeric architecture [AgL]_n(CF₃SO₃)_n, two rack-like complexes ([Eu₂H₂L₃(CF₃SO₃)₆](PF₆)₂ and [Sm₂H₂L₃(CF₃SO₃)₆](PF₆)₂) and a grid-like structure ([Cd₄L₄](CF₃SO₃)₈).

Recent developments in supramolecular complexes of azabenzenes containing one to four N atoms: synthetic strategies, structures, and magnetic properties

For the last couple of decades, azabenzene-based ligands have drawn much attention from inorganic chemists due to their ability to coordinate with different metal ions to form supramolecular clusters. These azabenzenes are weak σ donors and strong π acceptors and electron-deficient. Metallogrid complexes and non-grid oligomers are well-defined supramolecular clusters, formed by appropriate chelating ligands, and can show interesting optical, magnetic, and electronic properties. Self-assembly of [n × n] metallogrid complexes is dominated by the entropic factor while the formation of oligonuclear metal ion complexes is dominated by other effects like CFSE, electrostatic factors, ligand conformational characters, etc. Herein, the present article gives an overview of six-membered heterocyclic azine-based ligands and their potential for different metal ions to form polynuclear complexes. Moreover, their temperature-dependent magnetic properties and SCO phenomena are well described and tabulated.

Metal-to-metal communication during the spin state transition of a [2 × 2] Fe(II) metallogrid at equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium conditions

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes are prototypes of materials with bi- or multi-stability in the solid state. The structural evolution during their spin transition is a key feature to establish the foundations of how to utilize this type of material. So far, ultrafast time-resolved structural investigations of SCO solids have been focused on monometallic complexes, though an increasing number of oligometallic SCO complexes showing cooperativity effects are being reported. Here, we used single crystal X-ray crystallography and time-resolved pink Laue photocrystallography to study the molecular reorganisation during the thermal and photoinduced SCO of a [2 × 2] tetranuclear metallogrid of the form [FeII4LMe4](BF4)4·2MeCN ([LMe]- = 4-methyl-3,5-bis{6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)}pyrazolate). A multitemperature crystallographic investigation on single crystals reveals an effective communication between the metal centres during thermal SCO, observed by the simultaneous transformation of the coordination polyhedra of both crystallographic-symmetry independent metal atoms accompanying the SCO in only one of them. Time-resolved photocrystallography results reveal the different molecular responses between mononuclear and oligonuclear complexes, after light irradiation with a picosecond laser pulse. While mononuclear SCO complexes reorganise once during the first nanosecond after excitation, the tetranuclear metallogrid exhibits a multiple structural rearrangement in the same span of time. Such behaviour is attributed to the elastic communication between metal atoms, which allows the propagation of a short-range elastic distortion over the entire Fe4 grid complex. The present study sheds light on the importance of strong elastic coupling of metal atoms during the correlated spin transition of oligometallic complexes.

Self-assembled lanthanide-based helixes: synthetic control of the helical handedness by chirality of the ligand

The control of the self-assembly of lanthanide helical chain and their helical handedness have been investigated for the first time. Δ- and Λ-form lanthanide chain complexes were obtained by introducing thiazolidine ligands that were synthesised from L- and D-cysteine, respectively, and shared the same formula: [Ln₂(L)₃(H₂O)₅]_∞·3H₂O (Ln: Sm and Eu) (L: 2-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrophenyl)thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid). The crystallographic, circular dichroism, and luminescence properties of these novel lanthanide chain complexes were studied.

Inhibitory Potential of New Phenolic Hydrazide-Hydrazones with a Decoy Substrate Fragment towards Laccase from a Phytopathogenic Fungus: SAR and Molecular Docking Studies

Laccase from pathogenic fungi participates in both the delignification and neutralization of phytoantibiotics. Furthermore, it interferes with the hormone signaling in plants and catalyzes melanization. Infections of these pathogens contribute to loss in forestry, agriculture, and horticulture. As there is still a need to expand knowledge on efficient defense strategies against phytopathogenic fungi, the present study aimed to reveal more information on the molecular mechanisms of laccase inhibition with natural and natural-like carboxylic acid semi-synthetic derivatives. A set of hydrazide-hydrazones derived from carboxylic acids, generally including electron-rich arene units that serve as a decoy substrate, was synthesized and tested with laccase from Trametes versicolor. The classic synthesis of the title inhibitors proceeded with good to almost quantitative yield. Ninety percent of the tested molecules were active in the range of K_I = 8–233 µM and showed different types of action. Such magnitude of inhibition constants qualified the hydrazide-hydrazones as strong laccase inhibitors. Molecular docking studies supporting the experimental data explained the selected derivatives’ interactions with the enzyme. The results are promising in developing new potential antifungal agents mitigating the damage scale in the plant cultivation, gardening, and horticulture sectors.

Design of Promising Heptacoordinated Organotin (IV) Complexes-PEDOT: PSS-Based Composite for New-Generation Optoelectronic Devices Applications

The synthesis of four mononuclear heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes of mixed ligands derived from tridentated Schiff bases and pyrazinecarboxylic acid is reported. This organotin (IV) complexes were prepared by using a multicomponent reaction, the reaction proceeds in moderate to good yields (64% to 82%). The complexes were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, 1H, 13C, and 119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis. The spectroscopic analysis revealed that the tin atom is seven-coordinate in solution and that the carboxyl group acts as monodentate ligand. To determine the effect of the substituent on the optoelectronic properties of the organotin (IV) complexes, thin films were deposited, and the optical bandgap was obtained. A bandgap between 1.88 and 1.98 eV for the pellets and between 1.23 and 1.40 eV for the thin films was obtained. Later, different types of optoelectronic devices with architecture "contacts up/base down" were manufactured and analyzed to compare their electrical behavior. The design was intended to generate a composite based on the synthetized heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes embedded on the poly(3,4-ethylenedyoxithiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). A Schottky curve at low voltages (<1.5 mV) and a current density variation of as much as ~3 × 10-5 A/cm2 at ~1.1 mV was observed. A generated photocurrent was of approximately 10-7 A and a photoconductivity between 4 × 10-9 and 7 × 10-9 S/cm for all the manufactured structures. The structural modifications on organotin (IV) complexes were focused on the electronic nature of the substituents and their ability to contribute to the electronic delocalization via the π system. The presence of the methyl group, a modest electron donor, or the non-substitution on the aromatic ring, has a reduced effect on the electronic properties of the molecule. However, a strong effect in the electronic properties of the material can be inferred from the presence of electron-withdrawing substituents like chlorine, able to reduce the gap energies.

Synthesis, photochemical isomerization and photophysical properties of hydrazide–hydrazone derivatives

Enhanced E/Z-photoisomerization and luminescence of stilbene derivative co-coordinated in di-β-diketonate lanthanide complexes

A new tetradentate chelating ligand appending a stilbene derivative, E-N',N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-4-styrylbenzohydrazide (HL) was synthesized, together with two β-diketonates (4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenylbutane-1,3-dionate, tfd), with or without the trifluoroacetate anion present as a ligand for coordination with lanthanide(iii) ions to form [Ln(tfd)2(HL)(CF3CO2)] (LnC49H36F9N4O7, Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Eu (3), Gd (4)) and [Yb(tfd)2(L)] (YbC47H35F6N4O5 (5), L = deprotonated HL). All five complexes were structurally characterized, and five crystals were obtained and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The quantum yield of trans-to-cis photoisomerization of the stilbene group in gadolinium complex 4 was enhanced about five-fold compared with that of HL itself. Other complexes showed slightly enhanced or depressed photoisomerization. The total luminescence quantum yield/sensitization efficiency of europium complex 3 in the solid state and acetonitrile solution were 22.1%/96.7% and 19.3%/97.9%, respectively. The transfer of ligand energy to the Eu3+ ion was highly efficient. This enhanced photoisomerization and luminescence of the stilbene group within complexes was found to be related to the energy level of lanthanide ions and whether a ligand-to-metal center or ligand-to-ligand charge transfer process was present. The interpretation of experimental results is rationally supported by time-dependent density-functional theory calculations. In complex 4, except for the intramolecular absorption transition of HL ligand itself (IL, πHL-π*HL), the presence of the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition from tfd to HL (LLCT, πtfd-π*HL) and the triplet state energy of HL being unable to transfer to the higher 6P7/2 excited energy level of the Gd3+ ion would facilitate HL photoisomerization. For complex 3, this was due to reversed ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition from HL to tfd (LLCT, πHL-π*tfd) and its energy transfer to the metal center. Although the observed radiative lifetimes of NIR luminescent complexes 2 and 5 were around 10 μs, these systems contained only two diketone ligands, indicating that HL still had a certain promoting effect compared with tris(diketonate) lanthanide complexes. These results offer an important route for the design of new lanthanide-based molecular switching materials.

When Molecular Magnetism Meets Supramolecular Chemistry: Multifunctional and Multiresponsive Dicopper(II) Metallacyclophanes as Proof-of-Concept for Single-Molecule Spintronics and Quantum Computing Technologies?

Molecular magnetism has made a long journey, from the fundamental studies on through-ligand electron exchange magnetic interactions in dinuclear metal complexes with extended organic bridges to the more recent exploration of their electron spin transport and quantum coherence properties. Such a field has witnessed a renaissance of dinuclear metallacyclic systems as new experimental and theoretical models for single-molecule spintronics and quantum computing, due to the intercrossing between molecular magnetism and metallosupramolecular chemistry. The present review reports a state-of-the-art overview as well as future perspectives on the use of oxamato-based dicopper(II) metallacyclophanes as promising candidates to make multifunctional and multiresponsive, single-molecule magnetic (nano)devices for the physical implementation of quantum information processing (QIP). They incorporate molecular magnetic couplers, transformers, and wires, controlling and facilitating the spin communication, as well as molecular magnetic rectifiers, transistors, and switches, exhibiting a bistable (ON/OFF) spin behavior under external stimuli (chemical, electronic, or photonic). Special focus is placed on the extensive research work done by Professor Francesc Lloret, an outstanding chemist, excellent teacher, best friend, and colleague, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to molecular magnetism on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

Hetero-Tetranuclear Cu2+ /Ca2+ /Ca2+ /Cu2+ Architectures Based On Malten Ligand: Scaffold for Anion Binding

The hetero-tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex obtained with the N,N'-bis((3-hydroxy-4-pyron-2-yl)methyl)-N,N'-dimethylethylendiamine (Malten) ligand has been studied in solid and solution states as scaffold to bind anions. Three crystal structures showing the same metal ions sequence have been examined; they display a tetracharged complex cation neutralized by four monocharged anions. The anions play two different roles: as coordinated (two ClO₄ ^- , Cl^- or NO₃ ^- ) or ancillary (two ClO₄ ^- ) guests. The tetranuclear scaffold hosts two anions also in aqueous and ethanol solutions. Spectrophotometric studies in ethanol allowed to determine the addition constant values for Cl^- and Br^- (Log K_1-2 =4.43(4), 4.39(3) for Cl^- , 3.80(3), 3.54(2) for Br^- ) while the others, although bound, showed lower affinity for the scaffold. Both the crystals and the solutions change their color depending on the added anion, namely pink, dark green or blue in the presence of ClO₄ ^- , Cl^- or NO₃ ^- , respectively, thus the presence of the different anions is visible to the naked eye. The hetero-tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex is a versatile architecture to be used as scaffold for anion binding.

Coordinating and supramolecular prospects of unsymmetrically substituted carbohydrazides

Unsymmetrically substituted carbohydrazides serve as multifunctional ligands, practicing their chelating and supramolecular roles with cis-dioxomolybdenum(vi) cationic core and the Lindqvist anion.

Molecular squares, coordination polymers and mononuclear complexes supported by 2,4-dipyrazolyl-6H-1,3,5-triazine and 4,6-dipyrazolylpyrimidine ligands

The Fe[BF4]2 complex of 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-6H-1,3,5-triazine (L1) is a high-spin molecular square, [{Fe(L1)}4(μ-L1)4][BF4]8, whose crystals also contain the unusual HPzBF3 (HPz = pyrazole) adduct. Three other 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-6H-1,3,5-triazine derivatives with different pyrazole substituents (L2-L4) are unstable in the presence of first row transition ions, but form mononuclear, polymeric or molecular square complexes with silver(i). Most of these compounds involve bis-bidentate di(pyrazolyl)triazine coordination, which is unusual for that class of ligand, and the molecular squares encapsulate one or two BF4-, ClO4- or SbF6- ions through combinations of anionπ, AgX and/or C-HX (X = O or F) interactions. Treatment of Fe[NCS]2 or Fe[NCSe]2 with 4,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-2H-pyrimidine (L5) or its 2-methyl and 2-amino derivatives (L6 and L7) yields mononuclear [Fe(NCE)2L2] and/or the 1D coordination polymers catena-[Fe(NCE)2(μ-L)] (E = S or Se, L = L5-L7). Alcohol solvates of isomorphous [Fe(NCS)2L2] and [Fe(NCSe)2L2] compounds show different patterns of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, reflecting the acceptor properties of the anion ligands. These iron compounds are all high-spin, although annealing solvated crystals of [Fe(NCSe)2(L5)2] affords a new phase exhibiting an abrupt, low-temperature spin transition. Catena-[Fe(H2O)2(μ-L5)][ClO4]2 is a coordination polymer of alternating cis and trans iron centres.

Structural and magnetic characterization of Ni(ii), Co(ii), and Fe(ii) binuclear complexes on a bis(pyridyl-triazolyl)alkane basis

Reactions of bis[5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]alkanes (alkane spacers = -CH2- in L2, -C3H6- in L3, -C4H8- in L4) with M(ii)A2 salts (M = Ni, Co, Fe) resulted in the preparation of five series of mononuclear ([M(L2)(H2O)2]2+, 1a-c) or binuclear ([M2(L3)2(H2O)4]4+, 2a-c; ([M2(L4)2(H2O)4]4+, 3a-c, [M2(L3)2(μ-ox)]2+, 4a-c; [M2(L4)2(μ-ox)]2+, 5a-c) complexes. The crystal structures of ten complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Magnetic properties of the compounds were characterized by SQUID magnetometry and were analyzed by fitting on a spin Hamiltonian model. It was revealed that Fe(ii) and Co(ii) compounds exhibit non-negligible anisotropy and in the case of 2a-c and 3a-c complexes weak ferromagnetic interactions between the metal centers were observed. In the case of complexes containing an {M2(μ-ox)}2+ core strong antiferromagnetic interactions were observed within the dimer. Remarkably, solid state luminescence of Co(ii) and Fe(ii) complexes (1b, 2b, 3b and 1c, 2c, 3c) was observed.

Supramolecular Arene-Ruthenium Metallacycle with Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Properties

Functionalization of 1,4-di(4-pyridinyl)benzene with poly(arylester) dendrimers bearing cyanobiphenyl end-groups gives a bidentate dendromesogenic ligand (L) that exhibits thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. Combination of the diruthenium complex [Ru₂(p-cymene)₂(donq)][DDS]₂ (M) with L, by coordination-driven self-assembly, affords the discrete and well-defined metallacycle M₂L₂. Like L, this supramolecular dendritic system displays mesomorphic properties above 50 °C. Both compounds L and M₂L₂ show smectic phases, characterized by a multilayered organization of the multiple components.

Tetranuclear MnII, CoII, CuII and ZnII grid complexes of an unsymmetrical ditopic ligand: synthesis, structure, redox and magnetic properties

Synthesis towards the preparation of an unsymmetrical binucleating Schiff-base ligand, (H₂L) is discussed. It has been synthesized by reacting methyl 6-(hydrazinecarbonyl)picolinate with 2-hydroxy acetophenone. The ligand (H₂L) comprises two different asymmetric binding pockets; however, when reacted with Mn(ii), Co(ii), Cu(ii) and Zn(ii) salts, very stable self-assembled [2 × 2] grid complexes form regardless of the employed metal-to-ligand ratio. The obtained complexes [Mn₄L₄]·(CH₃CN) (1), [Co₄L₄]·(CHCl₃) (2), [Cu₄L₄]·(CHCl₃) (3) and [Zn₄L₄] (4) have been fully characterized by physicochemical methods, including ESI mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallographic analyses, and their EPR, magnetic and redox properties are discussed. All discussed complexes self-assembled in a 'head-to-tail' fashion leading to [2 × 2] grid architectures. Mn, Co and Cu grid complexes show weak to moderate antiferromagnetic coupling among the four metal centers. The high stability of the grid structures is in line with the lack of any observable dissociation or exchange between metal ions in solution. Complexes 1 and 2 show four quasi-reversible to irreversible oxidative responses in cyclic voltammograms at a glassy carbon working electrode in 1,2-dichlorobenzene and at a platinum working electrode in dichloromethane, respectively.

Construction and interconversion of anion-coordination-based ('aniono') grids and double helicates modulated by counter-cations

‘Aniono’ double helicates and grids were constructed using PO₄^3– anions and a bis–tris(urea) ligand and interconverted by changing the counter-cation.

Supramolecular assembly of well-defined discrete architectures has been of great interest due to the tunable properties of these structures in functional materials and bio-mimicking. While metal-coordination-driven assembly has been extensively studied, anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is just emerging for constructing complex supramolecular structures. Herein two A_2nL_2n (A = anion, L = ligand; n = 1 or 2) ‘aniono’-supramolecular assemblies, i.e. double helicates and the first anion grid, have been constructed based on the coordination between phosphate (PO₄^3–) anion and a bis–tris(urea) ligand. Moreover, the aniono-grid and double helicate motifs can be readily interconverted under ambient conditions by simply changing the counter-cation. These results redefine the power and scope of ACDA, which may represent a new approach in the assembly of well-defined architectures in parallel with the metal coordination-driven assembly of metallo-supramolecules.

Probing the Dynamics of the Imine-Based Pentafoil Knot and Pentameric Circular Helicate Assembly

We investigate the self-assembly dynamics of an imine-based pentafoil knot and related pentameric circular helicates, each derived from a common bis(formylpyridine)bipyridyl building block, iron(II) chloride, and either monoamines or a diamine. The mixing of circular helicates derived from different amines led to the complete exchange of the N-alkyl residues on the periphery of the metallo-supramolecular scaffolds over 4 days in DMSO at 60 °C. Under similar conditions, deuterium-labeled and nonlabeled building blocks showed full dialdehyde building block exchange over 13 days for open circular helicates but was much slower for the analogous closed-loop pentafoil knot (>60 days). Although both knots and open circular helicates self-assemble under thermodynamic control given sufficiently long reaction times, this is significantly longer than the time taken to afford the maximum product yield (2 days). Highly effective error correction occurs during the synthesis of imine-based pentafoil molecular knots and pentameric circular helicates despite, in practice, the systems not operating under full thermodynamic control.

Heterometallic grids: synthetic strategies and recent advances

Supramolecular metallogrid complexes are metalloclusters involving metal ions in planar array arrangements and organic ligands in perpendicular arrangements at each corner of the metal sites. Such essentially metal ion arrays have attracted great attention in the last three decades owing to their variety of interesting optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Among them, metallogrids containing more than one type of metal, that is heterometallic grids, are rare but have more potential to engineer a higher level functionality into one molecule. However, until now, only dozens of heterometallic grids have been reported without any specific review. Herein, we aim to give an overview of the assembly strategies, the physicochemical properties, and finally some perspectives on the future development of heterometallic grids.

Dinuclear helicate and tetranuclear cage assembly using appropriately designed ditopic triazole-azine ligands

Architecture, helicate or cage, is controlled by choice of meta vs. para phenylene linker in new, robust, ditopic triazole-pyrimidine ligands.

Synthesis, Photophysics, and Switchable Luminescence Properties of a New Class of Ruthenium(II)-Terpyridine Complexes Containing Photoisomerizable Styrylbenzene Units

We report here the synthesis and structural characterization of a new class of homoleptic terpyridine complexes of Ru(II) containing styrylbenzene moieties to improve room-temperature luminescence properties. Solid-state structure determination of 2 was done through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Tuning of photophysical properties was done by incorporating both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents in the ligand. The complexes exhibit strong emission having lifetimes in the range of 10.0-158.5 ns, dependent on the substituent and the solvent. Good correlations were also observed between Hammett σ_p parameters with the lifetimes of the complexes. Styrylbenzene moieties in the complexes induce trans-trans to trans-cis isomerization accompanied by huge alteration of their spectral profiles upon treating with UV light. Reversal of trans-cis to trans-trans forms was also achieved on interacting with visible light. Change from trans-trans to the corresponding trans-cis form leads to emission quenching, whereas trans-cis to the corresponding trans-trans form leads to restoration of emission. In essence, "on-off" and "off-on" photoswitching of luminescence was observed. Calculations involving density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT methods were performed to understand the electronic structures as well as for appropriate assignment of the absorption and emission bands.

A Rotaxane-like Cage-in-Ring Structural Motif for a Metallosupramolecular Pd6 L12 Aggregate

A BODIPY-based bis(3-pyridyl) ligand undergoes self-assembly upon coordination to tetravalent palladium(II) cations to form a Pd₆ L₁₂ metallosupramolecular assembly with an unprecedented structural motif that resembles a rotaxane-like cage-in-ring arrangement. In this assembly the ligand adopts two different conformations-a C-shaped one to form a Pd₂ L₄ cage which is located in the center of a Pd₄ L₈ ring consisting of ligands in a W-shaped conformation. This assembly is not mechanically interlocked in the sense of catenation but it is stabilized only by attractive π-stacking between the peripheral BODIPY chromophores and the ligands' skeleton as well as attractive van der Waals interactions between the long alkoxy chains. As a result, the co-arrangement of the two components leads to a very efficient space filling. The overall structure can be described as a rotaxane-like assembly with a metallosupramolecular cage forming the axle in a metallosupramolecular ring. This unique structural motif could be characterized via ESI mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

Creating capsules with cubanes

A sextuply linked capsule incorporating two Ni(ii) cubane units is formed when Ni(ii) salts are reacted with N-aminoalkyl salicylamidato ligands in a 4 : 3 ratio in methanol. With a short (propyl) alkyl substituent, additional chloride counter ions are included in the cavity by occupation of one apex of each of the linked cubanes, while with a longer (pentyl) substituent, perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate anions are included, probably by H-bonding involving hydroxyl groups on the inner apices of the cubanes, indicating that the cavity can be regarded as suited to binding of hydrophilic units despite the lipophilic character of its links. The dicubane capsules show ferromagnetic behaviour typical of Ni(ii) cubanes in general, with coupling constants dependent upon the nature of the salt-derived counter anions.

Pre-programmed self-assembly of polynuclear clusters

This perspective reviews our recent efforts towards the self-assembly of polynuclear clusters with ditopic and tritopic multidentate ligands HL1 (2-phenyl-4,5-bis{6-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-2-yl}-1H-imidazole) and H2L2 (2,6-bis-[5-(2-pyridinyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-yl]pyridine), both of which are planar and rigid molecules. HL1 was found to be an excellent support for tetranuclear [Fe4] complexes, [FeII4(L1)4](BF4)4 ([FeII4]) and [FeIII2FeII2(L1)4](BF4)6 ([FeIII2FeII2]). The homovalent system was found to exhibit multistep spin crossover (SCO), while the mixed-valence [FeIII2FeII2] complex shows wavelength-dependent tuneable light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST). For H2L2, a variety of polynuclear complexes were obtained through complexation with different transition metal ions, allowing the isolation of rings, grids, and helix structures. The rigidity of the ligand, difference in its coordination sites, and affinity for different metal ions dictates its coordination behaviour. In this paper, we summarise these ligand pre-programmed self-assembled clusters and their diverse physical properties.
