Abstract
Dearomatization of indoles through a charge transfer complex constitutes a powerful tool for synthesizing three-dimensional constrained structures. However, the implementation of this strategy for the dearomatization of tryptamine-derived isocyanides to generate spirocyclic scaffolds remains underdeveloped. In this work, we have demonstrated the ability of tryptamine-derived isocyanides to form aggregates at higher concentration, enabling a single electron transfer step to generate carbon-based-radical intermediates. Optical, HRMS and computational studies have elucidated key aspects associated with the photophysical properties of tryptamine-derived isocyanides. The developed protocol is operationally simple, robust and demonstrates a novel approach to generate conformationally constrained spirocyclic scaffolds, compounds with high demand in various fields, including drug discovery.

Abstract
We present a novel system, a liquid-state pillar[5]arene decorated with tri(ethylene oxide) chains, that brings electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules into proximity for efficient exciplex formation. The electron-accepting guests exhibit a blue-purple emission from a localized excited state upon excitation in common solvents. However, directly dissolving the guests in the electron-donating pillar[5]arene liquid (a bulk system) results in visible green emission from the formed exciplexes. In the bulk system, the guest molecules are always surrounded by excess pillar[5]arene molecules, resulting in the formation of mainly inclusion-type exciplexes. In the bulk system, energy migration occurs between the pillar[5]arene molecules. Excitation of the pillar[5]arenes results in a more intense green exciplex emission than that observed upon direct excitation of the guests. In summary, the pillar[5]arene liquid is a novel system for achieving efficient exciplex formation and energy migration that is different from typical solvent and solid systems.

Abstract
Water can accelerate a variety of organic reactions far beyond the rates observed in classical organic solvents. However, using pure water as a solvent introduces solubility constraints that have limited the applicability of efficient photochemistry in particular. We report here the formation of aggregates between pairs of arenes, heteroarenes, enamines, or esters with different electron affinities in an aqueous medium, leading to an oil-water phase boundary through substrate melting point depression. The active hydrogen atoms in the reactants engage in hydrogen bonds with water, thereby accelerating photochemical reactions. This methodology realizes appealingly simple conditions for aqueous coupling reactions of complex solid molecules, including complex drug molecules that are poorly soluble in water.

Abstract
Charge-transfer complexes can exhibit various physical properties that depend on the relative positions of electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules. Several studies have investigated the relationship between the relative positions of electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules and their luminescence properties. However, elucidating the correlation between the relative positions and detailed luminescence processes without changing the molecular structures has not been explored. Herein, we report control of the relative position based on charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between sulfo and amino groups and on alkylamines' steric factors, and report concomitant modulation of the luminescent properties. Six charge-transfer complexes were prepared from anthracene-2,6-disulfonic acid and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene as electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules, and various alkylamines. Different alkylamines' steric factors drastically and precisely changed the relative positions of the electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules without changing their molecular structures. Consequently, the six crystals exhibited maximum emission wavelengths from 543 to 624 nm and different luminescence processes.

Abstract
Information gained from in-depth mechanistic investigations can be used to control the selectivity of reactions, leading to the expansion of the generality of synthetic processes and the discovery of new reactivity. Here, we investigate the mechanism of light-driven [2+2] heterocycloadditions (Paternò-Büchi reactions) between indoles and ketones to develop insight into these processes. Using ground-state UV-Vis absorption and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), together with DFT calculations, we found that the reactions can proceed via an exciplex or electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, which are key intermediates in determining the stereoselectivity of the reactions. We used this discovery to control the diastereoselectivity of the reactions, gaining access to previously inaccessible diastereoisomeric variants. When moving from 370 to 456 nm irradiation, the EDA complex is increasingly favoured, and the diastereomeric ratio (d.r.) of the product moves from >99:<1 to 47:53. In contrast, switching from methyl to ipropyl substitution favours the exciplex intermediate, reversing the d.r. from 89:11 to 16:84. Our study shows how light and steric parameters can be rationally used to control the diastereoselectivity of photoreactions, creating mechanistic pathways to previously inaccessible stereochemical variants.

Abstract
The synthesis of four membered heterocycles usually requires multi-step procedures and prefunctionalized reactants. A straightforward alternative is the photochemical [2+2]-heterocycloaddition between an alkene and a carbonyl derivative, conventionally based on the photoexcitation of this latter. However, this approach is limited by the absorption profile of the carbonyl, requiring in most of the cases the use of high-energy UV-light, that often results in undesired side reactions and/or the degradation of the reaction components. The development of new and milder visible light-driven [2+2]-heterocycloadditions is, therefore, highly desirable. In this Review, we highlight the most relevant achievements in the development of [2+2]-heterocycloadditions promoted by visible light, with a particular emphasis on the involved reaction mechanisms. The open challenges will also be discussed, suggesting new possible evolutions, and stimulating new methodological developments in the field.

Abstract
The amino alcohol meglumine solubilizes organic compounds in water and enforces the formation of electron donor acceptor (EDA) complexes of haloarenes with indoles, anilines, anisoles or thiols, which are not observed in organic solvents. UV-A photoinduced electron transfer within the EDA complexes induces the mesolytic cleavage of the halide ion and radical recombination of the arenes leading, after rearomatization and proton loss to C-C or C-S coupling products. Depending on the substitution pattern selective and unique cross-couplings are observed. UV and NMR measurements reveal the importance of the assembly for the photoinduced reaction. Enforced EDA aggregate formation in water allows new activation modes for organic photochemical synthesis.

Abstract
An unprecedented photoswitching phenomenon of flavin-inhibitor complexes in a flavoenzyme was revealed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The vast majority of flavoenzymes, including monomeric sarcosine oxidase (MSOX), perform non-light-driven physiological functions. Yet, the participation of flavin cofactors in photoinduced electron transfer reactions is widespread. MSOX catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of sarcosine; methylthioacetate (MTA) is a substrate analog inhibitor that forms a complex with MSOX exhibiting intense absorption bands over the whole visible range due to flavin-MTA charge transfer (CT) interactions. Here, we demonstrate that upon excitation, these CT interactions vanish during a barrierless high quantum yield reaction in ∼300 fs. The initial complex subsequently geminately re-forms in a few nanoseconds near room temperature in a thermally activated way with an activation energy of 28 kJ/mol. We attribute this hitherto undocumented process to a well-defined photoinduced isomerization of MTA in the active site, as corroborated by experiments with the heavier ligand methylselenoacetate. Photoisomerization phenomena involving CT transitions may be further explored in photocatalytic and photoswitching applications of flavoenzymes.

Abstract
A range of asymmetric photochemical transformations using visible light have recently become considerably attractive. Among the various approaches, chiral Lewis acid association to enones for [2 + 2] and ortho photocycloadditions and oxadi-π-methane rearrangements have shown to be very promising. Naturally, chiral Lewis acid coordination protects one of the prochiral faces of the C═C double bond, which enables an effective enantiodifferentiation in the following bond-forming process(es). Here, we studied regio- and enantiodifferentiating [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions of naphthoquinone derivatives mediated by chiral oxazaborolidines. A stereochemical control was quite challenging for the 2-ene-1,4-dione substrate, as a double coordination of Lewis acid essentially cancels out the face selectivity, and a mono-coordination to each carbonyl group leads to an opposite stereochemical outcome. Furthermore, a stepwise coordination in the ground state of Lewis acid in a 1:1 fashion was practically inaccessible. We found that the excited-state decomplexation is a key to accomplish high regio- and enantioselectivities in the photocycloaddition of an ene-dione.

Abstract
Singlet chiral photocatalysis is highly challenging. Herein, we report fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based chiral photocatalysis with γ-cyclodextrin (CD)-grafted lanthanide-doped upconverted nanoparticles (UCNP). The CD-modified UCNP strongly emits in the UV wavelength region upon excitation with a 980 nm laser, which selectively sensitizes the photosubstrates complexed by CD on the surface of UCNP through FRET. Therefore, enantiodifferentiating photocyclodimerization of anthracene or naphthalene derivatives sensitized by the CD-modified UCNP gives photoproducts in good enantioselectivity even in the presence of a catalytic amount of CD-modified UCNP. Moreover, the photocatalysts are readily separated and could be reused for at least six cycles without decreasing the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Chiral cis-cyclopropanes are strained rigid analogues of alkyl chains, whose study and application are limited by their difficult synthesis. A modular approach from olefin materials is enabled by the discovery of the electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between 2-substituted benzothiazolines and N-hydroxyphthalimide esters. These complexes are activated by visible light without photocatalysts, and the benzothiazoline reagent plays a triple role as a photoreductant, a stereoselective hydrogen-atom donor, and a Brønsted acid. Beyond the enantioselective synthesis of cis-cyclopropanes, these results introduce benzothiazolines as accessible and easily tunable self-sensitized photoreductants.

Abstract
Two ion populations of protonated Rivaroxaban, [C19H18ClN3O5S + H]+, are separated under pure N2 conditions using differential mobility spectrometry prior to characterization in a hybrid triple quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometer. These populations are attributed to bare protonated Rivaroxaban and to a proton-bound Rivaroxaban-ammonia complex, which dissociates prior to mass-selecting the parent ion. Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) and collision-induced dissociation (CID) studies indicate that both protonated Rivaroxaban ion populations are comprised of the computed global minimum prototropic isomer. Two ion populations are also observed when the collision environment is modified with 1.5% (v/v) acetonitrile. In this case, the protonated Rivaroxaban ion populations are produced by the dissociation of the ammonium complex and by the dissociation of a proton-bound Rivaroxaban-acetonitrile complex prior to mass selection. Again, both populations exhibit a similar CID behavior; however, UVPD spectra indicate that the two ion populations are associated with different prototropic isomers. The experimentally acquired spectra are compared with computed spectra and are assigned to two prototropic isomers that exhibit proton sharing between distal oxygen centers.

Abstract
Photoexciting charge transfer (CT) transitions arising from host-guest interactions in a confined environment can efficiently yield kinetically trapped radicals. In order to predispose these photogenerated radicals for diffusion limited reactions it becomes imperative to understand the nature of the host-guest CT interactions in the ground and excited states. Here we probe the heterogeneity of guest orientations and the ensuing excited state charge transfer dynamics of an electron-rich molecular probe N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) incarcerated inside an electron deficient water-soluble cationic Pd6L412+ nanohost. Using a combination of 1H-NMR, resonance Raman spectrosocopy, and pump-probe spectroscopy we highlight the necessary challenges that need to be addressed in order to use molecular cages as photocatalytic reaction vessels.

Abstract
The asymmetric synthesis of chiral polycyclic ethers by an intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition is described. This process proceeded through a photocatalytically active iminium ion-based charge transfer (CT) complex under visible light irradiation. In this way a stereocontrolled [2+2] photocycloaddition is enabled leading to tricyclic products with good enantiomeric ratios.

Abstract
D-π-A-based dyes find a wide range of applications in molecular electronics and photovoltaics in general and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) in particular. We speculated whether there exists a relationship between the degree of aromaticity of the π-spacers used in the D-π-A type dyes and their structural, electronic, energetic, photophysical, and intramolecular charge transfer properties. Triphenylamine (TPA) and cyanoacrylic acid (CAA) have been chosen as the donor and acceptor, respectively. In order to carry out the investigation systematically the π-spacers have been logically chosen based on their experimental resonance energies, which follows the order, furan < pyrrole < thiophene < pyridine < benzene. All the properties have been discussed based on the degree of aromaticity of the π-spacers. Geometric properties such as dihedral angles and bond lengths have been discussed extensively. Energy levels of the frontier molecular orbitals, electrochemical properties, namely, ground and excited state oxidation potentials (GSOP/ESOP), and change in Gibbs free energy for electron injection and regeneration (ΔGinj/ΔGreg) have also been evaluated. Photophysical properties like wavelength of maximum absorption (λmax), oscillator strength (f), light harvesting efficiency (LHE), and intramolecular charge transfer properties, viz., charge transfer distance (DCT), fraction of charge transferred (qCT), and change in dipole moment (μCT) have been assessed. The adsorption characteristics of dye with (TiO2)9 nanocluster have been studied along with their optical properties. Results reveal that the nature of the relationship between the aforementioned properties and the extent of aromaticity of the π-spacers is inherently multifaceted. It thus turns out that it is highly difficult to quantify the relationship. These properties of D-π1-π2-A molecules can be regarded to be arising from two groups, namely, π-spacers with lower and higher resonance energies. This results in a natural trade-off in selection of competing properties. The qualitative aromaticity photovoltaic property relationship thus obtained may serve as a guide to tailor-design various properties of D-π-A type dyes for application in the intramolecular charge transfer devices.

Abstract
To achieve the dynamical dual-pattern with multiplex information of complex topography and 3D fluorescence is challenging yet promising for wide applications ranging from visual bioassays, memory, smart devices to smart display. Here, we develop a convenient, reliable, and versatile method to realize the well-ordered dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence via a light direct-writing approach based on the wrinkle mechanism. By introducing the charge transfer (CT) interaction between π-electron-rich anthracene (AN) and π-electron-poor naphthalene diimide (NDI) into the polymer system, both modulus and fluorescence of the polymer films can be spatially regulated through the photodimerization of AN, which is controlled in-plane by photomasks, and becomes gradient in the vertical direction due to the filter effect of light. Therefore, the exposed sample displays a well-ordered complex pattern with the same topography as the applied photomask and 3D gradient change of fluorescence from red to green laterally across the layers simultaneously. The spatial cross-linking and CT interaction of the gradient layer can be controlled independently, which not only provides the reliability and reversibility of the topographical and fluorescence dual-pattern but also endows the possibility for tailoring the pattern with memory and self-healing. These characters of the dual-pattern with reversible topography and 3D fluorescence declare the clear applications in smart multiplex displays, memory, anticounterfeiting, visual detections, and so on.

Abstract
The reversible surface patterns with fluorescence and topography can possibly enable information recording and reading and provide an important alternative to realize the higher information security. We demonstrated a reversible dual-pattern with simultaneously responsive fluorescence and topography using an anthracene (AN) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) containing copolymer (PAN-NDI-BA) as the skin layer, in which the reversible photodimerization of AN can simultaneously control the cross-linking and CT interaction between AN and NDI. Upon irradiation with UV light and thermal treatment, the resulting pattern assumes a reversible change between smooth and wrinkled states, and its fluorescence changes reversibly from red to white to blue-green. The smart surfaces with dynamic hierarchical wrinkles and fluorescence were achieved by selective irradiation with photomasks and can be employed for potential applications in smart displays and anticounterfeiting.

The wavelength of the incident light determines the primary charge separation pathway in Photosystem II. Sci Rep 2018; 8:2837. Abstract
Charge separation is a key component of the reactions cascade of photosynthesis, by which solar energy is converted to chemical energy. From this photochemical reaction, two radicals of opposite charge are formed, a highly reducing anion and a highly oxidising cation. We have previously proposed that the cation after far-red light excitation is located on a component different from PD1, which is the location of the primary electron hole after visible light excitation. Here, we attempt to provide further insight into the location of the primary charge separation upon far-red light excitation of PS II, using the EPR signal of the spin polarized 3P680 as a probe. We demonstrate that, under far-red light illumination, the spin polarized 3P680 is not formed, despite the primary charge separation still occurring at these conditions. We propose that this is because under far-red light excitation, the primary electron hole is localized on ChlD1, rather than on PD1. The fact that identical samples have demonstrated charge separation upon both far-red and visible light excitation supports our hypothesis that two pathways for primary charge separation exist in parallel in PS II reaction centres. These pathways are excited and activated dependent of the wavelength applied.

Abstract
Hyperconjugative interaction was demonstrated to play a vital role in the photochemistry of 4-aryl-1,1-dicyano-1-butenes. Thus a simple substituent on the benzylic position effectively induced a new photoreactivity to afford an allylic rearrangement product that is not obtained for the parent substrate. The natural bond orbital analysis was employed to reveal the enhanced relative contributions of hyperconjugation in the excited state, which dramatically alter the photochemical outcomes not only by reducing the strength of the allylic/benzylic bond but more crucially by affecting the conformer distribution.

Contrasting Behaviour of Exciplex Ensembles in the Diastereodifferentiating Paternò–Büchi Reaction of Chiral Cyanobenzoate with Naphthyl- and Phenylethenes on Direct or Charge-Transfer Excitation. Abstract
The diastereodifferentiating Paternò–Büchi reaction of chiral cyanobenzoate with 1-(1-naphthyl)-1-phenylethene was compared with those with 1,1-diphenylethene on direct and charge-transfer excitations. By desymmetrization of the donor, four diastereomeric oxetane products were formed on photolysis in excellent combined yields. Increase in donor strength induced a stronger charge-transfer interaction both in ground and excited states. Thus, the difference in diastereoselectivities with two different excitation modes (i.e. direct versus charge-transfer) became less significant with a naphthyl derivative as donor. A subtle change of donor–acceptor interaction was shown to have profound effect on the nature of the excited-state complexes and thus the product (stereo)selectivities. Despite a small temperature dependence, an Eyring-type study on the diastereoselectivities confirmed that the excited charge-transfer complex is an excited species distinct from the conventional exciplex.

Abstract
A metal-free, photochemical strategy for the direct alkylation of indoles was developed. The reaction, which occurs at ambient temperature, is driven by the photochemical activity of electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes, generated upon association of substituted 1H-indoles with electron-accepting benzyl and phenacyl bromides. Significant mechanistic insights are provided by the X-ray single-crystal analysis of an EDA complex relevant to the photoalkylation and the determination of the quantum yield (Φ) of the process.

Abstract
Solvent, temperature, and excitation wavelength significantly affected the photochemical outcomes of a naphthalene-dicyanoethene system tethered by different number (n) of methylene groups (1-3). The effect of irradiation wavelength was almost negligible for 2a but pronounced for 3a. The temperature dependence and theoretical calculations indicated the diversity of exciplex conformations, an ensemble of which can be effectively altered by changing excitation wavelength to eventually switch the regioselectivity of photoreactions.
