Characterization and biological prospects of various calcined temperature-V2O5 nanoparticles synthesized by Citrus hystrix fruit extract

In this study, a simple green synthesis of vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles (VNPs) was prepared by the extract of Kaffir lime fruit (Citrus hystrix) as a green reducing and stabilizing agent, along with the investigation of calcination temperature was carried out at 450 and 550 °C. It was affirmed that, at higher temperature (550 °C), the VNPs possessed a high degree crystalline following the construction of (001) lattice diffraction within an increase in crystalline size from 47.12 to 53.51 nm, although the band gap of the materials at 450 °C was lower than that of the VNPs-550 (2.53 versus 2.66 eV, respectively). Besides, the materials were assessed for the potential bioactivities toward antibacterial, antifungal, DNA cleavage, anti-inflammatory, and hemolytic performances. As a result, the antibacterial activity, with minimal inhalation concentration (MIC) < 6.25 μg/mL for both strains, and fungicidal one of the materials depicted the dose-dependent effects. Once, both VNPs exhibited the noticeable efficacy of the DNA microbial damage, meanwhile, the outstanding anti-inflammatory agent was involved with the IC50 of 123.636 and 227.706 μg/mL, accounting for VNPs-450 and VNPs-550, respectively. Furthermore, this study also demonstrated the hemolytic potential of the VNPs materials. These consequences declare the prospects of the VNPs as the smart and alternative material from the green procedure in biomedicine.

Evaluate the Work-Related Exposure of Vanadium on Scalp Hair Samples of Outdoor and Administrative Workers of Oil Drilling Field: Related Health Risks

Petrochemical facilities, including oil well drilling, are discharging resources of extensive noxious waste into the environment. The workers in different sections might be exposed to vanadium (V) through different routes (groundwater and soil), which is linked with extensive physiological disorders, hypertension, respiratory disorders, anemia, skin, and gastrointestinal disorders. This study determined the contents of V in a biological sample (scalp hair) of workers of different categories (outdoor and office workers) in an oil drilling field in Sindh, Pakistan. The environmental samples, groundwater, bottled mineral water, and soil samples were also analyzed for V. For comparative purposes, the scalp hair of age-matched male subjects residing in domestic areas of Hyderabad city, Pakistan, was also analyzed. Generally, the concentrations of V in groundwater near the oil drilling field and drilled soil illustrated significant variations. The results show that the vanadium concentration in the scalp hair of non-exposed referents (controls) and office workers (exposed referents) was 62% and 45% lower than those observed for outdoor drilling and cleaning mud workers. It was observed that high exposure to V in outdoor workers might be linked with different physiological disorders such as anemia, eye problems, and bronchial disorders.

Elucidating Multiple Electron-Transfer Pathways for Metavanadate Bioreduction by Actinomycetic Streptomyces microflavus

While microbial reduction has gained widespread recognition for efficiently remediating environments polluted by toxic metavanadate [V(V)], the pool of identified V(V)-reducing strains remains rather limited, with the vast majority belonging to bacteria and fungi. This study is among the first to confirm the V(V) reduction capability of Streptomyces microflavus, a representative member of ubiquitous actinomycetes in environment. A V(V) removal efficiency of 91.0 ± 4.35% was achieved during 12 days of operation, with a maximum specific growth rate of 0.073 d-1. V(V) was bioreduced to insoluble V(IV) precipitates. V(V) reduction took place both intracellularly and extracellularly. Electron transfer was enhanced during V(V) bioreduction with increased electron transporters. The electron-transfer pathways were revealed through transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses. Electrons might flow either through the respiratory chain to reduce intracellular V(V) or to cytochrome c on the outer membrane for extracellular V(V) reduction. Soluble riboflavin and quinone also possibly mediated extracellular V(V) reduction. Glutathione might deliver electrons for intracellular V(V) reduction. Bioaugmentation of the aquifer sediment with S. microflavus accelerated V(V) reduction. The strain could successfully colonize the sediment and foster positive correlations with indigenous microorganisms. This study offers new microbial resources for V(V) bioremediation and improve the understanding of the involved molecular mechanisms.

Vanadium Compounds with Antidiabetic Potential

Over the last four decades, vanadium compounds have been extensively studied as potential antidiabetic drugs. With the present review, we aim at presenting a general overview of the most promising compounds and the main results obtained with in vivo studies, reported from 1899-2023. The chemistry of vanadium is explored, discussing the importance of the structure and biochemistry of vanadate and the impact of its similarity with phosphate on the antidiabetic effect. The spectroscopic characterization of vanadium compounds is discussed, particularly magnetic resonance methodologies, emphasizing its relevance for understanding species activity, speciation, and interaction with biological membranes. Finally, the most relevant studies regarding the use of vanadium compounds to treat diabetes are summarized, considering both animal models and human clinical trials. An overview of the main hypotheses explaining the biological activity of these compounds is presented, particularly the most accepted pathway involving vanadium interaction with phosphatase and kinase enzymes involved in the insulin signaling cascade. From our point of view, the major discoveries regarding the pharmacological action of this family of compounds are not yet fully understood. Thus, we still believe that vanadium presents the potential to help in metabolic control and the clinical management of diabetes, either as an insulin-like drug or as an insulin adjuvant. We look forward to the next forty years of research in this field, aiming to discover a vanadium compound with the desired therapeutic properties.

Vanadium Oxide: Phase Diagrams, Structures, Synthesis, and Applications

Vanadium oxides with multioxidation states and various crystalline structures offer unique electrical, optical, optoelectronic and magnetic properties, which could be manipulated for various applications. For the past 30 years, significant efforts have been made to study the fundamental science and explore the potential for vanadium oxide materials in ion batteries, water splitting, smart windows, supercapacitors, sensors, and so on. This review focuses on the most recent progress in synthesis methods and applications of some thermodynamically stable and metastable vanadium oxides, including but not limited to V₂O₃, V₃O₅, VO₂, V₃O₇, V₂O₅, V₂O₂, V₆O₁₃, and V₄O₉. We begin with a tutorial on the phase diagram of the V-O system. The second part is a detailed review covering the crystal structure, the synthesis protocols, and the applications of each vanadium oxide, especially in batteries, catalysts, smart windows, and supercapacitors. We conclude with a brief perspective on how material and device improvements can address current deficiencies. This comprehensive review could accelerate the development of novel vanadium oxide structures in related applications.

Biologically active oxovanadium(IV) Schiff base metal complex: antibacterial, antioxidant, biomolecular interaction and molecular docking studies

The oxovanadium(IV) Schiff base metal complex (ISNPV) have been synthesized as well as characterized by using micro analytical and traditional spectroscopic techniques. The spectral findings were utilized to validate the formation of ISNPV with structure exhibited square pyramidal geometry. The in vitro antibacterial activities of ISNPV were investigated to five different bacterial stains such as S. aureus, S. epidermidis, B. cereus, B. amyloliquefaciens and B. subtilis. The obtained result have suggested that the ISNPV has highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus than the other bacterial stains. The in vitro antioxidant activity like DPPH free radical scavenging assay method was studied by ISNPV in DMSO medium. Because it scavenges all free radicals, the ISNPV possesses higher antioxidant activity than the free ligand. UV-visible absorption and emission spectral techniques were used to investigate the binding of CT-DNA to the ISNPV. Both the spectral data indicate that the ISNPV binds the double helix structure of CT-DNA via an intercalation mode. Additionally, investigate the interactions of ISNPV with the protein molecules like BSA/HAS has been investigated using absorption and emission techniques. The absorption intensity of metal complex increases as well as the emission intensity of protein molecules ability decreases due to the binding nature of ISNPV with BSA/HSA protein molecules. The binding nature of ISNPV with bio molecules such as CT-DNA, BSA and HSA was also validated using molecular docking approach.

Freshwater Macroalgae, Oedogonium, Grown in Wastewater Reduce Diet-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Rats

Macroalgae produce compounds with industrial, pharmaceutical and nutritional applications. In this study, biomass from the freshwater macroalgal genus Oedogonium was grown in either treated municipal wastewater (M) or ash dam water from a coal-fired power station (D). The biomass was investigated for its metabolic responses in high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats, a model of human metabolic syndrome. The Oedogonium biomass cultured in M contained higher amounts of K, Mg, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), insoluble fibre and β-carotene, while biomass grown in D contained higher amounts of Al, Fe, V, Zn, Mn and As. Biomass from M further increased body weight and inflammation in the heart and colon in high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats. In contrast, biomass from D prevented changes in metabolic, cardiovascular and liver parameters without changing tissue histology. We suggest that increased intake of metals and metalloids through macroalgal biomass from D may decrease abdominal fat deposition while polysaccharides, PUFA and carotenoids from M may improve blood glucose responses in an obesogenic diet. Thus, macroalgal biomass grown in different wastewater sources could be acceptable for feed or food applications. This biomass could even provide potential health benefits in diet-induced metabolic syndrome.

Toxicity of Nanocomplexes Containing Gadolinium Orthovanadate Nanoparticles and Cholesterol

Previous studies have shown the ability of nanocomplexes (NCs), which consist of nanoparticles (NPs) of orthovanadates of rare earth metals (GdYVO₄:Eu³⁺) and cholesterol, to inhibit the growth of Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC). However, the biosafety of these NCs remains unclear. Our objective was to investigate the acute and subchronic toxicity of NCs. NCs were administered to BALB/c mice in NPs concentration of 5.9; 29.5; 59.1; and 118.2 mg/kg. Acute toxicity was induced by a single administration of NCs, subchronic-by repeated daily administration of NCs for 14 days. On day 15 and on day 31 for acute and subchronic toxicity, respectively, the percentage of animal survival, body weight, condition of visceral organs, and activities of γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) were determined. It was found that administration of NCs in the concentration of 5.9 mg/kg and 29.5 mg/kg of NPs did not influence on survival of animals or have a negative impact on their performance status, morphological and quantitative characteristics of visceral organs, and activities of the GGT and G-6-PDH in the liver. For acute toxicity, the semi-lethal dose (LD₅₀) of nanocomplexes was determined (118.2 mg/kg of NPs). As to subchronic toxicity, it was found that repeated (for 14 days) administration of NCs containing 59.1 mg/kg of NPs decrease survival of animals to 50%. The coefficient of accumulation (C_acum = 7) indicates the low accumulative ability of NCs upon long-term use. Thus, from the LD₅₀ and accumulation coefficient, NCs can be referred to as low-toxic substances and used in conditionally therapeutic doses in oncological practice to develop nanostructured formulations of drugs.

(NH4)2[Co(H2O)6]2V10O28·4H2O Vs. (NH4)2[Ni(H2O)6]2V10O28·4H2O: Structural, Spectral and Thermal Analyses and Evaluation of Their Antibacterial Activities

This paper presents the synthesis of two cluster compounds {(NH4)2[Co(H2O)6]2V10O28·4H2O (C1) and (NH4)2[Ni(H2O)6]2V10O28·4H2O (C2)} which were obtained as single crystals suitable for XRD analysis that revealed their crystallization in the monoclinic (C2/c) and triclinic (P-1) space groups, respectively. Additionally, C1 and C2 were characterized using CHN analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy and their thermal decomposition mechanisms were investigated. The antibacterial activities of both compounds were determined against three human pathogenic bacterial strains {Bacillus cereus ATCC 33,018, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027} and one phytopathogenic bacterial strain {Ralstonia solanacearum}, while drug standards {chloramphenicol and streptomycin} were used as control. The inhibitory activity and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the tested compounds clearly indicated higher antibacterial activities of the nickel compound against B. cereus ATCC 33,018, E. coli O157 and R. solanacearum with MIC values of 3.150, 3.150 and 6.300 mg/ml, respectively. On the other hand, (NH4)2[Co(H2O)6]2V10O28·4H2O exhibited higher antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 (MIC value of 6.300 mg/ml) in comparison to the nickel analog. In general, the measured activities are lower than that obtained for the standards except for the higher activity given by C2 in comparison to streptomycin against the R. solanacearum strain.

Vanadium as potential therapeutic agent for COVID-19: A focus on its antiviral, antiinflamatory, and antihyperglycemic effects

An increasing evidence suggests that vanadium compounds are novel potential drugs in the treatment of diabetes, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Vanadium has also demonstrated activities against RNA viruses and is a promising candidate for treating acute respiratory diseases. The antidiabetic, antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, cardioprotective, antineoplastic, antiviral, and other potential effects of vanadium are summarized here. Given the beneficial antihyperglycemic and antiinflammatory effects as well as the potential mechanistic link between the COVID-19 and diabetes, vanadium compounds could be considered as a complement to the prescribed treatment of COVID-19. Thus, further clinical trials are warranted to confirm these favorable effects of vanadium treatment in COVID-19 patients, which appear not to be studied yet.

Spectroscopic/Computational Characterization and the X-ray Structure of the Adduct of the VIVO-Picolinato Complex with RNase A

The structure, stability, and enzymatic activity of the adduct formed upon the reaction of the V-picolinato (pic) complex [VIVO(pic)2(H2O)], with an octahedral geometry and the water ligand in cis to the V═O group, with the bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNase A) were studied. While electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, circular dichroism, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy substantiate the interaction between the metal moiety and RNase A, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) allows us to determine that a carboxylate group, stemming from Asp or Glu residues, and imidazole nitrogen from His residues are involved in the V binding at acidic and physiological pH, respectively. Crystallographic data demonstrate that the VIVO(pic)2 moiety coordinates the side chain of Glu111 of RNase A, by substituting the equatorial water molecule at acidic pH. Computational methods confirm that Glu111 is the most affine residue and interacts favorably with the OC-6-23-Δ enantiomer establishing an extended network of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals stabilizations. By increasing the pH around neutrality, with the deprotonation of histidine side chains, the binding of the V complex to His105 and His119 could occur, with that to His105 which should be preferred when compared to that to the catalytically important His119. The binding of the V compound affects the enzymatic activity of RNase A, but it does not alter its overall structure and stability.

Vanadium(V) Complexes with Siderophore Vitamin E-Hydroxylamino-Triazine Ligands

Novel vitamin E chelate siderophore derivatives and their VV and FeIII complexes have been synthesised and the chemical and biological properties have been evaluated. In particular, the α- and δ-tocopherol derivatives with bis-methyldroxylamino triazine (α-tocTHMA) and (δ-tocDPA) as well their VV complexes, [V2VO3(α-tocTHMA)2] and [V2IVO3(δ-tocTHMA)2], have been synthesised and characterised by infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ultra violet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopies. The dimeric vanadium complexes in solution are in equilibrium with their respefrctive monomers, H2O + [V2VO2(μ-O)]4+ = 2 [VVO(OH)]2+. The two amphiphilic vanadium complexes exhibit enhanced hydrolytic stability. EPR shows that the complexes in lipophilic matrix are mild radical initiators. Evaluation of their biological activity shows that the compounds do not exhibit any significant cytotoxicity to cells.

Study of DNA Interaction and Cytotoxicity Activity of Oxidovanadium(V) Complexes with ONO Donor Schiff Base Ligands

Two new oxidovanadium(V) complexes, (HNEt3)[VVO2L] (1) and [(VVOL)2μ-O] (2), have been synthesized using a tridentate Schiff base ligand H2L [where H2L = 4-((E)-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenylimino)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol] and VO(acac)2 as starting metal precursor. The ligand and corresponding metal complexes are characterized by physicochemical (elemental analysis), spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV–Vis, and NMR), and spectrometric (ESI–MS) methods. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates the anion in salt 1 features a distorted square-pyramidal geometry for the vanadium(V) center defined by imine-N, two phenoxide-O, and two oxido-O atoms. The interaction of the compounds with CT–DNA was studied through UV–Vis absorption titration and circular dichroism methods. The results indicated that complexes showed enhanced binding affinity towards DNA compared to the ligand molecule. Finally, the in vitro cytotoxicity studies of H2L, 1, and 2 were evaluated against colon cancer (HT-29) and mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cell lines by MTT assay. The results demonstrated that the compounds manifested a cytotoxic potential comparable with clinically referred drugs and caused cell death by apoptosis.

Associations of prenatal exposure to vanadium with early-childhood growth: A prospective prenatal cohort study

Prenatal vanadium exposure is reported to be associated with restricted fetal growth and adverse birth outcomes. However, trimester-specific vanadium exposure in relation to early-childhood growth still remains unclear. A total of 1873 Chinese mother-infant pairs from whom a complete series of maternal urinary samples were collected over three stages of pregnancy were included from 2014 to 2016. The urinary concentrations of vanadium were analyzed. Children's anthropometric parameters were measured at birth, 6, 12 and 24 months. In boys, each doubling increase in vanadium concentrations at middle pregnancy was inversely associated with weight-for-length [- 9.07% (-17.21%, -0.93%)] and BMI z-score [- 9.66% (-18.05%, -1.28%)] at 24 months. Moreover, vanadium exposure at late pregnancy was negatively associated with weight [- 9.85% (-16.42%, -3.28%)], weight-for-length [- 11.00% (-18.40%, -3.60%)], and BMI z-scores [- 11.05% (-18.67%, -3.42%)] at 24 months in boys. However, the negative associations were not observed in girls, and we found evidence for sex difference (FDR p for interaction=0.01, 0.01 and 0.03 for weight, weight-for-length and BMI z-scores, respectively). Prenatal vanadium exposure may have an adverse effect on early-childhood growth, and the middle and late pregnancy could be windows of vulnerability for the adverse effects of vanadium exposure on growth development.

Monotherapy and Combination Therapy Using Anti-Angiogenic Nanoagents to Fight Cancer

Anti-angiogenic therapy, targeting vascular endothelial cells (ECs) to prevent tumor growth, has been attracting increasing attention in recent years, beginning with bevacizumab (Avastin) through its Phase II/III clinical trials on solid tumors. However, these trials showed only modest clinical efficiency; moreover, anti-angiogenic therapy may induce acquired resistance to the drugs employed. Combining advanced drug delivery techniques (e.g., nanotechnology) or other therapeutic strategies (e.g., chemotherapy, radiotherapy, phototherapy, and immunotherapy) with anti-angiogenic therapy results in significantly synergistic effects and has opened a new horizon in fighting cancer. Herein, clinical difficulties in using traditional anti-angiogenic therapy are discussed. Then, several promising applications of anti-angiogenic nanoagents in monotherapies and combination therapies are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of anti-angiogenic cancer therapy are summarized. A useful introduction to anti-angiogenic strategies, which may significantly improve therapeutic outcomes, is thus provided.

Characterization and antidiabetic activity of salicylhydrazone Schiff base vanadium(IV) and (V) complexes

Twenty-four oxidovanadium(IV,V) complexes with tridentate Schiff base ligands based on 5-nitrosalicylaldehyde, 5-methoxysalicylaldehyde, or 5-sulfosalicylaldehyde and respective hydrazide were isolated, and characterized using physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Three of them were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The biological activity studies included inhibition of human tyrosine phosphatases, studies on myocyte C2C12, adipocyte 3T3-L1, and human hepatocyte HepG2 cell lines, glucose uptake in myocytes and adipocytes, and cytotoxicity tests. The complexes that were unstable in solutions showed biological activity typical of other V(IV) complexes, while the stable one showed much higher, ligand-dependent, activity.

Effects of liquid digestate on the valence state of vanadium in plant and soil and microbial community response

Liquid digestate containing high levels of nutrients and humic and fatty acids can affect vanadium species and their plant uptake. To elucidate the effects of liquid digestate on the valence state of vanadium in soil and plant tissue, as well as its effects on the microbial community and soil properties, we grew green bristlegrass (Setaria viridis), a native plant capable of growing in vanadium mining areas, in vanadium-contaminated soils sampled from a mining area and treated it with 5% and 10% liquid digestate for 90 d, respectively. Changes in the concentrations of pentavalent (V[V]) and tetravalent (V[IV]) vanadium in the soils and the shoots and roots of bristlegrass and the soil microbial abundance were measured. The results showed that vanadium existed mainly in the form of V(IV) in the soil but accumulated mainly in the form of V(V) in the bristlegrass. Liquid digestate markedly reduced V(V) concentrations in the soils (by up to 45%) and in the shoots and roots of green bristlegrass (by up to 98%). Liquid digestate enhanced the abundance of Bacteroidetes, which can reduce V(V) to lower valence state. Microbial reduction and phosphorus immobilization were responsible for downregulating V(V) concentrations in the plant and soil. The liquid digestate can be used to enhance in situ bioremediation of vanadium-contaminated soil in mining area.

Vanadium: Risks and possible benefits in the light of a comprehensive overview of its pharmacotoxicological mechanisms and multi-applications with a summary of further research trends

BACKGROUND

Vanadium (V) is an element with a wide range of effects on the mammalian organism. The ability of this metal to form organometallic compounds has contributed to the increase in the number of studies on the multidirectional biological activity of its various organic complexes in view of their application in medicine.

OBJECTIVE

This review aims at summarizing the current state of knowledge of the pharmacological potential of V and the mechanisms underlying its anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-hypercholesterolemic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective activity as well as the mechanisms of appetite regulation related to the possibility of using this element in the treatment of obesity. The toxicological potential of V and the mechanisms of its toxic action, which have not been sufficiently recognized yet, as well as key information about the essentiality of this metal, its physiological role, and metabolism with certain aspects on the timeline is collected as well. The report also aims to review the use of V in the implantology and industrial sectors emphasizing the human health hazard as well as collect data on the directions of further research on V and its interactions with Mg along with their character.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Multidirectional studies on V have shown that further analyses are still required for this element to be used as a metallodrug in the fight against certain life-threatening diseases. Studies on interactions of V with Mg, which showed that both elements are able to modulate the response in an interactive manner are needed as well, as the results of such investigations may help not only in recognizing new markers of V toxicity and clarify the underlying interactive mechanism between them, thus improving the medical application of the metals against modern-age diseases, but also they may help in development of principles of effective protection of humans against environmental/occupational V exposure.

On the Capability of Oxidovanadium(IV) Derivatives to Act as All-Around Catalytic Promoters Since the Prebiotic World

For a long time the biological role of vanadium was not known, while now the possibility of using its derivatives as potential therapeutic agents has given rise to investigations on their probable side effects. Vanadium compounds may inhibit different biochemical processes and lead to a variety of toxic effects and serious diseases. But, on the other hand, vanadium is an essential element for life. In recent years, increasing evidence has been acquired on the possible roles of vanadium in the higher forms of life. Despite several biochemical and physiological functions that have been suggested for vanadium and notwithstanding the amount of the knowledge so far accumulated, it still does not have a clearly defined role in the higher forms of life. What functions could vanadium or its very stable oxidovanadium(IV) derivatives have had in the prebiotic world and in the origins of life? In this review, we have briefly tried to highlight the most useful aspects that can be taken into consideration to give an answer to this still unresolved question and to show the high versatility of the oxidovanadium(IV) group to act as promoter of several oxidation reactions when coordinated with a variety of ligands, including diketones like acylpyrazolones.

Synthesis of vitamin E and aliphatic lipid vanadium(IV) and (V) complexes, and their cytotoxic properties

Novel vitamin E chelate derivatives and their V^IV/V complexes have been synthesized and characterized, and their anticancer properties have been evaluated. The new complexes have been designed to exhibit enhanced cytotoxicity by combining high lipophilicity with the properties of vanadium to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In particular, the β-tocopherol derivatives with iminodiethanol (β-tocDEA) and dipicolylamine (β-tocDPA) as well their V^V and V^IV complexes, [V^VO(β-tocDEA] and [V^IVO(β-tocDPA] have been synthesized and characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Ultra Violet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Although the β-tocopherol compounds exhibit antioxidant activity their complexes induce formation of radicals. In addition, two vanadium amphiphilic complexes of 2,2'-((2-hydroxyoctadecyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol) (C18DEA) and 1-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)octadecan-2-ol (C18DPA) known to activate O₂ and produce ROS were synthesized and characterized (C. Drouza, A. Dieronitou, I. Hadjiadamou, M. Stylianou, J. Agric. Food. Chem., vol. 65, 2017, pp. 4942-4951). The four amphiphilic vanadium complexes exhibit enhanced hydrolytic stability. All compounds found to be cytotoxic for cancer cells exhibiting activity similar or higher to cis-platin.

Vanadium and insulin: Partners in metabolic regulation

Since the 1970s, the biological role of vanadium compounds has been discussed as insulin-mimetic or insulin-enhancer agents. The action of vanadium compounds has been investigated to determine how they influence the insulin signaling pathway. Khan and coworkers proposed key proteins for the insulin pathway study, introducing the concept "critical nodes". In this review, we also considered critical kinases and phosphatases that participate in this pathway, which will permit a better comprehension of a critical node, where vanadium can act: a) insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrates, and protein tyrosine phosphatases; b) phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase, 3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase and mammalian target of rapamycin complex, protein kinase B, and phosphatase and tensin homolog; and c) insulin receptor substrates and mitogen-activated protein kinases, each node having specific negative modulators. Additionally, leptin signaling was considered because together with insulin, it modulates glucose and lipid homeostasis. Even in recent literature, the possibility of vanadium acting against metabolic diseases or cancer is confirmed although the mechanisms of action are not well understood because these critical nodes have not been systematically investigated. Through this review, we establish that vanadium compounds mainly act as phosphatase inhibitors and hypothesize on their capacity to affect kinases, which are critical to other hormones that also act on common parts of the insulin pathway.

Oxovanadium(IV) and Nickel(II) complexes obtained from 2,2'-dihydroxybenzophenone-S-methyl-thiosemicarbazone: Synthesis, characterization, electrochemistry, and antioxidant capability

2,2'-Dihydroxybenzophenone-S-methyl-thiosemicarbazone and 3-methoxy-salicylaldehyde were reacted in the presence of oxovanadium(IV) or nickel(II) ions to yield the N2O2-type-chelate complex. The synthesized complexes were characterized by employing elemental analysis, electronic and infrared spectra, 1H NMR spectra, magnetic measurements, and thermogravimetric analyses. The expected structures of oxovanadium(IV) and nickel(II) complexes were confirmed by using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The presence of π-π stacked dimeric structures provided stronger crystalline formations. The optimized geometries and vibrational frequencies of the compounds were obtained using the DFT/ωB97XD method with the 6-31G (d,p) basis set and compared with the experimental data. The electrochemical characterization of the oxovanadium(IV) and nickel(II) complexes were carried out by using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. The oxovanadium(IV) complex gives a ligand-centered oxidation and a metal-centered one electron reduction and oxidation peaks corresponding to the VIV/IIIO and VIV/VO, respectively. The nickel(II) complex gives a ligand-centered oxidation and metal-centered (NiII/I) reduction peaks in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The redox potentials were calculated in terms of Gibbs free energy change of the redox reaction at the theory level of M06-L/LANL2DZ/PCM. In addition, the energy gap, HOMO and LUMO distributions were calculated. The total antioxidant capacities of the compounds were determined by using cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) method, in which the oxovanadium(IV) complex was found to be powerful as an antioxidant agent.

Synthesis, characterization, and biological properties of oxidovanadium(IV) complexes of acetylsalicylhydroxamic acid (N-acetyloxy-2-hydroxybenzamide) as potential antimicrobials

New oxidovanadium(IV) complexes of composition [VO(AcSHA)2] 1 and [VO(acac)(AcSHA)] 2 are synthesized by reactions of VOSO4.5H2O and [VO(acac)2] with acetylsalicylhydroxamic acid AcSH2A (C6H4(OH)(CONHOCOCH3)) in a 1:2 molar ratio in absolute ethanol. The compounds are characterized by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, electron spin resonance, and mass spectrometry along with elemental analyses, molar conductivity, and magnetic moment measurements. The infrared spectra of the complexes suggest bonding through carbonyl and phenolic oxygen atoms (O,O coordination). The magnetic moment, electron spin resonance, and mass spectra of the complexes indicate that both exist as monomers, and a distorted square pyramidal geometry around vanadium is proposed. The thermal behavior of the complexes is studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis techniques under an N2 atmosphere, yielding VO2 as the decomposition product. The in vitro antimicrobial assays against pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi (minimum inhibitory concentration method) show the appreciable antimicrobial potential relative to the respective standard drugs, tetracycline hydrochloride, and fluconazole.

Non-Oxido-Vanadium(IV) Metalloradical Complexes with Bidentate 1,2-Dithienylethene Ligands: Observation of Reversible Cyclization of the Ligand Scaffold in Solution

Derivatives of 1,2‐dithienylethene (DTE) have superb photochromic properties due to an efficient reversible photocyclization reaction of their hexatriene structure and, thus, have application potential in materials for optoelectronics and (multi‐responsive) molecular switches. Transition‐metal complexes bearing switchable DTE motifs commonly incorporate their coordination site rather distant from the hexatriene system. In this work the redox active ligand 1,2‐bis(2,5‐dimethylthiophen‐3‐yl)ethane‐1,2‐dione is described, which reacts with [V(TMEDA)₂Cl₂] to give a rare non‐oxido vanadium(IV) species 3(M,M/P,P). This blue complex has two bidentate en‐diolato ligands which chelate the V^IV center and give rise to two five‐membered metallacycles with the adjacent hexatriene DTE backbone bearing axial chirality. Upon irradiation with UVA light or prolonged heating in solution, the blue compound 3(M,M/P,P) converts into the purple atropisomer 4(para,M/para,P). Both complexes were isolated and structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis (using lab source and synchrotron radiation). The antiparallel configuration (M or P helicity) present in both 3(M,M/P,P) and 4(para,M/para,P) is a prerequisite for (reversible) 6π cyclization reactions. A CW EPR spectroscopic study reveals the metalloradical character for 3(M,M/P,P) and 4(para,M/para,P) and indicates dynamic reversible cyclization of the DTE backbone in complex 3(M,M/P,P) at ambient temperature in solution.

Protective Effects of Dietary Antioxidants against Vanadium-Induced Toxicity: A Review

Vanadium (V) in its inorganic forms is a toxic metal and a potent environmental and occupational pollutant and has been reported to induce toxic effects in animals and people. In vivo and in vitro data show that high levels of reactive oxygen species are often implicated in vanadium deleterious effects. Since many dietary (exogenous) antioxidants are known to upregulate the intrinsic antioxidant system and ameliorate oxidative stress-related disorders, this review evaluates their effectiveness in the treatment of vanadium-induced toxicity. Collected data, mostly from animal studies, suggest that dietary antioxidants including ascorbic acid, vitamin E, polyphenols, phytosterols, and extracts from medicinal plants can bring a beneficial effect in vanadium toxicity. These findings show potential preventive effects of dietary antioxidants on vanadium-induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, neurotoxicity, testicular toxicity, and kidney damage. The relevant mechanistic insights of these events are discussed. In summary, the results of studies on the role of dietary antioxidants in vanadium toxicology appear encouraging enough to merit further investigations.

Infrared spectra of complexes have indicated bonding through oxygen atoms of carbonyl and hydroxamic groups (O,O coordination). The magnetic moment, ESR, and mass spectra of the complexes suggested their monomeric nature, and a distorted square-pyramidal geometry around the vanadium has tentatively been proposed. The electrochemical behaviour of 1 and 2 has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. Thermal behaviour of the complexes studied by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis techniques has yielded VO2 as the decomposition product. The invitro antimicrobial activity of the ligand and complexes has been assayed against pathogenic bacteria and fungi by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The invitro antioxidant activity of the complexes has been determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method.

Trinuclear vanadium(iv) and vanadium(v) complexes derived from 2,4,6-triacetylphloroglucinol and study of their peroxidase mimicking activity

Solid state and solution studies of trinuclear V^IVO- and V^VO₂-complexes and their peroxidase mimicking activity, through oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome, are reported.

Vanadium and Oxidative Stress Markers - In Vivo Model: A Review

This review article is an attempt to summarize the current state of knowledge of the impact of Vanadium (V) on Oxidative Stress (OS) markers in vivo. It shows the results of our studies and studies conducted by other researchers on the influence of different V compounds on the level of selected Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)/Free Radicals (FRs), markers of Lipid peroxidation (LPO), as well as enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. It also presents the impact of ROS/peroxides on the activity of antioxidant enzymes modulated by V and illustrates the mechanisms of the inactivation thereof caused by this metal and reactive oxygen metabolites. It also focuses on the mechanisms of interaction of V with some nonenzymatic compounds of the antioxidative system. Furthermore, we review the routes of generation of oxygen-derived FRs and non-radical oxygen derivatives (in which V is involved) as well as the consequences of FR-mediated LPO (induced by this metal) together with the negative/ positive effects of LPO products. A brief description of the localization and function of some antioxidant enzymes and low-molecular-weight antioxidants, which are able to form complexes with V and play a crucial role in the metabolism of this element, is presented as well. The report also shows the OS historical background and OS markers (determined in animals under V treatment) on a timeline, collects data on interactions of V with one of the elements with antioxidant potential, and highlights the necessity and desirability of conducting studies of mutual interactions between V and antioxidant elements.

A geochemical perspective on the natural abundance of trace elements in beaver (Castor canadensis) from a rural region of southern Ontario, Canada

Chalcophile (Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, Zn) and lithophile (Al, Ba, Ce, Cr, Cs, Fe, La, Li, Mn, Nd, Rb, Sr, V, Y) trace elements (TEs) were determined in kidney, liver and muscle of beaver (Castor canadensis) from a rural watershed in southern Ontario, Canada. To estimate the relative bioavailability of TEs in the landscape, they were also determined in the dissolved (<0.45 μm) fraction of water from the river where the animals were harvested. Concentration ratios (tissue/water) always showed the greatest enrichments for Cd (kidney, 1.1 × 10⁷; liver, 2.4 × 10⁶; muscle, 7.2 × 10⁵), most likely due to the metal binding properties of metallothioneins. Despite its potential toxicity, Tl also showed considerable enrichment: kidney, 4.2 × 10⁴; liver 1.2 × 10⁴; muscle 1.5 × 10⁴. Enrichments of Cs and Rb exceeded those of Tl in all three tissues, suggesting that the chemical similarity of their ionic species (Cs⁺, Rb⁺, Tl⁺) to K⁺ may be the key to their uptake. Lithophile elements of limited solubility in natural waters (Al, Ce, La, Nd) show moderate enrichments, despite the lack of physiological role. The smallest enrichments were found for Sr and Ba, the two TEs which are most abundant in the river. Of the TEs considered essential for animal nutrition, V was the least enriched in tissue relative to water (liver 19×, kidney, 33× and muscle 28×). Despite the lack of physiological function and absence of any known sources of contamination, Al, Ag, Cd, Ce, Cs, La, Pb, Rb, and Tl, are all enriched in beaver tissue, relative to water, by at least three orders of magnitude, due to natural processes. The widespread abundance of beaver in Canada combined with the growing need to manage their numbers in populated regions offer a unique opportunity for monitoring environmental quality in the riparian zone.

The effect of vanadium on essential element uptake of Setaria viridis' seedlings

High concentrations of vanadium, a ubiquitous element in the environment, in growing media leads to deformation of root structure and leaf chlorosis and necrosis, consequently affecting the translocations of nutrients and essential elements. However, the effects of vanadium on essential element uptake, and the interactions of essential elements in the presence of vanadium, remain incompletely understood. To elucidate the effects of different concentrations of vanadium on major and trace essential elements and plant growth, a native plant species growing in a vanadium mining area, Setaria viridis (dog tail's grass), was incubated in solutions containing 0-55.8 mg/L vanadium. The shoot accumulation of four major essential elements and five trace essential elements was detected, and the root length and stem height were measured. The results showed that vanadium in soil solution enhanced the accumulation of all major essential elements in shoot. Vanadium concentrations lower than 47.4 mg/L showed an obvious positive (p < 0.05) effect on P accumulation and translocation. In the case of trace essential elements, there were threshold values for solution vanadium stimulation of element uptake. The threshold values for Cu and Zn, Fe, and Mo uptake were 4.3, 16.3, and 40.6 mg/L, respectively. When vanadium levels surpassed these values, accumulation was suppressed and the solution vanadium concentrations attenuated the solution-to-shoot translocation of most of the essential elements. Among the trace essential elements, translocation of Fe was obviously enhanced (p < 0.05) by vanadium. Solution vanadium also enhanced plant growth at lower concentrations and inhibited it at higher levels. The threshold values for stem height and root length were 36.8 and 16.3 mg/L, respectively. Concentrations of 40 and 55.8 mg/L vanadium in soil solution caused a 50% decrease in root length and stem height, respectively, showing that root length of Setaria viridis is more susceptible to vanadium toxicity than stem growth.
