Abstract
We introduce two water-soluble excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) based fluorescent turn-on probes responding to inorganic polyphosphates. These ESIPT probes enable specific detection of short-chain inorganic polyphosphates over a range of different condensed phosphates. The probes are weakly emissive in their off-state due to the blocking of ESIPT by Cu2+ coordination. Removal of the copper ion through decomplexation by the analyte accesses the on-state. The probes detect polyphosphates over other biologically occurring phosphates, pyrophosphate, and nucleotides such as ATP, ADP, GTP. An optimal fluorescence response is observed with the short-chain polyphosphate polyP8. Furthermore, the probe shows selectivity towards linear polyphosphates over cyclic metaphosphates. The rapid 'turn-off-turn-on' fluorescence responses upon consecutive addition of Cu2+ and polyP8 are reversible, further highlighting sensor performance in an aqueous environment. One of the sensors is then used to monitor polyP digestion by an exopolyphosphatase (PPX).

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a well-established toxic gas but also an important small molecule bioregulator in all kingdoms of life. In contemporary biology, H2S is often classified as a "gasotransmitter," meaning that it is an endogenously produced membrane permeable gas that carries out essential cellular processes. Fluorescent probes for H2S and related reactive sulfur species (RSS) detection provide an important cornerstone for investigating the multifaceted roles of these important small molecules in complex biological systems. A now common approach to develop such tools is to develop "activity-based probes" that couple a specific H2S-mediated chemical reaction to a fluorescent output. This Review covers the different types of such probes and also highlights the chemical mechanisms by which each probe type is activated by specific RSS. Common examples include reduction of oxidized nitrogen motifs, disulfide exchange, electrophilic reactions, metal precipitation, and metal coordination. In addition, we also outline complementary activity-based probes for imaging reductant-labile and sulfane sulfur species, including persulfides and polysulfides. For probes highlighted in this Review, we focus on small molecule systems with demonstrated compatibility in cellular systems or related applications. Building from breadth of reported activity-based strategies and application, we also highlight key unmet challenges and future opportunities for advancing activity-based probes for H2S and related RSS.

Abstract
Easy-to-synthesize aminoquinoline (AQ) appended naphthoquinone (NQ)-based colorimetric and ratiometric probe (AQNQ) was successfully synthesized in one step with high yield and low cost, and was utilized to supply an effective solution to critical shortcomings encountered in Cu2+ analysis. The structure of AQNQ and its interaction with Cu2+ forming an unusual AQNQ-Cu complex were enlightened with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and different spectroscopic methods. AQNQ-Cu complex is the first Cu2+ containing dinuclear crystal where the octahedral coordination sphere is fulfilled through the coordination of a NQ oxygen atom. AQNQ exhibited long-term stability (more than 1 month), superior probe ability toward Cu2+ with quite fast response (30 s), high selectivity among many ions, and limit of detection of 12.13 ppb that is significantly below the highest amount of Cu2+ allowed in drinking water established by both WHO and EPA. Ratiometric determination of Cu2+ using AQNQ was performed with high recovery and low RSD values for drinking water, tap water, lake water, cherry, and watermelon samples. Colorimetric on-site determination including smartphone and paper strip applications, IMPLICATION, and INHIBIT logic gate applications were successfully carried out. The reversibility and reusability of the response to Cu2+ ions with the paper strip application were examined for the first time.

Abstract
In this study, a simple Schiff base sensor 1-(((4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol(NNM) has been used for chemosensing of metal ions. The metal sensing properties of sensor NNM have been investigated using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic approaches. The spectral investigations revealed a red shift in absorption spectra and quenching in the emission band of the ligand molecule in the presence of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. The binding stoichiometry of sensor NNM for the analyte (Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions) has been investigated by the Job's plot analysis and found to be 1:1 (NNM:Analyte). The data of the Benesi-Hildebrand plot demonstrated that NNM detected Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions in nanomolar quantity. The binding insights among NNM and analytes (Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions) have been confirmed by shifted IR signals. Moreover, the reusabilty of the sensor has been investigated using an EDTA solution. In addition, the sensor NNM also successfully applied to real water samples for the identification and measurement of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. Hence, this system could be highly applicable in environmental and biological applications.

Abstract
Stimulus-responsive fluorescent-modified biopolymers have received significant attention in the field of chemosensors. Herein, four new fluorescent dyes, namely, S1: (PDA-DANC), S2: (SAL-PDA-DANC), S3: (BrSAL-PDA-DANC) and S4: (ClSAL-PDA-DANC) have been successfully synthesized from 2,3-dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC) for the detection of heavy metals. The microstructural and photophysical properties of nanocellulose (NC), microcrystalline cellulose (DANC) and the synthesized S1 to S4 dyes were investigated by FT-IR, SEM-EDX, XRD, TGA, DLS and photoluminescence. NC, obtained from conversion of MCC, shows an average size of 802.4 nm with 0.141 of polydispersity index (PdI), and a crystalline index (CI) of 82.40 % and crystallite size of 4.68 nm. The synthesized dyes present good fluorescent properties and have been therefore exploited for developing new probes for heavy metal ions detection. Remarkable "turn off" and/or "turn on" behaviors with Fe3+ and Cu2+ and with Zn2+ in DMF/water solution have been demonstrated, allowing the sensitive and selective determination of these heavy metal ions with a low limit of detection (LOD). Finally, the evaluation of the Fe3+ sensing in a real seawater sample was investigated.

Abstract
A state-of-the-art method was developed for repurposing nitrone-containing compounds in the chemosensory field, the ability of the designed molecules to chelate metal cations was evaluated, and their unprecedented solubility in water was confirmed. A facile, rapid, and solvent-free method of synthesizing small molecular mass chemosensors was developed by using a modulative α-aryl-N-aryl nitrone template. α-(Z)-Imidazol-4-ylmethylen-N-phenyl nitrone (Nit1) and α-(Z)-2-pyridyl-N-phenyl nitrone (Nit2) were prepared in 15 min, isolated in less than 60 min with ca. 90% yield, and screened against nine metal cations. Nit1 is a small-molecular-mass compound (188 g mol-1) that is water-soluble and has specificity for sensing Cu2+ with an association constant of K = 1.53 × 1010 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 ppm. These properties make Nit1 a competitive chemosensor for the detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution. The nitrone-containing template used in this study is a step forward for new and small chemosensory entities.

Abstract
A new chemosensor 1 was synthesized by reacting rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde, which was then characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Sensor 1 has the ability to sense Co2+/Cu2+ ions by "naked-eye" with an apparent colour change from colourless to pink in different solvent system, MeCN and DMF respectively. Furthermore, it can selectively detect Co2+/Cu2+ among wide range of different metal ions, and it exhibits low detection limit of 4.425 × 10-8 M and 1.398 × 10-7 M respectively. Binding mode of the two complexes were determined to be 1:1 stoichiometry for Co2+ complex and 1:2 stoichiometry for Cu2+ complex through Job's plot, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, reversibility of the sensor 1 as copper (II) ion detector was determined by using EDTA and the results showed that sensor 1 can be reused for at least 6 cycles. Other than that, a low cost chemosensor test strips were fabricated for the convenient "naked-eye" detection of Co2+ and Cu2+ in pure aqueous media. The MTT assay was conducted in order to determine the cytotoxicity of sensor 1 towards human cell lines.

Abstract
A completely water-soluble, high quantum yield blue-fluorescent benzimidazole derivative (AQ), containing a rigid benzimidazole-thiophene structure, was synthesized. Among 21 metal ions, the fluorescence of AQ was selectively turned off by Cu2+ to form an AQ-Cu2+ ensemble. Thereafter, the fluorescence of the AQ-Cu2+ ensemble was turned on by sulfide (S2-) with high selectivity and sensitivity in pure water solution. In comparison with AQ-Ag+ and AQ-Hg2+ ensembles, AQ-Cu2+ was the only ensemble that was capable of detecting a sulfide anion. Also, the fluorescence intensity of AQ was linearly proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ and S2-. Both Cu2+ and S2- were detected within a minute in vitro. Moreover, AQ worked best in the pH range of 5-10 and had a limit of detection of 50 nM and 354 nM for Cu2+ and S2- respectively. It was employed for the detection of sulfide in human lung cancer A549 cells with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Herein, we have investigated principally with the use of UV and fluorescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopy the interactions between selected pentapeptides with tyrosine residue (EYHHQ, EHYHQ, EHHQY, and KYHHE) and various metal ions (Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Cd2+, Ag+, Pb2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Fe2+, and Ga3+) in order to establish the relationship between the position of a tyrosine residue in the peptide sequence and the metal ion-binding properties. Among the peptides studied, EHYHQ was evaluated as an efficient and selective ligand for developing a chemosensor for the detection of copper(II) ions. While significant fluorescence emission quenching was observed for that peptide in the presence of Cu2+ cations, other metal cations used at the same and at considerably higher concentrations caused a negligible change of the fluorescence emission spectrum, indicating a high selectivity of EHYHQ for Cu2+ ions. Under optimum conditions, fluorescence intensity was inversely proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ ions. The limit of detection of Cu2+ ions with the use of EHYHQ was determined at the level of 26.6 nM. The binding stoichiometry of the complexes of the studied peptides with Cu2+ ions was evaluated spectrophotometrically and fluorimetrically (as in the case of EHYHQ confirmed by mass spectrometry) and found to be 1:2 (Cu2+-peptide) for all the investigated systems. Furthermore, the stability constant (K) values of these complexes were determined. The reversibility of the proposed Cu2+ ions sensor was confirmed, the pH range where the sensor acts was determined, while its analytical performance was compared with some other reported recently fluorescent sensors. The mechanism of the interactions between EHYHQ and Cu2+ was proposed on the basis of NMR spectroscopy investigations.

Abstract
Design and development of multifunctional materials have drawn incredible attraction in recent years. Herein, we report the design and construction of versatile star-shaped intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-coupled excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-active mechanoresponsive and aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) luminogen triaminoguanidine-diethylaminophenol (LH3 ) conjugate from simple precursors triaminoguanidine hydrochloride and 4-(N,N-diethylamino)salicylaldehyde. Solvent-dependent dual emission in nonpolar to polar protic solvents implies the presence of ICT-coupled ESIPT features in the excited state. Aggregation-enhanced emissive feature of LH3 was established in the CH3CN/water mixture. Furthermore, this compound exhibits mechanochromic fluorescence behavior upon external grinding. Fluorescence microscopy images of pristine, crystal, and crushed crystals confirm the naked-eye mechanoresponsive characteristics of LH3 . In addition, LH3 selectively sensed a Cu2+ ion through a colorimetric and fluorescence "turn-off" route, and subsequently, the LH3 -Cu2+ ensemble could act as a selective and sensitive sensor for S2- in a "turn-on" fluorescence manner via a metal displacement approach. Reversible "turn-off-turn-on" features of LH3 with Cu2+/S2- ions were efficiently demonstrated to construct the IMPLICATION logic gate function. The Cu2+/S2--responsive sensing behavior of LH3 was established in the paper strip experiment also, which can easily be characterized by the naked eye under daylight as well as a UV lamp (λ = 365 nm).

Abstract
A novel SBA-15-based fluorescent sensor, SBA-PI: mesoporous SBA-15 structure modified with iminostilbene groups, was designed, synthesized, and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), low-angle X-ray diffraction techniques (low-angle XRD), and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The SBA-PI as a sensor with a selective behavior for detection of Cu2+ comprises iminostilbene carbonyl as the fluorophore group. The SBA-PI sensor displays an excellent fluorescence response in aqueous solutions and the fluorescence intensity quenches remarkably upon addition of Cu2+. Other common interfering ions even at high concentration ratio showed either no or very small changes in the fluorescence intensity of SBA-PI in the absence of Cu2+. A limit of detection of 8.7 × 10-9 M for Cu2+ indicated that this fluorescence sensor has a high sensitivity and selectivity toward the target copper (II) ion. The fabricated Cu2+ sensor was successfully applied for the determination of the Cu2+ in human blood samples without any significant interference. With the selective analysis of Cu2+ ions down to 0.9 nM in blood, the sensor is a promising and a novel detection candidate for Cu2+ and can be applied in the clinical laboratory. A reversibility and accuracy in the fluorescence behavior of the sensor was found in the presence of I¯ that was described as a masking agent for Cu2+. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
A two-photon active probe for physiological copper (Cu2+) detection is expected to play an important role in monitoring biological metabolism. Herein, a novel Schiff base derivative (E)-2,2'-((4-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)phenyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol) (L) with remarkable two-photon activity was developed and synthetically investigated. L presents high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu2+ sensing in ethanol/HEPES buffer (v/v, 1 : 1), which is accompanied by the fluorescence switching "off" and subsequently "on" with the addition of EDTA. The mechanism for the detection of Cu2+ is further analyzed using 1H NMR titration, mass spectra and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, since the probe L possesses good photophysical properties, excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, it is successfully applied to track Cu2+ in the cellular endoplasmic reticulum by two-photon fluorescence imaging, showing its potential value for practical applications in biological systems.

Abstract
In the current study, we reported a novel label-free and facile colorimetric approach for the sequential detection of copper ion (Cu2+), L-arginine (Arg), and L-cysteine (Cys) in the H2O (10.0 mmol L-1 HEPES buffer solution, pH 7.0) using Reactive Blue 4 (RB4). First, the presence of Cu2+ led to a naked-eye color and spectral changes according to the binding site-signaling subunit approach. Then, the RB4-Cu2+ complex was successfully applied for Cys and Arg through different recognition pathways. The optical signals for Arg were observed due to its association involving the amino group, as well as the participation of the carboxylate group in a bidentate form to the complex, while selective behavior for Cys was explained by a metal displacement mechanism. The limits of detection for Cu2+, Arg, and Cys were calculated to be 1.96, 1.06, and 1.33 μmol L-1, respectively. It could also be employed for the determination of three analytes in environmental, biological, and pharmaceutical samples. Importantly, the test strips based on RB4-Cu2+ complex could be used as a solid-state sensor for the detection of Cys and Arg. In addition, NAND and IMPLICATION molecular logic gates were obtained by using chemical inputs and UV-Vis absorbance signal as the output. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
A zinc sensor based on quinoline and morpholine has been synthesized. The sensor selectively fluoresces in the presence of Zn2+, while not for other metal ions. Absorbance changes in the 350nm region are observed when Zn2+ binds, which binds in a 1:1 ratio. The sensor fluoresces due to Zn2+ above pH values of 6.0 and in the biological important region. The Zn2+-sensor complex has the unique ability to detect both Hg2+ and HS-. The fluorescence of the Zn2+-sensor complex is quenched when it is exposed to aqueous solutions of Hg2+ with sub-micromolar detection levels for Hg2+. The fluorescence of the Zn2+-sensor complex is also quenched by aqueous solutions of hydrosulfide. The sensor was used to detect Zn2+ and Hg2+ in living cells.

Abstract
The design of effective tools for detecting copper ion (Cu2+) and sulfide anion (S2-) is of great importance due to the abnormal level of Cu2+ and S2- has been associated with an increase in risk of many diseases. Herein, we report on the fabrication of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) based fluorescent probe PF (PEI-FITC) for detecting Cu2+ and S2- in 100% aqueous media via a facile one-pot method by covalent linking fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) with branched-polyethylenimine (b-PEI). PF could selectively coordinate with Cu2+ among 10 metal ions to form PF-Cu2+ complex, resulting in fluorescence quenching through FRET mechanism. Furthermore, the in situ generated PF-Cu2+ complex can be used to selectively detect S2- based on the displacement approach, resulting in an off-on type sensing. There is no obvious interference from other anions, such as Cl-, NO3-, ClO4-, SO42-, HCO3-, CO32-, Br-, HPO42-, F- and S2O32-. In addition, PF was successfully used to determine Cu2+ and S2- in human serum and tap water samples. Therefore, the FRET-based probe PF may provide a new method for selective detection of multifarious analysts in biological and environmental applications, and even hold promise for application in more complicated systems.

Abstract
The hexadentate ligands H2L1-L3 with mixed S, N, O donor sites and possessing substituents having either "no" or electron-releasing/withdrawing nature at terminal ends are synthesized. The ligands H2L1-L3 were tested for binding with library of metal ions, wherein maximum efficiency was observed with Ni(2+), and it motivated us to prepare the Ni(2+) complexes. The ligand H2L1 underwent deprotonation and formed binuclear complex when interacted with Ni(2+) as evident from its crystal structure. The H2L2 and H2L3 having electron-withdrawing/electron releasing groups, respectively, were also deprotonated; however, they afforded mononuclear complexes with Ni(2+) ion. This signifies the importance of steric parameters instead of electronic factors in these particular cases. Impressed by differential behavior of complexes of H2L1 and H2L2/H2L3 with Ni(2+) and their photophysical and electrochemical properties, all the metal complexes were studied for their chemosensing ability. Nowadays with increased use of organophosphate, there is alarming increase of these agents in the environment, and thus we require efficient technique to estimate the level of these agents with high sensitivity and selectivity in aqueous medium. The Ni(2+) complexes with hydrophobic nature were suspended into aqueous medium for testing them as sensor for organophosphate. The (L1)2.(Ni(2+))2 could sense phosmet with detection limit of 44 nM, whereas L2.Ni(2+) and L3.Ni(2+) exhibited the detection limits of 62 and 71 nM, respectively, for chlorpyrifos.
