Direct writing of 3D conjugated polymer micro/nanostructures for organic electronics and bioelectronics

3D direct writing and meniscus-guided pen writing methods, which are capable of fabricating 3D micro/nanostructures from soluble π-conjugated polymers (CPs) and CP precursors, and recent advances in these techniques are addressed in this review.

Multifunctional molecular charge-transfer thin films

We report the controlled interfacial interaction in crystallized organic charge transfer thin films, consisting of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and C60. The induced broad-band absorption from the UV to near-infrared region leads to a wavelength dependent ambipolar (negative/positive) photoresponse, while multi-stimuli responsive behavior is achieved through charge-transfer interactions. In addition, by coupling with the tetrathiafulvalene-(7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) charge transfer complex, a significantly increased conductivity is achieved. The controlled interfacial charge transfer interaction provides an efficient approach to obtain multifunctional molecular crystallized thin films with a superior external stimuli response.

Negative photoresponse in ZnO-PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites and photogating effects

We report negative photoresponse or increase of resistance in nanocomposites of n-type ZnO nanoparticles dispersed in a p-type polymer (PEDOT:PSS) under UV and visible light excitation, contrary to that of planar heterojunctions of the constituents. The underlying mechanism of charge transport, specifically negative photoresponse, is explored using spectroscopic and opto-electrical characterisation. Systemic variability in conductance, photoresponse sensitivity and rate with fractional nanoparticle loading in the nanocomposite is demonstrated. Here, photogenerated electrons in ZnO nanoparticles, trapped by the unbiased interfacial barrier, are understood to localize holes in the PEDOT:PSS conduction channel thereby increasing the overall nanocomposite resistance. Reversibility of the negative PR although with a slow decay rate bears testament to the proposed photogating mechanism as opposed to photocatalytic activity. Replacement of the p-type polymer with an electron transport matrix turns the negative photoresponse positive accentuating the role of the interfacial barrier in tuning the optoelectronic response of the composites. These hybrid materials and their unusual behaviour provide alternative strategies for building devices with novel photogating effects, exploiting the properties of their nanostructured forms.

Direct Writing and Characterization of Three-Dimensional Conducting Polymer PEDOT Arrays

Direct writing is an effective and versatile technique for three-dimensional (3D) fabrication of conducting polymer (CP) structures. It is precisely localized and highly controllable, thus providing great opportunities for incorporating CPs into microelectronic array devices. Herein we demonstrate 3D writing and characterization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) pillars in an array format, by using an in-house-constructed variant of scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM). CP pillars with different aspect ratios were successfully fabricated by optimizing the writing parameters: pulling speed, pulling time, concentration of the polymer solution, and the micropipette tip diameter. Especially, super high aspect ratio pillars of around 7 μm in diameter and 5000 μm in height were fabricated, indicating a good capability of this direct writing technique. Additions of an organic solvent and a cross-linking agent contribute to a significantly enhanced water stability of the pillars, critical if the arrays were to be used in biologically relevant applications. Surface morphologies and structural analysis of CP pillars were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Electrochemical properties of the individual pillars of different heights were examined by cyclic voltammetry using a double-barrel micropipette as an electrochemical cell. Exceptional mechanical properties of the pillars, such as high flexibility and robustness, were observed when bent by applying a force. The 3D pillar arrays are expected to provide versatile substrates for functionalized and integrated biological sensing and electrically addressable array devices.

Progression in the Fountain Pen Approach: From 2D Writing to 3D Free-Form Micro/Nanofabrication

The fountain pen approach, as a means for transferring materials to substrates, has shown numerous incarnations in recent years for creating 2D micro/nanopatterns and even generating 3D free-form nanostructures using a variety of material "inks". While the idea of filled reservoirs used to deliver material to a substrate via a capillary remains unchanged since antiquity, the advent of precise micromanipulation systems and functional material "inks" allows the extension of this mechanism to more high-tech applications. Herein, the recent growth in meniscus guided fountain pen approaches for benchtop micro/nanofabrication, which has occurred in the last decade, is discussed. Particular attention is given to the theory, equipment, and experimentation encompassing this unique direct writing approach. A detailed exploration of the diverse ink systems and functional device applications borne from this strategy is put forth to reveal its rapid expansion to a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines. As such, this informative review is provided for researchers considering adoption of this recent advancement of a familiar technology.

Flexible Photodetectors Based on 1D Inorganic Nanostructures

Flexible photodetectors with excellent flexibility, high mechanical stability and good detectivity, have attracted great research interest in recent years. 1D inorganic nanostructures provide a number of opportunities and capabilities for use in flexible photodetectors as they have unique geometry, good transparency, outstanding mechanical flexibility, and excellent electronic/optoelectronic properties. This article offers a comprehensive review of several types of flexible photodetectors based on 1D nanostructures from the past ten years, including flexible ultraviolet, visible, and infrared photodetectors. High-performance organic-inorganic hybrid photodetectors, as well as devices with 1D nanowire (NW) arrays, are also reviewed. Finally, new concepts of flexible photodetectors including piezophototronic, stretchable and self-powered photodetectors are examined to showcase the future research in this exciting field.

Quantitative Probing of Cu(2+) Ions Naturally Present in Single Living Cells

Quantitative probing of Cu(2+) ions naturally present in single living cells is realized by developing a quantum-dot-embedded nanowire-waveguide probe. The intracellular Cu(2+) ion concentration is quantified by direct monitoring of photoluminescence quenching during the insertion of the nanowire in a living neuron. The measured intracellular Cu(2+) ion concentration is 3.34 ± 1.04 × 10(-6) m (mean ± s.e.m.) in single hippocampal neurons.

Solvothermal synthesis, stirring-assisted assembly and photoelectric performance of Te nanowires

The uniform Te nanowires in large quantity were synthesized by a PVP-assisted solvothermal process under mild conditions, and then assembled into ordered alignment. An infrared photodetector based on the well aligned Te nanowires exhibits excellent photoresponse properties.

A light-driven supramolecular nanowire actuator

A single photomechanical supramolecular nanowire actuator with an azobenzene-containing 1,3,5-tricarboxamide derivative is developed by employing a direct writing method. Single nanowires display photoinduced reversible bending and the bending behavior follows first-order kinetics associated with azobenzene photoisomerization. A wireless photomechanical nanowire tweezers that remotely manipulates a single micro-particle is also demonstrated.

A stretchable nanowire UV-Vis-NIR photodetector with high performance

A simple direct-writing technique can be used to fabricate a stretchable UV-vis-NIR nanowire photodetector (NWPD) consisting of PbS quantum dot (QD)-poly(3-hexylthiopehene) (P3HT) hybrid NWs. The hybrid NWPD shows superior sensitivity and response speed in the UV-vis to NIR range. The stretchable UV-vis-NIR NWPD shows a nearly identical photoresponse under extreme (up to 100%) and repeated (up to 100 cycles) stretching conditions.
