Improving Environmental and Operational Stability of Polymer Field-Effect Transistors by Doping with Tetranitrofluorenone

Operational instability of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) is one of the key limitations for applications of printed electronics. Environmental species, especially oxygen and water, unintentionally introduced in the OFET channel, can act as either dopants or traps for charge carriers, affecting the electrical characteristics and stability of devices. Here, we report that intentional doping of the benchmark p-type semiconducting polymer (DPP-DTT) with 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorenone (TeNF) markedly improves the operational and environmental stability of OFETs. Electrical interrogation of DPP-DTT OFETs in various environments and at variable temperatures shows suppression of electron-induced traps and increase of hole mobility in oxygen-rich environment, while the water molecules act as traps for positive charge carrier, reducing the hole mobility and significantly shifting the threshold voltage. Doping of DPP-DTT with TeNF suppresses both effects, resulting in environmentally independent performance and superior long-term stability of unencapsulated devices for up to 4 months in ambient air. Furthermore, the doped OFETs exhibit dramatically reduced hysteresis and bias-stressed current drop. Such improvement of the environmental and operational stabilities is ascribed to the mitigation of traps induced by the injected minority carrier (electrons) and the reduction of the majority carrier (hole) traps in doped polymer films due to enhanced microstructural order.

Flexible Electronics Based on Organic Semiconductors: from Patterned Assembly to Integrated Applications

Organic flexible electronic devices are at the forefront of the electronics as they possess the potential to bring about a major lifestyle revolution owing to outstanding properties of organic semiconductors, including solution processability, lightweight and flexibility. For the integration of organic flexible electronics, the precise patterning and ordered assembly of organic semiconductors have attracted wide attention and gained rapid developments, which not only reduces the charge crosstalk between adjacent devices, but also enhances device uniformity and reproducibility. This review focuses on recent advances in the design, patterned assembly of organic semiconductors, and flexible electronic devices, especially for flexible organic field-effect transistors (FOFETs) and their multifunctional applications. First, typical organic semiconductor materials and material design methods are introduced. Based on these organic materials with not only superior mechanical properties but also high carrier mobility, patterned assembly strategies on flexible substrates, including one-step and two-step approaches are discussed. Advanced applications of flexible electronic devices based on organic semiconductor patterns are then highlighted. Finally, future challenges and possible directions in the field to motivate the development of the next generation of flexible electronics are proposed.

Synthesis and structural analysis of dimethylaminophenyl-end-capped diketopyrrolopyrrole for highly stable electronic devices with polymeric gate dielectric

The synthesis and structural analysis of DPP(PhNMe₂)₂, a stable diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative end-capped with a strongly electron-donating dimethylaminophenyl moiety is reported and the origin of ambient stability is analyzed in detail.

Toward Environmentally Robust Organic Electronics: Approaches and Applications

Recent interest in flexible electronics has led to a paradigm shift in consumer electronics, and the emergent development of stretchable and wearable electronics is opening a new spectrum of ubiquitous applications for electronics. Organic electronic materials, such as π-conjugated small molecules and polymers, are highly suitable for use in low-cost wearable electronic devices, and their charge-carrier mobilities have now exceeded that of amorphous silicon. However, their commercialization is minimal, mainly because of weaknesses in terms of operational stability, long-term stability under ambient conditions, and chemical stability related to fabrication processes. Recently, however, many attempts have been made to overcome such instabilities of organic electronic materials. Here, an overview is provided of the strategies developed for environmentally robust organic electronics to overcome the detrimental effects of various critical factors such as oxygen, water, chemicals, heat, and light. Additionally, molecular design approaches to π-conjugated small molecules and polymers that are highly stable under ambient and harsh conditions are explored; such materials will circumvent the need for encapsulation and provide a greater degree of freedom using simple solution-based device-fabrication techniques. Applications that are made possible through these strategies are highlighted.

Hierarchical on-surface synthesis and electronic structure of carbonyl-functionalized one- and two-dimensional covalent nanoarchitectures

The fabrication of nanostructures in a bottom-up approach from specific molecular precursors offers the opportunity to create tailored materials for applications in nanoelectronics. However, the formation of defect-free two-dimensional (2D) covalent networks remains a challenge, which makes it difficult to unveil their electronic structure. Here we report on the hierarchical on-surface synthesis of nearly defect-free 2D covalent architectures with carbonyl-functionalized pores on Au(111), which is investigated by low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. The carbonyl-bridged triphenylamine precursors form six-membered macrocycles and one-dimensional (1D) chains as intermediates in an Ullmann-type coupling reaction that are subsequently interlinked to 2D networks. The electronic band gap is narrowed when going from the monomer to 1D and 2D surface-confined π-conjugated organic polymers comprising the same building block. The significant drop of the electronic gap from the monomer to the polymer confirms an efficient conjugation along the triphenylamine units within the nanostructures.

Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds: Synthetic Routes, Properties, and Applications

Two-dimensionally extended, polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules (heterocyclic nanographenes) are a highly versatile class of organic materials, applicable as functional chromophores and organic semiconductors. In this Review, we discuss the rich chemistry of large heteroaromatics, focusing on their synthesis, electronic properties, and applications in materials science. This Review summarizes the historical development and current state of the art in this rapidly expanding field of research, which has become one of the key exploration areas of modern heterocyclic chemistry.

Thermally Stable and Sterilizable Polymer Transistors for Reusable Medical Devices

We realize a thermally stable polymer thin film transistor (TFT) that is able to endure the standard autoclave sterilization for reusable medical devices. A thermally stable semiconducting polymer poly[4-(4,4-dihexadecyl-4Hcyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b]dithiophen-2-yl)-alt[1,2,5]thiadiazolo [3,4c] pyridine], which is stable up to 350 °C in N2 and 200 °C in air, is used as channel layer, whereas the biocompatible SU-8 polymer is used as a flexible dielectric layer, in addition to conventional SiO2 dielectric layer. Encapsulating with in-house designed composite film laminates as moisture barrier, both TFTs using either SiO2 or SU-8 dielectric layer exhibit good stability in sterilized conditions without significant change in mobility and threshold voltage. After sterilization for 30 min in autoclave, the mobility drops only 15%; from as-fabricated mobility of 1.4 and 1.3 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) to 1.2 and 1.1 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) for TFTs with SiO2 and SU-8 dielectric layer, respectively. Our TFT design along with experimental results reveal the opportunity on organic/polymer flexible TFTs in sterilizable/reusable medical device application.

The synthesis, characterization and flexible OFET application of three (Z)-1,2-bis(4-(tert-butyl)phenyl)ethane based copolymers
