Effects of zeolite imidazole frameworks on rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.): Phytotoxicity, transformation, and bioaccumulation

Zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs), a class of the metal organic framework, have been extensively studied in environmental applications. However, their environmental fate and potential ecological impact on plants remain unknown. Here, we investigated the phytotoxicity, transformation, and bioaccumulation processes of two typical ZIFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under hydroponic conditions. ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 in the concentration of 50 mg/L decreased root and shoot dry weight maximally by 55.2% and 27.5%, 53.5% and 37.5%, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that ZIFs on the root surface gradually collapsed and transformed into nanosheets with increasing cultivation time. The fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled ZIFs were applied to trace the uptake and translocation of ZIFs in rice. The results demonstrated that the transformed ZIFs were mainly distributed in the intercellular spaces of rice root, while they cannot be transported to culms and leaves. Even so, the Co and Zn contents of rice roots and shoots in the ZIFs treated groups were increased by 1145% and 1259%, 145% and 259%, respectively, compared with the control groups. These findings suggested that the phytotoxicity of ZIFs are primarily attributed to the transformed ZIFs and to a less extent, the metal ions and their ligands, and they were internalized by rice root and increased the Co and Zn contents of shoots. This study reported the transformation of ZIFs and their biological effectiveness in rice, highlighting the potential environmental hazards and risks of ZIFs to crop plants.

Rapid solar-driven atmospheric water-harvesting with MAF-4-derived nitrogen-doped nanoporous carbon

Sorption-based atmospheric water-harvesting (AWH) could help to solve global freshwater scarcity. The search for adsorbents with high water-uptake capacity at low relative humidity, rapid adsorption-desorption kinetics and high thermal conductivity is a critical challenge in AWH. Herein, we report a MAF-4 (aka ZIF-8)-derived nanoporous carbon (NPCMAF-4-800) with multiple N-doped sites, considerable micropore characteristics and inherent photothermal properties, for efficient water production in a relatively arid climate. NPCMAF-4-800 exhibited optimal water-sorption performance of 306 mg g-1 at 40% relative humidity (RH). An excellent sunlight-absorption rate was realized (97%) attributed to its high degree of graphitization. A proof-of-concept device was designed and investigated for the practical harvesting of water from the atmosphere using natural sunlight. NPCMAF-4-800 achieved an unprecedentedly high water production rate of 380 mg g-1 h-1 at 40% RH, and could produce 1.77 L kg-1 freshwater during daylight hours in an outdoor low-humidity climate of ∼25 °C and 40% RH. These findings may shed light on the potential of MOF-derived porous carbons in the AWH field, and inspire the future development of solar-driven water-generation systems.

Engineered Nanoporous Frameworks for Adsorption Cooling Applications

The energy demand for traditional vapor-compressed technology for space cooling continues to soar year after year due to global warming and the increasing human population's need to improve living and working conditions. Thus, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly technologies that use sustainable or waste energy resources. This review discusses the properties of various refrigerants used for adsorption cooling applications followed by a brief discussion on the thermodynamic cycle. Next, sorbents traditionally used for cooling are reviewed to emphasize the need for advanced capture materials with superior properties to improve refrigerant sorption. The remainder of the review focus on studies using engineered nanoporous frameworks (ENFs) with various refrigerants for adsorption cooling applications. The effects of the various factors that play a role in ENF-refrigerant pair selection, including pore structure/dimension/shape, morphology, open-metal sites, pore chemistry and possible presence of defects, are reviewed. Next, in-depth insights into the sorbent-refrigerant interaction, and pore filling mechanism gained through a combination of characterization techniques and computational modeling are discussed. Finally, we outline the challenges and opportunities related to using ENFs for adsorption cooling applications and provide our views on the future of this technology.

Chemistries and materials for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water-sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural-functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water-sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Mild-Temperature Supercritical Water Confined in Hydrophobic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Fluids under extreme confinement show characteristics significantly different from those of their bulk counterpart. This work focuses on water confined within the complex cavities of highly hydrophobic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at high pressures. A combination of high-pressure intrusion-extrusion experiments with molecular dynamic simulations and synchrotron data reveals that supercritical transition for MOF-confined water takes place at a much lower temperature than in bulk water, ∼250 K below the reference values. This large shifting of the critical temperature (Tc) is attributed to the very large density of confined water vapor in the peculiar geometry and chemistry of the cavities of Cu2tebpz (tebpz = 3,3',5,5'-tetraethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolate) hydrophobic MOF. This is the first time the shift of Tc is investigated for water confined within highly hydrophobic nanoporous materials, which explains why such a large reduction of the critical temperature was never reported before, neither experimentally nor computationally.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Monitoring water harvesting in metal-organic frameworks, one water molecule at a time

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained prominence as potential materials for atmospheric water harvesting, a vital solution for arid regions and areas experiencing severe water shortages. However, the molecular factors influencing the performance of MOFs in capturing water from the air remain elusive. Among all MOFs, Ni2X2BTDD (X = F, Cl, Br) stands out as a promising water harvester due to its ability to adsorb substantial amounts of water at low relative humidity (RH). Here, we use advanced molecular dynamics simulations carried out with the state-of-the-art MB-pol data-driven many-body potential to monitor water adsorption in the three Ni2X2BTDD variants as a function of RH. Our simulations reveal that the type of halide atom in the three Ni2X2BTDD frameworks significantly influences the corresponding molecular mechanisms of water adsorption: while water molecules form strong hydrogen bonds with the fluoride atoms in Ni2F2BTDD, they tend to form hydrogen bonds with the nitrogen atoms of the triazolate linkers in Ni2Cl2BTDD and Ni2Br2BTDD. Importantly, the large size of the bromide atoms reduces the void volume in the Ni2Br2BTDD pores, which enable water molecules to initiate an extended hydrogen-bond network at lower RH. These findings not only underscore the prospect for precisely tuning structural and chemical modifications of the frameworks to optimize their interaction with water, but also highlight the predictive power of simulations with the MB-pol data-driven many-body potential. By providing a realistic description of water under different thermodynamic conditions and environments, these simulations yield unique, molecular-level insights that can guide the design and optimization of energy-efficient water harvesting materials.

Highlights in Interface of Wastewater Treatment by Utilizing Metal Organic Frameworks: Purification and Adsorption Kinetics

Polluted water has become a concern for the scientific community as it causes many severe threats to living beings. Detection or removal of contaminants present in wastewater and attaining purity of water that can be used for various purposes are a primary responsibility. Different treatment methods have already been used for the purification of sewage. There is a need for low-cost, highly selective, and reusable materials that can efficiently remove pollutants or purify contaminated water. In this regard, MOFs have shown significant potential for applications such as supercapacitors, drug delivery, gas storage, pollutant adsorption, etc. The outstanding structural diversity, substantial surface areas, and adjustable pore sizes of MOFs make them superior candidates for wastewater treatment. This Review provides an overview of the interaction science and engineering (kinetic and thermodynamic aspects with interactions) underpinning MOFs for water purification. First, fundamental strategies for the synthesis methods of MOFs, different categories, and their applicability in wastewater treatment are summarized, followed by a detailed explanation of various interaction mechanisms. Finally, current challenges and future outlooks for research on MOF materials toward the adsorption of hazardous components are discussed. A new avenue for modifying their structural characteristics for the adsorption and separation of hazardous materials, which will undoubtedly direct future work, is also summarized.

Molecular driving forces for water adsorption in MOF-808: A comparative analysis with UiO-66

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique porous structures and versatile functionality, have emerged as promising materials for the adsorption, separation, and storage of diverse molecular species. In this study, we investigate water adsorption in MOF-808, a prototypical MOF that shares the same secondary building unit (SBU) as UiO-66, and elucidate how differences in topology and connectivity between the two MOFs influence the adsorption mechanism. To this end, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to calculate several thermodynamic and dynamical properties of water in MOF-808 as a function of relative humidity (RH), from the initial adsorption step to full pore filling. At low RH, the μ3-OH groups of the SBUs form hydrogen bonds with the initial water molecules entering the pores, which triggers the filling of these pores before the μ3-OH groups in other pores become engaged in hydrogen bonding with water molecules. Our analyses indicate that the pores of MOF-808 become filled by water sequentially as the RH increases. A similar mechanism has been reported for water adsorption in UiO-66. Despite this similarity, our study highlights distinct thermodynamic properties and framework characteristics that influence the adsorption process differently in MOF-808 and UiO-66.

Tunable Low-Pressure Water Adsorption in Stable Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting Water-Based Ultralow-Temperature-Driven Refrigeration

The green water-based adsorption refrigeration is considered as a promising strategy to realize near-zero-carbon cooling applications. Although many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as water adsorbents, their cooling performance are commonly limited by the insufficient water uptakes below P/P0 = 0.2. Herein, the development of multivariate MOFs (MTV-MOFs) is reported to highly modulate and boost the low-pressure water uptake for improving coefficient of performance (COP) for refrigeration. Through ligand exchange in the pristine MIL-125-NH2 , a series of MTV-MOFs with bare nitrogen sites are designed and synthesized. The resulting MIL-125-NH2 /MD-5% exhibits the significantly improved water uptake of 0.39 g g-1 at 298 K and P/P0 = 0.2, which is three times higher than MIL-125-NH2 (0.12 g g-1 ) and comparable to some benchmark materials including KMF-1 (0.4 g g-1 ) and MIP-200 (0.36 g g-1 ). Combined with its low-temperature regeneration, fast sorption kinetics and high stability, MIL-125-NH2 /MD-5% achieves one of the highest COP values (0.8) and working capacities (0.24 g g-1 ) for refrig-2 under an ultralow-driven temperature of 65 °C, which are higher than some best-performing MOFs such as MIP-200 (0.74 and 0.11 g g-1 ) and KMF-2 (0.62 and 0.16 g g-1 ), making it among the best adsorbents for efficient ultralow-temperature-driven refrigeration.

Extreme Water Uptake of Hygroscopic Hydrogels through Maximized Swelling-Induced Salt Loading

Hygroscopic hydrogels are emerging as scalable and low-cost sorbents for atmospheric water harvesting, dehumidification, passive cooling, and thermal energy storage. However, devices using these materials still exhibit insufficient performance, partly due to the limited water vapor uptake of the hydrogels. Here, the swelling dynamics of hydrogels in aqueous lithiumchloride solutions, the implications on hydrogel salt loading, and the resulting vapor uptake of the synthesized hydrogel-salt composites are characterized. By tuning the salt concentration of the swelling solutions and the cross-linking properties of the gels, hygroscopic hydrogels with extremely high salt loadings are synthesized, which enable unprecedented water uptakes of 1.79 and 3.86 gg-1 at relative humidity (RH) of 30% and 70%, respectively. At 30% RH, this exceeds previously reported water uptakes of metal-organic frameworks by over 100% and of hydrogels by 15%, bringing the uptake within 93% of the fundamental limit of hygroscopic salts while avoiding leakage problems common in salt solutions. By modeling the salt-vapor equilibria, the maximum leakage-free RH is elucidated as a function of hydrogel uptake and swelling ratio. These insights guide the design of hydrogels with exceptional hygroscopicity that enable sorption-based devices to tackle water scarcity and the global energy crisis.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Harvesting and Concurrent Carbon Capture: A Review for Hygroscopic Materials

As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure-performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight into creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes simultaneously addressing water shortages and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. Concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for their excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro- and mesoporous materials. Herein, the water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stability, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water-harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge.

Harvesting Energy from Atmospheric Water: Grand Challenges in Continuous Electricity Generation

Atmospheric water is ubiquitous on earth and extensively participates in the natural water cycle through evaporation and condensation. This process involves tremendous energy exchange with the environment, but very little of the energy has so far been harnessed. The recently emerged hydrovoltaic technology, especially moisture-induced electricity, shows great potential in harvesting energy from atmospheric water and gives birth to moisture energy harvesting devices. The device performance, especially the long-term operational capacity, has been significantly enhanced over the past few years. Further development; however, requires in-depth understanding of mechanisms, innovative materials, and ingenious system designs. In this review, beginning with describing the basic properties of water, the key aspects of the water-hygroscopic material interactions and mechanisms of power generation are discussed. The current material systems and advances in promising material development are then summarized. Aiming at the chief bottlenecks of limited operational time, advanced system designs that are helpful to improve device performance are listed. Especially, the synergistic effect of moisture adsorption and water evaporation on material and system levels to accomplish sustained electricity generation is discussed. Last, the remaining challenges are analyzed and future directions for developing this promising technology are suggested.

Confined Water Cluster Formation in Water Harvesting by Metal-Organic Frameworks: CAU-10-H versus CAU-10-CH3

Several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) excel in harvesting water from the air or as heat pumps as they show a steep increase in water uptake at 10-30 % relative humidity (RH%). A precise understanding of which structural characteristics govern such behavior is lacking. Herein, CAU-10-H and CAU-10-CH3 are studied with H, CH3 corresponding to the functions grafted to the organic linker. CAU-10-H shows a steep water uptake ≈18 RH% of interest for water harvesting, yet the subtle replacement of H by CH3 in the organic linker drastically changes the water adsorption behavior to less steep water uptake at much higher humidity values. The materials' structural deformation and water ordering during adsorption with in situ sum-frequency generation, in situ X-ray diffraction, and molecular simulations are unraveled. In CAU-10-H, an energetically favorable water cluster is formed in the hydrophobic pore, tethered via H-bonds to the framework μOH groups, while for CAU-10-CH3, such a favorable cluster cannot form. By relating the findings to the features of water adsorption isotherms of a series of MOFs, it is concluded that favorable water adsorption occurs when sites of intermediate hydrophilicity are present in a hydrophobic structure, and the formation of energetically favorable water clusters is possible.

Boosting the Electrocatalytic Water Splitting Performance Using Hydrophilic Metal-Organic Framework

In this study, we employed a rapid and efficient microwave method to synthesize Metal-Organic Framework (MOF-303), which was subsequently embedded onto Palladium/Carbon (Pd/C) electrodes. The resulting hybrid material, Pd/C@MOF-303, was thoroughly characterized, and its performance in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) was systematically investigated. The Pd/C@MOF-303 composite exhibited remarkable improvements in HER performance compared to the unmodified Pd/C electrode. At a benchmark current density of 10 mA cm-2 , the overpotentials for Pd/C and Pd/C@MOF-303 were measured at 185 mV and 175 mV, respectively. This reduction in overpotential highlights the superior catalytic activity of the Pd/C@MOF-303 hybrid material in facilitating the HER. Furthermore, the Pd/C@MOF-303 electrode demonstrated enhanced HER activity, increased mass activity, and excellent charge transfer rates compared to its unmodified counterpart, Pd/C. The findings underscore the significance of the hydrophilic MOF-303 in tailoring the surface characteristics of electrocatalysts, thereby offering insights into the design principles for advanced materials with superior performance in electrochemical applications.

Phosphorus removal from water by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents: A review for structure, mechanism, and current progress

Efficacious phosphate removal is essential for mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems and complying with increasingly stringent phosphate emission regulations. Chemical adsorption, characterized by simplicity, prominent treatment efficiency, and convenient recovery, is extensively employed for profound phosphorus removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal/carbon composites, surpassing the limitations of separate components, exhibit synergistic effects, rendering them tremendously promising for environmental remediation. This comprehensive review systematically summarizes MOFs-based materials' properties and their structure-property relationships tailored for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing specificity towards phosphate. Furthermore, it elucidates the primary mechanisms influencing phosphate adsorption by MOFs-based composites. Additionally, the review introduces strategies for designing and synthesizing efficacious phosphorus capture and regeneration materials. Lastly, it discusses and illuminates future research challenges and prospects in this field. This summary provides novel insights for future research on superlative MOFs-based adsorbents for phosphate removal.

Spontaneous Dipole Reorientation in Confined Water and Its Effect on Wetting/Dewetting of Hydrophobic Nanopores

The properties of nanoconfined fluids are important for a broad range of natural and engineering systems. In particular, wetting/dewetting of hydrophobic nanoporous materials is crucial due to their broad applicability for molecular separation and liquid purification; energy storage, conversion, recuperation, and dissipation; for catalysis, chromatography, and so on. In this work, a rapid, orchestrated, and spontaneous dipole reorientation was observed in hydrophobic nanotubes of various pore sizes d (7.9-16.5 Å) via simulations. This phenomenon leads to the fragmentation of water clusters in the narrow nanopores (d = 7.9, 10 Å) and strongly affects dewetting through cluster repulsion. The cavitation in these pores has an electrostatic origin. The dependence of hydrogen-bonded network properties on the tube aperture is obtained and is used to explain wetting (intrusion)-dewetting (extrusion) hysteresis. Computer simulations and experimental data demonstrate that d equals ca. 12.5 Å is a threshold between a nonhysteretic (spring) behavior, where intrusion-extrusion is reversible, and a hysteretic one (shock absorber), where hysteresis is prominent. This work suggests that water clustering and the electrostatic nature of cavitation are important factors that can be effectively exploited for controlling the wetting/dewetting of nanoporous materials.

Superfast adsorption of small and uncharged urea from water using post-sonicated iron-based metal-organic framework

Urea is widely used in fertilizer production for agricultural purposes which risks runoff into soil and water sources. An excess of urea can result in algal or toxic blooms which can poison wildlife or even humans by accumulation in food sources. The removal of urea from water is challenging due to the small size (0.254 nm) and uncharged surface of urea. Intensive research has been conducted on a variety of methods to remove environmental concentrations of urea using adsorbents, but most of them lack effective removal, require long (>2 h) process time, and lack re-generability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the new generation of adsorbents with excellent structural and functional group tunability. In this study, we synthesized MIL-100 (Fe), an iron-based MOF, as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of uncharged urea from water. The urea adsorption capacity of MIL-100 (Fe) was tested under varying experimental conditions such as pH (2-10), temperature (25-65 °C), MOF concentration (25-400 ppm), and urea concentration (25-1000 ppm). The results showed the superfast adsorption (more than 85% removal within 2 min) of neutrally charged urea molecules on MIL-100 (Fe). The MOF was able to reach a maximum adsorption efficiency of around 85% with a maximum uptake capacity of 3321 mg/g. The MIL-100 (Fe) showed acceptable re-generability by retaining up to 90% removal efficiency after four regeneration cycles. The urea adsorption followed pseudo 2nd-order adsorption kinetics and dipole-dipole interactions and π-NH bonding were the primary adsorption mechanism.

In situ monitoring of mechanochemical MOF formation by NMR relaxation time correlation

In this paper, we present a new approach to monitoring mechanochemical transformations, based on a magnetic resonance (MR) method in which relaxation time correlation maps are used to track the formation of the popular metal-organic framework (MOF) materials Zn-MOF-74 and ZIF-8. The two-dimensional (2D) relaxation correlation measurement employed yields a spectrum which visually and analytically identifies different 1H environments in the sample of interest. The measurement is well-suited to analyzing solid mixtures, and liquids, in complex systems. Application in this work to monitoring MOF formation shows changes in signal amplitudes, and their MR lifetime coordinates, within the 2D plots as the reaction progresses, confirming reaction completion. This new measurement provides a simple way to analyse solid-state reactions without dissolution, and there is a logical pathway to benchtop measurement with a new generation of permanent magnet-based MR instruments. The methodology described permits measurement in an MR compatible milling container, which may be directly transferred from the shaker assembly to the MR magnet for in situ measurement of the entire reaction mixture.

Construction of imidazole@defective hierarchical porous UiO-66 and fibrous composites for rapid and nonbuffered catalytic hydrolysis of organophosphorus nerve agents

Hydrolytic destruction of toxic organophosphorus nerve agents by metal-organic framework (MOF) catalysts is commonly reliant on bulk water and volatile liquid base, preventing real-world implementation. Poor accessibility to MOF-based active sites in heterogeneous catalysis is also a crucial factor since reactants diffusion is limited by inherently small micropores. To overcome these practical limitations, a ligand-selective pyrolysis strategy was used to construct unsaturated Zr defects and additional mesopores in UiO-66(Zr). Owing to synergistic effect of Zr defects and hierarchical pores, hydrolysis rate constant (k) of nerve agent simulant DMNP (dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate) on optimal DHP-UiO-30% (defective hierarchical porous UiO-66) is 3.2 times higher than counterpart UiO-30% in N-ethylmorpholine buffer. Encapsulating imidazole (Im) into DHP-UiO-30% affords Im@DHP-UiO, mimicking phosphotriesterase. Im-72@DHP-UiO exhibits rapid DMNP detoxification with 99% conversion in 12 min and initial half-life (t1/2) of 1.8 min in nonbuffered water. As the first example of 'three-in-one' detoxifier, Im@DHP-UiO is further integrated onto nonwoven fabric to construct Im@DHP/Fiber, achieving solid-phase detoxification at ambient humidity with t1/2 of 19.6 min and final conversion of 91%. This is comparable to many powdered catalysts in aqueous solution buffered by volatile bases. This unified strategy is critical and viable to efficiently hydrolyze nerve agents in practical settings.

Quantitative Determination of Water in Organic Liquids by Ambient Mass Spectrometry

This study uses a rapid tandem mass-spectrometry method to determine water content in complex organic solutions. Emphasis is placed on trace-water analysis by a fast and accurate alternative to the Karl-Fischer method. In this new method, water is captured by a charge-labeled molecular probe. Water binds strongly with high specificity to the strongly electrophilic aldehyde site in a charge-labelled molecule (N-methylpyridinium); competitive binding by other analytes is effectively discriminated against in the mass-measurement step. Quantitative determinations are made over a wide concentration range, 0.001 % (10 ppm) to 99 %, with better than 10 % relative standard deviation, along with short (1 min) analysis times using small sample volumes (several μL). Applications include water measurement in simple organic solvents, for example, deuterated solvents, as well as in complex mixtures, for example, organic reaction mixtures. Additionally, this method allows for water monitoring in levitated droplets. Mechanistic investigations into the impact of water on important chemical processes in organic synthesis and environmental science are reported.

Modified hydrophobic and oleophilic polyurethane sponge for oil absorption with MIL-53

A hydrophobic composite sponge (HPCS) is developed for the first time using the dip coating and drying method in an effort to remove organic contaminants like toluene and various oils from water. We employed a polyurethane (PU) sponge, which is reasonably priced, easily accessible, high mechanical strength and a suitable porous substrate on which the hydrophobic composite of MIL-53(Al) along with PDMS was anchored. A crystalline metal organic framework (MOF), MIL-53(Al), with adjustable porosity, functionality, and hydrophobicity is used for oil absorption. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is utilized to increase the hydrophobicity of MIL-53(Al). The MIL-53(Al)@PDMS composite was used to the produce a sponge having high hydrophobicity and oleophilicity. In contrast to PU sponge, which has a low water contact angle (79.64°), the hydrophobic composite sponge showed a wide range of oil absorption capacity (12-50.5 g/g), a very low amount of water absorption (0.84 g/g), and water contact angle of 128.13°. This hydrophobic composite performed phenomenally by separating out various oils and solvents from water even in varying ionic strengths. Moreover, the recyclability of the formed composite was also performed resulting into 6-20 cycles for different oils and solvents. The synthesized hydrophobic composite sponge was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TEM, surface area analysis, FESEM, XPS, TG analysis and contact angle measurement. Furthermore, the materials used in the synthesis of composite are non-toxic and do not harm the environment, resulting in no greenhouse gas emissions making our composite environmentally friendly.

Flexibility in zeolites: origin, limits, and evaluation

Numerous pieces of evidence in the literature suggest that zeolitic materials exhibit significant intrinsic flexibility as a consequence of the spring-like behavior of Si-O and Al-O bonds and the distortion ability of Si-O-Si and Al-O-Si angles. Understanding the origin of flexibility and how it may be tuned to afford high adsorption selectivity in zeolites is a big challenge. Zeolite flexibility may be triggered by changes in temperature, pressure, or chemical composition of the framework and extra-framework compounds, as well as by the presence of guest molecules. Therefore, zeolite flexibility can be classified into three categories: (i) temperature and pressure-induced flexibility; (ii) guest-induced flexibility; and (iii) compositionally-induced flexibility. An outlook on zeolite flexibility and the challenges met during the precise experimental evaluations of zeolites will be discussed. Overcoming these challenges will provide an important tool for designing novel selective adsorbents.

Fabrication of robust and cost-efficient Hoffmann-type MOF sensors for room temperature ammonia detection

The development of fast-response sensors for detecting NH3 at room temperature remains a formidable challenge. Here, to address this challenge, two highly robust Hoffmann-type metal-organic frameworks are rationally applied as the NH3 sensing materials which possess ultra-high static adsorption capacity for NH3, only lower than the current benchmark material. The adsorption mechanism is in-depth unveiled by dynamic adsorption and simulation studies. The assembled interdigital electrode device exhibits low detection limit (25 ppb) and short response time (5 s) at room temperature, which set a record among all electrical signal sensors. Moreover, the sensor exhibits excellent selectivity towards NH3 in the presence of 13 other potential interfering gases. Prominently, the sensor can stably output signals for more than two months at room temperature and can be recovered by simply purging nitrogen at room temperature without heating. This study opens up a way for reasonably designing gas sensing materials for toxic gases.

Simulation insights into the lipase adsorption on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently emerged as immobilization matrices for biomolecules, most notably enzymes. Understanding the key factors that dominate the enzyme's catalytic activity on/in ZIFs is crucial for the development of new immobilization matrices. In this work, a combination of the parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulation and all-atom molecular dynamics simulation is performed to study the orientation and conformation of the Candida rugose lipase (CRL) adsorbed on oppositely charged and neutral ZIF-8 (i.e., ZIF-8-COOH, ZIF-8-NH2, and ZIF-8-neutral) surfaces. The results show that CRL could adsorb on all ZIF-8 surfaces, with an ordered orientation obtained on charged ZIF-8 surfaces. ZIF-8-NH2 is a good candidate for CRL immobilization since it can maximize the catalytic activity of CRL. The native conformation of CRL is well preserved on all three surfaces due to the partially water-containing surface of ZIF-8. The results could provide theoretical support for the application of porous materials in enzyme immobilization.

Synthesis and analytical characterization of Ca-BTC metal organic framework

Metal Organic framework (MOF) has been a class of great interest during the past few years owing to its decidedly applicative, easily synthesized and improved characteristics. Ca-BTC MOF is synthesized by Hydrothermal technique and reported for the first time. Its structural morphology was analyzed using XRD, SEM, and EDS, showing the tetragonal crystal structure having grain size of 24.92 nm and purity of sample respectively. FTIR, Raman Spectroscopy ensures the metal organic framework between Calcium and the tri-carboxylic group. Photoluminescence measures the energy gap of 3.792 eV, showing approximately the semiconducting behavior of synthesized material. Zeta potential having value of -13.5 mV confirms the instability having good microbial activity and conductivity i.e 0.290 mS/cm which reveals important insights into its electrical properties.

Significance of MOF adsorbents in uranium remediation from water

Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.

Unravelling the Water Adsorption Mechanism in Hierarchical MOFs: Insights from In Situ Positron Annihilation Lifetime Studies

Atmospheric water harvesting with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a new technology providing a clean, long-term water supply in arid areas. In-situ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is proposed as a valid methodology for the mechanistic understanding of water sorption in MOFs and the selection of prospective candidates for desired applications. DUT-67-Zr and DUT-67-Hf frameworks are used as model systems for method validation because of their hierarchical pore structure, high adsorption capacity, and chemical stability. Both frameworks are characterized using complementary techniques, such as nitrogen (77 K) and water vapor (298 K) physisorption, SEM, and PXRD. DUT-67-Zr and DUT-67-Hf are investigated by PALS upon exposure to humidity for the first time, demonstrating the stepwise pore filling mechanism by water molecules for both MOFs. In addition to exploring the potential of PALS as a tool for probing MOFs during in situ water loading, this work offers perspectives on the design and use of MOFs for water harvesting.

Consecutive Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Isomerization of Novel Octamolybdate Anions within a Microporous Hybrid Framework with Robust Water Sorption Properties

The 3D hybrid framework [{Cu(cyclam)}3 (κ-Mo8 O27 )] ⋅ 14H2 O (1) (cyclam=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) undergoes sequential single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations upon heating to afford two different anhydrous phases (2 a and 3 a). These transitions modify the framework dimensionality and enable the isomerization of κ-octamolybdate (κ-Mo8 ) anions into λ (2 a) and μ (3 a) forms through metal migration. Hydration of 3 a involves condensation of one water molecule to the cluster to afford the γ-Mo8 isomer in 4, which dehydrates back into 3 a through the 6 a intermediate. In contrast, 2 a reversibly hydrates to form 5, exhibiting the same Mo8 cluster as that of 1. It is remarkable that three of the Mo8 clusters (κ, λ and μ) are new and that up to three different microporous phases can be isolated from 1 (2 a, 3 a, and 6 a). Water vapor sorption analyses show high recyclability and the highest uptake values for POM-based systems. The isotherms display an abrupt step at low humidity level desirable for humidity control devices or water harvesting in drylands.

Connectivity Analysis of Adsorption Sites in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Facilitated Water Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently drawn considerable attention as promising adsorbents to harvest atmospheric water. To achieve an efficient harvesting process, seeking MOFs that demonstrate sharp condensation behavior is the key. Given that the clustering of water molecules in MOFs should be driven by not only MOF-water interactions but also water-water interactions, the spatial arrangement of water adsorption sites in a MOF is therefore crucial. Specifically, this study demonstrates the critical role of continuous adsorption channels (CACs) in MOFs. Such CACs will enable water molecules to stay in proximity and in a continuous manner, thus promoting the formation of hydrogen bonds and, consequently, the clustering of water molecules. We have developed an automatic algorithm to detect CACs based on the energy grid of host-guest interactions and applied the algorithm to more than 2000 diverse structures. The results show that more than 80% of the studied MOFs displaying water condensation at 298 K and 20% relative humidity predicted by Monte Carlo simulations indeed have CACs. The developments herein are anticipated to largely facilitate the future discovery of optimal adsorbents for water harvesting or water-adsorption-related applications in general. A Python-based code for detecting CACs in porous materials is also provided along with this article to employ this approach.

Effect of Water and Carbon Dioxide on the Performance of Basolite Metal-Organic Frameworks for Methane Adsorption

MOFs are potential adsorbents for methane separation from nitrogen, including recovery in diluted streams. However, water and carbon dioxide can seriously affect the adsorption performance. Three commercial MOFs, basolite C300, F300, and A100, were studied under similar conditions to fugitive methane streams, such as water (75 and 100% relative humidity) and carbon dioxide (0.33%) presence in a fixed bed. The presence of available open metal sites of copper (Cu2+) and aluminum (Al3+) in the case of basolite C300 and A100, respectively, constitutes a clear drawback under humid conditions, since water adsorbs on them, leading to significant methane capacity losses. Surprisingly, basolite F300 is the most resistant material due to its amorphous structure, which hinders water access. The combination of carbon dioxide and water creates a synergy that seriously affects basolite A100, closely related to its breathing effect, but does not constitute an important issue for basolite C300 and F300.

Sorption-Based Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Materials, Components, Systems, and Applications

Freshwater scarcity is a global challenge posing threats to the lives and daily activities of humankind such that two-thirds of the global population currently experience water shortages. Atmospheric water, irrespective of geographical location, is considered as an alternative water source. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has recently emerged as an efficient strategy for decentralized water production. SAWH thus opens up a self-sustaining source of freshwater that can potentially support the global population for various applications. In this review, the state-of-the-art of SAWH, considering its operation principle, thermodynamic analysis, energy assessment, materials, components, different designs, productivity improvement, scale-up, and application for drinking water, is first extensively explored. Thereafter, the practical integration and potential application of SAWH, beyond drinking water, for wide range of utilities in agriculture, fuel/electricity production, thermal management in building services, electronic devices, and textile are comprehensively discussed. The various strategies to reduce human reliance on natural water resources by integrating SAWH into existing technologies, particularly in underdeveloped countries, in order to satisfy the interconnected needs for food, energy, and water are also examined. This study further highlights the urgent need and future research directions to intensify the design and development of hybrid-SAWH systems for sustainability and diverse applications.

Recent advances in fluorescence-based chemosensing of organoarsenic feed additives using luminescence MOFs, COFs, HOFs, and QDs

Organoarsenics are low-toxicity compounds that are used widely as feed additives to promote livestock growth, enhance meat pigmentation, and fight against intestinal parasites. The organoarsenic compounds are commonly found in poultry waste and the degradation of organoarsenic produces the toxic carcinogen inorganic arsenic such as As(V) and As(III), which results in severe arsenic pollution of soil and groundwater. As a consequence, there exists a high necessity to develop suitable sensing methods for the trace detection and quantification of organoarsenic feed additives in wastewater. Among various detection methods, in particular, fluorescence-based sensing has become a popular and efficient method used extensively for sensing water contaminants and environmental contaminants. In the recent past, a wide variety of fluorescence chemosensors have been designed and employed for the efficient sensing and quantification of the concentration of organoarsenic feed additives in different environmental samples. This review article systematically highlights various fluorescence chemosensors reported to date for fluorescence-based sensing of organoarsenic feed additives. The fluorescence sensors discussed in this review are classified and grouped according to their structures and functions, and in each section, we provide a detailed report on the structure, photophysics, and fluorescence sensing properties of different chemosensors. Lastly, the future perspectives on the design and development of practically useful sensor systems for selective and discriminative sensing of organoarsenic compounds have been stated.

A portable test strip fabricated of luminescent lanthanide-functionalized metal-organic frameworks for rapid and visual detection of tetracycline antibiotics

Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of infections, but their overuse has a negative impact on human health and ecosystems. Thus, the development of a facile and on-site visualization method for TC detection is necessary. Here, we propose the potential of using lanthanide-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) composites (Ag+/Tb3+@UiO-66-(COOH)2, ATUC) as a probe for the rapid detection of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DOX) residues, in which UiO-66-(COOH)2 (UC) could be utilized to provide an interaction microenvironment, Tb3+ as recognition units and Ag+ as a fluorescence enhancer. Upon exposure to TCs, significant luminescence quenching of ATUC excited at 255 nm was observed due to the inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET), and the established strategy has a detection limit (LOD) of 11.0, 20.1, 9.1, and 22.5 nM for TC, CTC, OTC, and DOX, respectively. More importantly, given its portability and conspicuous luminescence color gradation variation, a portable test strip based on ATUC was manufactured and the results could be distinguished immediately by the naked eye and smartphone analysis, allowing for on-site rapid quantitative assay of TCs, not only in the laboratory but also in a point-of-care setting.

Improvement of water adsorption performance of UiO-66 by post-synthetic modification

Post-synthetic modification can be used for structural replacement or functional modification of materials after they have been formed or assembled. It can effectively combine various modification methods for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as defect control, replacement of metal sites, or functionalization of ligands. In this work, organic ligands that incorporate N-functionalities or amino groups were introduced into defective UiO-66 through post-synthetic ligand exchange (PSE) to improve its water adsorption performance. Parameters such as water adsorption capacity, half adsorption value (α), and Henry constant KH were used to characterize the water adsorption performance. After PSE, new ligands in different molar ratios entered the skeleton of UiO-66. The N sites or amino groups on the ligands provided new sites for the adsorption of water molecules. The water adsorption capacity and hydrophilicity of all samples were significantly superior to those of LD-UiO-66, which had almost no defects. H-UiO-66-PyDC samples exhibited the highest ligand replacement ratio and a significant enhancement of water adsorption performance. Compared to the unchanged H-UiO-66, the water uptake of H-UiO-66-PyDC increased from 0.08 g g-1 to 0.23 g g-1 at P/P0 = 0.30 and α decreased from 0.36 to 0.28. After 20 water adsorption/desorption tests, the water uptake of all samples did not decrease, showing excellent cycling stability. These results suggest that the combination of defect modulation and PSE is a potential tool to make UiO-66 more appropriate for applications based on reversible adsorption.

Robust Proton Conduction against Mechanical Stress in Flexible Free-Standing Membrane Composed of Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

Introduction of mechanical flexibility into proton-conducting coordination polymers (CPs) is in high demand for future protonic applications such as fuel cells and hydrogen sensors. Although such mechanical properties have been primarily investigated in one-dimensional (1D) CPs, in this study, we successfully fabricated highly flexible free-standing CP membranes with a high surface-to-volume ratio, which is beneficial for enhanced performance in the aforementioned applications. We fabricated a layered CP, Cu2 (NiTCPP) (H4 (H2 TCPP); 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin), in which a two-dimensional (2D) square grid sheet composed of tetradentate nickel porphyrins and paddlewheel-type copper dimers was connected to each other by weak van der Waals forces. The mechanical flexibility was evaluated by bending and tensile tests. The flexural and Young's moduli of the membrane were significantly higher than those of conventional Nafion membranes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis revealed that the in-plane proton conductivity of the membrane was maintained even under applied bending stress. Because the X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the proton-conducting pathway through the hydrogen bonding network remains intact during the bending operation, our present study provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of new and advanced 2D CPs without using substrates or additional polymers for protonic devices.

Synthesis of Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Derived Carbon Nanomaterials and Their Water Adsorption Isotherm

The characteristics of water vapor adsorption depend on the structure, porosity, and functional groups of the material. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon (MDC) is a novel material that exhibits a high specific area and tunable pore sizes by exploiting the stable structure and porosity of pure MOF materials. Herein, two types of aluminum-based MOFs were used as precursors to synthesize hydrophobic microporous C-MDC and micro-mesoporous A-MDC via carbonization and activation depending on the type of ligands in the precursors. C-MDC and A-MDC have different pore characteristics and exhibit distinct water adsorption properties. C-MDC with hydrophobic properties and micropores exhibited negligible water adsorption (108.54 mgg-1) at relatively low pressures (P/P0~0.3) but showed a rapid increase in water adsorption ability (475.7 mgg-1) at relative pressures of about 0.6. A comparison with the isotherm model indicated that the results were consistent with the theories, which include site filling at low relative pressure and pore filling at high relative pressure. In particular, the Do-Do model specialized for type 5 showed excellent agreement.

Surface Hydrophobicity and Guest Permeability in Polydimethylsiloxane-Coated MIL-53 as Studied by Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Experimental characterization of the hydrophobic porous materials at the atomic and molecular levels is of great significance, but exploring their hydrophobicity characteristics and interactions with guest molecules with distinct polarity is still challenging. In this work, solid-state NMR is employed to characterize the surface hydrophobicity and explore the guest solvent permeability in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated MIL-53. It was found that the PDMS-coated MIL-53 was hydrophobic to water and infiltrated to methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene solvents. In addition, two types of guest solvents (methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene), inside the pore and outside the pore of PDMS-coated MIL-53, were clearly identified using two-dimensional 1H-1H homo-nuclear correlation NMR experiments. Moreover, the membrane thickness of the PDMS-coated MIL-53 could be determined from the analysis of the 1H-1H spin diffusion buildup curves. Furthermore, the permeability of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene at different PDMS coating levels was extracted from 1H MAS NMR. The increase of the hydrophobic PDMS layer resulted in a decrease of the penetration of aromatic guests to the internal pore of MIL-53. This work provides deep insights into the understanding of guest solvent permeability of hydrophobic layer-coated MOFs in the application fields of catalysis and separation.

Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Removal of Chemical Warfare Agents: Insights into Hydrolysis and Oxidation Reaction Mechanisms

The destruction of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is a crucial area of research due to the ongoing evolution of toxic chemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline solids, have emerged as promising materials for this purpose. Their remarkable porosity and large surface areas enable superior adsorption, reactivity, and catalytic abilities, making them ideal for capturing and decomposing target species. Moreover, the tunable networks of MOFs allow customization of their chemical functionalities, making them practicable in personal protective equipment and adjustable to dynamic environments. This review paper focuses on experimental and computational studies investigating the removal of CWAs by MOFs, specifically emphasizing the removal of nerve agents (GB, GD, and VX) via hydrolysis and sulfur mustard (HD) via selective photooxidation. Among the different MOFs, zirconium-based MOFs exhibit extraordinary structural stability and reusability, rendering them the most promising materials for the hydrolytic and photooxidative degradation of CWAs. Accordingly, this work primarily concentrates on exploring the intrinsic catalytic reaction mechanisms in Zr-MOFs through first-principles approximations, as well as the design of efficient degradation strategies in the aqueous and solid phases through the establishment of Zr-MOF structure-property relationships. Recent progress in the tuning and functionalization of MOFs is also examined, aiming to enhance practical CWA removal under realistic battlefield conditions. By providing a comprehensive overview of experimental findings and computational insights, this review paper contributes to the advancement of MOF-based strategies for the destruction of CWAs and highlights the potential of these materials to address the challenges associated with chemical warfare.

Membrane-based purification and recovery of phosphate and antibiotics by two-dimensional zeolitic nanoflakes

The pervasive presence of persistent contaminants in water resources, including phosphate and antibiotics, has attracted significant attention due to their potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Adsorption membranes packed with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proposed as a potential solution to this challenge due to their high surface area to volume ratio, and the tailored functionality they can provide for selective purification. However, devising a straightforward method to enhance the stability of MOF membranes on polymer supports and manipulate their surface morphology remains challenging. In this study, we present a facile solution immersion technique to fabricate a ZIF-L adsorption membrane on commercial supports by leveraging the self-polymerization characteristics of dopamine. The simple coating methodology provides a polydopamine-lined interface that regulates the ZIF-L heteroepitaxial growth, along with tailored nanoflake morphology. Compared with crystals prepared in bulk solution, the sorbents grown on the membrane exhibit a higher saturation capacity of 248 mg g^-1 of phosphate (∼80 mg phosphorus per g sorbent) and 196 mg g^-1 for tetracycline in static adsorption experiments at 30 °C. Additionally, the membranes are capable of selectively removing 99.5% of the phosphate in simulant solutions comprising competitive background ions in various concentrations, and efficiently removing tetracycline. The result from the static adsorption experiments directly translates to a flow-through process, showcasing the utility of a composite membrane with a 3 μm thick active layer in practical adsorption applications. The facile solution immersion fabrication protocol introduced in this work may offer a more efficient paradigm to harness the potential of MOF composite membranes in selective adsorption and resource recovery applications.

Metaheuristic Framework for Material Screening and Operating Optimization of Adsorption-Based Heat Pumps

The current methods applied to material screening for adsorption-based heat pumps are based on a fixed set of temperatures or their independent variation, providing a limited, insufficient, and unpractical evaluation of different adsorbents. This work proposes a novel strategy for the simultaneous optimization and material screening in the design of adsorption heat pumps by implementing a meta-heuristic approach, particle swarm optimization (PSO). The proposed framework can effectively evaluate variable and broad operation temperature intervals to search for viable zones of operation for multiple adsorbents at once. The criteria for selecting the adequate material were the maximum performance and the minimum heat supply cost, which were considered the objective functions of the PSO algorithm. First, the performance was assessed individually, followed by a single-objective approximation of the multi-objective problem. Next, a multi-objective approach was also adopted. With the results generated during the optimization, it was possible to find which adsorbents and temperature sets were the most suitable according to the main objective of the operation. The Fisher-Snedecor test was applied to expand the results obtained during PSO application and a feasible operating region built around the optima, enabling the arrangement of close-to-optima data into practical design and control tools. This approach allowed for a fast and intuitive evaluation of multiple design and operation variables.

Sonocrystallization of a novel ZIF/zeolite composite adsorbent with high chemical stability for removal of the pharmaceutical pollutant azithromycin from contaminated water

Water pollution management, reduction, and elimination are critical challenges of the current era that threaten millions of lives. By spreading the coronavirus in December 2019, the use of antibiotics, such as azithromycin increased. This drug was not metabolized, and entered the surface waters. ZIF-8/Zeolit composite was made by the sonochemical method. Furthermore, the effect of pH, the regeneration of adsorbents, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were attended. The adsorption capacity of zeolite, ZIF-8, and the composite ZIF-8/Zeolite were 22.37, 235.3, and 131 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbent reaches the equilibrium in 60 min, and at pH = 8. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic associated with increased entropy. The results of the experiment were analyzed using Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second order kinetic models with a R2 of 0.99, and successfully removing the composite by 85% in 10 cycles. It indicated that the maximum amount of drug could be removed with a small amount of composite.

Photoelectrochemical Selective Oxidation of Glycerol to Glyceraldehyde with Bi-Based Metal-Organic-Framework-Decorated WO3 Photoanode

The conversion of glycerol to high-value-added products via photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation has emerged as a promising approach for utilizing a sustainable and clean energy source with environmental and economic benefits. Moreover, the energy requirement for glycerol to produce hydrogen is lower than that for pure water splitting. In this study, we propose the use of WO₃ nanostructures decorated with Bi-based metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) as the photoanode for glycerol oxidation with simultaneous hydrogen production. The WO₃-based electrodes selectively converted glycerol to glyceraldehyde, a high-value-added product, with remarkable selectivity. The Bi-MOF-decorated WO₃ nanorods enhanced the surface charge transfer and adsorption properties, thereby improving the photocurrent density and production rate (1.53 mA/cm² and 257 mmol/m²·h at 0.8 V_RHE). The photocurrent was maintained for 10 h, ensuring stable glycerol conversion. Furthermore, at 1.2 V_RHE, the average production rate of glyceraldehyde reached 420 mmol/m²·h, with a selectivity of 93.6% between beneficial oxidized products over the photoelectrode. This study provides a practical approach for the conversion of glycerol to glyceraldehyde via the selective oxidation of WO₃ nanostructures and demonstrates the potential of Bi-MOFs as a promising cocatalyst for PEC biomass valorization.

Fast Blood Oxygenation through Hemocompatible Asymmetric Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity Membranes

Membrane technology has attracted considerable attention for chemical and medical applications, among others. Artificial organs play important roles in medical science. A membrane oxygenator, also known as artificial lung, can replenish O₂ and remove CO₂ of blood to maintain the metabolism of patients with cardiopulmonary failure. However, the membrane, a key component, is subjected to inferior gas transport property, leakage propensity, and insufficient hemocompatibility. In this study, we report efficient blood oxygenation by using an asymmetric nanoporous membrane that is fabricated using the classic nonsolvent-induced phase separation method for polymer of intrinsic microporosity-1. The intrinsic superhydrophobic nanopores and asymmetric configuration endow the membrane with water impermeability and gas ultrapermeability, up to 3,500 and 1,100 gas permeation units for CO₂ and O₂, respectively. Moreover, the rational hydrophobic-hydrophilic nature, electronegativity, and smoothness of the surface enable the substantially restricted protein adsorption, platelet adhesion and activation, hemolysis, and thrombosis for the membrane. Importantly, during blood oxygenation, the asymmetric nanoporous membrane shows no thrombus formation and plasma leakage and exhibits fast O₂ and CO₂ transport processes with exchange rates of 20 to 60 and 100 to 350 ml m^-2 min^-1, respectively, which are 2 to 6 times higher than those of conventional membranes. The concepts reported here offer an alternative route to fabricate high-performance membranes and expand the possibilities of nanoporous materials for membrane-based artificial organs.

Structure and thermodynamics of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of materials with diverse chemical and structural properties, and have been shown to effectively adsorb various types of guest molecules. The mechanism of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr, a high-performance atmospheric water harvesting MOF, is investigated using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and infrared spectroscopy. Calculations of thermodynamic and dynamical properties of water as a function of relative humidity allow for following the adsorption process from the initial hydration stage to complete filling of the MOF pores. Initial hydration begins at the water molecules that saturate the open Cr³⁺ sites of the framework, which is then followed by the formation of water chains that extend along the channels connecting the hexagonal pores of the framework. Water present in these channels gradually coalesces and fills the hexagonal pores sequentially after the channels are completely hydrated. The development of hydrogen-bond networks inside the MOF pores as a function of relative humidity is characterized at the molecular level using experimental and computational infrared spectroscopy. A detailed analysis of the OH-stretch vibrational band indicates that the low-frequency tail stems from strongly polarized hydrogen-bonded water molecules, suggesting the presence of some structural disorder in the experimental samples. Strategies for designing efficient water harvesting MOFs are also proposed based on the mechanism of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr.

Recent advances in Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-based hierarchical composites for water treatment by adsorptional photocatalysis: A review

Architecting a desirable and highly efficient nanocomposite for applications like adsorption, catalysis, etc. has always been a challenge. Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-based hierarchical composite has perceived popularity as an advanced adsorbent and catalyst. Hierarchically structured MOF material can be modulated to allow the surface interaction (external or internal) of MOF with the molecules of interest. They are well endowed with tunable functionality, high porosity, and increased surface area epitomizing mass transfer and mechanical stability of the fabricated nanostructure. Additionally, the anticipated optimization of nanocomposite can only be acquired by a thorough understanding of the synthesis techniques. This review starts with a brief introduction to MOF and the requirement for advanced nanocomposites after the setback faced by conventional MOF structures. Further, we discussed the background of MOF-based hierarchical composites followed by synthetic techniques including chemical and thermal treatment. It is important to rationally validate the successful nanocomposite fabrication by characterization techniques, an overview of challenges, and future perspectives associated with MOF-based hierarchically structured nanocomposite.

A customized MOF-polymer composite for rapid gold extraction from water matrices

With the fast-growing accumulation of electronic waste and rising demand for rare metals, it is compelling to develop technologies that can promotionally recover targeted metals, like gold, from waste, a process referred to as urban mining. Thus, there is increasing interest in the design of materials to achieve rapid, selective gold capture while maintaining high adsorption capacity, especially in complex aqueous-based matrices. Here, a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite, BUT-33-poly(para-phenylenediamine) (PpPD), is assessed for gold extraction from several matrices including river water, seawater, and leaching solutions from CPUs. BUT-33-PpPD exhibits a record-breaking extraction rate, with high Au³⁺ removal efficiency (>99%) within seconds (less than 45 s), a competitive capacity (1600 mg/g), high selectivity, long-term stability, and recycling ability. Furthermore, the high porosity and redox adsorption mechanism were shown to be underlying reasons for the material's excellent performance. Given the accumulation of recovered metallic gold nanoparticles inside, the material was also efficiently applied as a catalyst.
