Speciation atlas of polyoxometalates in aqueous solutions

Speciation is the key parameter in solution chemistry that describes the composition, concentration, and oxidation state of each chemical form of an element present in a sample. The speciation study of complex polyatomic ions has remained challenging because of the large number of factors affecting stability and the limited number of direct methods. To address these challenges, we developed the speciation atlas of 10 polyoxometalates commonly used in catalytic and biological applications in aqueous solutions, where the speciation atlas provides both a species distribution database and a predictive model for other polyoxometalates to be used. Compiled for six different polyoxometalate archetypes with three types of addenda ions based on 1309 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra under 54 different conditions, the atlas has revealed a previously unknown behavior of polyoxometalates that may account for their potency as biological agents and catalysts. The atlas is intended to promote the interdisciplinary use of metal oxides in various scientific fields.

A General Metal-Free Protocol for the Visible-Light-Driven Protection of Carbonyls

The protection of a carbonyl is a standard procedure to mask the reactivity of this group towards nucleophiles and reductants. The present work pointed out the potentialities of arylazo sulfones as non-ionic photoacid generators (PAGs) to promote the efficient conversion of aldehydes and ketones into acetals, ketals, and 1,3-oxazolidines upon visible-light irradiation. This approach employed mild conditions and exhibited an easy scalability and a broad scope (80 examples included).

A Cyclen-Functionalized Cobalt-Substituted Sandwich-Type Tungstoarsenate with Versatility in Removal of Methylene Blue and Anti-ROS-Sensitive Tumor Cells

Oxidative degradation by using reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an effective method to treat pollutants. The synthesis of artificial oxidase for the degradation of dyes is a hot spot in molecular science. In this study, a nanoscale sandwich-type polyoxometalate (POM) on the basis of a tetra-nuclear cobalt cluster and trivacant B-α-Keggin-type tungstoarsenate {[Co(C₈H₂₀N₄)]₄}{Co₄(H₂O)₂[HAsW₉O₃₄]₂}∙4H₂O (abbreviated as CAW, C₈H₂₀N₄ = cyclen) has been synthesized and structurally examined by infrared (IR) spectrum, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), and bond valence sum (Σs) calculation. According to the structural analysis, the principal element of the CAW is derived from modifying sandwich-type polyanion {Co₄(H₂O)₂ [HAsW₉O₃₄]₂}^8– with four [Co(Cyclen)]²⁺, in which 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) is firstly applied to modify POM. It is also demonstrated that CAW is capable of efficiently catalyzing the production of ROS by the synergistic effects of POM fragments and Co–cyclen complexes. Moreover, CAW can interfere with the morphology and proliferation of sensitive cells by producing ROS and exhibits ability in specifically eliminating methylene blue (MB) dyes from the solution system by both adsorption and catalytic oxidation.

Photoacid-catalyzed acetalization of carbonyls with alcohols

In this report, we demonstrate that visible light photoactivation of 6-bromo-2-naphthol facilitates the photoacid-catalyzed acetalization of carbonyls with alcohols. We also demonstrate that 2-naphthol when coupled to a photosensitizer provides acetals from electron-deficient aldehydes. In addition, the S₁ excited state pK_a for 6-bromo-2-naphthol in water was determined and shown to have increased excited-state acidity relative to 2-naphthol.

A Novel Tri-Coordination Zinc Complex Functionalized Silicotungstate with ROS Catalytic Ability and Anti-Tumor Cells Activity

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be used as an effective method to treat tumors. Artificial oxidase has received increasing attention as a catalyst for ROS generation in fields ranging from bioinorganic chemistry to pharmaceutical chemistry. In this study, an artificial oxidase based on a binuclear zinc complex and Keggin-type silicotungstate [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2][SiW12O40] (ZSW) (4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine; Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and structurally featured in terms of its X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), bond valence sum (Σs) calculation, IR spectra, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). ZSW is an ionic compound in which the cation is a binuclear zinc complex [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2]4+ and the anion is a α-Keggin-type silicotungstate [SiW12O40]4– cluster. Notably, the Zn ions in the [Zn2(4,4′-bpy)(Phen)2] exist in tri-coordination, which was first obtained in polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry. It was also demonstrated that ZSW is capable of efficiently catalyzing the production of ROS, which, according to the computational calculations, may be due to the synergistic action of zinc complexes and POM building blocks. Furthermore, ZSW exhibited inhibition ability toward ROS-sensitive tumor cells, such as PC12 cells.

Perspectives for the Upgrading of Bio-Based Vicinal Diols within the Developing European Bioeconomy

The previous decade has witnessed a drastic increase of European incentives aimed at pushing forward the transition from an exclusively petro-based economy toward a strong and homogeneous bio-based economy. Since 2012, numerous programs have been developed to stimulate and promote research and innovation relying on sustainable and renewable resources. Terrestrial biomass is a virtually infinite reservoir of biomacromolecules, the biorefining of which provides platform molecules of low complexity yet with tremendous industrial potential. Among such bio-based platform molecules, polyols and, more specifically, molecules featuring vicinal diols have gained tremendous interest and have stimulated an increasing research effort from the chemistry and chemical engineering communities. This Review revolves around the most promising process conditions and technologies reported since 2012 that specifically target bio-based vicinal diols and promote their transformation into value-added molecules of wide industrial interest, such as olefins, epoxides, cyclic carbonates, and ketals.

Double-Shelled Hollow SiO2 @N-C Nanofiber Boosts the Lithium Storage Performance of [PMo12 O40 ]3

Polyoxometalates (POMs)-based materials, with high theoretical capacities and abundant reversible multi-electron redox properties, are considered as promising candidates in lithium-ion storage. However, the poor electronic conductivity, low specific surface area and high solubility in the electrolyte limited their practical applications. Herein, a double-shelled hollow PMo₁₂ -SiO₂ @N-C nanofiber (PMo₁₂ -SiO₂ @N-C, where PMo₁₂ is [PMo₁₂ O₄₀ ]^3- , N-C is nitrogen-doped carbon) was fabricated for the first time by combining coaxial electrospinning technique, thermal treatment and electrostatic adsorption. As an anode material for LIBs, the PMo₁₂ -SiO₂ @N-C delivered an excellent specific capacity of 1641 mA h g^-1 after 1000 cycles under 2 A g^-1 . The excellent electrochemical performance benefited from the unique double-shelled hollow structure of the material, in which the outermost N-C shell cannot only hinder the agglomeration of PMo₁₂ , but also improve its electronic conductivity. The SiO₂ inner shell can efficiently avoid the loss of active components. The hollow structure can buffer the volume expansion and accelerate Li⁺ diffusion during lithiation/delithiation process. Moreover, PMo₁₂ can greatly reduce charge-resistance and facilitate electron transfer of the entire composites, as evidenced by the EIS kinetics study and lithium-ion diffusion analysis. This work paves the way for the fabrication of novel POM-based LIBs anode materials with excellent lithium storage performance.

Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformation and Catalytic Properties of New Hybrid Perhalidometallates

Two new organic–inorganic salts of perhalidometallates with protonated organic amine cations have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. (CHBMAH2)ZnBr4·3/2H2O 1 and (CHBMAH2)ZnCl4 4 [(CHBMAH2)2+: 1,3-cyclohexanebis(methylammonium)] were obtained in single-crystal form. The crystal packing in all of the obtained compounds is governed by the formation of various non-covalent intermolecular forces between tetrahalidometallate anions and organic cations, assisted by water molecules in the hydrates. Hirshfeld surface analysis denotes that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are X···H/H···X (X: Cl, Br, I) and H···H interactions. Interestingly, the compound 1,3-cyclohexanebis(methylammonium)tetrachloridozincate (II) dihydrate, (CHBMAH2)ZnCl4·2H2O 2, undergoes thermally-triggered single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation upon dehydration to produce a supramolecular solid compound, 1,3-cyclohexanebis(methylammonium) tetrachloridozincate (II), (CHBMAH2)ZnCl4 4. The SCSC transformation causes changes in the lattice parameters and a structural rearrangement. Furthermore, the catalytic properties of (CHBMAH2)ZnCl4·2H2O 2 and (CHBMAH2)CdI4·2H2O 3 have been explored in the acetalization process using various uncommon alcohols, beyond methanol or ethanol, for the first time in the literature, with outstanding results, and opening the door to the formation of alternative acetals.

Nickel-Catalyzed Chemoselective Acetalization of Aldehydes With Alcohols under Neutral Conditions

A molecularly defined Ni^II -complex catalyzing the chemoselective acetalization of aldehydes with alcohols under neutral conditions is reported. The reaction is general, efficient and showed a wide substrate scope (including aliphatic aldehydes) as well as excellent functional group tolerance. Reusability of the present nickel catalyst is also demonstrated.

A Simple and Versatile Method for the Formation of Acetals/Ketals Using Trace Conventional Acids

An important and surprising finding that the acetalization and ketalization of aldehydes and ketones with alcohols, respectively, proceed smoothly in the presence of 0.1 mol % acid, without removing water, has been presented. This process has many merits, such as commercial available catalysts with low cost and low loadings (as low as 0.03 mol %), quite a broad substrate scope (including various aldehydes, ketones, acid-sensitive substrates, and diols), a wide range of reaction temperature (-60 to 50 °C), high yields, large-scale preparation, environmental friendliness, and simple work-up procedure. This new protocol has also been successfully applied to protect the important organic compounds, such as 1,3-diols, 1,2-diols, acid-sensitive substrates, glucose, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds.

Synthesis, structural determination and antimicrobial evaluation of two novel CoII and ZnII halogenometallates as efficient catalysts for the acetalization reaction of aldehydes

Background

Complexes of imidazole derivatives with transition metal ions have attracted much attention because of their biological and pharmacological activities, such as antimicrobial, antifungal, antiallergic, antitumoural and antimetastatic properties. In addition, imidazoles occupy an important place owing to their meaningful catalytic activity in several processes, such as in hydroamination, hydrosilylation, Heck reaction and Henry reaction. In this work, we describe the crystallization of two halogenometallate based on 2-methylimidazole. Their IR, thermal analysis, catalytic properties and antibacterial activities have also been investigated.

Results

Two new isostructural organic-inorganic hybrid materials, based on 2-methyl-1H-imidazole, 1 and 2, were synthesized and fully structurally characterized. The analysis of their crystal packing reveals non-covalent interactions, including C/N–H···Cl hydrogen bonds and π···π stacking interactions, to be the main factor governing the supramolecular assembly of the crystalline complexes. The thermal decomposition of the complexes is a mono-stage process, confirmed by the three-dimensional representation of the powder diffraction patterns (TDXD). The catalytic structure exhibited promising activity using MeOH as solvent and as the unique source of acetalization. Moreover, the antimicrobial results suggested that metal-complexes exhibit significant antimicrobial activity.

Conclusion

This study highlights again the structural and the biological diversities within the field of inorganic–organic hybrids.
