Abstract
When bismuth atoms are incorporated into cyclic organic systems, this commonly goes along with strained or distorted molecular geometries, which can be exploited to modulate the physical and chemical properties of these compounds. In six-membered heterocycles, bismuth atoms are often accompanied by oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen as a second hetero-element. In this work, we present the first examples of six-membered rings, in which two CH units are replaced by BiX moieties (X=Cl, Br, I), resulting in dihydro-anthracene analogs. Their behavior in chemically reversible reduction reactions is explored, aiming at the generation of dibisma-anthracene (bismanthrene). Heterometallic compounds (Bi/Fe, Bi/Mn) are introduced as potential bismanthrene surrogates, as supported by bismanthrene-transfer to selenium. Analytical techniques used to investigate the reported compounds include NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
The first organocatalytic diastereoselective (4 + 1) cycloaddition of o-hydroxyphenyl-substituted secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) has been established, which makes use of o-hydroxyphenyl substituted SPOs as suitable four-atom phosphorus-containing 1,4-dinucleophiles and 3-indolylformaldehydes as competent 1,1-dielectrophiles under Bro̷nsted acid catalysis. The reaction mechanism was suggested to involve the formation of 3-indolylmethanol intermediates and vinyliminium intermediates, which played an important role in controlling the reactivity and diastereoselectivity of the (4 + 1) cycloaddition under Bro̷nsted acid catalysis. By this approach, a series of benzo oxaphospholes bearing P- and C-stereocenters were synthesized in moderate to good yields (50%-95% yields) with excellent diastereoselectivities (all >95:5 dr). This reaction not only represents the first organocatalytic diastereoselective (4 + 1) cycloaddition of o-hydroxyphenyl-substituted SPOs but also provides an efficient and diastereoselective method for the construction of phosphorus-containing benzo five-membered heterocyclic skeletons bearing both P-stereocenter and C-stereocenter.

Abstract
Phosphino hydrazones represent a versatile class of nitrogen-containing phosphine ligands. Herein, we report a modular synthesis of phosphino hydrazone ligands by hydrazone condensation reaction of three different aryl hydrazines with 3-(diphenylphosphino)propanal (PCHO). Complexation reactions of these phosphino hydrazone ligands with palladium(II) and platinum(II) were investigated and the catalytic activity of the palladium(II) complexes was explored in a Cu-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction achieving yields up to 96 %. Additionally it was shown that the catalytically active species is homogeneous.

Abstract
The reactive P-N bond in a racemic mixture of endo-1-phospha-2-azanorbornene (PAN) (RP /SP )-endo-1 is readily cleaved with enantiomerically pure lithium alkoxides followed by protonation to afford diastereomeric mixtures of P-chiral 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole derivatives. The isolation of these compounds is rather challenging due to the reversibility of the reaction (elimination of alcohols). However, methylation of the sulfonamide moiety of the intermediate lithium salts and sulfur protection of the phosphorus atom prevent the elimination reaction. The resulting air-stable P-chiral diastereomeric 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole sulfide mixtures can be readily isolated and fully characterized. The diastereomers can be separated by crystallization. The 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole sulfides are readily reduced with Raney nickel to afford phosphorus(III) P-stereogenic 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophospholes with potential use in asymmetric homogeneous transition metal catalysis.

Abstract
Phosphole oxides undergo a highly chemoselective reaction with sulfonyl isocyanates forming sulfonylimino phospholes in high yields. This facile modification proved to be a powerful tool for obtaining new phosphole-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens with high fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state. Changing the chemical environment of the phosphorus atom of the phosphole framework results in a significant shift of the fluorescence maximum to longer wavelengths.

Abstract
Dibenzo[b,g]phosphindolizine oxide and three types of benzo[e]naphthophosphindolizine oxides have been synthesized by the ring-closing metathesis of benzo[b]phosphole oxide and naphthophosphole oxides with two olefin tethers. Their molecular structures and properties were revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, and electrochemical analysis. The number and position of the benzene rings were found to alter the structural geometry and the HOMO/LUMO energy levels, and their effects were investigated by theoretical calculations. Among the phosphindolizine oxide derivatives investigated, only benzo[e]naphtho[2,3-b]phosphindolizine oxide with the naphthalene ring fused at 2,3-positions showed weak yellow fluorescence with a large Stokes shift.

Abstract
A synthetic strategy to β-silylphospholes with three methoxy, ethoxy, chloro, hydrido, or phenyl substituents at silicon has been developed, starting from trimethoxy, triethoxy, or triphenyl silyl substituted phenyl phosphanides and 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiyne. These trifunctional silylphospholes were attached to the surface of uniform spheric silica particles (15 μm) and, for comparison, to a polyhedral silsesquioxane (POSS)-trisilanol as a molecular model to explore their luminescent properties in comparison with the free phospholes. Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate any electronic perturbation of the phosphole system by the trifunctional silyl anchoring unit. For the immobilized phospholes, cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR measurements (13C, 29Si, and 31P) were carried out to explore the bonding situation to the silica surface. Thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were performed to approximate the amount of phospholes covering the silica surface. Identity and purity of all novel phospholes have been established with standard techniques (multinuclear NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis) and X-ray diffraction for the POSS derivative.

Abstract
While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

Abstract
A simple method to build phospholene derivatives has been achieved in a one-pot reaction with readily available o-alkynylaryl bromides and alkylphosphine oxides. This method is also applicable to synthesize P-stereogenic phospholenes, and the resulting chiral phosphine was utilized as a ligand for coordination chemistry.

Abstract
A series of structurally differentiated α‐cationic phospholes containing cyclopropenium, imidazolium, and iminium substituents has been synthesized by reaction of chlorophosphole 1 with the corresponding stable carbenes. Evaluation of the donor properties of these compounds reveals that their strong π‐acceptor character is heavily influenced by the nature of the cationic group. The coordination chemistry of these newly prepared ligands towards AuI centers is also described and their unique electronic properties exploited in catalysis. Interestingly, α‐cationic phosphole containing catalysts were not only able to accelerate model cycloisomerization reactions, but also to efficiently discriminate between concurrent reaction pathways, avoiding the formation of undesired product mixtures.

Abstract
A series of 1-substituted-3-methyl-2-phospholene oxides was prepared from the corresponding 3-phospholene oxides by double bond rearrangement. The 2-phospholene oxides could be obtained by heating the 3-phospholene oxides in methanesulfonic acid, or via the formation of cyclic chlorophosphonium salts. Whereas mixtures of the 2- and 3-phospholene oxides formed, when the isomerization of 3-phospholene oxides was attempted under thermal conditions, or in the presence of a base. The mechanisms of the various double bond migration pathways were elucidated by quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Platinum complexes have been often considered as the least reactive of the group 10 triad metals. Slow kinetics are behind this lack of reactivity but, still, some industrially relevant catalytic process are dominated by platinum compounds and sometimes different selectivities can be found in comparison to Ni or Pd. Nevertheless, during the last years, it has been reported that the catalytic behaviour of well-defined platinum derivatives can be improved through a judicious choice of their electronic and steric properties, leading to highly electrophilic or low-electron count platinum systems. In this feature article, we highlight some catalytic processes in which well-defined electrophilic platinum complexes or coordinatively unsaturated systems play an important role in their catalytic activity.

Preparation of Palladium(II) Complexes of 1-substituted-3-phospholene Ligands and their Evaluation as Catalysts in Hydroalkoxycarbonylation. CURR ORG CHEM 2020. Abstract
:
A series of palladium(II) complexes incorporating 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-
phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation
followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)2. The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-
phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the
ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture
of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic
starting materials were used. An optically active Pd-complex containing (R)-1-propyl-
3-phospholene ligand was also prepared. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-
phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of
styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation
of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)2-type
complexes was low.

Abstract
All-carbon tetrasubstituted olefins have been found in numerous biologically important compounds and organic materials. However, regio- and stereocontrolled construction of this structural motif still constitutes a significant synthetic challenge. Here, we show that a modular and regioselective synthesis of all-carbon tetrasubstituted olefins can be realized via alkenyl halide- or triflate-mediated palladium/norbornene catalysis, which is enabled by a modified norbornene containing a C2 amide moiety. This new norbornene co-catalyst effectively suppressed undesired cyclopropanation pathways, which have previously been a main obstacle for developing such reactions. Diverse cyclic and acyclic alkenyl bromides or triflates with a wide range of functional groups can be employed as substrates. Various substituents can be introduced at the alkene C1 and C2 positions regioselectively simply by changing the coupling partners. Initial mechanistic studies provide insights on the rate-limiting step as well as the structure of the actual active ligand in this system.

Abstract
Dibenzo[b,e]phosphindolizines 1 were successfully synthesized by a ring-closing metathesis of benzo[b]phosphole chalcogenides 2a-2c with two vinyl tethers (for chalcogen analogs 1a-1c), and by a deselenization reaction (for lone-pair analog 1d). The structures, properties, and bowl inversion derived from a phosphorus atom were fully investigated.

Abstract
Phosphole P(V) derivatives are interesting building blocks for various applications from ligand synthesis to material sciences. We herein describe the preparation and characterisation of new 2,4-disubstituted oxo-, thiooxo-, and selenooxophospholes. The nature of the substituents on the phosphole ring determines the reactivity of these compounds towards homodimerization reactions. Aryl and trimethylsilyl substituted oxophospholes undergo selective [4+2] dimerization, whereas, for thiooxo- and selenooxophospholes, light-induced, selective [2+2] head-to-head dimerization occurs in the case of aryl substituents. DFT calculations provide some insights on these differences in reactivity.

Abstract
This review covers recent approaches to the synthesis of tertiary phosphines through the C–
PR2 (R = alkyl or aryl) bond formation reactions using palladium. The methods include Pd-catalyzed
additions of HPR2 to double and triple bonds, substitution and dynamic kinetic resolution of diaryl
(pseudo) halide compounds, reactions of cyclopalladated complexes with MPR2 (M = Li or K) or HPR2,
intramolecular phosphination, and C–P+ bond cleavages. Together these methods allow for the preparation
of diversely functionalized achiral or enantiopure tertiary phosphines for use in organo- and transition
metal catalysis among other important applications.
