Preparation of a multifunctional organogel and its electrochemical properties

A facile methodology to fabricate a highly elastic organogel for supercapacitors is demonstrated. A stable polymer organogel was obtained in DMSO by a simple esterification reaction. This organogel showed high mechanical performance, flexibility, high elasticity, luminous performance and conductivity, as well as high potential values for application in the energy sector.

Efficient artificial light-harvesting systems based on aggregation-induced emission in supramolecular gels

Based on a new designed acyl hydrazone gelator (G2), we developed a supramolecular organogel in glycol with two different hydrophobic fluorescent dyes, namely rhodamine B (RhB) and acridine red, as acceptors. Both the G2@gel-RhB and G2@gel-acridine red systems showed high levels of energy-transfer efficiency and high fluorescence quantum yields.

Stimuli responsive dynamic transformations in supramolecular gels

Supramolecular gels are formed by the self-assembly of small molecules under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. As the interactions are individually weak and reversible, it is possible to perturb the gels easily, which in turn enables fine tuning of their properties. Synthetic supramolecular gels are kinetically trapped and usually do not show time variable changes in material properties after formation. However, such materials potentially become switchable when exposed to external stimuli like temperature, pH, light, enzyme, redox, and chemical analytes resulting in reconfiguration of gel matrix into a different type of network. Such transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in alteration of physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods that have been used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. We also describe methods that allow time-dependent autonomous switching of gels into different networks enabling synthesis of next generation functional materials. Dynamic modification of gels allows construction of an array of supramolecular gels with various properties from a single material which eventually extend the limit of applications of the gels. In some cases, gel-to-gel transitions lead to materials that cannot be accessed directly. Finally, we point out the necessity and possibility of further exploration of the field.

Intelligent writable material based on a supramolecular self-assembly gel

A simple dual acylhydrazone-functionalized gelator (G1) has been designed and synthesized, and it was found to form a supramolecular organogel (G1-gel) in a mixed solvent of DMF-H2O. The gelator solution shows brilliant blue light upon mixing with Mg2+; this blue light can be erased by saliva or CO32-. Owing to this characteristic, a smart erasable writable material was prepared.

Supramolecular Peptide Gels: Influencing Properties by Metal Ion Coordination and Their Wide-Ranging Applications

Supramolecular gels have been an area of interest in many research fields. They provide a means to understand assembly of nanostructures, and through the use of amino acid- and peptide-based gelators they can give insights into the similar assembly pathways of their more complex structural counterparts. Bio-inspired metal coordination, such as histidine-copper coordination, in the supramolecular assembly of these gelators is one method for furthering our understanding and development of these materials. Metal-gelator coordination mimics biologically relevant metal-peptide coordination, thus influencing hydrogel self-assembly and mechanical properties, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, tunability, and recyclablity, while the metal coordination can functionalize the gels to allow for widespread applications in biomedical industries (e.g., drug delivery), waste management, and catalysis. This review aims to discuss recent insights into the supramolecular assembly of gels involving metal ions, as well as a few key areas of application using metal interactions and incorporation.

Emissive intelligent supramolecular gel for highly selective sensing of Al3+ and writable soft material

A fluorine-containing acylhydrazone was newly designed and found to form gels in a mixed solvent of DMSO-ethylene glycol. The gelator could show brilliant blue light upon mixing with Al3+, which could be erased by F- ions and thus forming an erasable gel.

A La3+-selective metallohydrogel with a facile gelator of a phenylalanine derivative containing an imidazole group

The first La3+-selective metallohydrogel was constructed by using a facile gelator of a phenylalanine derivative containing an imidazole group, N-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylidene-l-phenylalanine, namely La-ImF, which exhibits multi-stimuli responsive properties, including to heat, shearing, pH, etc. Various measurements were also carried out to obtain insights into the mechanism of gelation. Moreover, the La-ImF hydrogel can adsorb toxic dyes, making it a potential candidate for sewage treatment.

Chemical Design of Functional Polymer Structures for Biosensors: From Nanoscale to Macroscale

Over the past decades, biosensors, a class of physicochemical detectors sensitive to biological analytes, have drawn increasing interest, particularly in light of growing concerns about human health. Functional polymeric materials have been widely researched for sensing applications because of their structural versatility and significant progress that has been made concerning their chemistry, as well as in the field of nanotechnology. Polymeric nanoparticles are conventionally used in sensing applications due to large surface area, which allows rapid and sensitive detection. On the macroscale, hydrogels are crucial materials for biosensing applications, being used in many wearable or implantable devices as a biocompatible platform. The performance of both hydrogels and nanoparticles, including sensitivity, response time, or reversibility, can be significantly altered and optimized by changing their chemical structures; this has encouraged us to overview and classify chemical design strategies. Here, we have organized this review into two main sections concerning the use of nanoparticles and hydrogels (as polymeric structures) for biosensors and described chemical approaches in relevant subcategories, which act as a guide for general synthetic strategies.

A novel thermo-responsive supramolecular organogel based on dual acylhydrazone: fluorescent detection for Al3+ ions

A new dual acylhydrazone-functionalized gelator (L) has been synthesized, which behaves as a thermal-responsive supramolecular organogel (L-gel) in DMSO. This L-gel exhibits very weak fluorescence based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The L-gel can recognize Al³⁺ and assemble into an enhanced blue-light-emitting supramolecular metallogel (Al@gel).

A thermo-responsive supramolecular gel and its luminescence enhancement induced by rare earth Y3

A new acylhydrazone-functionalized dual benzimidazole derivative gelator (L) was synthesized. L can self-assemble in DMSO-EG (ethylene glycol) or DMF-water mixtures to form a thermo-responsive supramolecular organogel (L-gel). In order to increase the fluorescence intensity of L-gel (DMSO-EG system), L-gel slowly turned into a clear solution upon addition of one equivalent of RE (rare earth) Y³⁺. Interestingly, this gelator L and Y³⁺ can be assembled into an enhanced blue-light-emitting supramolecular metallogel (Y@gel) in DMF-water mixtures.

Self-Assembly of Hierarchical Chiral Nanostructures Based on Metal-Benzimidazole Interactions: Chiral Nanofibers, Nanotubes, and Microtubular Flowers

Controlled hierarchical self-assembly of synthetic molecules into chiral nanoarchitectures to mimic those biological chiral structures is of great importance. Here, a low-molecular-weight organogelator containing a benzimidazole moiety conjugated with an amphiphilic l-glutamic amide has been designed and its self-assembly into various hierarchical chiral nanostructures is investigated. Upon gel formation in organic solvents, 1D chiral nanostructure such as nanofiber and nanotube are obtained depending on the solvents. In the presence of transition and rare earth metal ions, hierarchical chiral nanostructures are formed. Specifically, the addition of TbCl3 , EuCl3 , and AgNO3 leads to nanofiber structures, while the addition of Cu(NO3 )2 , Tb(NO3 )3 , or Eu(NO3 )3 provides the microflower structures and microtubular flower structures, respectively. While Eu(III) and Tb(III)-containing microtubular flowers keep the chirality, the Cu(II)-coordinated microflowers lose chirality. More interestingly, the nanofibers formed by the gelator coordinated with Eu(III) or Tb(III) ions show not only the supramolecular chirality but also the circularly polarized luminescence.

A two-stage-assembly of a supramolecular gel (B-gel) can emit brilliant blue light due to the strong AIEE effect depending on the multiple hydrogen-bonding and coordination bonds between gelator L and Cd²⁺.

Supramolecular Hydrogelators and Hydrogels: From Soft Matter to Molecular Biomaterials

In this review we intend to provide a relatively comprehensive summary of the work of supramolecular hydrogelators after 2004 and to put emphasis particularly on the applications of supramolecular hydrogels/hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials. After a brief introduction of methods for generating supramolecular hydrogels, we discuss supramolecular hydrogelators on the basis of their categories, such as small organic molecules, coordination complexes, peptides, nucleobases, and saccharides. Following molecular design, we focus on various potential applications of supramolecular hydrogels as molecular biomaterials, classified by their applications in cell cultures, tissue engineering, cell behavior, imaging, and unique applications of hydrogelators. Particularly, we discuss the applications of supramolecular hydrogelators after they form supramolecular assemblies but prior to reaching the critical gelation concentration because this subject is less explored but may hold equally great promise for helping address fundamental questions about the mechanisms or the consequences of the self-assembly of molecules, including low molecular weight ones. Finally, we provide a perspective on supramolecular hydrogelators. We hope that this review will serve as an updated introduction and reference for researchers who are interested in exploring supramolecular hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials for addressing the societal needs at various frontiers.

White-Light-Emitting Lanthanide Metallogels with Tunable Luminescence and Reversible Stimuli-Responsive Properties

We have developed model light-emitting metallogels functionalized with lanthanide metal-ligand coordination complexes via a terpyridyl-end-capped four-arm poly(ethylene glycol) polymer. The optical properties of these highly luminescent polymer networks are readily modulated over a wide spectrum, including white-light emission, simply by tuning of the lanthanide metal ion stoichiometry. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the Ln-N coordination bonding leads to a broad variety of reversible stimuli-responsive properties (mechano-, vapo-, thermo-, and chemochromism) of both sol-gel systems and solid thin films. The versatile functional performance combined with the ease of assembly suggests that this lanthanide coordination polymer design approach offers a robust pathway for future engineering of multi-stimuli-responsive polymer materials.

Terbium(iii)-cholate functionalized vesicles as luminescent indicators for the enzymatic conversion of dihydroxynaphthalene diesters
