Synthesis of Modified Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite for Treating Textile Wastewater. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12020289. Abstract
In this work, we demonstrated a strategy to design a modified starch/polyvinyl alcohol composite (CCSP), which was employed as a highly efficient and economical fixed-bed adsorbent for treating textile wastewater. Characterization revealed that most of the CCSP was shaped with the morphology of sphericity, and had some water swelling properties. The crystallinity of the CCSP was lower than that of native starch and polyvinyl alcohol, and its average particle size gradually increased with the dosage increase of cationic starch in the preparation. Adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of CCSP were more than 605 and 539 mg/g for Reactive Black 5 and Reactive Orange 131, respectively, which were over 10 times larger than that of commercial activated carbon (AC). The mixture adsorbent composed of CCSP and AC could remove starch, polyvinyl alcohol, and dyes from textile wastewater completely and simultaneously combined with the fixed-bed technique, and its adsorption capacity was conducted as a function of the bed height and flow rate. Most importantly, the disabled mixture adsorbent could be converted into regenerated AC through a chemical activation process, thereby avoiding the production of solid waste. This study will provide a new efficient green sustainable method for treating textile wastewater.

Abstract
Abstract
Because of high mobility, the immobilization of long-lived fission product 79Se (often existed as 79Se(IV) and 79Se(VI) anions) is a critical consideration in the repository of high-level radioactive waste. In this work, a Fe-OOH modified bentonite (Fe-OOH-bent) was synthesized as a potential filling material in the repository site for effective adsorption and present the migration of different species of 79Se. The adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, XFS, zeta potential and BET to clarify its physical properties, compositions and structures. A good thermal and radiation stabilities of Fe-OOH-bent was confirmed by its stable uptake ratio for Se(IV) and Se(VI) compared to original samples. The batch experimental results show that Se(IV) and Se(VI) can be efficiently removed from aqueous by Fe-OOH-bent within 60 min with maximum adsorption capacities of 68.45 mg/g for Se(IV) and 40.47 mg/g for Se(VI) in the optimal conditions, indicating its high potential application in consideration of its simple synthesis process, low cost and high adsorption capacity in view of immobilization of 79Se. The surface species and variation of oxide state of Fe as well as Se(IV) and Se(VI) onto Fe-OOH-bent were investigated by XPS analysis. The values of relative area of Se(IV)–O and Se(VI)–O in XPS spectra followed the same tendency as their adsorption ratio with the variation of system pH, suggesting that the formation of complexes between selenium species and Fe-OOH-bent surface.

Abstract
The organization of matter from its constitutive units recruits intermediate states with distinctive degrees of self-association and molecular order. Existing as clusters, droplets, gels as well as amorphous and crystalline nanoparticles, these precursor forms have fundamental contributions towards the composition and structure of inorganic and organic architectures. In this personal account, we show that the transitions from atoms, molecules or ionic species to superstructures of higher order are intertwined with the interfaces and interactions of precursor and intermediate states. Structural organizations distributed across different length scales are explained by the multistep nature of nucleation and crystallization, which can be guided towards functional hybrid materials by the strategic application of additives, templates and reaction environments. Thus, the non-classical pathways for material formation and growth offer conceptual frameworks for elucidating, inducing and directing fascinating material organizations of biogenic and synthetic origins.

Abstract
The pristine points of zero charge (PZC) and isoelectric points (IEP) of metal oxides and IEP of other materials from the recent literature, and a few older results (overlooked in previous searches) are summarized. This study is an update of the previous compilations by the same author [Surface Charging and Points of Zero Charge, CRC, Boca Raton, 2009; J. Colloid Interface Sci. 337 (2009) 439; 353 (2011) 1; 426 (2014) 209]. The field has been very active, but most PZC and IEP are reported for materials, which are very well-documented already (silica, alumina, titania, iron oxides). IEP of (nominally) Gd2O3, NaTaO3, and SrTiO3 have been reported in the recent literature. Their IEP were not reported in older studies.

Abstract
The attractive properties of layered inorganic materials, which make them suitable for numerous applications in chemical industries and life sciences, originated from their crystalline framework structures. Here, we report a new layered germanate PKU-21, which was prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method using 2-propanolamine (MIPA) as the structure-directing agent. The structure of PKU-21 was determined from synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. It reveals a complicated framework structure containing 18 unique Ge atoms in the asymmetric unit. PKU-21 is the first layered germanate built from both Ge7 and Ge10 clusters, following the 3-dimensional germanate PKU-17. The preparation and structure of PKU-21 are discussed in comparison with PKU-17, which provides new insight into the formation mechanism of germanates. Gas sorption experiments indicate that the layered PKU-21 sample exhibits a better CO2 sorption selectivity over N2 and CH4 at 298 K than at 273 K, making it a promising candidate for CO2 separation.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a barium-titanate/mesoporous silica nanocomposite material BaTiO3@SBA-15 via aerosol assisted solid state reaction using SBA-15 as a hard template. Hexavalent chromium is one of the most harmful contaminants of industrial waste-water. We have used BaTiO3@SBA-15 nanocomposite as an adsorbent for the removal of chromium(vi)-contaminated water and it showed an adsorption capacity of 98.2 wt% within only 40 min contact time in a batch reactor. This mesoporous composite has retained this excellent adsorption efficiency of hexavalent chromium for several repetitive cycles, suggesting its future potential for the remediation of water contaminated with Cr(vi).
