A review of available analytical technologies for qualitative and quantitative determination of nitramines

Ab initio kinetics of the CH3NH + NO2 reaction: formation of nitramines and N-alkyl nitroxides

This study provides a detailed understanding of how the reaction between CH3NH, one of the primary products of the CH3NH2 + OH/Cl reactions, and NOx occurs in the atmosphere since the reaction is expected to be a dominant sink for the tropospheric CH3NH radical. First, we focus on the reaction of the aminyl radical CH3NH with NO2, complementing the known reaction between CH3NH and NO, to provide the overall picture of the CH3NH + NOx system. The reaction was meticulously examined across the extended range of temperature (298-2000 K) and pressure (0.76-76 000 torr) using quantum chemistry calculations and kinetic modeling based on the framework of the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM)-based master equation. Highly correlated electronic structure calculations unveil that the intricate reaction mechanism of the CH3NH + NO2 reaction, which can proceed through O-addition or N-addition to form NO2, encompasses numerous steps, channels, and various intermediates and products. The temperature-/pressure-dependent kinetic behaviors and product distribution of the CH3NH + NO2 reaction are revealed under atmospheric and combustion conditions. The main products under atmospheric conditions are found to be CH3NHO and NO, as well as CH3NHNO2, while under combustion conditions, the primary products are only CH3NHO and NO. Given its stability under ambient conditions, CH3NHNO2, a nitramine, is believed to have the potential to induce DNA damage, which can ultimately result in severe cancers. Secondly, by building upon prior research on the CH3NH + NO system, this study shows that the reaction of CH3NH with NOx holds greater importance in urban areas with elevated NOx emissions than other oxidants like O2. Furthermore, this reaction occurs swiftly and results in the creation of various compounds, such as the carcinogenic nitrosamine (CH3NHNO), carcinogenic nitramine (CH3NHNO2), CH3NNOH, (CH3NN + H2O) and (CH3NHO + NO).

Levels of nitramines and nitrosamines in lake drinking water close to a CO2 capture plant: A modelling perspective

While CO₂ capture is considered a key climate change mitigation option, we must ensure that global implementation occurs without causing harm to the local environment and the human health. The most mature option for capture is using amines, which however, is associated with a risk of contaminating nearby drinking water sources with carcinogenic nitramines (NAs) and nitrosamines (NSAs). Here we present the first process-based simulation of NAs and NSAs in a catchment-lake system with the input of previously modelled atmospheric deposition rates. Considering full-scale CO₂ capture at the Oslo waste incineration plant in Norway, future (∼10 y) levels in a nearby lake approach the national drinking water limit. We further quantified the effect of hydrological and biogeochemical processes and identified those with the highest sensitivity (NA biodegradation). The uncertainty of the results is presented by a probabilistic distribution (Monte Carlo analysis), incorporating variability in catchment, lake, and literature NA and NSA parameter values. This modelling tool allows for the site-specific assessment of the abovementioned risks related to amine-based CO₂ capture and aspires to contribute to the sound evaluation of costly amine emission reduction measures.

Development of a rapid GC-FID method to simultaneously determine triethylamine, diisopropylamine, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine residues in an active pharmaceutical ingredient

A rapid GC-FID method was developed to simultaneously determine residual levels of triethylamine (TEA), 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG), and diisopropylamine (DIPA) in the synthetic route of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Due to the severe absorption of amines on GC stationary phases, GC columns with various stationary phases were evaluated for optimal peak shape and reproducibility. The final conditions used the Agilent CP-Volamine column to resolve the three amines in 12 min. Various inlet liners were also screened to further improve the sensitivity of the analysis. The Restek Siltek® liner was selected to achieve the desired detectability for the method. The quantitation limits were 4, 3, and 4 μg/mL for TEA, DIPA, and TMG in the presence of API, respectively. All three amines showed good linearity (r > 0.999) and recoveries (> 90%) over the concentration range of 3 to 16 μg/mL. The testing of residual amines was initially performed at the penultimate stage of the synthesis. However, this work demonstrates that TMG can act as a proton sponge to react with salicylic acid, the counter ion of the penultimate, to form a volatile component that elutes at a different retention time. Consequently, in the final method, these three amines were monitored in the final API to circumvent the matrix interference. Key parameters of the method were qualified per method validation requirements in ICH guidelines. The method was successfully applied for batch testing during development and implemented as an in-process control procedure at manufacturing sites.

Organic Analysis of Environmental Samples Using Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array and Fluorescence Detectors: An Overview

This overview is focused to provide an useful guide of the families of organic pollutants that can be determined by liquid chromatography operating in reverse phase and ultraviolet/fluorescence detection. Eight families have been classified as the main groups to be considered: carbonyls, carboxyls, aromatics, phenols, phthalates, isocyanates, pesticides and emerging. The references have been selected based on analytical methods used in the environmental field, including both the well-established procedures and those more recently developed.
