Abstract
As the postsynthesis-processed metal-organic material-based catalysts for energy applications add additional cost to the whole process, the importance of developing synthesized usable pristine catalysts is quite evident. The present work reports a new Cu-based coordination polymer (Cu-CP) catalyst to be used in its pristine form for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) application. The catalyst was characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The Cu-CP exhibits admirable electrocatalytic ORR activity with an onset potential of 0.84 V versus RHE and a half wave potential of 0.69 V versus RHE. As revealed by the density functional theory-based computational mechanistic investigation of the electrocatalytic ORR process, the electrochemically reduced Cu(I) center binds to the molecular O2 through an exergonic process (ΔG = -6.8 kcal/mol) and generates the Cu(II)-O2•- superoxo intermediate. Such superoxo intermediates are frequently encountered in the catalytic cycle of the Cu-containing metalloenzymes in their O2 reduction reaction. This intermediate undergoes coupled proton and electron transfer processes to give OH- in an alkaline medium involving H2O2 as the intermediate. The electrocatalytic performance of Cu-CP remained stable even up to 3000 cycles. Overall, the newly developed Cu-CP-based electrocatalyst holds promising potential for efficient biomimetic ORR reactivity, which opens new possibilities toward the development of robust coordination polymer-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract
Two new benzimidazole Schiff base copper(ii) compounds [Cu(5-CH2PPh3-2-salmethylben)(NO3)(H2O)][BF4]·2/3(H2O)·1/3(MeOH) (1) and [Cu(5-CH2NEt3-2-salmethylben)(Cl)][BF4] (2) were synthesised by mixing 2-(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)aniline, (3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride or N,N-diethyl-N-(3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)ethanaminium chloride and Cu(NO3)2·3H2O or CuCl2·2H2O in the presence of tetrafluoroborate in a binary mixture of MeOH : H2O under refluxing conditions. The structures of the compounds were established by elemental analysis, FT-IR, ESI-MS analytical techniques and, for 1, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic methods were performed to evaluate the calf thymus DNA interactions with the compounds. The calculated binding constants (Kb) of 3.14 × 105 M-1 for 1 and 3.20 × 105 M-1 for 2 were established. The intercalative DNA binding mode was also verified by molecular docking studies. Both compounds demonstrated a notable in vitro cytotoxic effect against human A-549 (lung carcinoma), MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HeLa (cervical cancer) cancer cell lines. A substantial repressive effect on the proliferation of MCF-7 cells (breast cancer cells) was observed for compound 1. The mechanism of action for the effective antiproliferative activity of 1 has additionally been confirmed by means of various biological studies such as morphological assessment through AO/EB, detection of apoptotic induction via Hoechst/PI dual staining, flow cytometry for detection of cell cycle arrest, quantitative analysis of apoptotic cells, DNA degradation, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and by apoptotic induction through mitochondrial staining.

Abstract
The mononuclear zinc(II) complex cis-[ZnL2(H2O)2] (1; L = 4-(pyridin-3-ylcarbamoyl)benzoate) was synthesized and characterized. By soaking crystals of 1 in a mixture of DMF-H2O solution containing a slight excess of Cu(NO3)2 × 3H2O a transmetalation reaction occurred affording the related copper(II) complex trans-[CuL2(H2O)2] (2). The structures of the compounds were authenticated by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealing, apart from a change in the isomerism, an alteration in the relative orientation of the chelating carboxylate groups and of the pyridine moieties. H-bond interactions stabilize both geometries and expand them into two-dimensional (2D) networks. The transmetalation was confirmed by SEM-EDS analysis. Moreover, the thermodynamic feasibility of the transmetalation is demonstrated by density-functional theory (DFT) studies. The catalytic activities of 1 and 2 for the oxidation of styrene and for the nitroaldol (Henry) C-C coupling reaction were investigated. The copper(II) compound 2 acts as heterogeneous catalyst for the microwave-assisted oxidation of styrene with aqueous hydrogen peroxide, yielding selectively (>99%) benzaldehyde up to 66% of conversion and with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 132 h-1. The zinc(II) complex 1 is the most active catalyst (up to 87% yield) towards the nitroaldol (Henry) coupling reaction between benzaldehyde and nitro-methane or -ethane to afford the corresponding β-nitro alcohols. The reaction of benzaldehyde with nitroethane in the presence of 1 produced 2-nitro-1-phenylpropanol in the syn and the anti diastereoisomeric forms, with a considerable higher selectivity towards the former (66:34).

Abstract
Chiral copper(II) and cobalt(III) complexes (1-5 and 6, respectively) derived from Schiff bases of (S)-2-(aminomethyl)pyrrolidine and salicylaldehyde derivatives were employed in a mechanistic study of the Henry reaction-type condensation of nitromethane and o-nitrobenzaldehyde in CH2Cl2 (CD2Cl2), containing different amounts of water. The reaction kinetics was monitored by 1H and 13C NMR. The addition of water had a different influence on the activity of the two types of complexes, ranging from a crucial positive effect in the case of the copper(II) complex 2 to insignificant in the case of the stereochemically inert cobalt(III) complex 6. No experimental support was found by 1H NMR studies for the classical Lewis acid complexation of the carbonyl group of the aldehyde by the central copper(II) ion, and, moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the absence of such coordination. On the other hand, a very significant complexation was found for water, and it was supported by DFT calculations. In fact, we suggest that it is the Brønsted acidity of the water molecule coordinated to the metal ion that triggers the aldehyde activation. The rate-limiting step of the reaction was the removal of an α-proton from the nitromethane molecule, as supported by the observed kinetic isotope effect equaling 6.3 in the case of the copper complex 2. It was found by high-resolution mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization that the copper(II) complex 2 existed in CH2Cl2 in a dimeric form. The reaction had a second-order dependence on the catalyst concentration, which implicated two dimeric forms of the copper(II) complex 2 in the rate-limiting step. Furthermore, DFT calculations help to generate a plausible structure of the stereodetermining transition step of the condensation.

Abstract
The reactions of 3,3'-{(pyridine-2,6-dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl)}dibenzoic acid (H2L) with zinc(II), cadmium(II), and samarium(III) nitrates were studied, and the obtained compounds, [Zn(1κO:2κO'-L)(H2O)2] n (1), [Cd(1κO 2:2κO 2-L)(H2O)2]2 ⋅6n H2O⋅ n C4H8O2 ⋅1.5n DMF (2), and [Sm(1κO:2κO'O'':3κO'''-L)(NO3)(H2O)(dmf)] n ⋅ n DMF (3), were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Compounds 1 and 3 have 1D zigzag- and double-chain-type structures, respectively, whereas 2 features a dinuclear metallomacrocyclic complex. The ligand (L2-) orients in different conformations, that is, syn-syn for 1 and anti-anti for 2 and 3. Compound 1 is the first example in which the syn-syn conformation for this ligand has been observed. These compounds act as heterogeneous catalysts for the nitroaldol (Henry; in water medium) and Knoevenagel condensation reactions of different aldehydes, and the most effective is zinc coordination polymer 1. Recyclability, heterogeneity, and size-selectivity tests were performed, which showed that the catalyst was highly active over at least four recycling runs.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) imbedded privileged molecular catalysts are of particular interest due to their higher catalytic activities derived from the MOFs pore/channel confinement effect, improved lifetime through eliminating intermolecular deactivation pathway, and the recyclability based on their heterogeneity. In this work, a 3D chiral metallosalen-based MOF [Cd2(Cu(salen))(DMF)3]·DMF·3H2O (1) with a 1D open channel was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other physicochemical methods. Upon postsynthetic reduction modification with NaBH4, the conversion from imino to amino group on salen cores of 1 generates the reduction product 2 with a more flexible chiral group and more alkaline backbone, meanwhile still maintaining the original porous framework. 2 can be used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric Henry reaction with broad substrate applicability and exhibits higher activity and enantioselectivity (ee up to 98%) compared with the unreduced 1. Note that 2 can accelerate the Henry reaction of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde possessing a potential coordination atom with excellent ee value; however, the homogeneous counterpart does not. In addition, the bulky aldehydes show a decrease in activity but almost the same enantioselectivity with an increase in the molecular size of substrates as a result of the chiral confinement effect of 2, indicating the size-dependent selectivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest enantioselectivity for asymmetric Henry reaction catalyzed by MOF-based catalysts.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis and structural characterization of a novel dinuclear Cu(ii) complex containing a new flexible mixed pyridine-carboxylate ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals its uniqueness with two coordinated water molecules and four uncoordinated pyridyl groups. Utilizing the bifunctional catalytic sites, it has been found to be an efficient, robust and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the diastereoselective Henry (nitroaldol) reaction of aldehydes with nitroethane.
