Metal-free construction of dihydropyrazino[2,3-b]indoles from 2-aminoacetophenones, isocyanates and 1,2-diamines

A Brønsted acid/iodine co-mediated approach to construct dihydropyrazino[2,3-b]indoles in 2-MeTHF as a green solvent at room temperature was established. A wide range of diversely substituted dihydropyrazino[2,3-b]indoles (42 examples, 61-85% yields) were synthesized under mild conditions, even on a gram scale. This protocol features organocatalysts, an eco-friendly solvent, mild conditions, readily accessible substrates, broad substrate scope and simple work-up.

Naphthodithiophene-Fused Porphyrins: Synthesis, Characterization, and Impact of Extended Conjugation on Aromaticity

The fusion of tetrapyrroles with aromatic heterocycles constitutes a useful tool for manipulating their opto-electronic properties. In this work, the synthesis of naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins was achieved through a Heck reaction-based cascade of steps followed by the Scholl reaction. The naphthodithiophene-fused porphyrins display a unique set of optical and electronic properties. Fusion of the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F2VTP) leads to a ~20% increase in the fluorescence lifetime, which is accompanied, unexpectedly, by a more than two-fold drop in the emission quantum yield (ϕ=0.018). In contrast, fusion of the isomeric naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene to porphyrin (F3VPT) results in a ~1.5-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield (ϕ=0.13) with a concomitant ~30 % increase in the fluorescence lifetime. This behavior suggests that fusion of the porphyrin with the naphthodithiopheno-system mainly affects the radiative rate constant in the Q-state deactivation pathway, where the effects of the isomeric naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene- versus naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene-fusion are essentially the opposite. Interestingly, nucleus-independent chemical shifts analysis revealed a considerable difference between the aromaticities of these two isomeric systems. Our results demonstrate that subtle structural differences in the fused components of the porphyrin can be reflected in rather significant differences between the photophysical properties of the resulting systems.

Exceptional Electron-Rich Heteroaromatic Pentacycle for Ultralow Band Gap Conjugated Polymers and Photothermal Therapy

Stable redox-active conjugated molecules with exceptional electron-donating abilities are key components for the design and synthesis of ultralow band gap conjugated polymers. While hallmark electron-rich examples such as pentacene derivatives have been thoroughly explored, their poor air stability has hampered their broad incorporation into conjugated polymers for practical applications. Herein, we describe the synthesis of the electron-rich, fused pentacyclic pyrazino[2,3-b:5,6-b']diindolizine (PDIz) motif and detail its optical and redox behavior. The PDIz ring system exhibits a lower oxidation potential and a reduced optical band gap than the isoelectronic pentacene while retaining greater air stability in both solution and the solid state. The enhanced stability and electron density, together with readily installed solubilizing groups and polymerization handles, allow for the use of the PDIz motif in the synthesis of a series of conjugated polymers with band gaps as small as 0.71 eV. The tunable absorbance throughout the biologically relevant near-infrared I and II regions enables the use of these PDIz-based polymers as efficient photothermal therapeutic reagents for laser ablation of cancer cells.

Aromatic heterobicycle-fused porphyrins: impact on aromaticity and excited state electron transfer leading to long-lived charge separation

A new synthetic method to fuse benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoindole to the porphyrin periphery at the β,β-positions has been developed, and its impact on the aromaticity and electronic structures is investigated. Reactivity investigation of the fused benzoimidazo-isoindole component reveals fluorescence quenching of a zinc porphyrin (AMIm-2) upon treatment with a Brønsted acid. The reaction of the zinc porphyrin (AMIm-2) with methyl iodide initiated a new organic transformation, resulting in the ring-opening of isoindole with the formation of an aldehyde and dimethylation of the benzoimidazo component. The fused benzoimidazo-isoindole component acted as a good ligand to bind platinum(ii), forming novel homobimetallic and heterobimetallic porphyrin complexes. The fusion of benzoimidazo-isoindole on the porphyrin ring resulted in bathochromically shifted absorptions and emissions, reflecting the extended conjugation of the porphyrin π-system. Time-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopy revealed stable excited state species of the benzoimidazo-isoindole fused porphyrins. Zinc porphyrin AMIm-2 promoted excited state electron transfer upon coordinating with an electron acceptor, C60, generating a long-lived charge-separated state, in the order of 37.4 μs. The formation of the exceptionally long-lived charge-separated state is attributed to the involvement of both singlet and triplet excited states of AMIm-2, which is rarely reported in porphyrins.

Strong Electronic Communication in Linearly Elongated Rylenes Featuring Tunable Bridges

A modified synthetic pathway towards perylene-perylene dimers and a facile purification method to obtain the regioisomerically pure syn- and anti-isomers are reported. In addition, a novel perylene-naphthalene heterodimer with 30 conjugated π-electron pairs was designed and synthesized on the basis of a previously described precursor and the resulting regioisomers were separated from each other. Thereby, the opto-electronic properties of the linearly elongated chromophores could be investigated regarding the differences in length of their aromatic system and the configuration of the isomers. Further tuning of their energy gaps was realized via protonation and methylation of the dibenzimidazole-bridging unit. Extraordinary red-shifts of the absorption maxima of 62 nm for the methylated and 92 nm for the protonated perylene-perylene anti-isomer could be achieved. Moreover, the maxima for the syn-isomer could be shifted bathochromically by 87 and 113 nm, respectively.

A Novel Imidazophenazine-Based Stimuli Responsive Chemosensor for Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescence Detection of CN–

A fluorescent imidazophenazine-based derivative (S) has been successfully synthesised, and can be used as a chemsensor for relay recognition of CN– in DMSO/H2O (7:3, v/v) solution, which exhibited external stimuli-responsiveness. The sensor immediately responded with obvious colour changes (from red to purple) and fluorescent quenching when CN– was added to the S solution. Its detection limit for CN– is 2.16×10−7 M. In addition, NMR spectroscopy and density function theory calculations were also used to confirm the recognition mechanism. In particular, the fluorescence responding circle could be repeated three times by the sequential addition of CN– and CH3COO– or CN– and HSO4–. Moreover, a CN– detection test paper was prepared using S, providing a convenient method for CN– identification.

C-H Direct Arylated 6H-Indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline Derivative as a Thickness-Dependent Hole-Injection Layer

A novel perfluoro-1,4-phenylenyl 6H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline derivative (TFBIQ) was designed and synthesized by using a C-H direct arylation method. The optoelectrical properties of the obtained TFBIQ were fully characterized by UV/Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and a group of Alq₃ -based green organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Device A, which used 0.5 nm-thick TFBIQ as the interfacial modification layer, exhibited the five best advantages of device performance including a minimum turn-on voltage as low as 3.1 V, a maximum luminescence intensity as high as 26564 cd m^-2 , a highest current density value of 348.9 mA cm^-2 at a voltage of 11 V, the smallest efficiency roll-off, as well as the greatest power efficiency of 1.46 lm W^-1 relative to all of the other tested devices with thicker TFBIQ and also 10 nm-thick MoO₃ as hole-injection layers (HILs). As a promising candidate for an organic HIL material, the as-prepared TFBIQ exhibited a strong thickness effect on the performance of corresponding OLEDs. Furthermore, the theoretical calculated vertical ionization potential of the fluorinated TFBIQ suggests better anti-oxidation stability than that of the non-fluorinated structure.

π-Extended rigid triptycene-trisaroylenimidazoles as electron acceptors

Two soluble isomeric acceptor molecules based on a triptycene core, which is connected to three aroylenimidazole units are described. Due to the inherent threefold axis, the molecules are soluble and thus could be fully photophysically characterized in solution and film. Additionally, the preliminary results of these acceptors in organic photovoltaic devices with two different donor materials are reported.

Pi-Extended Diindole-Fused Azapentacenone: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical and Lithium-Storage Properties

Pi-extended polyaromatics tend to exhibit improved electronic properties with respect to the intrinsic structures. Herein, the rational design of a π-extended diindole-fused diazapentacenone (IP), with a nine-ring-fused core, obtained by applying an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts diacylation synthetic routine, is reported. The chemical structure, physical properties, and morphology of IP were fully characterized. Serving as an organic cathode material for a lithium-ion battery, the as-prepared nanorods of π-extended IP display higher conductivity and superior electrochemical performance than those of the naked diazapentacenone without diindole fusion.

Electronic and Morphological Studies of Conjugated Polymers Incorporating a Disk-Shaped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Unit

As more research findings have shown the correlation between ordering in organic semiconductor thin films and device performance, it is becoming more essential to exercise control of the ordering through structural tuning. Many recent studies have focused on the influence of side chain engineering on polymer packing orientation in thin films. However, the impact of the size and conformation of aromatic surfaces on thin film ordering has not been investigated in great detail. Here we introduce a disk-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon building block with a large π surface, namely, thienoazacoronenes (TACs), as a donor monomer for conjugated polymers. A series of medium bandgap conjugated polymers have been synthesized by copolymerizing TAC with electron donating monomers of varying size. The incorporation of the TAC unit in such semiconducting polymers allows a systematic investigation, both experimentally and theoretically, of the relationships between polymer conformation, electronic structure, thin film morphology, and charge transport properties. Field effect transistors based on these polymers have shown good hole mobilities and photoresponses, proving that TAC is a promising building block for high performance optoelectronic materials.

An asymmetric naphthalimide derivative for n-channel organic field-effect transistors

A novel asymmetric naphthalimide derivative (IZ0) is synthesized and high electron mobility of 0.072 cm²V⁻¹s⁻¹and 0.22 cm²V⁻¹s⁻¹are achieved for IZ0 film and single crystal-based transistors, respectively.
