Highly Active and Dispersed Pd Nanoparticles Stabilized by Lacunary Phosphomolybdate: Synthesis, Characterization, and Liquid Phase Hydrogenation of Levulinic Acid to γ-Valerolactone

In the current scenario, one of the crucial reaction conversions is the synthesis of renewable biofuels and value-added chemicals from the hydrogenation of biomass. Therefore, in the present work, we are proposing aqueous phase conversion of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone via hydrogenation using formic acid as a sustainable green hydrogen source over a sustainable heterogeneous catalyst. The catalyst based on Pd nanoparticles stabilized by lacunary phosphomolybdate (PMo₁₁Pd) was designed for the same and characterized by EDX, FT-IR, ³¹P NMR, powder XRD, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, and HAADF-STEM analyses. A detailed optimization study was done to achieve maximum conversion (95% conversion), using a very small amount of Pd (1.879 × 10^-3 mmol) with notable TON (2585) at 200 °C in 6 h. The regenerated catalyst was found to be workable (reusable) up to three cycles without any change in activity. Also, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed. The catalyst exhibits superior activity against reported catalysts.

Discovery of Polythioplatinate(II) [Pt3S2(SO3)6]10- and Study of Its Solution and Catalytic Properties

We have discovered the first polythioplatinate(II), [Pt^II₃S₂(SO₃)₆]^10- (1), which was synthesized in aqueous basic medium (pH 11) by hydrothermal heating at 150 °C. Polyanion 1 comprises a discrete, triangular assembly of three Pt²⁺ ions linked by two μ₃-sulfido ligands, and their square-planar coordination geometry is completed by two terminal S-bound sulfito ligands. Polyanion 1 was isolated as a hydrated sodium salt, Na₁₀[Pt^II₃(μ₃-S)₂(SO₃)₆]·22H₂O (Na-1), which was characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and elemental analysis, in solution by ¹⁹⁵Pt NMR and atomic absorption spectroscopy, and in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Density functional theory calculations were performed, and the ¹⁹⁵Pt NMR chemical shifts of 1 were computed theoretically and shown to match well with the experimental data. Furthermore, the discrete title polyanion 1 was immobilized on mesoporous SBA-15 support and used as a precatalyst for the hydrogenation of o-xylene.

Discovery of a Neutral 40-PdII-Oxo Molecular Disk, [Pd40O24(OH)16{(CH3)2AsO2}16]: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Catalytic Studies

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of a giant, discrete, and neutral molecular disk, [Pd₄₀O₂₄(OH)₁₆{(CH₃)₂AsO₂}₁₆] (Pd₄₀), comprising a 40-palladium-oxo core that is capped by 16 dimethylarsinate moieties, resulting in a palladium-oxo cluster (POC) with a diameter of ∼2 nm. Pd₄₀, which is the largest known neutral Pd-based oxo cluster, can be isolated either as a discrete species or constituting a 3D H-bonded organic-inorganic framework (HOIF) with a 12-tungstate Keggin ion, [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- or [GeW₁₂O₄₀]^4-. ¹H and ¹³C NMR as well as ¹H-DOSY NMR studies indicate that Pd₄₀ is stable in aqueous solution, which is also confirmed by ESI-MS studies. Pd₄₀ was also immobilized on a mesoporous support (SBA15) followed by the generation of size-controlled Pd nanoparticles (diameter ∼2-6 nm, as based on HR-TEM), leading to an effective heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst for the transformation of various arenes to saturated carbocycles.

Synthesis and characterization of supported stabilized palladium nanoparticles for selective hydrogenation in water at low temperature

Zirconia supported vacant phosphotungstate stabilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd-PW11/ZrO2) were prepared using a simple impregnation and post reduction method, characterized and their efficiency for selective C[double bond, length as m-dash]C hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds explored. The establishment of a hydrogenation strategy at low temperature using water as solvent under mild conditions makes the present system environmentally benign and green. The catalyst shows outstanding activity (96% conversion) with just a small amount of Pd(0) (0.0034 mol%) with high substrate/catalyst ratio (29 177/1), TON (28 010) and TOF (14 005 h-1) for cyclohexene (as a model substrate) hydrogenation. The catalyst was recovered by simple centrifugation and reused for up to five catalytic cycles without alteration in its activity. The present catalyst was found to be viable towards different substrates with excellent activity and TON (18 000 to 28 800). A study on the effect of addenda atom shows that the efficiency of the catalyst can be enhanced greatly by increasing the number of counter protons. This challenging strategy would greatly benefit sustainable development in chemistry as it diminishes the use of organic solvents and offers economic and environmental benefits as water is cheap and non-toxic.

Metallic-Nanoparticle-Based Sensing: Utilization of Mixed-Ligand Monolayers

The last two decades have seen great advancements in fundamental understanding and applications of metallic nanoparticles stabilized by mixed-ligand monolayers. Identifying and controlling the organization of multiple ligands in the nanoparticle monolayer has been studied, and its effect on particle properties has been examined. Mixed-ligand protected particles have shown advantages over monoligand protected particles in fields such as catalysis, self-assembly, imaging, and drug delivery. In this Review, the use of mixed-ligand monolayer protected nanoparticles for sensing applications will be examined. This is the first time this subject is examined as a whole. Mixed-ligand nanoparticle-based sensors are revealed to be divided into four groups, each of which will be discussed. The first group consists of ligands that work cooperatively to improve the sensors' properties. In the second group, multiple ligands are utilized for sensing multiple analytes. The third group combines ligands used for analyte recognition and signal production. In the final group, a sensitive, but unstable, functional ligand is combined with a stabilizing ligand. The Review will conclude by discussing future challenges and potential research directions for this promising subject.

Palladium(II)-Containing Tungstoarsenate(V), [PdII4(As2W15O56)2]16-, and Its Catalytic Properties

We have synthesized and structurally characterized the 4-palladium(II)-containing 30-tungsto-4-arsenate(V), [Pd₄(As₂W₁₅O₅₆)₂]^16- (1), which represents the first palladium(II)-containing tungstoarsenate(V). The title polyanion 1 was prepared by a simple one-pot procedure in aqueous medium and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis, and ¹⁸³W nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies. Polyanion 1 consists of four Pd²⁺ ions that are coordinated in a square-planar geometry to two trilacunary [As₂W₁₅O₅₆]^12- Wells-Dawson fragments resulting in a sandwich-type assembly. Catalytic studies on 1 revealed that it is an efficient catalyst precursor for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of various aryl halides in aqueous and nonaqueous media.

Classical/Non-classical Polyoxometalate Hybrids

Two polyanions [Se^I V₂ Pd^II₄ W^VI₁₄ O₅₆ H]^11- and [Se^I V₄ Pd^II₄ W^VI₂₈ O₁₀₈ H₁₂ ]^12- are the first hybrid polyoxometalates in which classical (Group 5/6 metal based) and non-classical (late transition-metal based) polyoxometalate units are joined. Requiring no supporting groups, this co-condensation of polyoxotungstate and isopolyoxopalladate constituents also provides a logical link between POM-Pd^II coordination complexes and the young subclass of polyoxopalladates. Solid-state, solution, and gas-phase studies suggest interesting specific reactivities for these hybrids and point to several potential derivatives and functionalization strategies.

Palladium(0) Nanoparticle Formation, Stabilization, and Mechanistic Studies: Pd(acac)₂ as a Preferred Precursor, [Bu₄N]₂HPO₄ Stabilizer, plus the Stoichiometry, Kinetics, and Minimal, Four-Step Mechanism of the Palladium Nanoparticle Formation and Subsequent Agglomeration Reactions

Palladium(0) nanoparticles continue to be important in the field of catalysis. However, and despite the many prior reports of Pd(0)n nanoparticles, missing is a study that reports the kinetically controlled formation of Pd(0)n nanoparticles with the simple stabilizer [Bu4N]2HPO4 in an established, balanced formation reaction where the kinetics and mechanism of the nanoparticle-formation reaction are also provided. It is just such studies that are the focus of the present work. Specifically, the present studies reveal that Pd(acac)2, in the presence of 1 equiv of [Bu4N]2HPO4 as stabilizer in propylene carbonate, serves as a preferred precatalyst for the kinetically controlled nucleation following reduction under 40 ± 1 psig initial H2 pressure at 22.0 ± 0.1 °C to yield 7 ± 2 nm palladium(0) nanoparticles. Studies of the balanced stoichiometry of the Pd(0)n nanoparticle-formation reaction shows that 1.0 Pd(acac)2 consumes 1.0 equiv of H2 and produces 1.0 equiv of Pd(0)n while also releasing 2.0 ± 0.2 equiv of acetylacetone. The inexpensive, readily available HPO4(2-) also proved to be as effective a Pd(0)n nanoparticle stabilizer as the more anionic, sterically larger, "Gold Standard" stabilizer P2W15Nb3O62(9-). The kinetics and associated minimal mechanism of formation of the [Bu4N]2HPO4-stabilized Pd(0)n nanoparticles are also provided, arguably the most novel part of the present studies, specifically the four-step mechanism of nucleation (A → B, rate constant k1), autocatalytic surface growth (A + B → 2B, rate constant k2), bimolecular agglomeration (B + B → C, rate constant k3), and secondary autocatalytic surface growth (A + C → 1.5C, rate constant k4), where A is Pd(acac)2, B represents the growing, smaller Pd(0)n nanoparticles, and C represents the larger, most catalytically active Pd(0)n nanoparticles. Additional details on the mechanism and catalytic properties of the resultant Pd(0)n·HPO4(2-) nanoparticles are provided in this work.

Binary Superlattices from {Mo132} Polyoxometalates and Maghemite Nanocrystals: Long-Range Ordering and Fine-Tuning of Dipole Interactions

In the present article, the successful coassembly of spherical 6.2 nm maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanocrystals and giant polyoxometalates (POMs) such as 2.9 nm {Mo132} is demonstrated. To do so, colloidal solutions of oleic acid-capped γ-Fe2O3 and long-chain alkylammonium-encapsulated {Mo132 } dispersed in chloroform are mixed together and supported self-organized binary superlattices are obtained upon the solvent evaporation on immersed substrates. Both electronic microscopy and small angles X-ray scattering data reveal an AB-type structure and an enhanced structuration of the magnetic nanocrystals (MNCs) assembly with POMs in octahedral interstices. Therefore, {Mo132} acts as an efficient binder constituent for improving the nanocrystals ordering in 3D films. Interestingly, in the case of didodecyldimethylammonium (C12)-encapsulated POMs, the long-range ordered binary assemblies are obtained while preserving the nanocrystals magnetic properties due to weak POMs-MNCs interactions. On the other hand, POMs of larger effective diameter can be employed as spacer blocks for MNCs as shown by using {Mo132} capped with dioctadecyldimethylammonium (C18) displaying longer chains. In that case, it is shown that POMs can also be used for fine-tuning the dipolar interactions in γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystal assemblies.

Mechanistic insights into the activation process in electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation by phosphomolybdic acid-stabilised palladium(0) nanoparticles (PdNPs@PMo12)
