Co-precipitation based on layered double hydroxides and anionic surfactants for preconcentration of six benzoylurea insecticides in soft drinks before simultaneous analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography

Layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) modified with anionic surfactants via a co-precipitation method were developed for preconcentrating and simultaneous analysis of six benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The anionic surfactants with different chain lengths, including sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium 1-nonane sulfonate (SNS), and sodium 1-hexane sulfonate monohydrate (SHS) were investigated to improve the extraction efficiency of LDHs. The SDBS-LDHs provided the highest efficiency for the enrichment of the BUs studied. Under the chosen conditions, enrichment factors in the range of 38-69 and detection limits in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 were achieved. Good reproducibilities (RSD < 13.8%) and recoveries (71.4-118.7%) were also obtained. The proposed preconcentration method, used as an in situ procedure offers rapid and simple simultaneous preparation of LDHs and extraction of BUs. The method was successfully applied for residue analysis of BUs in fruit- and flower-derived soft drink samples.

The degradation and metabolism of chlorfluazuron and flonicamid in tea: A risk assessment from tea garden to cup

Degradation and metabolism of chlorfluazuron and flonicamid from tea garden to cup were simultaneously investigated by a modified QuEChERS method coupled with UPLC-MS/MS quantification. The dissipation half-lives of chlorfluazuron, flonicamid, and total flonicamid (the sum of flonicamid and its metabolites TFNG, TFNA, and TFNA-AM) in fresh tea leaves during tea growth were 6.0 d, 4.8 d, and 8.1 d, respectively. TFNG and TFNA were generated during tea growth. After tea processing, the residues of chlorfluazuron, flonicamid, and its metabolites in black tea were higher than those in green tea. The average processing factors of chlorfluazuron, flonicamid, and total flonicamid in black tea were 2.54, 3.02, and 2.87, respectively, while in green tea they were 2.40, 2.93, and 2.79, respectively. TFNG, TFNA, and TFNA-AM were formed rapidly during the drying step. Considering the influence of water content at various processing steps, the average loss rates of chlorfluazuron, flonicamid, and total flonicamid residue from fresh tea leaves to black tea were 16.7%, 33.8%, and 20.7%, respectively, and 29.6%, 14.0% and 18.2%, respectively, in the case of green tea. The highest leaching rates of chlorfluazuron, flonicamid, and total flonicamid during tea brewing were 6.8%, 97.0%, and 97.4%, respectively, in black tea infusion, and 6.0%, 98.9%, and 98.6%, respectively, in green tea infusion. The metabolites, especially TFNG, had a higher leaching rate during tea brewing. The migration of chlorfluazuron from fresh leaves to tea infusion was low, and the migration of flonicamid was high. The RQc and RQa of chlorfluazuron and total flonicamid were less than 1. This result indicates that the potential dietary intake risk of chlorfluazuron from tea is negligible. However, the risk of total flonicamid intake is three times higher than that of chlorfluazuron. There is a potential risk of intake of flonicamid and its metabolites in tea for human consumption.

Dissolvable Mg/Al layered double hydroxides and surfactant as an extractant for trace analysis of benzoylurea insecticides by high performance liquid chromatography

A rapid and simple preconcentration method using dissolvable Mg/Al layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) and high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA) was developed for the analysis of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in water and honey samples. The proposed dissolvable LDHs for the extraction can be prepared in one step by the sequential addition of sodium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, aluminium chloride, and sodium dodecyl sulfate into the sample solution containing the target BUs. The co-precipitate phase was simply obtained after centrifugation, and the phase was then dissolved with formic acid before analysis by HPLC. The developed method provided an enrichment factor of 12.5-23.7. LODs were obtained in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 for deionized water, 0.2-2.0 μg L^-1 for environmental waters, and 0.5-2.0 μg L^-1 for the analyzed honey samples. Good recoveries ranging from 78.4 to 117.8% and 72.7 to 117.9% for water and honey samples, respectively, were obtained.

Determination of the Residue Behavior and Risk Assessment of Chlorfluazuron in Chinese Cabbage, Kale, Lettuce and Cauliflower by UPLC-MS/MS

Chlorfluazuron is used as a highly effective insect growth regulator to control a variety of crop pests. However, residues of this pesticide have been shown to be harmful to human health. To evaluate the residual dissipation pattern and risk for dietary intake of chlorfluazuron in various vegetables, a solid phase extraction-ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was established to analyze chlorfluazuron residues in Chinese cabbage, Chinese kale, Chinese lettuce, and cauliflower. The sample was extracted with acetonitrile and purified using an SPE amino column. The average recovery of the target sample in the analyzed four vegetables was between 75.0% and 104.1%, and the relative standard deviation was between 2.5% and 9.6%. The precision and accuracy of the analysis met the requirements of residue analysis standards. Dissipation kinetic testing of chlorfluazuron in different vegetables showed a half-life of 2.4-12.6 days, with a rapid dissipation rate. The estimated daily intake of the chlorfluazuron was 0.753-1.661 μg/(kg bw·d), and the risk quotient was 0.15-0.35. It showed that chlorfluazuron had a low risk of chronic dietary intake from vegetables in different populations in China. The results of this study has described the degradation rate of chlorfluazuron in four vegetables, evaluated the risk of dietary exposure to Chinese residents. Therefore, it provides supporting data and empirical basis for guiding the reasonable use of chlorfluazuron in vegetable production and in evaluating its dietary intake risk in vegetables.
