Dual aging behaviour in a clay-polymer dispersion

A synthetic and transparent clay removes Microcystis aeruginosa efficiently

Clay-algae flocculation is a promising method to remove harmful algal blooms (HABs) in aquatic ecosystems. Many HAB-generating species, such as Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), a common species in lakes, produce toxins and harm the environment, human health, and the economy. Natural clays, such as bentonite and kaolinite, and modification of these clays have been applied to mitigate HABs by forming large aggregates and settling down. In this study, we aim to examine the impact of laponite, a commercially available smectite clay that is synthetic, transparent, compatible with human tissues, and degradable, on removing HABs. We compare the cell removal efficiencies (RE) of laponite, two natural clays, and their polyaluminum chloride (PAC)-modified versions through clay-algae flocculation experiments. Our results show that the optimum concentrations of laponite, bentonite, kaolinite, PAC-modified bentonite, and PAC-modified kaolinite to remove 80 % of the M. aeruginosa cells from the water column are 0.05 g/L, 2 g/L, 4 g/L, 2 g/L and 0.3 g/L respectively. Therefore, to achieve the same cell removal efficiency, the amount of laponite needed is 40 to 80 times less than bentonite and kaolinite, and 6 times less than PAC-modified kaolinite. We demonstrate that the superior performance of laponite clay is because of its smaller particle size, which increases the encounter rate between cells and clay particles. Furthermore, experiments using water samples from Powderhorn Lake confirmed laponite's effectiveness in mitigating HABs. Our price analysis also suggests that this commercially-available clay, laponite, can be used in the field at a relatively low cost.

Laponite®-From Dispersion to Gel-Structure, Properties, and Applications

Laponite® (LAP) is an intensively studied synthetic clay due to the versatility given by its layered structure, which makes it usable in various applications. This review describes the multifaceted properties and applications of LAP in aqueous dispersions and gel systems. The first sections of the review discuss the LAP structure and the interactions between clay discs in an aqueous medium under different conditions (such as ionic strength, pH, temperature, and the addition of polymers) in order to understand the function of clay in tailoring the properties of the designed material. Additionally, the review explores the aging phenomenon characteristic of LAP aqueous dispersions as well as the development of shake-gels by incorporating LAP. The second part shows the most recent studies on materials containing LAP with possible applicability in the drilling industry, cosmetics or care products industry, and biomedical fields. By elucidating the remarkable versatility and ease of integration of LAP into various matrices, this review underscores its significance as a key ingredient for the creation of next-generation materials with tailored functionalities.

Luminescent lanthanide-containing gelatin/polydextran/laponite nanocomposite double-network hydrogels for processing and sensing applications

Lanthanide-containing nanomaterials have gained significant popularity for their utilization in polymeric networks, enabling the creation of luminescent nanocomposites for advanced applications. In this study, we developed a new type of lanthanide-containing nanocomposite hydrogels by incorporating terbium-containing laponite (Tb3+@Lap) into the networks of polyethyleneimine-modified gelatin/polydextran aldehyde (PG/PDA) through dynamic bonds. The structures and properties of the Tb3+@Lap-containing nanocomposite double-network (ncDN) hydrogels were comprehensively investigated in comparison with the DN hydrogels with a pure polymeric network and the Lap-containing ncDN hydrogels. The PG/PDA/Tb3+@Lap ncDN hydrogels with multiple dynamic bonds (i.e., imine bonds, coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions) exhibited remarkable characteristics of shear-thinning and self-healing, making them suitable for the construction of hydrogel scaffolds on a macroscale using fabrication techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing. Moreover, the PG/PDA/Tb3+@Lap ncDN hydrogels have been demonstrated to act as sensitive and selective luminescent sensors for detecting copper ions. Taken together, a versatile lanthanide-containing ncDN hydrogel platform capable of dynamic features is developed for processing and sensing applications.

Physico-Chemical Properties of Laponite®/Polyethylene-oxide Based Composites

This review aims to provide a literature overview as well as the authors' personal account to the studies of Laponite® (Lap)/Polyethylene-oxide (PEO) based composite materials and their applications. These composites can be prepared over a wide range of their mutual concentrations, they are highly water soluble, and have many useful physico-chemical properties. To the readers' convenience, the contents are subdivided into different sections, related with consideration of PEO properties and its solubility in water, behavior of Lap systems(structure of Lap-platelets, properties of aqueous dispersions of Lap and aging effects in them), analyzing ofproperties LAP/PEO systems, Lap platelets-PEO interactions, adsorption mechanisms, aging effects, aggregation and electrokinetic properties. The different applications of Lap/PEO composites are reviewed. These applications include Lap/PEO based electrolytes for lithium polymer batteries, electrospun nanofibers, environmental, biomedical and biotechnology engineering. Both Lap and PEO are highly biocompatible with living systems and they are non-toxic, non-yellowing, and non-inflammable. Medical applications of Lap/PEO composites in bio-sensing, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cell proliferation, and wound dressings are also discussed.

Destabilization of the Nematic Phase of Clay Nanosheet Suspensions by Polymer Adsorption

Complex aqueous mixtures comprised of swelling clays and hydrosoluble polymers naturally occur in soils and play a major role in pedogenesis. They are also very often used for formulating oil-well drilling fluids, paints, and personal-care products. The suspensions of some natural clays, thanks to their large nanoparticle aspect ratio, spontaneously form nematic liquid-crystalline phases where the particles align parallel to each other, which affects their flow properties. We observed that adding small amounts of hydrosoluble polymers to these clay suspensions destabilizes the nematic phase with respect to the isotropic (disordered) phase. The polymers that we used (poly(ethylene oxide) and dextran) were too small to adopt particle-bridging conformations and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments showed that the structure of the nematic phase is not altered by polymer doping. However, the adsorption isotherm shows that the macromolecules adsorb onto the clay nanosheets, effectively coating them with a polymer layer. Our extension of Onsager's theory for polymer-coated platelets properly captures the experimental phase diagram and shows how the nematic phase destabilization can be due to the polymer adsorbing more on the platelet faces than at the rim. Because the flow properties of the nematic phase are very different from those of the isotropic phase, the presence or absence of the former phase is an important factor to be determined and considered to explain the rheological behavior of these complex systems.

Electrokinetic Behavior of Laponite RD in Aqueous Suspensions Containing Poly(ethylene oxide) and Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide

The aqueous suspensions of Laponite RD (Lap) platelets demonstrate rich phase diagrams. Both poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules competitively adsorb on the surface of Lap, and strong interactions between PEO and CTAB exist. The stability of ternary systems Lap + PEO + CTAB can be finely regulated by changing the balance of these interactions. The electrokinetic technique was used to study 0.065 and 2% wt Lap suspensions in the presence of different amounts of PEO of various molecular masses M_w (400-20,000 g/mol) and CTAB (0-1 mM). For 0.065% wt Lap suspension, the additives of PEO did not affect the position of the isoelectric point (IEP), but the impact of PEO in the regions below or above the IEP was significant, especially for a large M_w. The observed effects were explained, accounting the model for the adsorption of PEO in the form of loops and tails as well as for the changes in the packing balance of CTAB and PEO on the surface of Lap. For 2% wt suspension, the strong effects of M_w on the ζ-potential and aggregation of particles were explained by screening the repulsive double layers by PEO chains, by bridging the Lap particles via PEO molecules, and by the impact of CTAB molecules on the bridging between Lap aggregates.

Polyphosphates can stabilize but also aggregate colloids

Phosphates are well known as dispersants for a variety of colloidal particles. Here however we use rheological measurements to show that high molecular weight polyphosphates (PP) can instead act as a flocculant for LAPONITE® clay platelets. The proposed mechanism is bridging of PP between clay particle edges, leading to highly charged clusters forming a Wigner glass. Dynamic light scattering shows a bimodal cluster size distribution, independent of PP molecular weight, but the highest molecular weight gave the highest viscous and loss moduli for the PP-clay solid. These unique all-inorganic solids may have application in solid-state ionic conducting materials, controlled release fertilizers and biomedical applications.

Microstructure and Soft Glassy Dynamics of an Aqueous Laponite Dispersion

Synthetic hectorite clay Laponite RD/XLG is composed of disk-shaped nanoparticles that acquire dissimilar charges when suspended in an aqueous medium. Owing to their property to spontaneously self-assemble, Laponite is used as a rheology modifier in a variety of commercial water-based products. In particular, an aqueous dispersion of Laponite undergoes a liquid-to-solid transition at about 1 vol % concentration. The evolution of the physical properties as the dispersion transforms to the solid state is reminiscent of physical aging in molecular as well as colloidal glasses. The corresponding soft glassy dynamics of an aqueous Laponite dispersion, including the rheological behavior, has been extensively studied in the literature. In this feature article, we take an overview of recent advances in understanding soft glassy dynamics and various efforts taken to understand the peculiar rheological behavior. Furthermore, the continuously developing microstructure that is responsible for the eventual formation of a soft solid state that supports its own weight against gravity has also been a topic of intense debate and discussion. In particularly, extensive experimental and theoretical studies lead to two types of microstructures for this system: an attractive gel-like or a repulsive glass-like structure. We carefully examine and critically analyze the literature and propose a state (phase) diagram that suggests an aqueous Laponite dispersion to be present in an attractive gel state.

Nanoengineered Colloidal Inks for 3D Bioprinting

Nanoengineered hydrogels offer the potential to design shear-thinning bioinks for three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. Here, we have synthesized colloidal bioinks composed of disk-shaped two-dimensional (2D) nanosilicates (Laponite) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The addition of Laponite reinforces the PEG network and increases viscosity, storage modulus, and network stability. PEG-Laponite hydrogels display shear-thinning and self-recovery characteristics due to rapid internal phase rearrangement. As a result, a range of complex patterns can be printed using PEG-Laponite bioinks. The 3D bioprinted structure has similar mechanical properties compared to the as-casted structure. In addition, encapsulated cells within the PEG-Laponite bioink show high viability after bioprinting. Overall, this study introduces a new class of PEG-Laponite colloidal inks for bioprinting and cell delivery.
