Transition metals-doped g-C3N4 nanostructures as advanced photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based heterostructured photocatalysts have received significant attention for its potential applications in the treatment of wastewater and hydrogen evolution. The utilization of semiconductor materials in heterogeneous photocatalysis has recently received great attention due to their potential and eco-friendly properties. Doping with metal ions plays a crucial role in altering the photochemical characteristics of g-C3N4, effectively enhancing photoabsorption into the visible range and thus improving the photocatalytic performance of doped photocatalysts. As an emerging nanomaterial, nanostructured g-C3N4 represents a visible light-active semiconducting photocatalyst that has attracted significant interest in the photocatalysis field, particularly for its practical water treatment applications. To the best of our knowledge, investigations of functionalized photocatalytic (PC) materials on 3d transition metal-doped g-C3N4 remain unexplored in the existing literature. g-C3N4 based heterohybrid photocatalysts have demonstrated excellent reusability, making them highly promising for wastewater treatment applications. This paper describes the overview of numerous studies conducted on the heterostructured g-C3N4 photocatalysts with various 3d metals. Research studies have revealed that the introduction of element doping with various 3d transition metals (e.g., Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, etc.) into g-C3N4 is an efficient approach to enhance degradation efficacy and boost photocatalytic activity (PCA) of doped g-C3N4 catalysts. Moreover, the significance of g-C3N4 heterostructured nanohybrids is highlighted, particularly in the context of wastewater treatment applications. The study concludes by providing insights into future perspectives in this developing area of research, with a specific focus on the degradation of various organic contaminants.

Layered tin monoselenide as advanced photothermal conversion materials for efficient solar energy-driven water evaporation

Solar energy-driven water evaporation lays a solid foundation for important photothermal applications such as sterilization, seawater desalination, and electricity generation. Due to the strong light-matter coupling, broad absorption wavelength range, and prominent quantum confinement effect, layered tin monoselenide (SnSe) holds a great potential to effectively harness solar irradiation and convert it to heat energy. In this study, SnSe is successfully deposited on a centimeter-scale nickel foam using a facile one-step pulsed-laser deposition approach. Importantly, the maximum evaporation rate of SnSe-coated nickel foam (SnSe@NF) reaches 0.85 kg m^-2 h^-1, which is even 21% larger than that obtained with the commercial super blue coating (0.7 kg m^-2 h^-1) under the same condition. A systematic analysis reveals that its good photothermal conversion capability is attributed to the synergetic effect of multi-scattering-induced light trapping and the optimal trade-off between light absorption and phonon emission. Finally, the SnSe@NF device is further used for seawater evaporation, demonstrating a comparable evaporation rate (0.8 kg m^-2 h^-1) to that of fresh water and good stability over many cycles of usage. In summary, the current contribution depicts a facile one-step scenario for the economical and efficient solar-enabled SnSe@NF evaporation devices. More importantly, an in-depth analysis of the photothermal conversion mechanism underneath the layered materials depicts a fundamental paradigm for the design and application of photothermal devices based on them in the future.

Alloying-assisted phonon engineering of layered BiInSe3@nickel foam for efficient solar-enabled water evaporation

The fresh water crisis has emerged as one of the most urgent bottlenecks hindering the rapid development of modern industry and society. Solar energy-driven water evaporation represents a potential green and sustainable solution to address this issue. Herein, for the first time, centimeter-scale BiInSe₃-coated nickel foam (BiInSe₃@NF) as an efficient solar-enabled evaporator was successfully achieved and exploited for solar energy-driven water evaporation. Benefitting from multiple scattering-induced light trapping of the rough substrate, strong light-matter interaction and intermediate band (IB)-induced efficient phonon emission of BiInSe₃, the BiInSe₃@NF device achieved a high evaporation rate of 0.83 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1 sun irradiation, which is 2.5 times that of pure water. These figures-of-merit are superior to recently reported state-of-the-art photothermal conversion materials, such as black titania, plasmonic assembly and carbon black. In addition, superior stability over a period of 60 days was demonstrated. In summary, the current contribution depicts a facile scenario for design, production and application of an economical and efficient solar-enabled BiInSe₃@NF evaporator. More importantly, the phonon engineering strategy based on alloying induced IB states can be readily applied to other analogous van der Waals materials and a series of superior vdWM alloys toward photothermal applications can be expected in the near future.

One-Pot Hybrid SnO2 /Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanocomposite Formation through Pulsed Laser Irradiation

The localized in situ formation of tin dioxide (SnO₂ ) nanoparticles embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films is presented. This is achieved by the photoinduced conversion of the tin acetate precursor included in polymeric films, through controlled UV or visible pulsed laser irradiation at λ=355 and 532 nm, respectively. The evolution of the formation of nanoparticles is followed by UV/Vis spectroscopy and shows that their growth is affected in different ways by the laser pulses at the two applied wavelengths. This, in combination with electron microscopy analysis, reveals that, depending on the irradiation wavelength, the size of the nanoparticles in the final nanocomposites differs. This difference is attributed to distinct mechanistic pathways that lead to the synthesis of small nanoparticles (from 1.5 to 4.5 nm) at λ=355 nm, whereas bigger ones (from 5 to 16 nm) are formed at λ=532 nm. At the same time, structural studies with both X-ray and electron diffraction measurements demonstrate the crystallinity of SnO₂ nanoparticles in both cases, whereas XPS analysis confirms the light-induced oxidation of tin acetate into SnO₂ . Taken all together, it is demonstrated that the pulsed laser irradiation at λ=355 and 532 nm leads to the formation of SnO₂ nanoparticles with defined features highly dispersed in PMMA solid matrices.
