Recent synthetic strategies of small heterocyclic organic molecules with optoelectronic applications: a review

Over the past few years, there have been tremendous developments in the design and synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials with appealing applications in device fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes, superconductors, organic lasers, organic field-effect transistors, clean energy-producing organic solar cells, etc. There is an increasing demand for the synthesis of green, highly efficient organic optoelectronic materials to cope with the issue of efficiency roll-off in organic semiconductor-based devices. This review systematically summarized the recent progress in the design and synthesis of small organic molecules having promising optoelectronic properties for their potential applications in optoelectronic devices during the last 10-year range (2010-early 2021).

Fusing perylene diimide with helicenes

Incorporating perylene diimide (PDI) units into helicene structures has become a useful strategy for giving access to non-planar electron acceptors as well as a method of creating molecules with unique and intriguing chiroptical properties. This minireview describes this fusion of PDIs with helicenes.

Extended π-Conjugation and Structural Planarity Effects of Symmetrical D-π-A-π-D Naphthalene and Perylene Diimide Semiconductors on n-type Electrical Properties

A series of donor-π-acceptor-π-donor (D-π-A-π-D) compounds based on naphthalendiimide (NDI) and perylenediimide (PDI) central cores combined with triphenylamine and phenylcarbazole donor groups have been synthesized, characterized and tested in top-contact/bottom gate organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The results showed high electron mobilities, up to 0.3 cm2  V-1  s-1 , in the case of NDI derivatives and moderate values of around 10-3  cm2  V-1  s-1 for PDI-based semiconductors. Quantum chemical calculations were performed in order to support the experimental data. The results suggest that adequate molecular characteristics and larger crystalline domains in NDI vs. PDI semiconducting films may be the reasons behind the enhanced electrical properties of NDI derivatives. Furthermore, when the lateral donor substituents are triphenylamine groups, the mobilities were slightly higher in comparison to phenylcarbazole donor groups due to an improved electron-donating character. Other characterization techniques, such as AFM, X-ray diffraction or spectroelectrochemistry, among others, have been performed to analyze supramolecular order, charge carriers' nature and stability, parameters closely related to charge transport characteristics.

Biasing Divergent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oxidation Pathway by Solvent-Free Mechanochemistry

Precise control in reaction selectivity is the goal in modern organic synthesis, and it has been widely studied throughout the synthetic community. In comparison, control of divergent reactivity of a given reagent under different reaction conditions is relatively less explored aspect of chemical selectivity. We herein report an unusual reaction between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and periodic acid H₅IO₆ (1), where the product outcome is dictated by the choice of reaction conditions. That is, reactions under solution-based condition give preferentially C-H iodination products, while reactions under solvent-free mechanochemical condition provide C-H oxidation quinone products. Control experiments further indicated that the iodination product is not a reaction intermediate toward the oxidation product and vice versa. Mechanistic studies unveiled an in situ crystalline-to-crystalline phase change in 2 during ball-milling treatment, where we assigned it as a polymeric hydrogen-bond network of 1. We believe that this polymeric crystalline phase shields the more embedded electrophilic I═O group of 1 from C-H iodination and bias a divergent C-H oxidation pathway (with I═O) in the solid state. Collectively, this work demonstrates that mechanochemistry can be employed to completely switch a reaction pathway and unmask hidden reactivity of chemical reagents.

Electron-Deficient Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon via One-Pot Annulative π-Extension of Perylene Diimide

The synthesis of a class of contorted electron-deficient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been achieved by a one-pot bay annulation of perylene diimide involving a mild Suzuki coupling and subsequent air-mediated, ambient-light-induced photocyclization. X-ray crystallography unambiguously confirmed the contorted PAH structure bearing four imide groups. The photophysical and electronic properties of these contorted PAHs were also analyzed, showing a high fluorescence quantum yield of 86% and moderate electron mobility of 0.017 cm² V^-1 s^-1.

Assembling of Perylene, Naphthalene, and Pyromellitic Diimide-Based Materials and Their Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

π-conjugated aromatic diimides with chemical stability, heat resistance, and redox activity have attracted more attention due to their excellent fluorescence quantum yield in solution. The planar perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives generally have aggregation-induced emission quenching in the solid state, while the cyclic trimers based on pyromellitic diimides (PMDIs), naphthalene diimides (NDIs), and PDIs can increase the fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state and have large two-photon absorption cross section, which can be used as excellent nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Therefore, this paper will study the effects of multiple assembly modes of the three monomers on the NLO responses of materials. It was found that the assembly modes of 2PMDI-1NDI and 2NDI-1PDI exhibit larger third-order NLO response (γ) values, which was due to the larger conjugate surface of PDI effectively reducing the energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO. Compared with other assembly methods, 2PMDI-1NDI and 2NDI-1PDI were conducive to causing redshifts (150 nm) in the absorption spectrum. Therefore, the larger conjugate surface of PDI and the assembly mode of the isosceles triangle were more favorable for intramolecular charge transfer, thus improving its NLO properties.

Influence of the CH/B replacement on the Reactivity of Boranthrene and Related Compounds

The influence of the replacement of CH groups by boron atoms on the reactivity of planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been explored by means of computational tools. To this end, [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions involving anthracene and neutral boranthrene with different dienophiles such as ethylene, acetylene, and CO₂ have been compared. In addition, the influence of additional fused aromatic rings (pentacene or borapentacene) on the reactivity of these species has been also explored. It was found that the B-doped systems are systematically much more reactive than their all-carbon counterparts from both kinetic and thermodynamic points of view. The observed trends in reactivity are quantitatively analyzed in detail using state-of-the-art methods, namely, the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis method. Our calculations reveal the importance of molecular orbital interactions as the key factor responsible for the enhanced reactivity of the B-doped systems.

Twisted Molecular Nanoribbons with up to 53 Linearly-Fused Rings

The synthesis of three molecular nanoribbons with a twisted aromatic framework is described. The largest one shows a 53 linearly fused rings backbone (12.9 nm) and 322 conjugated atoms in its aromatic core (C₂₉₆N₂₄S₂). This new family of nanoribbons shows extremely high molar absorptivities, reaching 986 100 M^-1 cm^-1, and red-emitting properties.

Unlocking the Remarkable Influence of Intramolecular Group Rotation for Third-order Nonlinear Optical Properties

This work exposes for the first time the remarkable influence of intramolecular group rotation on third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) performance. In order to prove the role of group rotation, we designed and synthesized two photo-response compounds tetramethyl 5,5'-(((diazene-1,2-diylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy))bis(methylene))diisophthalate (1) and 5,5'-(((diazene-1,2-diylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy))bis(methylene))diisophthalic acid (2) and investigated their NLO performance under different substituent (benzyloxy group) rotation states. 1 and 2 have dynamic benzyloxy group rotation in dilute solution and shows reverse saturated absorption (RSA). When the benzyloxy group rotation of 1 and 2 was restricted by PMMA, their NLO performance not only converted into saturated absorption (SA) and NLO refraction behaviours, but also hardly changed after isomerization. Interestingly, we also restricted the benzyloxy group rotation in solution to a certain extent through photo-induced trans→cis isomerization, and found that the NLO performances of cis isomers of 1 and 2 exhibit SA and positive refraction and are similar to those of 1-PMMA and 2-PMMA. This work provides a new exploratory method for studying the influencing factors of third-order NLO performance.

Enhancement of one- and two-photon absorption and visualization of intramolecular charge transfer of pyrenyl-contained derivatives

To further improve the pyrenyl-contained derivatives two-photon absorption (TPA) and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, three steps of optimization are employed based on experimental molecule PCVS-B: heteroatomic substitution, exchanging the position of double bonds and adding a branch. The contributions of π electrons to localized orbital locators and Mayer bond orders (LOL-π and I_AB^π) show that the second step can enhance the chemical interaction between pyrenyl and the branched-chain. Two visual methods of charge density difference (CDD) and transition density matrix (TDM) are combined to intuitively analyze the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process of one (two) photon absorption; results show that both following two steps can increase the degree of ICT on the conjugated plane of the pyrenyl. The sum over state (SOS) model was used to find out the dominant two-photon transition process. The difference between the dipole moments obtained by the McRae equation is applied to the three-state model, revealing the inherent law of the second static hyperpolarizability.

The Covalent and Coordination Co-Driven Assembly of Supramolecular Octahedral Cages with Controllable Degree of Distortion

Discovering and constructing novel and fancy structures is the goal of many supramolecular chemists. In this work, we propose an assembly strategy based on the synergistic effect of coordination and covalent interactions to construct a set of octahedral supramolecular cages and adjust their degree of distortion. Our strategy innovatively utilizes the addition of sulfur atoms of a metal sulfide synthon, [Et₄N][Tp*WS₃] (A), to an alkynyl group of a pyridine-containing linker, resulting in a novel vertex with low symmetry, and of Cu(I) ions. By adjusting the length of the linker and the position of the reactive alkynyl group, the control of the deformation degree of the octahedral cages can be realized. These supramolecular cages exhibit enhanced third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. The results offer a powerful strategy to construct novel distorted cage structures as well as control the degree of distortion of supramolecular geometries.

Understanding the reactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds

This perspective article summarizes recent applications of the combination of the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis methods to the study of the reactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds such as cycloparaphenylenes, fullerenes and doped systems. To this end, we have selected representative examples to highlight the usefulness of this relatively novel computational approach to gain quantitative insight into the factors controlling the so far not fully understood reactivity of these species. Issues such as the influence of the size and curvature of the system on the reactivity are covered herein, which is crucial for the rational design of novel compounds with tuneable applications in different fields such as materials science or medicinal chemistry.

Synthesis, self-assembly and nonlinear optical activity of selenium-annulated perylene diimide

A novel Se-annulated perylene diimide derivative tethered with polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles (POSS-2SePDI-POSS) was designed and prepared. The introduction of selenium atoms endows POSS-2SePDI-POSS with significant fluorescence quenching but enhanced excited-state absorption. As a result, POSS-2SePDI-POSS exhibits a distinct reverse saturable absorption characteristic, suggesting its potential application in optical limiting.

Anthracene derivatives as broadband nonlinear optical materials: nonlinear absorption and excited-state dynamics analysis

Two anthracene derivatives, AN-1 and AN-2, with different π-bridge lengths were designed and synthesized to investigate their optical nonlinearities. The nonlinear absorption (NLA) properties of both derivatives were measured via the femtosecond Z-scan technique with the wavelength range from 532 nm to 800 nm. The reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of both compounds results from two-photon absorption induced excited-state absorption (TPA-ESA). At all wavelengths, the reverse saturable absorption of AN-2 is superior to that of AN-1 due to a better molecular planarity for AN-2. Compared with the results of AN-1, the two-photon absorption coefficient of AN-2 can be increased by nearly 8 times (from 0.182 × 10⁻² cm GW⁻¹ for AN-1 to 1.42 × 10⁻² cm GW⁻¹ for AN-2) at 600 nm by extending the π-bridge. The evolution of femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectra reveals the relaxation process from the singlet local excited-state (LES) to charge transfer state (CTS) for both compounds. The results imply that anthracene derivatives may be potential candidates for applications in future laser photonics.

Expanding the π-bridge to adjust the molecular planarity via increasing the amount of ethylene can modulate the nonlinear optical response.

"Seeing" and Controlling Photoisomerization by (Z)-/(E)-Isomers with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics

Efficient photoisomerization of chromophores is important in living systems, and structural constraints of protein pocket on chromophores are the probable reason for moving their dynamic reaction equilibrium forward. On the other hand, photochemical reaction to switch a molecule from one isomer to the other with different geometry and property in a high yield will continue to play a vital role in the synthetic chemistry and material science. Because of the important role of efficient photoisomerization, a biomimetic approach for "seeing" and controlling the photoisomerization is developed by using the technology of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with supramolecular chemistry. It is revealed that a (Z)-isomer of a 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone-containing tetraphenylethene (TPE-UPy) can be photoisomerized into supramolecular polymer form of its (E)-counterpart in chloroform in a high reaction yield of 68.1%. The yield is further enhanced to 100% in THF as aggregates of supramolecular polymers of (E)-TPE-UPy are formed, which completely inhibits the reverse photoreaction to form (Z)-TPE-UPy. In chloroform with organic acid, a mixture of equal amounts of (E)- and (Z)-isomers was obtained due to the disruption of the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The AIE characteristics of the isomers allow us to directly "see" the "turn-on" photoisomerization process by distinct fluorescence color changes, and the photoisomerization observed here may enable the development of a promising generation of optical power limiting materials.

A systematic study of the effects of thionation in naphthalene dimide derivatives to tune their nonlinear optical properties

In the present study, the number and position of sulfur atoms on naphthalene diimide (NDI) is systematically investigated to tune its nonlinear optical (NLO) response properties. Our DFT calculations for third-order polarizability (γ) show that the thionation significantly influences the nonlinear optical property of NDI as it is seen among its several designed derivatives (NDI-1 to NDI-10). The smallest and the largest γ_zzzz amplitudes are 503.49 × 10^-36 and 1299.5 × 10^-36 esu for NDI-1 (having tetraone group) and NDI-10 (having tetrathione group), respectively. The increase in γ_zzzz amplitude for NDI-10 is 796 × 10^-36 esu, which is ∼150% from the γ_zzzz amplitude of NDI-1. A comparison of the γ_zzzz amplitudes of our designed derivatives are made with para-nitroaniline i.e. a prototype NLO molecule. The γ_zzzz amplitude of pNA is found to be 42.64 × 10^-36 esu at the same B3LYP/DZVP2 level of theory. Using two-level model, the origin of larger γ_zzzz amplitudes is traced in lower transition energy of NDI-10. Furthermore, the calculation of vertical ionization potentials (VIPs) shows that the thionation does not affect the stability of designed derivatives, where a slight difference of 0.06 eV is seen between the VIPs of NDI-1 (6.63 eV) and NDI-10 (6.57 eV). Thus, a systematic comparison of the third-order polarizability and other electro-optical properties of our designed derivatives shows that our derivative systems possess good potential for their practical realization in the field of optical and NLO materials.

Tunable Aggregation-Induced Emission Nanoparticles by Varying Isolation Groups in Perylene Diimide Derivatives and Application in Three-Photon Fluorescence Bioimaging

The development of fluorogens with deep-red emission is one of the hottest topics of investigation in the field of bio/chemosensors and bioimaging. Herein, the tunable fluorescence of perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives was achieved by the incorporation of varied isolation groups linked on the PDI core. With the enlarged sizes of isolation groups, the conversion from aggregation caused quenching to aggregation-induced emission was obtained in their fluorescence variations from solutions to nanoparticles, as the result of the efficient inhibition of π-π stacking by the larger isolation groups. Accordingly, DCzPDI bearing 1,3-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene as the biggest isolation group exhibited the bright deep-red emission in the aggregated state with a quantum yield of 12.3%. Combined with the three-photon excited fluorescence microscopy (3PFM) technology, through-skull 3PFM imaging of mouse cerebral vasculature can be realized by DCzPDI nanoparticles with good biocompatibility, and the penetration depth can be as deep as 450 μm.

Aggregation-induced emission and the working mechanism of 1-benzoyl and 1-benzyl pyrene derivatives

Over the past decade, research studies on solid-state luminescent materials featuring aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have achieved great success. It has been proved that lots of planar ACQ (aggregation-caused quenching) chromophores can be converted to AIE luminogens (AIEgens) by combining with an AIE-active unit such as tetraphenylethene (TPE). In this work, we present a new method to create AIE luminogens just by introducing benzoyl or benzyl to a planar chromophore, pyrene. The generated 1-benzoyl and 1-benzyl pyrene derivatives exhibit weak emission when molecularly dissolved in good solvents but strong emission from pyrene dimers when aggregated in poor solvent or the solid state. Their crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations are performed to depict the working mechanism of these new AIEgens. The results show that the structural rigidification of these 1-benzoyl pyrene derivatives is the major cause for their AIE effect. This new AIE system along with a clear working mechanism will contribute to the development of AIE-related functional materials and theories.

New perylene diimide derivatives: stable red emission, adjustable property from ACQ to AIE, and good device performance with an EQE value of 4.93

Perylene diimide (PDI) derivatives, due to their special opto-electronic property, have been successfully utilized in organic field-effect transistor (OFET), solar cells, and as non-fullerene acceptor and others, while few cases in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, six perylene bisimide-based red emitters, N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1-([1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (STPH), N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1,7-bis([1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (DTPH), N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1-(5'-phenyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-4-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (STRPH), N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1,7-bis(5'-phenyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-4-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (DTRPH), N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1-(4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (STTPE) and N,N'-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-1,7-bis(4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-diimide (DTTPE), with the excellent chemical, thermal and photo-chemical stability, are synthesized through the convenient Suzuki coupling reaction, in which, the fluorescent properties can be modified easily from ACQ to AIE by just simply changing the bulky volume of the introduced aromatic substituents. After being fabricated into organic light-emitting diodes, STRPH exhibits the best performance with the maximum luminescence, power efficiency, current efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 1,948 cd m^-2, 2.04 lm W^-1, 5.85 cd A^-1, 4.93% at Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.56, 0.34), as the result of the high efficient energy transfer and good energy match achieved in the device.

A supramolecular red to near-infrared fluorescent probe for the detection of drugs in urine

A host–guest complex based on a newly designed and synthesized cationic perylene dye and cucurbit[8]uril exhibits red-NIR emission, high affinity and stability, and large Stokes shift. It can serve as a red-NIR fluorescent displacement probe for the detection of drugs in urine.

Pyrene Molecular Orbital Shuffle-Controlling Excited State and Redox Properties by Changing the Nature of the Frontier Orbitals

We show that by judicious choice of substituents at the 2- and 7-positions of pyrene, the frontier orbital order of pyrene can be modified, giving enhanced control over the nature and properties of the photoexcited states and the redox potentials. Specifically, we introduced a julolidine-like moiety and Bmes₂ (mes=2,4,6-Me₃ C₆ H₂ ) as very strong donor (D) and acceptor (A), respectively, giving 2,7-D-π-D- and unsymmetric 2,7-D-π-A-pyrene derivatives, in which the donor destabilizes the HOMO-1 and the acceptor stabilizes the LUMO+1 of the pyrene core. Consequently, for 2,7-substituted pyrene derivatives, unusual properties are obtained. For example, very large bathochromic shifts were observed for all of our compounds, and unprecedented green light emission occurs for the D/D system. In addition, very high radiative rate constants in solution and in the solid state were recorded for the D-π-D- and D-π-A-substituted compounds. All compounds show reversible one-electron oxidations, and Jul₂ Pyr exhibits a second oxidation, with the largest potential splitting (ΔE=440 mV) thus far reported for 2,7-substituted pyrenes. Spectroelectrochemical measurements confirm an unexpectedly strong coupling between the 2,7-substituents in our pyrene derivatives.

Comparison of the Optical and Electrochemical Properties of Bi(perylene diimide)s Linked through Ortho and Bay Positions

The Ullmann homocoupling of 2-bromo-perylene diimides (PDIs) gave [2,2'-biperylene]-3,4:9,10:3',4':9',10'-tetrakis(dicarboximide)s, 2,2'-bi(PDI)s, and the Suzuki coupling of a PDI-2-boronic ester and a 1-bromo-PDI gave a [1,2'-biperylene]-3,4:9,10:3',4':9',10'-tetrakis(dicarboximide), 1,2'-bi(PDI). These were compared with [1,1'-biperylene]-3,4:9,10:3',4':9',10'-tetrakis(dicarboximide)s, 1,1'-bi(PDI)s. Solution absorption spectra suggest that the PDIs in 2,2'-bi(PDI)s are more planar and less strongly coupled than those in 1,1'-bi(PDI)s, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations. 2,2'-Bi(PDI)s are less easily reduced than 1,1'- and 1,2'-bi(PDI)s by ca. 70-90 mV. Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells incorporating a 2,2'-bi(PDI) acceptor behaved similarly to those employing its 1,1'-bi(PDI) analogue.

Intracavity folding of a perylene dye affords a high-affinity complex with cucurbit[8]uril

We have designed a fluorescent perylene dye with two aromatic units for intracavity folding to afford a high-affinity complex with cucurbit[8]uril. The high affinity allows the complex to act as a fluorescent probe for detection of strong binding guests with nanomolar sensitivity.

Nonlinear Optical Materials for the Smart Filtering of Optical Radiation

The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.
