Abstract
Organic compounds with 1,3-diketone or 3-amino enone functional groups are extremely important as they can be converted into a plethora of carbo- or heterocyclic derivatives or can be used as ligands in the formation of metal complexes. Here, we have achieved the preparation of a series of non-symmetrical β-ketoenamines (O,N,N proligand) of the type (4-MeOC6H4)C(=O)CH=C(R)NH(Q) obtained through the Schiff base condensation of 1,3-diketones (1-anisoylacetone, 1-anisyl-3-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3-propanedione, and 1-anisyl-3-(4,4,4-trifluorotolyl)-1,3-propanedione) functionalized with electron donor and electron-withdrawing substituents and 8-aminoquinoline (R = CH3, 4-C6H4CN, 4-C6H4CF3; Q = C9H7N). Schiff base ketoimines with a pendant quinolyl moiety were isolated as single regioisomers in yields of 22-56% and characterized with FT-IR, 1H NMR, and UV-visible spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography, which allowed for the elucidation of the nature of the isolated regioisomers. The regioselectivity of the condensation of electronically unsymmetrical 1,3-diaryl-1,3-diketones with 8-aminoquinoline was studied by 1H NMR, providing regioisomer ratios of ~3:1 and ~2:1 in the case of CN and CF3 substituents, respectively. The electronic effects correlate well with the difference between the Hammett σ+ coefficients of the two para substituents on the aryl rings.

Abstract
In this paper, a new tridentate Schiff base ligand (L) with nitrogen donor atoms and its cadmium(II) complexes with the general formula of CdLX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, I-, SCN-, N3 -, NO3 -) have been synthesized and characterized by physical and spectral (FT/IR, UV-Vis, Mass, and 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopies) methods. Also nano-structured cadmium chloride and bromide complexes were synthesized by sonochemical method and then used to prepare nanostructured cadmium oxide confirmed by XRD and SEM techniques. Thermal behavior of the compounds was studied in the temperature range of 25 to 900 °C under N2 atmosphere at a heating rate of 20 °C/ min. Moreover, thermo-kinetic activation parameters of thermal decomposition steps were calculated according to the Coats-Redfern relationship. Antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds against two gram-positive and two gram-negative bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and two fungi of Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were investigated by well diffusion method. SEM technique was used to monitor the morphological changes of the bacteria treated with the compounds. The 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods were used to evaluate the antioxidant ability of the ligand and its cadmium(II) complexes. In final, the cytotoxicity properties of the ligand and some cadmium(II) complexes against PC3 cancer cells were evaluated by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) bioassay and nitric oxide (NO) level measurement. The morphological changes of prostate cancer (PC3) cells due to treatment with the ligand and its complexes confirmed their anticancer effectiveness.

Abstract
A combination of different types of redox-active systems in one molecule makes it possible to create coordination compounds with extended redox abilities, combining molecular and electronic structures determined by the features of intra- and intermolecular interactions between such redox-active centres. This review summarizes and analyses information from the literature, published mainly from 2000 to the present, on the methods of preparation, the molecular and electronic structure of mixed-ligand coordination compounds based on redox-active ligands of the o-benzoquinone type and ferrocenes, ferrocene-containing ligands, the features of their redox properties, and some chemical behaviour.

Abstract
We have recently reported a series of neutral square planar tridentate Schiff base (L) complexes of the general formula [(L)M(py)], showing relatively high first-order hyperpolarizabilities and NLO redox switching behavior. In the present study, new members of this family of compounds have been prepared with the objective to investigate their potential as building blocks in the on-demand construction of D-π-A push–pull systems. Namely, ternary nickel(II) building blocks of general formula [(LA/D)Ni(4-pyX)] (4–7), where LA/D stands for an electron accepting or donating dianionic O,N,O-tridentate Schiff base ligand resulting from the monocondensation of 2-aminophenol or its 4-substituted nitro derivative and β-diketones R-C(=O)CH2C(=O)CH3 (R = methyl, anisyl, ferrocenyl), and 4-pyX is 4-iodopyridine or 4-ethynylpyridine, were synthesized and isolated in 60–78% yields. Unexpectedly, the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between the 4-iodopyridine derivative 6 and 4-ethynylpyridine led to the formation of the bis(4-pyridyl) acetylene bridged centrosymmetric dimer [{(LD)Ni}2(µ2-py-C≡C-py)] (8). Complexes 4–8 were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and computational methods. In each compound, the four-coordinate Ni(II) metal ion adopts a square planar geometry with two nitrogen and two oxygen atoms as donors occupying trans positions. In 8, the Ni…Ni separation is of 13.62(14) Å. Experimental results were proved and explained theoretically exploiting Density Functional Theory calculations.

Abstract
A series of new β-ketoimines containing a ferrocene moiety and their BF2 complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The solvatochromism of the β-ketoimines was studied, putting in evidence a redshift with increasing solvent polarity. This positive solvatochromism can be attributed to a more polarized excited state compared with the ground state, due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transitions. The β-ketoimines exhibited weak emission, attributable to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomenon. This ESIPT effect is suppressed upon restriction of the keto-enamine tautomerism, induced upon addition of BF3 ⋅OEt2 , which afforded the related BF2 complexes, characterized by an enhancement of the fluorescence through the ICT effect. Both the β-ketoimines and BF2 complexes exhibited significant aggregation-induced emission behavior in mixtures of CH3 CN/H2 O, due to restriction of intramolecular rotation in the aggregated state. The frontier molecular orbital levels, ground- and excited-state dipole moments (μg and μe ), and the origin of electronic absorption spectra were studied by time-dependent DFT calculations. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were determined by the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation technique. The μβ1907 values of the β-ketoimines increased upon the formation of the related BF2 complexes, mainly due to an enhancement of the ground-state dipole moment. The results presented here reveal that some of these novel compounds are excellent multifunctional candidates for NLO and luminescence applications.

Abstract
The synthesis of novel redox active ambiphilic ligands L1-L3 and their coordination chemistry to first-row late transition metal halides (M = Co and Ni) is reported. The heterocyclic carbocation scaffolds act as Lewis acid moieties while the pyridine anchor acts as the coordinating Lewis base. The high synthetic tunability of this ligand scaffold allows for control of its rigidity and electronic properties. Anion exchange and coordination of a chloride anion to the metal center was observed resulting in the formation of [MCl3]- metallate. Upon coordination to the pyridine anchor, the metallate centers adopt a canonical tetrahedral geometry, resulting in an overall neutral complex best described as a zwitterionic metallate trichloride bound to a cationic ligand. Characterization techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy were employed to better understand the structural and chemical properties of the ligands and metal complexes. A possible weak interaction between one of the chlorides and the carbenium moiety in the ligand is observed in crystals of both of the Co(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes with ligand L1. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support that this electrostatic interaction for complexes 2a and 2b exists only in the solid state.

Solid-State Nonlinear Optical Properties of Mononuclear Copper(II) Complexes with Chiral Tridentate and Tetradentate Schiff Base Ligands. MATERIALS 2019; 12:ma12213595. [PMID: 31683804 PMCID: PMC6862439 DOI: 10.3390/ma12213595] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/08/2019] [Revised: 10/28/2019] [Accepted: 10/29/2019] [Indexed: 01/04/2023]
Abstract
Salen-type metal complexes have been actively studied for their nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, and push-pull compounds with charge asymmetry generated by electron releasing and withdrawing groups have shown promising results. As a continuation of our research in this field and aiming at solid-state features, herein we report on the synthesis of mononuclear copper(II) derivatives bearing either tridentate N2O Schiff bases L(a−c)− and pyridine as the forth ancillary ligand, [Cu(La−c)(py)](ClO4) (1a–c), or unsymmetrically-substituted push-pull tetradentate N2O2 Schiff base ligands, [Cu(5-A-5′-D-saldpen/chxn)] (2a–c), both derived from 5-substituted salicylaldehydes (sal) and the diamines (1R,2R)-1,2-diphenylethanediamine (dpen) and (1S,2S)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (chxn). All compounds were characterized through elemental analysis, infrared and UV/visible spectroscopies, and mass spectrometry in order to guarantee their purity and assess their charge transfer properties. The structures of 1a–c were determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The geometries of cations of 1a–c and of molecules 2a–c were optimized through DFT calculations. The solid-state NLO behavior was measured by the Kurtz–Perry powder technique @1.907 µm. All chiral derivatives possess non-zero quadratic electric susceptibility (χ(2)) and an efficiency of about 0.15–0.45 times that of standard urea.

Abstract
The effect of the coordination of a Ni(II) ion on the electronic and magnetic properties of the ligand salophen were experimentally and theoretically evaluated. The complex [Ni(salophen)] was synthesized and characterized through FTIR and an elemental analysis. Spectral data obtained using DMSO as a solvent showed that the ligand absorption profile was significantly disturbed after the coordination of the metal atom. In addition to a redshift of the salophen ligand absorption bands, mainly composed by π → π∗electronic transitions, additional bands of around 470 nm were observed, resulting in a partial metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Furthermore, a significant increment of its band intensities was observed, favoring a more intense absorption in a broader range of the visible spectrum, which is a desired characteristic for applications in the field of organic electronics. This finding is related to an increment of the planarity and consequent electron delocalization of the macrocycle in the complex, which was estimated by the calculation of the current strengths at the PBE0/cc-pVTZ (Dyall.v3z for Ni(II)) level.
