Homoleptic Rare-Earth-Metal Sandwiches with Dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraene Dianions

A family of rare-earth complexes [RE(III) = Y, La, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Er] with doubly reduced dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraene (DBCOT) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that all products of the [RE(DBCOT)(THF)4][RE(DBCOT)2] composition consist of the anionic sandwich [RE(DBCOT)2]- and the cationic counterpart [RE(DBCOT)(THF)4]+. Within the sandwich, two elongated π decks are slightly bent toward the metal center (avg. 7.3°) with a rotation angle of 35.9-37.6°. The RE(III) ion is entrapped between the central eight-membered rings of DBCOT2- in a η8 fashion. The trends in the RE-COT bond lengths are consistent with the variations of the ionic radii of RE(III) centers. The 1H NMR spectra of the diamagnetic Y(III) and La(III) analogues illustrate the distinct solution behavior for the cationic and anionic parts in this series. Magnetic measurements for the Dy analogue reveal single-molecule magnetism, which was rationalized by considering the effect of crystal-field splitting for both building units analyzed by electronic structure calculations.

It's not just the size that matters: crystal engineering of lanthanide-based coordination polymers

Synthesis and characterization of Lewis base free coordination polymers of selected lanthanides are presented. For this purpose, the substituted CotTIPS ligand (CotTIPS = 1,4-bis-triisopropylsilyl-cyclo-octatetraendiide) was used to synthesize homoleptic, anionic multidecker compounds of the type [K{LnIII(ɳ8-CotTIPS)2}]n. Depending on the solvent used for crystallization and the ionic radii of the lanthanide cations, three different categories of one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers were obtained in the solid state. For the early lanthanides La and Ce a unique helical conformation was obtained by crystallization from toluene, while the ionic radius of Pr seems to be a turning point towards the crystallization of zigzag polymers. For Er a third structural motif, a trapezoidal wave polymer was observed. Additionally, the zigzag polymer for all compounds could be obtained by changing the solvent from toluene to Et2O, reavealing a correlation between solid-state structure and ionic radii as well as solvent. While photoluminescence (PL) properties of Cot-lanthanide compounds are scarce, the La complexes show ligand centered green luminescence, whereas the Ce complexes reveal deep red emission origin from d-f transitions. The Er-compounds are single-molecule magnets, in which the magnetic relaxation of each Er ion occurs isolated from its neighbors at temperatures above 10 K, while below 9 K a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Er ions was seen.

Tris(carbene)borates; alternatives to cyclopentadienyls in organolanthanide chemistry

The chemistry of the tris-carbene anion phenyltris(3-alkyl-imidazoline-2-yliden-1-yl)borate, [C3Me]- ligand, is initiated for f-block metal cations. Neutral, molecular complexes of the form Ln(C3)2I are formed for cerium(III), while a separated ion pair [Ln(C3)2]I forms for ytterbium(III). DFT/QTAIM computational analyses of the complexes and related tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) - supported analogs demonstrates the anticipated strength of the σ donation and confirms greater covalency in the metal-carbon bonds of the [C3Me]- complexes in comparison with those in the TpMe,Me complexes. The DFT calculations demonstrate the crucial role of THF solvent in accurately reproducing the contrasting molecular and ion-pair geometries observed experimentally for the Ce and Yb complexes.

Linear, Electron-Rich, Homoleptic Rare Earth Metallocene and Its Redox Activity

The first homoleptic sandwich complex of dibenzocyclooctatetraene (dbCOT), representing a large cyclooctatetraene (COT) ligand with two fused benzene moieties, for any metal was accessed through salt metathesis of YCl₃ with K₂dbCOT in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis on red-brown [K(crypt-222)][Y(dbCOT)₂], 1, revealed a remarkably linear anionic yttrocene complex featuring a centroid-yttrium-centroid angle of 180.0°. The anionic moiety adopts a pseudo D_2d geometry, where the carbon atoms of the central COT ring exhibit a staggered geometry. In total, 36 π-electrons are stored on both dbCOT anions, rendering it the largest isolated sandwich complex containing only fused aromatic rings. The solution-state structure of 1 was probed through a series of techniques involving cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis, and 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, including ⁸⁹Y NMR. The density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis uncovered an ionic bonding interaction between the (dbCOT)^2- ligands and Y^III ion. NICS calculations support the experimentally observed aromatic character of 1, despite the deviation from planarity found in the dbCOT moieties. The cyclic voltammograms allude to the accessibility of a radical oxidation state, dbCOT^3-•, based on a quasi-reversible feature. Excitingly, the chemical one-electron reduction of 1 through exposure to potassium graphite yielded a paramagnetic molecule, which was detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. Notably, this EPR spectrum is the first one for any sandwich complex containing a COT radical. Remarkably, 1 is thermally stable, and its isolation may provide access to mono- and multinuclear complexes comprising heavier metals with applications in small-molecule activation, single-molecule magnetism, and molecular nanowires.

Heteroleptic Rare-Earth Tris(metallocenes) Containing a Dibenzocyclooctatetraene Dianion

Isolable heteroleptic tris(metallocenes) containing five-membered and larger rings remain extremely scarce. The utilization of tripositive rare-earth-metal ions with ionic radii >1 Å allowed access to unprecedented and sterically congested dibenzocyclooctatetraenyl (dbCOT) metallocenes, [K(crypt-222)][Cp^tet₂RE(η²-dbCOT)] (RE = Y (1), Dy (2); Cp^tet = tetramethylcyclopentadienyl), through a salt metathesis reaction involving Cp^tet₂RE(BPh₄) and the potassium salt of the dbCOT dianion. The solid-state structures were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and IR spectroscopy and provided evidence for the first crystallographically characterized (dbCOT)^2- anion in a complex containing d- or f-block metals. Remarkably, the (Cp^tet)^- ligands force a distortion from planarity within the (dbCOT)^2- moiety, engendering a rare η²-bonding motif, as opposed to the classical η⁸ conformation observed in complexes bearing a (COT)^2- ion. The η² coordination mode was proven crystallographically between 100 and 298 K and computationally (DFT and NBO). Furthermore, nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations uncovered significant ring current within the dbCOT ligand. The solution-state properties of 1 and 2 were analyzed via cyclic voltammetry, NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammograms of 1 and 2 exhibit a quasi-reversible feature indicating the accessibility of complexes with dbCOT in two oxidation states (dbCOT^2-/3-•). Importantly, the dysprosium congener, 2, is a zero-field single-molecule magnet (SMM).

A Uranium(II) Arene Complex That Acts as a Uranium(I) Synthon

Two-electron reduction of the amidate-supported U(III) mono(arene) complex U(TDA)₃ (2) with KC₈ yields the anionic bis(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₂] (3) (TDA = N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)pivalamido). EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and calculations using DFT as well as multireference CASSCF methods all provide strong evidence that the electronic structure of 3 is best represented as a 5f⁴ U(II) metal center bound to a monoreduced arene ligand. Reactivity studies show 3 reacts as a U(I) synthon by behaving as a two-electron reductant toward I₂ to form the dinuclear U(III)-U(III) triiodide species [K[2.2.2]cryptand][(UI(TDA)₂)₂(μ-I)] (6) and as a three-electron reductant toward cycloheptatriene (CHT) to form the U(IV) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(η⁷-C₇H₇)(TDA)₂(THF)] (7). The reaction of 3 with cyclooctatetraene (COT) generates a mixture of the U(III) anion [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)₄] (1-crypt) and U(COT)₂, while the addition of COT to complex 2 instead yields the dinuclear U(IV)-U(IV) inverse sandwich complex [U(TDA)₃]₂(μ-η⁸:η³-C₈H₈) (8). Two-electron reduction of the homoleptic Th(IV) amidate complex Th(TDA)₄ (4) with KC₈ gives the mono(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][Th(TDA)₃(THF)] (5). The C-C bond lengths and torsion angles in the bound arene of 5 suggest a direduced arene bound to a Th(IV) metal center; this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations.

Experimental evaluation of the stabilization of the COT orbitals by 4f orbitals in COT2Ce using a Hubbard model

Significant orbital mixing is rare in lanthanide complexes because of the limited radial extent of the 4f orbitals, which results in a generally small stabilization due to 4f orbital interactions. Nevertheless, even a small amount of additional stabilization could enhance lanthanide separations. One lanthanide complex in which orbital mixing has been extensively studied both experimentally and computationally is cerocene, COT₂Ce, where COT is cyclooctatetraene. This compound has a singlet ground state with a low-lying, triplet excited state. Previous fluorescence studies on trimethylsilyl-substituted cerocenes indicate the triplet state is 0.4 eV higher in energy than the singlet state. In addition, computational studies predict that the triplet is 0.3 to 1 eV higher in energy than the singlet. The synthesis of highly pure COT₂Ce by Walter and Andersen allowed its physical properties to be accurately measured. Using these measurements, we evaluate the stabilization of the 4f orbitals using two, independent approaches. A Hubbard model is used to evaluate the stabilization of the ground state due to orbital mixing. This stabilization, which is also the singlet-triplet gap, is -0.29 eV using this model. This gap was also from the temperature independent paramagnetism of COT₂Ce, which yielded a value of -0.32 eV.

Synthesis, bonding properties and ether activation reactivity of cyclobutadienyl-ligated hybrid uranocenes

A series of hybrid uranocenes consisting of uranium(iv) sandwiched between cyclobutadienyl (Cb) and cyclo-octatetraenyl (COT) ligands has been synthesized, structurally characterized and studied computationally. The dimetallic species [(η4-Cb'''')(η8-COT)U(μ:η2:η8-COT)U(THF)(η4-Cb'''')] (1) forms concomitantly with, and can be separated from, monometallic [(η4-Cb'''')U(THF)(η8-COT)] (2) (Cb'''' = 1,2,3,4-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadienyl, COT = cyclo-octatetraenyl). In toluene solution at room temperature, 1 dissociates into 2 and the unsolvated uranocene [(η4-Cb'''')U(η8-COT)] (3). By applying a high vacuum, both 1 and 2 can be converted directly into 3. Using bulky silyl substituents on the COT ligand allowed isolation of base-free [(η4-Cb'''')U{η8-1,4-(iPr3Si)2C8H6}] (4), with compounds 3 and 4 being new members of the bis(annulene) family of actinocenes and the first to contain a cyclobutadienyl ligand. Computational studies show that the bonding in the hybrid uranocenes 3 and 4 has non-negligible covalency. New insight into actinocene bonding is provided by the complementary interactions of the different ligands with uranium, whereby the 6d orbitals interact most strongly with the cyclobutadienyl ligand and the 5f orbitals do so with the COT ligands. The redox-neutral activation of diethyl ether by [(η4-Cb'''')U(η8-C8H8)] is also described and represents a uranium-cyclobutadienyl cooperative process, potentially forming the basis of further small-molecule activation chemistry.

Main Group Chemistry at the Interface with Molecular Magnetism

Innovative synthetic coordination and, increasingly, organometallic chemistry are at the heart of advances in molecular magnetism. Smart ligand design is essential for implementing controlled modifications to the electronic structure and magnetic properties of transition metal and f-element compounds, and many important recent developments use nontraditional ligands based on low-coordinate main group elements to drive the field forward. This review charts progress in molecular magnetism from the perspective of ligands in which the donor atoms range from low-coordinate 2p elements-particularly carbon but also boron and nitrogen-to the heavier p-block elements such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and even bismuth. Emphasis is placed on the role played by novel main group ligands in addressing magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and f-element compounds, which underpins the development of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), a family of magnetic materials that can retain magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field below a blocking temperature. Nontraditional p-block donor atoms, with their relatively diffuse valence orbitals and more diverse bonding characteristics, also introduce scope for tuning the spin-orbit coupling properties and metal-ligand covalency in molecular magnets, which has implications in areas such as magnetic exchange coupling and spin crossover phenomena. The chemistry encompasses transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides and describes recently discovered molecular magnets that can be regarded, currently, as defining the state of the art. This review identifies that main group chemistry at the interface molecular magnetism is an area with huge potential to deliver new types of molecular magnets with previously unseen properties and applications.

Actinide Organometallic Complexes with π-Ligands

Recent developments and results from the organometallic chemistry of the actinides are reviewed. In the last one and a half years the structural data of about 15 organometallic complexes of transuranium actinides (Np or Pu) have been published, all involving π-ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal ion. On the basis of these data, a comparison of these molecules is presented. Depending on the steric demands of the ligands, effects like the actinide contraction seem to be stronger or weaker in the structural features. This indicates that the interplay between the actinide ion and the π-ligand is rather flexible, enabling the formation of stable bonds over a broad range of actinide ion oxidation states.

Selective reduction of 1,5-diazacyclooctatetraenes: synthesis and structures of aromatic diazacyclooctatetraenyl dianions and a 2,6-bipyrrolinyl dianionic Co(ii) complex

The first structurally well-defined aromatic 1,5-diazacyclooctatetraenyl dianion and a 2,6-bipyrrolinyl dianionic Co(ii) complex were obtained selectively via reduction of 1,5-diazacyclooctatetraenes.

Solid-State Structure of Tris-Cyclopentadienide Uranium(III) and Plutonium(III)

The organometallic tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) (AnCp3 ) complexes were first reported about 50 years ago. However, up until now, only the NpCp3 solid state structure has been studied. Here we report on the solid state structures of UCp3 and PuCp3 which are isostructural to the Np analogue. The structural models are supported by theoretical calculations and compared to their lanthanide analogues. The observed trends in changes of bond lengths might be indicator for an increased covalency in the bonding in the tris-cyclopentadienide actinide(III) complexes (AnCp3 ) compared to their lanthanide homologues.

Boryl- and Silyl-Substituted Mixed Sandwich Compounds of Scandium

An improved, one-pot synthesis of the linear sandwich compound [Sc(η⁵ -C₅ H₅ )(η⁸ -C₈ H₈ )] is presented. The synthetic procedure is amenable to boryl- and silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl and cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, thereby yielding the first functionalized derivatives. We found that the synthesis of the silyl-substituted mixed sandwich complexes produces higher yields when the ligand exchange is carried out stepwise, by isolating the intermediate trimethylsilylated half-sandwich complex [Sc(η⁸ -C₈ H₇ SiMe₃ )Cl(THF)] (THF=tetrahydrofuran). The molecular structures of the parent complex, as well as of its mono-boryl-substituted derivatives, have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, the optical and electrochemical properties of the mixed sandwich complexes are reported.

The “Wanderlust” of Me3Si groups in rare-earth triple-decker complexes: a combined experimental and computational study

Organometallic Neptunium Chemistry

Fifty years have passed since the foundation of organometallic neptunium chemistry, and yet only a handful of complexes have been reported, and even fewer have been fully characterized. Yet, increasingly, combined synthetic/spectroscopic/computational studies are demonstrating how covalently bonding, soft, carbocyclic organometallic ligands provide an excellent platform for advancing the fundamental understanding of the differences in orbital contributions and covalency in f-block metal-ligand bonding. Understanding the subtleties is the key to the safe handling and separations of the highly radioactive nuclei. This review describes the complexes that have been synthesized to date and presents a critical assessment of the successes and difficulties in their analysis and the bonding information they have provided. Because of increasing recent efforts to start new Np-capable air-sensitive inorganic chemistry laboratories, the importance of radioactivity, the basics of Np decay and its ramifications (including the radiochemical synthesis of one organometallic compound), and the available anhydrous starting materials are also surveyed. The review also highlights a range of instances in which important differences in the chemical behavior between Np and its closest neighbors, uranium and plutonium, are found.

Scandium-Mediated Formation of a Bis(tetrahydropentalene)

The reactivity of Li[Sc(COT'')₂ ] (1; COT''=1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) towards CoCl₂ is considerably different from that of related lanthanide triple-decker sandwich complexes. In addition to the expected triple-decker complex Sc₂ (COT'')₃ (2), the complex Sc₂ {μ-BTHP}(COT'')₂ (3) is formed, which comprises the novel BTHP^2- ligand (BTHP^2- =bis(3,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3a,6,6a-tetrahydropentalene-1-yl)diide or bis(2,7-bis(trimethylsilyl)bicyclo[3.3.0]octa-2,7-dien-4-yl)diide, C₁₆ H₁₀ (SiMe₃ )₄^2- ). The formation of 3 is likely facilitated by the fact that scandium prefers η⁸ ,η³  coordination rather than highly symmetric η⁸ ,η⁸  coordination, and the η³ -coordinated COT'' ligand in 1 is activated owing to a loss of aromaticity. Acid hydrolysis of 3 leads to air-stable H₂ BTHP (4).

A designer ligand field for blue-green luminescence of organoeuropium(ii) sandwich complexes with cyclononatetraenyl ligands

A novel η⁹-coordinated double-decker sandwich complex of divalent europium is synthesized. The complex exhibits blue-green photoluminescence at 516 nm, which is significantly blue-shifted from those of other organoeuropium(ii) sandwich complexes (∼630 nm). The blue-shift was quantitatively explained by the weakened electrostatic field of the expanded 10-π ring.

A Structurally Characterized Organometallic Plutonium(IV) Complex

The blood-red plutonocene complex Pu(1,3-COT'')(1,4-COT'') (4; COT''=η⁸ -bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) has been synthesized by oxidation of the anionic sandwich complex Li[Pu(1,4-COT'')₂ ] (3) with anhydrous cobalt(II) chloride. The first crystal structure determination of an organoplutonium(IV) complex revealed an asymmetric sandwich structure for 4 where one COT'' ring is 1,3-substituted while the other retains the original 1,4-substitution pattern. The electronic structure of 4 has been elucidated by a computational study, revealing a probable cause for the unexpected silyl group migration.
