Rational fabrication of a gold-coated AFM TERS tip by pulsed electrodeposition

Nanoscale chemical characterization of materials and interfaces by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Materials and their interfaces are the core for the development of a large variety of fields, including catalysis, energy storage and conversion. In this case, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), which combines scanning probe microscopy with plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, is a powerful technique that can simultaneously obtain the morphological information and chemical fingerprint of target samples at nanometer spatial resolution. It is an ideal tool for the nanoscale chemical characterization of materials and interfaces, correlating their structures with chemical performances. In this review, we begin with a brief introduction to the nanoscale characterization of materials and interfaces, followed by a detailed discussion on the recent theoretical understanding and technical improvements of TERS, including the origin of enhancement, TERS instruments, TERS tips and the application of algorithms in TERS. Subsequently, we list the key experimental issues that need to be addressed to conduct successful TERS measurements. Next, we focus on the recent progress of TERS in the study of various materials, especially the novel low-dimensional materials, and the progresses of TERS in studying different interfaces, including both solid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future developments of TERS in the study of materials and interfaces.

Scanning Plasmon-Enhanced Microscopy for Simultaneous Optoelectrical Characterization

Scanning microscopy methods are crucial for the advancement of nanoelectronics. However, the vertical nanoprobes in such techniques suffer limitations such as the fragility at the tip-sample interface, complex instrumentation, and the lack of in operando functionality in several cases. Here, we introduce scanning plasmon-enhanced microscopy (SPEM) and demonstrate its capabilities on MoS2 and WSe2 nanosheets. SPEM combines a nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) configuration with a portable conductive cantilever, enabling simultaneous optical and electrical characterization. This distinguishes it from other current techniques that cannot provide both characterizations simultaneously. It offers a competitive optical resolution of 600 nm with local enhancement of optical signal up to 20,000 times. A single gold nanoparticle with a 15 nm radius forms pristine, nondamaging van der Waals contact, which allows observation of unexpected p-type behavior of MoS2 at the nanoscale. SPEM reconstructs the NPoM method by eliminating the need for extensive statistical analysis and offering excellent nanoscale mapping resolution of any selected region. It surpasses other scanning techniques in combining precise optical and electrical characterization, interactive simplicity, tip durability, and reproducibility, positioning it as the optimal tool for advancing nanoelectronics.

Rapidly determining the 3D structure of proteins by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Despite great advances in protein structure analysis, label-free and ultrasensitive methods to obtain the natural and dynamic three-dimensional (3D) structures are still urgently needed. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can be a good candidate, whereas the complexity originated from the interactions between the protein and the gradient surface electric field makes it extremely challenging to determine the protein structure. Here, we propose a deciphering strategy for accurate determination of 3D protein structure from experimental SERS spectra in seconds by simply summing SERS spectra of isolated amino acids in electric fields of different strength with their orientations in protein. The 3D protein structure can be reconstructed by comparing the experimental spectra obtained in a well-defined gap-mode SERS configuration with the simulated spectra. The gradient electric field endows SERS with a unique advantage to section biomolecules with atomic precision, which makes SERS a competent tool for monitoring biomolecular events under physiological conditions.

Exploring Reliable and Efficient Plasmonic Nanopatterning for Surface- and Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopies

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is of growing interest for a wide range of applications, especially for biomedical analysis, thanks to its sensitivity, specificity, and multiplexing capabilities. A crucial role for successful applications of SERS is played by the development of reproducible, efficient, and facile procedures for the fabrication of metal nanostructures (SERS substrates). Even more challenging is to extend the fabrication techniques of plasmonic nano-textures to atomic force microscope (AFM) probes to carry out tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) experiments, in which spatial resolution below the diffraction limit is added to the peculiarities of SERS. In this short review, we describe recent studies performed by our group during the last ten years in which novel nanofabrication techniques have been successfully applied to SERS and TERS experiments for studying bio-systems and molecular species of environmental interest.

Rapid theoretical method for inverse design on a tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) probe

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) can provide correlated topographic and chemical information at the nanoscale, with great sensitivity and spatial resolution depending on the configuration of the TERS probe. The sensitivity of the TERS probe is largely determined by two effects: the lightning-rod effect and local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). While 3D numerical simulations have traditionally been used to optimize the TERS probe structure by sweeping two or more parameters, this method is extremely resource-intensive, with computation times growing exponentially as the number of parameters increases. In this work, we propose an alternative rapid theoretical method that reduces computational loading while still achieving effective TERS probe optimization through the inverse design method. By applying this method to optimize a TERS probe with four free-structural parameters, we observed a nearly 1 order of magnitude improvement in enhancement factor (|E/E₀|²), in contrast to a parameter sweeping 3D simulation that would take ∼7000 hours of computation. Our method, therefore, shows great promise as a useful tool for designing not only TERS probes but also other near-field optical probes and optical antennas.

Progress of tip-enhanced Raman scattering for the last two decades and its challenges in very recent years

Tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) has recently attracted remarkable attention as a novel nano-spectroscopy technique. TERS, which provides site-specific information, can be performed on any material surface regardless of morphology. Moreover, it can be applied in various environments, such as ambient air, ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), solutions, and electrochemical environments. This review reports on one hand progress of TERS for the last two decades, and on the other hand, its challenges in very recent years. Part of the progress of TERS starts with the prehistory and history of TERS, and then, the characteristics and advantages of TERS are described. Significant emphasis is put on the development of TERS instrumentation and equipment such as ultrahigh vacuum TERS, liquid TERS, electrochemical-TERS, and tip-preparations. Applications of TERS, particularly those with nanocarbons, biological materials, and surface and interface analysis, are mentioned in some detail. In the part on challenges, we focus on the very recent advances in TERS; progress in spatial resolution to the angstrom scale is the hottest topic. Recent TERS studies performed under UHV, for example chemical imaging at the angstrom scale and Raman detection of bond breaking and making of a chemisorbed up-standing single molecules at single-bond level, are reviewed. Of course, there is no clear border between the two parts. In the last part the perspective of TERS is discussed.

Quantitatively Deciphering Electronic Properties of Defects at Atomically Thin Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

Defects can locally tailor the electronic properties of 2D materials, including the band gap and electron density, and possess the merit for optical and electronic applications. However, it is still a great challenge to realize rational defect engineering, which requires quantitative study of the effect of defects on electronic properties under ambient conditions. In this work, we employed tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) spectroscopy to obtain the PL spectra of different defects (wrinkle and edge) in mechanically exfoliated thin-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with nanometer spatial resolution. We quantitatively obtained the band gap and electron density at defects by analyzing the wavelength and intensity ratio of excitons and trions. We further visualized the strain distribution across a wrinkle and the edge-induced reconstructive regions of the band gap and electron density by TEPL line scans. The doping effect on the Fermi level and optical performance was unveiled through comparative studies of edges on TMDC monolayers of different doping types. These quantitative results are vital to guide defect engineering and design and fabrication of TMDC-based optoelectronics devices.

Comparing Commercial Metal-Coated AFM Tips and Home-Made Bulk Gold Tips for Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of Polymer Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) combines the high specificity and sensitivity of plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with the high spatial resolution of scanning probe microscopy. TERS has gained a lot of attention from many nanoscience fields, since this technique can provide chemical and structural information of surfaces and interfaces with nanometric spatial resolution. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are very versatile nanostructures that can be dispersed in organic solvents or polymeric matrices, giving rise to new nanocomposite materials, showing improved mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. Moreover, MWCNTs can be easily functionalized with polymers in order to be employed as specific chemical sensors. In this context, TERS is strategic, since it can provide useful information on the cooperation of the two components at the nanoscale for the optimization of the macroscopic properties of the hybrid material. Nevertheless, efficient TERS characterization relies on the geometrical features and material composition of the plasmonic tip used. In this work, after comparing the TERS performance of commercial Ag coated nanotips and home-made bulk Au tips on bare MWCNTs, we show how TERS can be exploited for characterizing MWCNTs mixed with conjugated fluorene copolymers, thus contributing to the understanding of the polymer/CNT interaction process at the local scale.

Electrochemical Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: An In Situ Nanospectroscopy for Electrochemistry

Revealing the intrinsic relationships between the structure, properties, and performance of the electrochemical interface is a long-term goal in the electrochemistry and surface science communities because it could facilitate the rational design of electrochemical devices. Achieving this goal requires in situ characterization techniques that provide rich chemical information and high spatial resolution. Electrochemical tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (EC-TERS), which provides molecular fingerprint information with nanometer-scale spatial resolution, is a promising technique for achieving this goal. Since the first demonstration of this technique in 2015, EC-TERS has been developed for characterizing various electrochemical processes at the nanoscale and molecular level. Here, we review the development of EC-TERS over the past 5 years. We discuss progress in addressing the technical challenges, including optimizing the EC-TERS setup and solving tip-related issues, and provide experimental guidelines. We also survey the important applications of EC-TERS for probing molecular protonation, molecular adsorption, electrochemical reactions, and photoelectrochemical reactions. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in the future development of this young technique.

Understanding the Role of Different Substrate Geometries for Achieving Optimum Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensitivity

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has experienced tremendous progress over the last two decades. Despite detecting single molecules and achieving sub-nanometer spatial resolution, attaining high TERS sensitivity is still a challenging task due to low reproducibility of tip fabrication, especially regarding very sharp tip apices. Here, we present an approach for achieving strong TERS sensitivity via a systematic study of the near-field enhancement properties in the so-called gap-mode TERS configurations using the combination of finite element method (FEM) simulations and TERS experiments. In the simulation study, a gold tip apex is fixed at 80 nm of diameter, and the substrate consists of 20 nm high gold nanodiscs with diameter varying from 5 nm to 120 nm placed on a flat extended gold substrate. The local electric field distributions are computed in the spectral range from 500 nm to 800 nm with the tip placed both at the center and the edge of the gold nanostructure. The model is then compared with the typical gap-mode TERS configuration, in which a tip of varying diameter from 2 nm to 160 nm is placed in the proximity of a gold thin film. Our simulations show that the tip-nanodisc combined system provides much improved TERS sensitivity compared to the conventional gap-mode TERS configuration. We find that for the same tip diameter, the spatial resolution achieved in the tip-nanodisc model is much better than that observed in the conventional gap-mode TERS, which requires a very sharp metal tip to achieve the same spatial resolution on an extended metal substrate. Finally, TERS experiments are conducted on gold nanodisc arrays using home-built gold tips to validate our simulation results. Our simulations provide a guide for designing and realization of both high-spatial resolution and strong TERS intensity in future TERS experiments.

Atomic Force Microscopy Based Top-Illumination Electrochemical Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Electrochemical tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (EC-TERS) is a powerful technique for the in situ study of the physiochemical properties of the electrochemical solid/liquid interface at the nanoscale and molecular level. To further broaden the potential window of EC-TERS while extending its application to opaque samples, here, we develop a top-illumination atomic force microscopy (AFM) based EC-TERStechnique by using a water-immersion objective of a high numerical aperture to introduce the excitation laser and collect the signal. This technique not only extends the application of EC-TERS but also has a high detection sensitivity and experimental efficiency. We coat a SiO₂ protection layer over the AFM-TERS tip to improve both the mechanical and chemical stability of the tip in a liquid TERS experiment. We investigate the influence of liquid on the tip-sample distance to obtain the highest TERS enhancement. We further evaluate the reliability of the as-developed EC-AFM-TERS technique by studying the electrochemical redox reaction of polyaniline. The top-illumination EC-AFM-TERS is promising for broadening the application of EC-TERS to more practical systems, including energy storage and (photo)electrocatalysis.

One-side metal-coated pyramidal cantilever tips for highly reproducible tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has been recognized as a useful tool for nanoscale chemical analysis, and it can further reach down to the sub-nanometer scale in the gap-mode configuration. Using an atomic force microscopy (AFM) in gap-mode TERS for position control of a metallic tip, a unique and correlative analysis can be even realized at the single molecule level. However, one of crucial issues in AFM-based gap-mode TERS is the fabrication of reliable and reproducible cantilver metallic tips. Here, we propose a simple, cost-effective fabrication method of metal-coated tips for AFM-based gap-mode TERS by means of the physical vapor deposition technique in a reproducible way. Our plamonic tips have extremely smooth silver layers on one side of the pyramidal tip, which is totally different from the regular metallic tips that hold granular metallic structures randomly arranged on their bodies. Importantly, all fabricated tips exhibited a reasonably high enhancement factor of more than 10⁴, which indicates that the reproducibility of our plasmonic tip is virtually 100% in the gap-mode configuration. The excellent reproducibility of gap-mode TERS measurement holds great promise for rendering AFM-based TERS as a powerful analytical technique in a broad range of fields.

Uniform Periodic Bowtie SERS Substrate with Narrow Nanogaps Obtained by Monitored Pulsed Electrodeposition

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive technique with molecular specificity, making it an ideal analytical tool in various fields. However, the breadth of practical applications of SERS has been severely limited because it is still a great challenge to achieve simultaneously a high sensitivity and a high reproducibility. Herein, we report a highly controllable method to fabricate periodic bowtie SERS substrates with a narrow nanogap, high SERS enhancement, and good uniformity over a large area. The periodic bowtie template is first fabricated over a gold film by holographic lithography (HL), followed by Au deposition to obtain a conductive plasmonic bowtie array. The gap size is then narrowed down by pulsed electrodeposition of Ag simultaneously monitored in situ by electrochemical dark field spectroscopy. Thus, we are able to observe the most sensitive change in the scattering spectra when the gap is just about to merge and obtain uniform SERS substrates with a gap size down to around 5 nm. The average enhancement factor of 5 × 10⁷ to 1 × 10⁸ is obtained, which is 50 times larger than that from Au nanoparticle-assembled substrates and 140 times larger than that from commercial Klarite chips. This substrate offers a promising opportunity for SERS practical applications.

A Review of Chinese Raman Spectroscopy Research Over the Past Twenty Years

This paper introduces the major Chinese research groups in the fields of biomedicine, food safety, environmental testing, material research, archaeological and cultural relics, gem identification, forensic science, and other research areas of Raman spectroscopy and combined methods spanning the two decades from 1997 to 2017. Briefly summarized are the research directions and contents of the major Chinese Raman spectroscopy research groups, giving researchers engaged in Raman spectroscopy research a more comprehensive understanding of the state of Chinese Raman spectroscopy research and future development trends to further develop Raman spectroscopy and its applications.

Present and Future of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

The discovery of the enhancement of Raman scattering by molecules adsorbed on nanostructured metal surfaces is a landmark in the history of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Significant experimental and theoretical effort has been directed toward understanding the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect and demonstrating its potential in various types of ultrasensitive sensing applications in a wide variety of fields. In the 45 years since its discovery, SERS has blossomed into a rich area of research and technology, but additional efforts are still needed before it can be routinely used analytically and in commercial products. In this Review, prominent authors from around the world joined together to summarize the state of the art in understanding and using SERS and to predict what can be expected in the near future in terms of research, applications, and technological development. This Review is dedicated to SERS pioneer and our coauthor, the late Prof. Richard Van Duyne, whom we lost during the preparation of this article.

Probing the edge-related properties of atomically thin MoS2 at nanoscale

Defects can induce drastic changes of the electronic properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and influence their applications. It is still a great challenge to characterize small defects and correlate their structures with properties. Here, we show that tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) can obtain distinctly different Raman features of edge defects in atomically thin MoS₂, which allows us to probe their unique electronic properties and identify defect types (e.g., armchair and zigzag edges) in ambient. We observed an edge-induced Raman peak (396 cm⁻¹) activated by the double resonance Raman scattering (DRRS) process and revealed electron–phonon interaction in edges. We further visualize the edge-induced band bending region by using this DRRS peak and electronic transition region using the electron density-sensitive Raman peak at 406 cm⁻¹. The power of TERS demonstrated in MoS₂ can also be extended to other 2D materials, which may guide the defect engineering for desired properties.

Probing inevitable defects in two- dimensional materials is challenging. Here, the authors tackle this issue by using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) to obtain distinctly different Raman features of edge defects in atomically thin MoS₂, and further probe their unique electronic properties as well as identify the armchair and zigzag edges.

Nanoscale chemical imaging using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Confocal and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) are powerful techniques for molecular characterization; however, they suffer from the drawback of diffraction-limited spatial resolution. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) overcomes this limitation and provides chemical information at length scales in the tens of nanometers. In contrast to alternative approaches to nanoscale chemical analysis, TERS is label free, is non-destructive, and can be performed in both air and liquid environments, allowing its use in a diverse range of applications. Atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based TERS is especially versatile, as it can be applied to a broad range of samples on various substrates. Despite its advantages, widespread uptake of this technique for nanoscale chemical imaging has been inhibited by various experimental challenges, such as limited lifetime, and the low stability and yield of TERS probes. This protocol details procedures that will enable researchers to reliably perform TERS imaging using a transmission-mode AFM-TERS configuration on both biological and non-biological samples. The procedure consists of four stages: (i) preparation of plasmonically active TERS probes; (ii) alignment of the TERS system; (iii) experimental procedures for nanoscale imaging using TERS; and (iv) TERS data processing. We provide procedures and example data for a range of different sample types, including polymer thin films, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic molecules, photocatalyst surfaces, small molecules within biological cells, single-layer graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes in both air and water. With this protocol, TERS probes can be prepared within ~23 h, and each subsequent TERS experimental procedure requires 3-5 h.

Design of a Zn-MOF biosensor via a ligand “lock” for the recognition and distinction of S-containing amino acids

A new method of introducing a ‘lock’ ligand into the frame of MOFs is described to achieve the first example of a MOF-based biosensor for the recognition and distinction of S-containing amino acids.

Controllable Fabrication of Au-Coated AFM Probes via a Wet-Chemistry Procedure

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), which offers a spatial resolution far beyond the limitations of the optical diffraction and detection sensitivity down to a single molecular level, has become one of the powerful techniques applied in current nanoscience and technology. However, the excellent performance of a TERS system is very much dependent on the quality of metallized probes used in TERS characterization. Thus, how to prepare higher-quality probes plays a vital role in the development and application of TERS technique. In this work, one simple wet-chemistry procedure was designed to fabricate atomic force microscopy-based TERS (AFM-TERS) probes. Through the controlled growth of a gold film on a commercial silicon AFM probe, TERS probes with different apex diameters were prepared successfully. A series of TERS results indicated that the probes with the apex size of 50~60 nm had the maximum TERS enhancement, and the Raman enhancement factor was in the range of 106 to 107. Compared with those prepared by other fabrication methods, our TERS probes fabricated by this wet-chemistry method have the virtues of good stability, high reproducibility, and strong enhancement effect.

Advanced Nanoscale Approaches to Single-(Bio)entity Sensing and Imaging

Individual (bio)chemical entities could show a very heterogeneous behaviour under the same conditions that could be relevant in many biological processes of significance in the life sciences. Conventional detection approaches are only able to detect the average response of an ensemble of entities and assume that all entities are identical. From this perspective, important information about the heterogeneities or rare (stochastic) events happening in individual entities would remain unseen. Some nanoscale tools present interesting physicochemical properties that enable the possibility to detect systems at the single-entity level, acquiring richer information than conventional methods. In this review, we introduce the foundations and the latest advances of several nanoscale approaches to sensing and imaging individual (bio)entities using nanoprobes, nanopores, nanoimpacts, nanoplasmonics and nanomachines. Several (bio)entities such as cells, proteins, nucleic acids, vesicles and viruses are specifically considered. These nanoscale approaches provide a wide and complete toolbox for the study of many biological systems at the single-entity level.

Rational fabrication of silver-coated AFM TERS tips with a high enhancement and long lifetime

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), known as nanospectroscopy, has received increasing interest as it can provide nanometer spatial resolution and chemical fingerprint information of samples simultaneously. Since Ag tips are well accepted to show a higher TERS enhancement than that of gold tips, there is an urgent quest for Ag TERS tips with a high enhancement, long lifetime, and high reproducibility, especially for atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based TERS. Herein, we developed an electrodeposition method to fabricate Ag-coated AFM TERS tips in a highly controllable and reproducible way. We investigated the influence of the electrodeposition potential and time on the morphology and radius of the tip. The radii of Ag-coated AFM tips can be rationally controlled at a few to hundreds nanometers, which allows us to systematically study the dependence of the TERS enhancement on the tip radius. The Ag-coated AFM tips show the highest TERS enhancement under 632.8 nm laser excitation and a broad localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) response when coupled to a Au substrate. The tips exhibit a lifetime of 13 days, which is particularly important for applications that need a long measuring time.

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy - from early developments to recent advances

An analytical technique operating at the nanoscale must be flexible regarding variable experimental conditions while ideally also being highly specific, extremely sensitive, and spatially confined. In this respect, tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) has been demonstrated to be ideally suited to, e.g., elucidating chemical reaction mechanisms, determining the distribution of components and identifying and localizing specific molecular structures at the nanometre scale. TERS combines the specificity of Raman spectroscopy with the high spatial resolution of scanning probe microscopies by utilizing plasmonic nanostructures to confine the incident electromagnetic field and increase it by many orders of magnitude. Consequently, molecular structure information in the optical near field that is inaccessible to other optical microscopy methods can be obtained. In this general review, the development of this still-young technique, from early experiments to recent achievements concerning inorganic, organic, and biological materials, is addressed. Accordingly, the technical developments necessary for stable and reliable AFM- and STM-based TERS experiments, together with the specific properties of the instruments under different conditions, are reviewed. The review also highlights selected experiments illustrating the capabilities of this emerging technique, the number of users of which has steadily increased since its inception in 2000. Finally, an assessment of the frontiers and new concepts of TERS, which aim towards rendering it a general and widely applicable technique that combines the highest possible lateral resolution and extreme sensitivity, is provided.

Nanometal Skin of Plasmonic Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Near-Field Scattering Probes

In this work, atomic force microscopy probes are functionalized by virtue of self-assembling monolayers of block copolymer (BCP) micelles loaded either with clusters of silver nanoparticles or bimetallic heterostructures consisting of mixed species of silver and gold nanoparticles. The resulting self-organized patterns allow coating the tips with a sort of nanometal skin made of geometrically confined nanoislands. This approach favors the reproducible engineering and tuning of the plasmonic properties of the resulting structured tip by varying the nanometal loading of the micelles. The newly conceived tips are applied for experiments of tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) spectroscopy and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). TERS and s-SNOM probe characterizations on several standard Raman analytes and patterned nanostructures demonstrate excellent enhancement factor with the possibility of fast scanning and spatial resolution <12 nm. In fact, each metal nanoisland consists of a multiscale heterostructure that favors large scattering and near-field amplification. Then, we verify the tips to allow challenging nongap-TER spectroscopy on thick biosamples. Our approach introduces a synergistic chemical functionalization of the tips for versatile inclusion and delivery of plasmonic nanoparticles at the tip apex, which may promote the tuning of the plasmonic properties, a large enhancement, and the possibility of adding new degrees of freedom for tip functionalization.
