Easy Processable Photomechanical Thin Film Involving a Photochromic Diarylethene and a Thermoplastic Elastomer in Supramolecular Interaction

A novel supramolecular photoactuator in the form of a thin film of centimetric size has been developed as an alternative to traditional liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) involving azobenzene (AZO) units or photochromic microcrystals. This thin film is produced through spin coating without the need for alignment or crosslinking. The photoactuator combines a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) functionalized with ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) units, and a telechelic thermoplastic elastomer, also functionalized with UPy, allowing quadruple hydrogen bonding between the two components. Upon alternating ultraviolet (UV) and visible light exposure, the film exhibits reversible bending and color changes, studied using displacement and absorption tracking setups. For the first time, the photomechanical effect (PME) is quantitatively correlated with photochromism, showing that DTE units drive the movement under both UV (photocyclization) and visible (photoreversion) light. In situ illumination techniques reveal that the PME arises from photoinduced strain within 160 nm UPy-bonded DTE domains, which expand and contract by approximately 50% under UV and visible light, respectively. The semicrystalline nature of the elastomer and a robust supramolecular network connecting both components are critical in converting microscopic photostrain into macroscopic actuation.

Halogen, Chalcogen, Pnictogen, and Tetrel Bonding in Non-Covalent Organocatalysis: An Update

The use of noncovalent interactions based on electrophilic halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, or tetrel centers in organocatalysis has gained noticeable attention. Herein, we provide an overview on the most important developments in the last years with a clear focus on experimental studies and on catalysts which act via such non-transient interactions.

Layer-by-Layer Nanoparticle Assembly for Biomedicine: Mechanisms, Technologies, and Advancement via Acoustofluidics

The deposition of thin films plays a crucial role in surface engineering, tailoring structural modifications, and functionalization across diverse applications. Layer-by-layer self-assembly, a prominent thin-film deposition method, has witnessed substantial growth since its mid-20th-century inception, driven by the discovery of eligible materials and innovative assembly technologies. Of these materials, micro- and nanoscopic substrates have received far less interest than their macroscopic counterparts; however, this is changing. The catalogue of eligible materials, including nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymers, proteins, cells and liposomes, along with some well-established layer-by-layer technologies, have combined to unlock impactful applications in biomedicine, as well as other areas like food fortification, and water remediation. To access these fields, several well-established technologies have been used, including tangential flow filtration, fluidized bed, atomization, electrophoretic assembly, and dielectrophoresis. Despite the invention of these technologies, the field of particle layer-by-layer still requires further technological development to achieve a high-yield, automatable, and industrially ready process, a requirement for the diverse, reactionary field of biomedicine and high-throughput pharmaceutical industry. This review provides a background on layer-by-layer, focusing on how its constituent building blocks and bonding mechanisms enable unmatched versatility. The discussion then extends to established and recent technologies employed for coating micro- and nanoscopic matter, evaluating their drawbacks and advantages, and highlighting promising areas in microfluidic approaches, where one distinctly auspicious technology emerges, acoustofluidics. The review also explores the potential and demonstrated application of acoustofluidics in layer-by-layer technology, as well as analyzing existing acoustofluidic technologies beyond LbL coating in areas such as cell trapping, cell sorting, and multidimensional particle manipulation. Finally, the review concludes with future perspectives on layer-by-layer nanoparticle coating and the potential impact of integrating acoustofluidic methods.

A Halogen-Bond-Driven Artificial Chloride-Selective Channel Constructed from 5-Iodoisophthalamide-based Molecules

Despite considerable emphasis on advancing artificial ion channels, progress is constrained by the limited availability of small molecules with the necessary attributes of self-assembly and ion selectivity. In this study, a library of small molecules based on 5-haloisophthalamide and a non-halogenated isophthalamide were examined for their ion transport properties across the lipid bilayer membranes, and the finding demonstrates that the di-hexyl-substituted 5-iodoisophthalamide derivative exhibits the highest level of activity. Furthermore, it was established that the highest active compound facilitates the selective chloride transport that occurs via an antiport-mediated mechanism. The crystal structure of the compound unveils a distinctive self-assembly of molecules, forming a zig-zag channel pore that is well-suited for the permeation of anions. Planar bilayer conductance measurements proved the formation of chloride selective channels. A molecular dynamics simulation study, relying on the self-assembled component derived from the crystal structure, affirmed the paramount significance of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the formation of supramolecular barrel-rosette structures that span the bilayer. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the transport of chloride across the lipid bilayer membrane is facilitated by the synergistic effects of halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding within the channel.

Interplay of Drug-Polymer Interactions and Release Performance for HPMCAS-Based Amorphous Solid Dispersions

The interplay between drug and polymer chemistry and its impact on drug release from an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) is a relatively underexplored area. Herein, the release rates of several drugs of diverse chemistry from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS)-based ASDs were explored using surface area normalized dissolution. The tendency of the drug to form an insoluble complex with HPMCAS was determined through coprecipitation experiments. The role of pH and the extent of drug ionization were probed to evaluate the role of electrostatic interactions in complex formation. Relationships between the extent of complexation and the drug release rate from an ASD were observed, whereby the drugs could be divided into two groups. Drugs with a low extent of insoluble complex formation with HPMCAS tended to be neutral or anionic and showed reasonable release at pH 6.8 even at higher drug loadings. Cationic drugs formed insoluble complexes with HPMCAS and showed poor release when formulated as an ASD. Thus, and somewhat counterintuitively, a weakly basic drug showed a reduced release rate from an ASD at a bulk solution pH where it was ionized, relative to when unionized. The opposite trend was observed in the absence of polymer for the neat amorphous drug. In conclusion, electrostatic interactions between HPMCAS and lipophilic cationic drugs led to insoluble complex formation, which in turn resulted in ASDs with poor release performance.

Dioxygen-halogen bonding exemplified by crystalline peroxosolvates of N,N'-bis(haloacetyl) bispidines

The halogen bonding in molecular crystals and supramolecular assemblies has been widely investigated. Special attention is given to the molecular structures capable of simultaneously exhibiting different types of non-covalent interactions, including conventional hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds. This paper systematically analyzes crystalline peroxosolvates of bispidine-based bis-amide derivatives, containing haloacetic acid residues, namely previously reported 1,1'-(1,5-dimethyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(2-iodooethanone) peroxosolvate C13H20I2N2O2·H2O2 (1) and four new crystalline compounds, 1,1'-(1,5-dimethyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(2-bromoethanone) peroxosolvate C13H20Br2N2O2·H2O2 (2), 1,1'-(9-hydroperoxy-9-hydroxy-1,5-dimethyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(2-iodoethanone) peroxosolvate C13H20I2N2O5·0.5H2O2 (3), 1,1'-(9-hydroperoxy-9-hydroxy-1,5-dimethyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(2-bromoethanone) peroxosolvate C13H20Br2N2O5·H2O2 (4), and 1,1'-(9-hydroperoxy-9-hydroxy-1,5-dimethyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(2-chloroethanone) peroxosolvate C13H20Cl2N2O5·H2O2 (5). Compounds 2-5 were synthesized for the first time and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry (SCXRD). To the best of our knowledge, 3-5 are unprecedented crystalline hydrogen peroxide adducts of organic hydroperoxides (R-OOH). Short intermolecular contacts between halogen and hydroperoxo oxygen atoms were found in 1-3. The halogen bonding of C-I(Br) fragments with dioxygen species in compounds 1-3 as well as in the previously reported cocrystal of diacetone diperoxide with triodotrinitrobenzene (6) was identified through reduced density gradient analysis, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and Bader analysis of crystalline electron density. The interactions were quantified using the electron density topological properties acquired from the periodic DFT calculations and evaluated to lie in the range of 9-19 kJ mol-1. A distinctive spectral feature was revealed for this type of interaction, involving a red shift of the characteristic O-O stretching vibration by about 6 cm-1, which appeared in IR spectra as a narrow low-intensity band in the region 837-872 cm-1.

Halogen Bonds of Halogen(I) Ions─Where Are We and Where to Go?

Halenium ions, X+, are particularly strong halogen-bond donors that interact with two Lewis bases simultaneously to form linear [D···X···D]+-type halonium complexes. Their three-center, four-electron halogen bond is both fundamentally interesting and technologically valuable as it tames the reactivity of halogen(I) ions, opening up new horizons in a variety of fields including synthetic organic and supramolecular chemistry. Understanding this bonding situation enables the development of improved halogen(I) transfer reactions and of advanced functional materials. Following a decade of investigations of basic principles, the range of applications is now rapidly widening. In this Perspective, we assess the status of the field and identify its key advances and the main bottlenecks. Clearing common misunderstandings that may hinder future progress, we aim to inspire and direct future research efforts.

Quasi-atomic orbital analysis of halogen bonding interactions

A quasi-atomic orbital analysis of the halogen bonded NH3⋯XF complexes (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) is performed to gain insight into the electronic properties associated with these σ-hole interactions. It is shown that significant sharing of electrons between the nitrogen lone pair of the ammonia molecule and the XF molecule occurs, resulting in a weakening of the X-F bond. In addition, the N-X bond shows increasing covalent character as the size of the halogen atom X increases. While the Mulliken outer complex NH3⋯XF appears to be overall the main species, the strength of the covalent interaction of the N-X bond becomes increasingly similar to that of the N-X bond in the [NH3X]+ cation as the size of X increases.

Elucidating mechanochemical reactivity of a ternary halogen-bonded cocrystal system by computational and calorimetric studies

Discovery of a halogen-bonded ternary cocrystal of 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene with pyrazine and triphenylphosphine sulfide has revealed a complex landscape of multicomponent phases, all achievable by mechanochemical interconversion. The observed solid-state reaction pathways were explained by periodic density-functional calculations and comprehensive intermolecular interaction analysis, supported by dissolution calorimetry measurements.

Two and three-dimensional halogen-bonded frameworks: self-assembly influenced by crystallization solvents

In this paper, two types of solid phase 2D and 3D XBOFs were selectively constructed from identical building blocks of tetraphenylmethane tetrapyridine derivative and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene by changing the crystallization solvent. This 3D XBOF is a novel hybrid supramolecular organic framework with the synergistic control of hydrogen and halogen bonds.

Halogen Bonding Involving Isomeric Isocyanide/Nitrile Groups

2,3,5,6-Tetramethyl-1,4-diisocyanobenzene (1), 1,4-diisocyanobenzene (2), and 1,4-dicyanobenzene (3) were co-crystallized with 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene (1,3,5-FIB) to give three cocrystals, 1·1,3,5-FIB, 2·2(1,3,5-FIB), and 3·2(1,3,5-FIB), which were studied by X-ray diffraction. A common feature of the three structures is the presence of I···Cisocyanide or I···Nnitrile halogen bonds (HaBs), which occurs between an iodine σ-hole and the isocyanide C-(or the nitrile N-) atom. The diisocyanide and dinitrile cocrystals 2·2(1,3,5-FIB) and 3·2(1,3,5-FIB) are isostructural, thus providing a basis for accurate comparison of the two types of noncovalent linkages of C≡N/N≡C groups in the composition of structurally similar entities and in one crystal environment. The bonding situation was studied by a set of theoretical methods. Diisocyanides are more nucleophilic than the dinitrile and they exhibit stronger binding to 1,3,5-FIB. In all structures, the HaBs are mostly determined by the electrostatic interactions, but the dispersion and induction components also provide a noticeable contribution and make the HaBs attractive. Charge transfer has a small contribution (<5%) to the HaB and it is higher for the diisocyanide than for the dinitrile systems. At the same time, diisocyanide and dinitrile structures exhibit typical electron-donor and π-acceptor properties in relation to the HaB donor.

Combined NMR Spectroscopy and Quantum-Chemical Calculations in Fluorescent 1,2,3-Triazole-4-carboxylic Acids Fine Structures Analysis

The peculiarities of the optical properties of 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole acids and their sodium salts were investigated in different solvents (1,4-dioxane, dimethyl sulfoxide DMSO, methanol MeOH) and in mixtures with water. The results were discussed in terms of the molecular structure formed by inter- and intramolecular noncovalent interactions (NCIs) and their ability to ionize in anions. Theoretical calculations using the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) were carried out in different solvents to support the results. In polar and nonpolar solvents (DMSO, 1,4-dioxane), fluorescence was provided by strong neutral associates. Protic MeOH can weaken the acid molecules' association, forming other fluorescent species. The fluorescent species in water exhibited similar optical characteristics to those of triazole salts; therefore, their anionic character can be assumed. Experimental ¹H and ¹³C-NMR spectra were compared to their corresponding calculated spectra using the Gauge-Independent Atomic Orbital (GIAO) method and several relationships were established. All these findings showed that the obtained photophysical properties of the 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole acids noticeably depend on the environment and, therefore, are good candidates as sensors for the identification of analytes with labile protons.

Advanced supramolecular design for direct ink writing of soft materials

The exciting advancements in 3D-printing of soft materials are changing the landscape of materials development and fabrication. Among various 3D-printers that are designed for soft materials fabrication, the direct ink writing (DIW) system is particularly attractive for chemists and materials scientists due to the mild fabrication conditions, compatibility with a wide range of organic and inorganic materials, and the ease of multi-materials 3D-printing. Inks for DIW need to possess suitable viscoelastic properties to allow for smooth extrusion and be self-supportive after printing, but molecularly facilitating 3D printability to functional materials remains nontrivial. While supramolecular binding motifs have been increasingly used for 3D-printing, these inks are largely optimized empirically for DIW. Hence, this review aims to establish a clear connection between the molecular understanding of the supramolecularly bound motifs and their viscoelastic properties at bulk. Herein, extrudable (but not self-supportive) and 3D-printable (self-supportive) polymeric materials that utilize noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, host-guest inclusion, metal-ligand coordination, micro-crystallization, and van der Waals interaction, have been discussed in detail. In particular, the rheological distinctions between extrudable and 3D-printable inks have been discussed from a supramolecular design perspective. Examples shown in this review also highlight the exciting macroscale functions amplified from the molecular design. Challenges associated with the hierarchical control and characterization of supramolecularly designed DIW inks are also outlined. The perspective of utilizing supramolecular binding motifs in soft materials DIW printing has been discussed. This review serves to connect researchers across disciplines to develop innovative solutions that connect top-down 3D-printing and bottom-up supramolecular design to accelerate the development of 3D-print soft materials for a sustainable future.

Synthesis of cationic polymer decorated with halogen for highly efficient trapping 99TcO4-/ReO4. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2023;443:130325. [PMID: 36372023 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2022.130325]

The elimination of anion is of great importance from radioactive nuclear waste containing ⁹⁹TcO₄^- by rationally designing anion-scavenging materials with high density of charge and more accessible adsorption sites. Herein, a tailor-made cationic organic polymer with donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, namely TrDCPN, was successfully synthesized by rationally modifying the benzimidazole unit for efficient trapping the perrhenate (ReO₄^-) as a ⁹⁹Tc surrogate. Systematic control of the skeleton affect enables the material to integrate a variety of features, surmounting the long-term challenge of ⁹⁹TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- remediation under extreme conditions of high acid/base and high ionic strength. Furthermore, the TrDCPN shows excellent affinity toward ReO₄^- in the existence of large excess of competitive anions (SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and PO₄^3-etc.) as well as promising reusability for trapping ReO₄^-. The excellent stability and separation were derived from the introduction of large conjugated modules, triazine core and hydrophobic. More importantly, the synthetic cationic organic polymer with D-A feature was first proved that the introduction of halogen can effectively enhance the backbone charge, and increase the adsorption capacity by synergy of ion exchange, electrostatic interaction and δ hole-anion interaction. The adsorption capacity of TrDCPN can be up to 420.3 mg/g and reach equilibrium within 20 min. It is noteworthy that TrDCPN successfully immobilizes ReO₄^- from simulated Hanford waste with a high separation efficiency of 93 %, providing a new paradigm for material design to dispose of the problem of radioactive pollutants in the environment.

Computationally rational design of metal-involving halogen bonds with π-covalency: Structures and bonding analysis

Traditional π-covalent interactions have been proved in the non-metal halogen bond adducts formed by chloride and halogenated triphenylamine-based radical cations. In this study, we have rationally designed two metal-involving halogen bond adducts with π-covalency property, such as [L1-Pd···I-PTZ]⁺ (i.e., 1) and [L2-Pd···I-PTZ]⁺ (i.e., 2), in which the square-planar palladium complexes serve as halogen bond acceptor and 3,7-diiodo-10H-phenothiazine radical cation (i.e., [I-PTZ]^•+ ) acts as halogen bond donor. Noncovalent interaction analysis and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis revealed that there are notable halogen bond interactions along the Pd···I direction without genuine chemical bond formed in both designed adducts. Energy decomposition analysis together with natural orbital for chemical valence calculations were performed to gain insight into their bonding nature, which demonstrated the presence of remarkable π-covalent interactions and σ-covalent interactions in both 1 and 2. We therefore proposed a new strategy for building the metal-involving halogen bonds with π-covalency property, which will help the further development of new types of halogen bonds.

Dative B←N bonds based crystalline organic framework with permanent porosity for acetylene storage and separation

The utilization of dative B←N bonds for the creation of crystalline organic framework (BNOF) has increasingly received intensive interest; however, the shortage of permanent porosity is an obstacle that must be overcome to guarantee their application as porous materials. Here, we report the first microporous crystalline framework, BNOF-1, that is assembled through sole monomers, which can be scalably synthesized by the cheap 4-pyridine boronic acid. The 2D networks of BNOF-1 were stacked in parallel to generate a highly porous supramolecular open framework, which possessed not only the highest BET surface area of 1345 m² g^-1 amongst all of the BNOFs but also features a record-high uptake of C₂H₂ and CO₂ in covalent organic framework (COF) materials to date. Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrated that BNOF-1 material can efficiently separate C₂H₂/CO₂ mixtures. In addition, the network can be regenerated in organic solvents with no loss in performance, making its solution processable. We believe that BNOF-1 would greatly diversify the reticular chemistry and open new avenues for the application of BNOFs.

Shedding Light on the Vibrational Signatures in Halogen-Bonded Graphitic Carbon Nitride Building Blocks

The relative contributions of halogen and hydrogen bonding to the interaction between graphitic carbon nitride monomers and halogen bond (XB) donors containing C-X and C≡C bonds were evaluated using computational vibrational spectroscopy. Conventional probes into select vibrational stretching frequencies can often lead to disconnected results. To elucidate this behavior, local mode analyses were performed on the XB donors and complexes identified previously at the M06-2X/aVDZ-PP level of theory. Due to coupling between low and high energy C-X vibrations, the C≡C stretch is deemed a better candidate when analyzing XB complex properties or detecting XB formation. The local force constants support this conclusion, as the C≡C values correlate much better with the σ-hole magnitude than their C-X counterparts. The intermolecular local stretching force constants were also assessed, and it was found that attractive forces other than halogen bonding play a supporting role in complex formation.

Halogen-bonded shape memory polymers

Halogen bonding (XB), a non-covalent interaction between an electron-deficient halogen atom and a Lewis base, is widely adopted in organic synthesis and supramolecular crystal engineering. However, the roadmap towards materials applications is hindered by the challenges in harnessing this relatively weak intermolecular interaction to devise human-commanded stimuli-responsive soft materials. Here, we report a liquid crystalline network comprising permanent covalent crosslinks and dynamic halogen bond crosslinks, which possess reversible thermo-responsive shape memory behaviour. Our findings suggest that I···N halogen bond, a paradigmatic motif in crystal engineering studies, enables temporary shape fixation at room temperature and subsequent shape recovery in response to human body temperature. We demonstrate versatile shape programming of the halogen-bonded polymer networks through human-hand operation and propose a micro-robotic injection model for complex 1D to 3D shape morphing in aqueous media at 37 °C. Through systematic structure-property-performance studies, we show the necessity of the I···N crosslinks in driving the shape memory effect. The halogen-bonded shape memory polymers expand the toolbox for the preparation of smart supramolecular constructs with tailored mechanical properties and thermoresponsive behaviour, for the needs of, e.g., future medical devices.

Construction of Halogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks (XOFs) as Novel Efficient Iodinating Agents

The structural diversity and the various applications of organic frameworks have attracted much attention in recent years. Recently, halogen-bonded organic frameworks (XOFs) became a novel member of these materials, thereby facilitating the exploration of the interesting structures as well as functions. Here we present two types of [N···I⁺···N] connected XOFs (XOF-TPy and XOF-TPEB) with two tridentate ligands as building blocks. XOF-TPy and XOF-TPEB were characterized by ¹H NMR, UV-vis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), IR, SEM, and HR-TEM. Two-dimensional (2D) structural models were established based on powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data and theoretical simulations. Further experiment showed that these XOFs were excellent iodinating agents for the substituted arylboronic acids with either the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups upon heating without any catalyst. This research not only brings further understanding to the XOFs but also extends the applications of XOFs.

Halogen Bonding Involving Gold Nucleophiles in Different Oxidation States

A single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of diaryliodonium tetrachloroaurates (or, in the recent terminology, tetrachloridoaurates), [(p-XC₆H₄)₂I][AuCl₄] (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2), was performed for 1 (the structure is denoted as 1a to show similarity with the isomorphic structure 2a) and two polymorphs─2a (obtained from MeOH) and 2b (from 1,2-C₂H₄Cl₂). Examination of the XRD data for these three structures revealed 2-center C-X···Au^III (X = Cl and Br) and 3-center bifurcated C-Br···(Cl-Au) halogen bonding (abbreviated as XB) between the p-Cl or p-Br atoms of the diaryliodonium cations and the gold(III) atom of [AuCl₄]^-. The noncovalent nature of Au^III-involving interactions, the nucleophilicity of the gold(III) atoms, and the electrophilic role of p-X atoms of the diaryliodonium cations in the XBs were studied by a set of complementary computational methods. Combined experimental and theoretical studies allowed the recognition of the d-nucleophilicity of the [d⁸Au^III] atom which, regardless of its rather substantial formal 3+ charge, can function as a d-nucleophilic partner of XB. This conclusion was also supported by theoretical calculations performed for the structures' refcodes BINXOM and ICSD 62511; the obtained data verified the nucleophilicity of Au^III toward a K⁺ ions or a σ-(Cl)-hole, respectively. All our results, together with consideration of relevant literature, indicate that gold atoms in the three oxidation states (0, I, and even III) exhibit nucleophilicity in XBs.

Mechanism for the Halogenation and Azidation of Lysine Catalyzed by Non-heme Iron BesD Enzyme

Selective halogenation is important in synthetic chemistry. BesD, a new member of the non-heme Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate (αKG)-dependent halogenase family, can activate the sp3 C-H bond and halogenate lysine, in particular without a carrier protein. Using the density functional calculations, a chlorination mechanism in BesD has been proposed, mainly including the formation of Cl-Fe(IV)=O through the αKG decarboxylation, the isomerization of Cl-Fe(IV)=O, the substrate hydrogen abstraction by Fe(IV)=O, and the rebound of chloro to the substrate carbon radical. The hydrogen abstraction is rate-limiting. The isomerization of Cl-Fe(IV)=O is essential for the hydrogen abstraction and the chiral selectivity. The BesD-catalyzed bromination and azidation of lysine adopt the same mechanism as the chlorination. The hardly-changed overall barriers indicate that the introduced ligands (X) do not affect the reaction rate significantly, implying that the X-introduced reactions catalyzed by BesD may be extended to other X anions.

Solid-state multinuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray crystallographic investigation of the phosphorus...iodine halogen bond in a bis(dicyclohexylphenylphosphine)(1,6-diiodoperfluorohexane) cocrystal

Halogen bonding to phosphorus atoms remains uncommon, with relatively few examples reported in the literature. Here, the preparation and investigation of the cocrystal bis(dicyclohexylphenylphosphine)(1,6-diiodoperfluorohexane) by X-ray crystallography and solid-state multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is described. The crystal structure features two crystallographically unique C-I...P halogen bonds [d_I...P = 3.090 (5) Å, 3.264 (5) Å] and crystallographic disorder of one of the 1,6-diiodoperfluorohexane molecules. The first of these is the shortest and most linear I...P halogen bond reported to date. ¹³C, ¹⁹F, and ³¹P magic angle spinning solid-state NMR spectra are reported. A ³¹P chemical shift change of -7.0 p.p.m. in the cocrystal relative to pure dicyclohexylphenylphosphine, consistent with halogen bond formation, is noted. This work establishes iodoperfluoroalkanes as viable halogen bond donors when paired with phosphorus acceptors, and also shows that dicyclohexylphenylphosphine can act as a practical halogen bond acceptor.

Crystal Structures of Lignocellulosic Furfuryl Biobased Polydiacetylenes with Hydrogen-Bond Networks: Influencing the Direction of Solid-State Polymerization through Modification of the Spacer Length

We present the topochemical polymerization of two lignocellulosic biobased diacetylenes (DAs) that only differ by an alkyl spacer length of 1 methylene (n = 1) or 3 methylene units (n = 3) between the diyne and carbamate functionalities. Their crystalline molecular organizations have the distinctive feature of being suitable for polymerization in two potential directions, either parallel or skewed to the hydrogen-bonded (HB) network. However, single-crystal structures of the final polydiacetylenes (PDAs) demonstrate that the resulting orientation of the conjugated backbones is different for these two derivatives, which lead to HB supramolecular polymer networks (2D nanosheets) for n = 1 and to independent linear PDA chains with intramolecular HBs for n = 3. Thus, spacer length modification can be considered a new strategy to influence the molecular orientation of conjugated polymer chains, which is crucial for developing the next generation of materials with optimal mechanical and optoelectronic properties. Calculations were performed on model oligodiacetylenes to evaluate the cooperativity effect of HBs in the different crystalline supramolecular packing motifs and the energy profile related to the torsion of the conjugated backbone of a PDA chain (i.e., its ability to adopt planar or helical conformations).

Solvent‐Influenced Fragmentations in Free‐Standing Three‐Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Hydrophobicity Switching

The ordered open organic frameworks membranes are attractive candidates for flow‐assisted molecular separations. The physicochemical properties of such membranes mostly depend on their selectively chosen functional building blocks. In this work, we have introduced a novel concept of functional switchability of three‐dimensional covalent organic framework (3D‐COF) membranes through a simple solvent‐influenced fragmentation method. This room‐temperature interfacial synthesis provides free‐standing 3D‐COF membranes with distinct physicochemical properties from the same building monomers. Notably, the change of solvent from chloroform to ethyl acetate switches the membrane property from hydrophilic (water contact angle 60°) to hydrophobic (water contact angle 142°) nature. The hydrophobic 3D‐COF membrane selectively passes oil molecules from an oil–water emulsion with a gravitational flux of 1536 L m⁻² h⁻¹.

Halogen-Bonded Driven Tetra-Substituted Benzene Dimers and Trimers: Potential Hosts for Metal Ions

Cyclic dimers and trimers of tetra-substituted benzenes, ((HOOC)2-C6H2-(NHI)2), are selected as convenient model systems for investigating NI…O=C halogen bond strength and cooperativity. The four substituents in benzene are chosen so that two of them act as halogen bond acceptors (COOH) and two act as halogen bond donors (NHI), as shown in the graphical abstract below. The potential for metal ion binding by each of the halogen-bonded aggregates is also investigated using the monoatomic sodium ion, Na+. Density functional theory calculations performed using the wB97XD functional and the DGDZVP basis set confirmed the ability of halogen bonding to drive the formation of the cyclic dimers and trimers of the model system chosen for this study. Evidence of halogen bond cooperativity is seen, for example, in a 9% shortening of each NI…O=C halogen bond distance with a corresponding 53% increase in the respective critical point density value, ρNI…O=C. Cooperativity also results in a 36% increase in the magnitude of the complexation energy per halogen-bond of the trimer relative to that of the dimer. The results of this study confirm the potential for binding a single Na+ ion by either the dimer or the trimer through their respective halogen-bond networks. Binding of two metal ions was shown to be possible by the dimer. Likewise, the trimer was also found to bind three metal ions. Lastly, the overall structure of the halogen-bonded dimer or trimer endured after complexation of the Na+ ions.

Programmed Macromolecular Assembly by Dipole-Dipole Interactions with Aggregation-Induced Enhanced Emission in Aqueous Medium

Self-assembling polymers by bioinspired directional supramolecular interactions currently hold great scientific and technological interests. Herein, we report an unorthodox strategy based on a dipole-dipole interaction-mediated extended antiparallel dipolar assembly of a model merocyanine (MC) dye for maneuvering the self-assembly of a highly water-soluble MC-functionalized block copolymer (P2). Unlike traditional amphiphilic block copolymers featuring distinct hydrophobic segments (flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon chains or rigid nonpolar aromatic scaffolds), P2 comprises polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (PEG) as a hydrophilic block and an unconventional structure-directing acrylate block functionalized with polar MC-dyes in the side chains of every repeat unit. In the absence of any additional hydrophobic assistance, P2 spontaneously self-assembles in water through the continuous opposite alignment of its pendant MCs by multiple dipole-dipole interactions to cancel out their ground state dipole moments, which initially generates an H-aggregated species with ill-defined morphology (Aggregate 1). Upon thermal annealing, Aggregate 1 reorganizes into higher-order core-shell nanodisc-like structures (Aggregate 2) driven by the orthogonal π-stacking interactions of the rigid aromatic framework derived from the extended cofacial MC-stacks. The aromatic interiors of the nanodiscs gain colloidal stability from the externally decorated hydrophilic PEG chains. While the initially formed Aggregate 1, predominantly by dipole-dipole interactions, showed remarkable thermal stability due to the cooperative effect of the polymer chain, the hierarchical assembly guided by relatively weaker dispersion forces of the MC-stacked π-surfaces could be tailored by dilution or thermal treatment. Such organized packing of pendant MCs by the dual effect of dipole-dipole interactions and π-stacking conferred several exciting properties to the P2 assembly in water. Long-range ordered antiparallel stacking of the pendant MCs rendered outstanding aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties to the resultant nanostructures in water with increased fluorescence lifetime, quantum yield, and Stokes shift compared to nonaggregating P2 in CHCl₃. The remarkable thermal and kinetic stability of the nanodiscs, their guest loading ability, and very low critical aggregation concentration (CAC) were demonstrated by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies with an encapsulated donor-acceptor dye pair.

Synthesis and cationic polymerization of halogen bonding vinyl ether monomers

Halogen bonding is rapidly becoming recognized as a viable and useful intermolecular interaction in supramolecular chemistry. While various monomers amenable to radical polymerization methods containing halogen bonding donors have been developed, this study aims to expand the type of monomers that incorporate this intermolecular interaction to facilitate use of cationic polymerization by developing three novel vinyl ether monomers containing halogen bonding donor moieties: 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenoxyethyl vinyl ether (C2I), 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenoxybutyl vinyl ether (C4I), and 2-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether (O3I). Well controlled cationic polymerization is achievable through the use of a proton trap, 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine. The use of SnCl₄ as a co-Lewis acid was found to accelerate the reaction. Between the three monomers, the difference in the chain length is shown to influence the reaction rate, with the longest chain demonstrating the fastest polymerization. Initial studies of the halogen bonding ability shows that halogen bonding exists for all three monomers but is most pronounced in C4I. The polymerized vinyl ethers also exhibit halogen bonding. Due to the ease of synthesis and polymerization, these are promising new monomers to increase functionality available for polymers synthesized using cationic polymerization.

Stimuli Responsive Materials Supported by Orthogonal Hydrogen and Halogen Bonding or I···Alkene Interaction

Smart materials represent an elegant class of (macro)-molecules endowed with the ability to react to chemical/physical changes in the environment. Herein, we prepared new photo responsive azobenzenes possessing halogen bond donor groups. The X-ray structures of two molecules highlight supramolecular organizations governed by unusual noncovalent bonds. In azo dye I-azo-NO₂, the nitro group is engaged in orthogonal H···O···I halogen and hydrogen bonding, linking the units in parallel undulating chains. As far as compound I–azo–NH–MMA is concerned, a non-centrosymmetric pattern is formed due to a very rare I···π interaction involving the alkene group supplemented by hydrogen bonds. The Cambridge Structural Database contains only four structures showing the same I···CH₂=C contact. For all compounds, an ¹⁹F-NMR spectroscopic analysis confirms the formation of halogen bonds in solution through a recognition process with chloride anion, and the reversible photo-responsiveness is demonstrated upon exposing a solution to UV light irradiation. Finally, the intermediate I–azo–NH₂ also shows a pronounced color change due to pH variation. These azobenzenes are thereby attractive building blocks to design future multi-stimuli responsive materials for highly functional devices.

Metal Centers as Nucleophiles: Oxymoron of Halogen Bond-Involving Crystal Engineering

This review highlights recent studies discovering unconventional halogen bonding (HaB) that involves positively charged metal centers. These centers provide their filled d‐orbitals for HaB, and thus behave as nucleophilic components toward the noncovalent interaction. This role of some electron‐rich transition metal centers can be considered an oxymoron in the sense that the metal is, in most cases, formally cationic; consequently, its electron donor function is unexpected. The importance of Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] (Ha=halogen; M is Group 9 (Rh, Ir), 10 (Ni, Pd, Pt), or 11 (Cu, Au)) interactions in crystal engineering is emphasized by showing remarkable examples (reported and uncovered by our processing of the Cambridge Structural Database), where this Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] directional interaction guides the formation of solid supramolecular assemblies of different dimensionalities.

Uracil Derivatives for Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals

Among non-covalent interactions, halogen bonding is emerging as a new powerful tool for supramolecular self-assembly. Here, along with a green and effective method, we report three new halogen-bonded cocrystals containing uracil derivatives and 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene as X-bond donor coformer. These multicomponent solids were prepared both by solvent-drop grinding and solution methods and further characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, and thermal methods (TGA-DSC). In order to study the relative importance of hydrogen versus halogen bonds in the crystal packing, computational methods were applied.

Halogen bonding effect on electrochemical anion oxidation in ionic liquids

Three Ionic liquids (ILs) based on an imidazolium core have been compared and used as solvents for the oxidation of various anions. Electrochemical experiments as well as NMR titrations and X-ray diffraction analyses unambiguously confirm the crucial role of non-covalent halogen bonding on the oxidation potentials and consequently the electrochemical window of the respective ILs.

Studies of Nature of Uncommon Bifurcated I-I···(I-M) Metal-Involving Noncovalent Interaction in Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Isocyanide Cocrystals

Two isostructural trans-[MI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 (M = Pd or Pt; CNXyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide) metallopolymeric cocrystals containing uncommon bifurcated iodine···(metal-iodide) contact were obtained. In addition to classical halogen bonding, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a rare type of metal-involved stabilizing contact in both cocrystals. The nature of the noncovalent contact was studied computationally (via DFT, electrostatic surface potential, electron localization function, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and noncovalent interactions plot methods). Studies confirmed that the I···I halogen bond is the strongest noncovalent interaction in the systems, followed by weaker I···M interaction. The electrophilic and nucleophilic nature of atoms participating in I···M interaction was studied with ED/ESP minima analysis. In trans-[PtI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, Pt atoms act as weak nucleophiles in I···Pt interaction. In the case of trans-[PdI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, electrophilic/nucleophilic roles of Pd and I are not clear, and thus the quasimetallophilic nature of the I···Pd interaction was suggested.

An expanded halogen bonding scale using astatine

As a non-covalent interaction, halogen bonding is now acknowledged to be useful in all fields where the control of intermolecular recognition plays a pivotal role. Halogen-bond basicity scales allow quantification of the halogen bonding of referential donors with organic functional groups from a thermodynamic point of view. Herein we present the pK BAtI basicity scale to provide the community an overview of halogen-bond acceptor strength towards astatine, the most potent halogen-bond donor element. This experimental scale is erected on the basis of complexation constants measured between astatine monoiodide (AtI) and sixteen selected Lewis bases. It spans over 6 log units and culminates with a value of 5.69 ± 0.32 for N,N,N',N'-tetramethylthiourea. On this scale, the carbon π-bases are the weakest acceptors, the oxygen derivatives cover almost two-thirds of the scale, and sulphur bases exhibit the highest AtI basicity. Regarding the applications of 211At in targeted radionuclide therapy, stronger labelling of carrier agents could be envisaged on the basis of the pK BAtI scale.

Astatine Facing Janus: Halogen Bonding vs. Charge-Shift Bonding

The nature of halogen-bond interactions was scrutinized from the perspective of astatine, potentially the strongest halogen-bond donor atom. In addition to its remarkable electronic properties (e.g., its higher aromaticity compared to benzene), C₆At₆ can be involved as a halogen-bond donor and acceptor. Two-component relativistic calculations and quantum chemical topology analyses were performed on C₆At₆ and its complexes as well as on their iodinated analogues for comparative purposes. The relativistic spin–orbit interaction was used as a tool to disclose the bonding patterns and the mechanisms that contribute to halogen-bond interactions. Despite the stronger polarizability of astatine, halogen bonds formed by C₆At₆ can be comparable or weaker than those of C₆I₆. This unexpected finding comes from the charge-shift bonding character of the C–At bonds. Because charge-shift bonding is connected to the Pauli repulsion between the bonding σ electrons and the σ lone-pair of astatine, it weakens the astatine electrophilicity at its σ-hole (reducing the charge transfer contribution to halogen bonding). These two antinomic characters, charge-shift bonding and halogen bonding, can result in weaker At-mediated interactions than their iodinated counterparts.

Chalcogen vs Halogen Bonding Catalysis in a Water-Bridge-Cocatalyzed Nitro-Michael Reaction

Recently, a tellurium-based chalcogen-bond-catalyzed nitro-Michael reaction was reported ( Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 16923), taking advantage of the strong Lewis acidity of the catalyst. This species was found to be more effective than an analogous iodine-based halogen bond organocatalyst. Herein, we present a detailed mechanistic and kinetic analysis of these catalytic cycles including the influence of the solvent (and the performance of different intrinsic solvation models). While the chalcogen bonding interaction is fundamental to activate the C-C bond formation, we found that the presence of a two-water molecular bridge is critical to allow the following, otherwise high-energy proton transfer step. Even though the iodine-based halogen bonding interaction is stronger than the tellurium-based chalcogen bonding one, which makes the former a stronger Lewis acid and hence in principle a more efficient catalyst, solvation effects explain the smaller energy span of the latter.

Halogen Bonding of Organoiodines and Triiodide Anions in (NMe3 Ph)+ Salts

To study the role of the triiodide (I₃ )^- anion in establishing various halogen bonding patterns, the trimethylphenylammonium iodide (NMe₃ PhI) salt was reacted with diiodine (I₂ ) in the presence of a series of organoiodines, tetraiodoethylene (TIE), 1,2-diiodo-3,4,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (o-F₄ DIB), 1,4-diiodo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (p-F₄ DIB), and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (1,3,5-F₃ I₃ B) to form cocrystals of the organoiodines with the trimethylphenylammonium triiodide (NMe₃ PhI₃ ) salt. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed the (I₃ )^- anion served as a halogen bond acceptor for the organoiodine donors, forming a variety of 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D packing arrangements through I⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonding. Significant asymmetry was observed within the (I₃ )^- anion. The melting points of the cocrystalline materials, as determined by simultaneous DSC/TGA, ranged from 43 °C to 119 °C and showed a strong dependence on the identity of the organoiodine incorporated into the crystal lattice.

Bifurcated Halogen Bonding Involving Two Rhodium(I) Centers as an Integrated σ-Hole Acceptor

The complexes [RhX(COD)]2 (X = Cl, Br; COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) form cocrystals with σ-hole iodine donors. X-ray diffraction studies and extensive theoretical considerations indicate that the d z 2-orbitals of two positively charged rhodium(I) centers provide sufficient nucleophilicity to form a three-center halogen bond (XB) with the σ-hole donors. The two metal centers function as an integrated XB acceptor, providing assembly via a metal-involving XB.

A low cost, high accuracy method for halogen bonding complexes

The ONIOM scheme M052X/[Def2TZVP+Def2TZVPD.ECP(I)]:AM1 is shown to represent halogen bond (XB) geometries nearly as well as DFT while being more than two orders of magnitude faster in systems containing >40 atoms. This finding is shown to hold for 40 XB donors, which cover most known backbones, and for a range of neutral and anionic Lewis bases. Complexation free energies can be accurately computed using these geometries and a single-point energy calculation at the DFT level. This approach circumvents the unfavorable scaling of computing time associated with modeling large systems involving halogen bonding.

Fixation of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates by Halogen-Bonding Catalysis

Halogen bonding, parallel to hydrogen bonding, was introduced into the catalytic cycloaddition of carbon dioxide into epoxide (CCE) reactions. A series of halogen-bond donor (XBD) catalysts of N-iodopyridinium halide featured with N-I bond were synthesized and evaluated in CCE reactions. The optimal XBD catalyst, 4-(dimethylamino)-N-iodopyridinium bromide ([DMAPI]Br), under screened conditions at 100 °C, ambient pressure, and 1 mol % catalyst loading, realized 93 % conversion of styrene oxide into cyclic carbonate in 6 h. The substrate scope was successfully extended with excellent yields (mostly ≥93 %) and quantitative selectivity (more than 99 %). ¹ H NMR spectroscopy of the catalyst [DMAPI]Br on substrate epoxide certified that the N-I bond directly coordinated with the epoxide oxygen. A plausible mechanism of halogen-bonding catalysis was proposed, in which the DMAPI cation functioned as halogen-bond donor to activate the epoxide, and the counter anion bromide attacked the methylene carbon to initiate the ring-opening of the epoxide. CCE reactions promoted by N-iodopyridinium halide, exemplify a first case of halogen-bonding catalysis in epoxide activation and CO₂ transformation.
