Synthesis, structure, and characterisation of a ferromagnetically coupled dinuclear complex containing Co(II) ions in a high spin configuration and thiodiacetate and phenanthroline as ligands and of a series of isomorphous heterodinuclear complexes containing different Co : Zn ratios

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and characterisation of a dinuclear Co(II) compound with thiodiacetate (tda) and phenanthroline (phen) as ligands (1), and of a series of metal complexes isomorphous to 1 with different Co : Zn ratios (2, 4 : 1; 3, 1 : 1; 4, 1 : 4; 5, 1 : 10). General characterisation methodologies and X-ray data showed that all the synthesised complexes are isomorphous to Zn(II) and Cu(II) analogues (CSD codes: DUHXEL and BEBQII). 1 consists of centrosymmetric Co(II) ion dimers in which the ions are 3.214 Å apart, linked by two μ-O bridges. Each cobalt atom is in a distorted octahedral environment of the N2O3S type. UV-vis spectra of 1 and 5 are in line with high spin (S = 3/2) Co(II) ions in octahedral coordination and indicate that the electronic structure of both Co(II) ions in the dinuclear unit does not significantly change relative to that of the magnetically isolated Co(II) ion. EPR spectra of powder samples of 5 (Co : Zn ratio of 1 : 10) together with spectral simulation indicated high spin Co(II) ions with high rhombic distortion of the zfs [E/D = 0.31(1), D > 0]. DC magnetic susceptibility experiments on 1 and analysis of the data constraining the E/D value obtained by EPR yielded g = 2.595(7), |D| = 61(1) cm-1, and an intradimer ferromagnetic exchange coupling of J = 1.39(4) cm-1. EPR spectra as a function of Co : Zn ratio for both powder and single crystal samples confirmed that they result from two effective S' = 1/2 spins that interact through dipolar and isotropic exchange interactions to yield magnetically isolated S' = 1 centres and that interdimeric exchange interactions, putatively mediated by hydrophobic interactions between phen moieties, are negligible. The latter observation contrasts with that observed in the Cu(II) analogue, where a transition from S = 1 to S' = 1/2 was observed. Computational calculations indicated that the absence of the interdimeric exchange interaction in 1 is due to a lower Co(II) ion spin density delocalisation towards the metal ligands.

Spin Crossover and Fluorine-Specific Interactions in Metal Complexes of Terpyridines with Polyfluorocarbon Tails

In coordination chemistry and materials science, terpyridine ligands are of great interest, due to their ability to form stable complexes with a broad range of transition metal ions. We report three terpyridine ligands containing different perfluorocarbon (PFC) tails on the backbone and the corresponding FeII and CoII complexes. The CoII complexes display spin crossover close to ambient temperature, and the nature of this spin transition is influenced by the length of the PFC tail on the ligand backbone. The electrochemical properties of the metal complexes were investigated with cyclic voltammetry revealing one oxidation and several reduction processes. The fluorine-specific interactions were investigated by EPR measurements. Analysis of the EPR spectra of the complexes as microcrystalline powders and in solution reveals exchange-narrowed spectra without resolved hyperfine splittings arising from the 59 Co nucleus; this suggests complex aggregation in solution mediated by interactions of the PFC tails. Interestingly, addition of perfluoro-octanol in different ratios to the acetonitrile solution of the sample resulted in the disruption of the F ⋯ ${\cdots }$ F interactions of the tails. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of fluorine-specific interactions in metal complexes through EPR spectroscopy, as exemplified by exchange narrowing.

Molecular-Engineered Biradicals Based on the YIII-Phthalocyanine Platform

A mixed-ligand phthalocyanine/porphyrin yttrium(III) radical double-decker complex (DD) was synthesized using the custom-made 5,10,15-tris(4-methoxyphenyl)-20-(4-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)phenyl)porphyrin. The trimethylsilyl functionality was then used to couple two such complexes into biradicals through rigid tethers. Glaser coupling was used to synthesize a short-tethered biradical (C1) and Sonogashira coupling to synthesize longer-tethered ones (C2 and C3). Field-swept echo-detected (FSED), saturation recovery, and spin nutation-pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance experiments revealed marked similarities of the magnetic properties of DD with those of the parent [Y(pc)₂]^• complex, both in the solid state and in CD₂Cl₂/CDCl₃ 4:1 frozen glasses. FSED experiments on the biradicals C2 and C3 revealed a spectral broadening with respect to the spectra of DD and [Y(pc)₂]^• assigned to the effect of dipolar interactions in solution. Apart from the main resonance, satellite features were also observed, which were simulated with dipole-dipole pairs of shortest distances, suggesting spin delocalization on the organic tether. FSED experiments on C1 yielded spectral line shapes that could not be simulated as the integration of the off-resonance echoes was complicated by field-dependent modulations. While, for all dimers, the on-resonance spin nutation experiments yielded Rabi oscillations of the same frequencies, off-resonance nutations on C1 yielded Rabi oscillations that could be assigned to a M_S = -1 to M_S = 0 transition within a S = 1 multiplet. The DFT calculations showed that the trans conformation of the complexes was significantly more stable than the cis one and that it induced a marked spin delocalization over the rigid organic tether. This "spin leakage" was most pronounced for the shortest biradical C1.

Remarkable Enhancement of Catalytic Activity of Cu-Complexes in the Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction by Using Triply Fused Porphyrin

A bimetallic triply fused copper(II) porphyrin complex (1) was prepared, comprising two monomeric porphyrin units linked through β-β, meso-meso, β'-β' triple covalent linkages and exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction in comparison to the analogous monomeric copper(II) porphyrin complex (2). Electrochemical investigations in the presence of a proton source (trifluoroacetic acid) confirmed that the catalytic activity of the fused metalloporphyrin occurred at a significantly lower overpotential (≈320 mV) compared to the non-fused monomer. Controlled potential electrolysis combined with kinetic analysis of catalysts 1 and 2 confirmed production of hydrogen, with 96 and 71 % faradaic efficiencies and turnover numbers of 102 and 18, respectively, with an observed rate constant of around 10⁷  s^-1 for the dicopper complex. The results thus firmly establish triply fused porphyrin ligands as outstanding candidates for generating highly stable and efficient molecular electrocatalysts in combination with earth-abundant 3d transition metals.

Isomerization Reactions in Anionic Mesoionic Carbene-Borates and Control of Properties and Reactivities in the Resulting CoII Complexes through Agostic Interactions

We present herein anionic borate-based bi-mesoionic carbene compounds of the 1,2,3-triazol-4-ylidene type that undergo C-N isomerization reactions. The isomerized compounds are excellent ligands for CoII  centers. Strong agostic interactions with the "C-H"-groups of the cyclohexyl substituents result in an unusual low-spin square planar CoII  complex, which is unreactive towards external substrates. Such agostic interactions are absent in the complex with phenyl substituents on the borate backbone. This complex displays a high-spin tetrahedral CoII  center, which is reactive towards external substrates including dioxygen. To the best of our knowledge, this is also the first investigation of agostic interactions through single-crystal EPR spectroscopy. We conclusively show here that the structure and properties of these CoII complexes can be strongly influenced through interactions in the secondary coordination sphere. Additionally, we unravel a unique ligand rearrangement for these classes of anionic mesoionic carbene-based ligands.

Effective Anisotropic Interactions in Spin Pairs Containing High-Spin Ions with Large Zero-Field Splitting

Analytic and numeric derivations are made of the effective exchange and dipolar magnetic interactions between spin pairs containing S = 3/2 ions, such as high-spin Co(II), S = 5/2 ions, such as high-spin Fe(III) ions, experiencing zero-field splittings much larger than the interion interactions, or J = 15/2 ions such as Dy(III) with crystal-field splittings much larger than the interion interaction. These formulas allow for a simpler analysis of the magnetic properties of dimers containing high-spin ions.

Magnetostructural Characterization of Oxalamide Dihalo-Bridged Copper Dimers: Intra- and Interdimer Interactions Studied by Single-Crystal Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy

Detailed single-crystal electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of oxalamide complexes with halogen-bridged copper dimers, supported by X-ray, magnetic susceptibility, and powder ESR studies, is reported. Four complexes with two different ligands are synthesized: [CuL^A (μ-X)]₂ and [CuL^V (μ-X)]₂ , for which L^A =N-(l-alanine methyl ester)-N'-[(2-pyridine-2-yl)methyl]oxalamide and L^V =N-(l-valine methyl ester)-N'-[(2-pyridine-2-yl)methyl]oxalamide, for which X=Cl or Br. X-ray analysis shows that the geometry at each copper(II) ion is square pyramidal, whereas two pyramids share one base-to-apex edge with parallel basal planes. The complexes are linked by hydrogen bonds into infinite chains and are further linked into a 3D network. Susceptibility measurements show that the copper centers in the dimers are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled (|J|≈1-2 cm^-1 ). From powder ESR spectroscopy, the g values and dx2-y2 orbital as the ground state of the unpaired electron are determined. The complexes show unusual anisotropic splitting and merging of the ESR lines if their single crystals rotate in a magnetic field. The observation of this partially resolved intradimer dipolar splitting enables estimation of the weak interdimer exchange interaction parameter |J'|≈0.001 cm^-1 .
